Japan and Smoking

(Japan(228)
Tue 2008/11/18 14:20
What Japan Thinks has a survey of Japanese smoking habits.

Q1: Do you smoke? (Sample size=14,473) Currently smoke 23.6% Used to smoke (to end of survey) 23.2% Never smoked (to end of survey) 53.1% Q2: About how many cigarettes do you smoke per day? (Sample size=current smokers) One or less 2.3% Two to five 6.9% Six to ten 16.4% Eleven to fifteen 16.6% Sixteen to twenty 32.9% Twenty-one to thirty 16.6% Thirty-one or more 8.1% No answer 0.2%
The 23.6% who said that they smoke seems very low though as I still get the impression that most of the population smokes. Had one single puff in my life during my teens to see what it was like. Personally find the smell and smoke unbearable (have asthma) but have a load of friends who smoke. Image from Gelbooru.

I'm pre-mature (my mom smoked cigs and all that) so my lungs are kinda messed up. Besides, I wouldn't smoke anyways, and I can't stand it when my grandma smokes (she whines about my mom messing up her life, yet my grandma smokes, so she's doing the same thing.) and she won't open the door. I basically hate her for that very reason.

That's usually drinking. They tend to beat the crap out of you if you steal smokes but they encourage drinking.

Yeah that is part of the problem. IHMO, I think the worst is that (some) Manga/Anime promote smoking to young children by making cool characters smoking (like Sanji). Smoking in Japan has a good reputation event though it is unhealthy ! But you can be cool without a cigarette, and certainly not favorise the idea "you have to be kakoi like Sanji, hence you have to smoke".
Lucky Luke, a belgium comic character, used to smoke (he is a cow boy). But several years ago, it creator switch the cigarette for a straw in his mouth, and I dont think it has changed his look at all.

On the other hand, I advise the movie "Thank you for Smoking", very witty.

One thing I liked about Japan was the price of tobacco. IIRC it was about 230 yen for premium brands when I was last there. I miss those prices ;(

Certainly see a ton more smokers in Japan than I have anywhere in the US or Spain.

Well it depends who the smoker is. Modern smokers really should know better because today we are aware of the damage smoking can do to us and the serious consequences it can cause. The harm of smoking is known and discussed widely and you can't get away from the facts today.

However my mum and many people her age and older began smoking a long long time ago. When they first began smoking the health effects weren't well known or discussed at all so people smoking really were none the wiser.

Once you are addicted to nicotine, stopping smoking can be very hard because it is an aggressive addiction and takes a lot of willpower and determination to stop. It's just as bad as weaning a drug addict or an alcoholic off drugs and booze for a lot of people.

It's an addiction, and for the most part a social activity and stress reliever.

I've got friends and co-workers who smoke. They know it's bad, I've talked to them. I'm not one to lecture though because of all the information out there they know it's bad for the health. One of the reasons across the board that I've heard why they continue is that it relieves stress, and nicotine does in fact induce the release of "good-feeling" hormones into the body.

When I'm majorly stressed out I get an urge, mostly out of curiosity, to ask for a cig, light up, and just mellow out. Though my conscious and highly responsible side kicks me in the asterisk screaming "Don't you even dare" and I just grab a bite to eat or fall asleep instead. I can barely stand the scent of smoke let alone inhale it so when they light up I usually have to stand at a distance or against the wind.

As well, some individuals are also more prone to becoming addicted than others so it's easier for them to get hooked after one puff.

Funny bit about otakus: Most of them don't smoke.
It's a good side. Here in Brazil, I don't see many anime fans smoking too.
Even though I'm currently living in the brazilian city with the highest percentage of smokers.

But unfortunately, I can't say the same for myself.

I do understand people who hate it, who can't understand why, who because they don't smoke, thinks people who smoke is stupid or something.

But to put it bluntly, it's an addiction.
It usually comes to you at a time in your life when you couldn't care less about it being unhealthy.

I also have to say that, to most people, smoking few cigs won't make them addicted.

It's similar to alcohol... you only start liking it after having some drinks.

I also don't think it's cool smoking... I don't smoke too often.

There are periods in a year I smoke more or less, it's usually related to stress, and the most I do is 1 cancer stick a day.

I do it alone, at home, and in late hours.

And I never told anyone to "try it" or anything like that.
But I do smoke, and I can't give reasons. Just the same as I can't really explain why I spent so much money on otaku stuff today when I knew I shouldn't. :P

not as addivtive but it is more dangerous if you think it, yeah if you smoke you will shorten your life but you can kill more and quicker if you are under influence of alcohol, so i think that like alcohol smoking should not be illigal, it is the election of every person, if you dont make harm to others ( like smoking in certain designated places ) it's ok if you want to.

I agree...not as addictive, but I don't know about the "lethal" part.
Also, I think it goes like this: Alcohol is not as addictive in the sense that many people drinks and don't get completely hooked by it.

But for those who get addicted by alcohol, it can be far more destructive both for the addicted and for those around him/her.

And I know... I have both cases of addiction in my family.
Also had a friend who commited suicide because of his alcohol addiction... very sad case.

It all goes down to culture and social acceptance. Because in the end, they are all drugs.

It's not the percentage that smoke, but how much they smoke that surprises me. :

As for me, I'll never smoke. Besides the obvious (smell, unhealthy, costs) I simply can't do it. I have a very sensitive nose/respiratory system, and I start having trouble breathing just by standing close to someone smoking for a short period of time.

yea~ my sinus acts up really bad. then i end up with a runny nose for days

whats also really surprising is that they are allowed to smoke indoors! so if you are trying to enjoy like a gamecenter, you just have to take it, which i couldnt stand. but i think they are making laws that prohibit indoor smoking... at a very slow pace.

been on and off since i was 17 but has never progressed to the pack-a-day habit that most smokers have. most i could handle was up to 10 sticks a day.
i also don't encourage anyone to start on it and have had a sit-down with my siblings about how bad it is. right now i am actually in the OFF phase (hopefully for good).
Also i don't view it as cool, I view it as my own personal affliction and weakness. i think the only reason i ever go back to smoking is because I've had a lot of great memories and conversations while indulging in it.

Cigarettes are absolutely disgusting. I don't even have to try them to know--just walking by a smoker makes me queasy.

Heh, looking at the stats here, looks like a lot of people agree with me.

As for my comment, I do not smoke.
I truly very agree with loli mania said, that it was waste of money and lifespan will be shorten.
If lifespan is shortened, we will never get to see the good-looking future ahead of us. And also the community, like this, will be just a memory that has embedded early. It's nice to see what would this community be in the future.

I thought the figure for cigs per day would be lower but with more smokers. I know a LOT of people in Japan who only smoke 3-5 a day, including my uncle. Maybe people who only smoke a couple a day don't consider themselves to be "smokers"... "Social smoking" is also a big thing.
Stateside, I know fewer people who smoke but those who do tend to smoke heavily...

Although I have a friend that smokes and I really don't have a problem with it. If a person want to smoke then that's their choice, it's not like we don't know the consequences for doing so anymore, they should so whatever makes them happy.

This might be allergy to the conservatives in the bottles. Breweries tend to add preservatives to bottles to kill bacterias and fungus but since alcohol in itself is a preservative then it shouldn't be needed. They do it anyway because then they can save money on cleaning (gross but true). For all we know the same is the case for Starbucks.

Germany banned preservatives in beer centuries ago since they banned everything that shouldn't be in beer since they had problems with watered down beer containing all sorts of weird stuff to hide that fact. The law was never removed and this means that people with allergies against beer can drink German beer only. If you really want to drink beer then you could look into this. However personally I think people would be better off not drinking. I have seen too many people ending up really bad due to alcohol because they thought they could control it but they couldn't. The worst part is that recent research tend to show that it's like the brain can deal with being drunk and getting sober only a limited amount of times and once it's used up it will become hyperactive and that's really bad.

That means that the Australian campains actually works. The media here (controlled by smokers btw) stated that it isn't working because it appears to be based on fiction and that it's not likely that smoke causes cancer in the mouth and so on. They did it in a way so that they didn't give it as official facts though so they can't get problems for spreading false information. I'm sick of medias spreading their own message instead of doing what they are supposed to do: give us the news.

I don't smoke, never did and will never do it. Whenever I end up being in a place where people smoke I get a headache and the following day I have infections in the air flow (I don't know the English word for the stuff the air passes though between the nose and the throat). I used to have quite a lot of sickdays before I realised this connection.

A result of this is that I can't be anywhere where people smoke. This has resulted in loss of contact with people (smokers and friends of smokers tend to see smoking bans as a result of control freaks) and that I can't go to places like bars. Imagine that: going to a bar and get sick even without drinking. Luckily uni banned smoking everywhere in all buildings not long ago and all public transportation banned it like 5-10 years ago.

I really wonder what's so special about tobacco smoke since I don't get infections of other kinds of smoke (gas/diesel exhaust/burning wood/coal/oil/whatever).

It turned out that putting warning text on cigarettes resulted in more smokers. I don't think I heard an official reason why this happens but I personally think it's because smokers (at least in the west) are people who wants to behave incorrectly. I mean part of the reason why the railroads here banned smoking was because the smoking departments were more dirty than the non-smoking departments. I don't mean just by the smoke, but also shoes on the seats, newspapers lying everywhere and so on.

I'm not sure if information and reasoning will work on smokers >.<

Ok, I will change it to "a majority of smokers". I didn't really mean every single smoker even though it came out that way.

You didn't say which one "such a statement" is so I will take a guess and explain it. I presume you mean "I'm not sure if information and reasoning will work on smokers" and what I meant by it is that we have for so long heard how dangerous it is to smoke and since a whole lot of people still smoke and some people still start smoking, then information and reasoning isn't working. Remember this is a reply to anti-smoking camplain.

While you claim to be civil I say you started ranting. Sometimes you will see somebody posting something you disagree with. Instead of being really upset and trying to make people look stupid you should make a constructive reply with reasonable arguments.

yep i smoke but not so much as i used to. i could smoke 2 packs a day but now i mostly stick to 1 pack a week or so. but thats just when i'm out for a drink at home i smoke the good stuff, like Turkish tobacco, or some Cubans. thats the what smoking is! so before you say "blah smoking" i would suggest trying some Turkish apple tobacco with honey. then talk about bad smells and stuff. what i wonder is are any pot-heads on DC? cuz i smoke a lot of green and just want to know if there are any out there ^^;

So you are saying that nobody can comment on stuff unless they tried it themselves? If we take that theory to the extreme then it would be like saying that you aren't allowed to have an opinion about killers unless you tried killing somebody. This is just not how the world works and you should know that by now ;)

yes like you said taking it to the EXTREME. first off i said about cigars and Turkish tobacco, that you do not inhale like cigarettes, you just keep it in your mouth for taste so most people general idea of tobacco is a cigarette that you inhale. what i tried to say is that some people put cigarettes, turkish tobacco and cigars in the same bag and say its the same the same with smokers. and yes there are somethings that you have to try before having a real opinion on the whole matter.

i hate cigarets, cigars, pipes or anything as such!!! >_<

personally, smokers pay for their own death!!!

on top of that, they drag along those who doesn't smoke, because 2nd hand smokers (non-smokers that are close to smokers and inhale their smoke) can also be killed by their cigarets!!!

I dislike cigarettes since childhood and I often had asthma, so I never picked up that habit. When I moved to Kuala Lumpur to pursue my studies this year, that sense of dislike turns into extreme hate, because everyone here seems to smoke more cigarettes than the number of candles on Tutankhamun's birthday cake.

Once, I stayed in a rented house where 7 out of 10 of the occupants frickin' smoke. Worse, they'll turn anything they could find in the house (thrown baked bean cans, bowls, even my #$%@in' coffee mug!) into frickin' ashtrays! Glad I moved out on October and now renting out at a nicer place where none of the occupants smoke.

I smoke. It's not something i'm proud of and i hardly think it makes me look cool. BUT!! I am a little shocked by some comments on here. For example: "Anyone who smokes is stupid" REALLY Because i think someone who is so narrow minded that they pass judgement on someones intellectual ability based on a habit they have developed to be pretty stupid myself.

It is a choice one makes like snorting a line of cocaine, shooting up heroine, eating too much junk food, or spending 200$ a month on figures. Everyone is welcome to their own opinions, but i bet you if Danny said he smoked you wouldn't all lay on all these god awful comments. You think i enjoy the fact that i have a bad habit? Unless you have been addicted to something in your life, you really have no room to condone my actions and lifestlye.

"i hate smokers" "smokers are disgusting" Do you folks believe your own lies? Lets agree on this: Smokers like normal people contain all ranges and facets of society. And don't give me that second hand smoke crap. We can't smoke in any public places in my state so unless you are coming over to my house stop your whining!

It is only natural for someone to get defensive about something they do. What if the article was about addictions to buying figures or spending too much health care time with imaginary cartoon characters? Would you all be condoning the lifestyles of those folks. HMM based on some of the figure collections i've seen i'd say those could be called addictions as well.

I think at least most of those comments were aimed at smoking and not at smokers as whole people. Look at this example (which really happened). I met a girl/woman at a station and I haven't seen her since we went to school together so naturally we started talking. All of a sudden she started smoking so I had to leave her (my health really can't stand cigarette smoke). I hate the fact that she did that but I don't hate her as a person. I hope this makes it clear what I mean.

I think you become very defensive and defend smokers who expose other people (non smokers) to 2nd hand smoking. If nobody were exposed to 2nd hand smoking then I would presume that non-smokers wouldn't be so upset with smokers.

agreed it would be polite to ask. The fact remains that smokers tend to ignore asking specially if they are outdoors. While it's unknown how many of the smokers who acts like this, the fact remains that it's that group of smokers who the non-smokers will notice.

I still remember my very first smoke is a coffee-favor cigar when I was 14, then try on a vary range of brand then rested on Lucky Strike & B&H cigarette as an occasional smoker.

When 18 I picked up minor smoking habit on mini cigar & big roll cigar only, mostly when I'm outdoor. Until a year down the road, I fallen sick & cough very badly for few weeks, so I went to a doctor & had an X-ray, it shown my lung had a zillion of tiny white spots all across my lung, it freaked me out as I thought it's cancer cells.

So I told my doctor I'd only been smoking cigars all these while, why the damage is still so heavy? The doc said it's all the same, it's still nicotine regardlessly, then I shouted it's not fair, I'm paying 10X times more expensive for a cigar than cigarette!

After I'd gotten better from that time, I never smoke any nicotine again........... Lesson learned.

The amount of smoking...especially in restaurants was the most dispieasing thing I found about being in Japan. I was shocked to see so many people smoking. There is no way that that 26% is correct.

Smoke temporally paralyzes the tasting sense so being exposed to smoke while eating will make the food taste less powerful. Based on this resturants should have an interest in banning smoking if they serve good food. It could be used to hide bad food though.

As for the 26%. Since most people smoke at resturants then maybe the other 74% stays away from those places. We can see that happening in Europe and see that more people show up in pubs after they were forced to ban smoking by law. They complained about how many customers they would lose if they banned smoking but it turned out that even more people stayed away because they stayed away from 2nd hand smoking.

actually no. i live in a European country that just HAPPENS to have the no-smoking law. the only ones that survived are the ones who had the option and money to build a smoking room, or have the luxury to put in front of the bar some tables and ashtrays. and no they are not full not by the slightest! i'm at the pub everyday and i will tell you that the ones who don't have all the things i mentioned before are pretty much EMPTY! maybe a bit more full on the weekend but not as full as it was before the no-smoking law was placed. plus a lot of restaurants if not ALL have the non smoking part that is cut off from the smoker part.

I've never smoked and (probably) never will. I used to begrudge people who did. I sincerely regret that now.

I was on holiday last year when the ban on smoking in enclosed public places came into effect. A normally vibrant - if quiet - little place on the Lincolnshire coast literally died on July 1. Pubs and arcades deserted because people can't smoke in them, or have to smoke outside in the wettest summer in my memory, really does suck the joy out of proceedings. I hope the place has weathered the storm - I haven't been this year, and we were friends with a lot of the folks there.

well the thing with the cancer sometimes it's a little exaggerated they tell everyone that if you smoke you will have lung cancer but there is plenty of people ( old people) who still smoke and they dont even have a lung desease, and here some people are saying things like " if you smoke you are making suicide " saying that only smoking will give you cancer is like saying that if you drink like every saturday you will have cirrhosis, or all the people in big cities like the capital of this country if it was so easy to have lung cancer like half the population of big cities would have it.

im not saying that smoking is not harmful im only saying that it's not that harful like some people say.

It is a bit blown out of proportions yet rightfully so. While there are exceptions to the case, majority of smokers who don't stop end up developing cancer or respiratory problems and dying. Some individuals have the genetics to withstand an unhealthy life style. There's a case study of this Australian whose in his late 60s I believe who chain smokes and drinks beer like water, yet his body keeps itself in fairly peak shape...too such a point where he competed and won several marathons. Researchers are marveled at his body's tolerance to such toxins.

It's partly shock value to deter people from starting or continuing to smoke. Yet, the effects on the body is undeniable. A person who doesn't smoke shouldn't start because chances are that you will develop severe health complications in the future.

The only 100% guarantee that comes with lighting up a cigarette is that your health insurance will shoot up like no other, if they find out.

I can see your side of the argument; after all, my dad says the same thing to me.

But what's the percentage of regular smokers NOT getting cancer? It might not be 0%, but... what I'm trying to say is, how can one know if they're "lucky" enough to be one of those smokers who puff and puff and just stay healthy all the way? Certainly a very small minority.

Besides, you tend to worry when there're two cancer casualties in the family tree. I swear, cancer and the cockroach must have had some common ancestry link; they just keep coming and coming.

It's not helping that the average Singaporean's mentality is "Never going to happen to me". The government goes as far as to hire actresses to act as convinvingly as possible in the role of a victim of smoking, they place pictures of diseases on the boxes along with warning notes, they try to make it look as disgusting as possible, and they go and place heavy taxes on the imported sticks, but at the end of the day, it's the same taxes they're feeding into the country fund, and deep down, they all know that it's a very easy way to get money.

I don't really mind who smokes or not as long as they don't exhale into my face since the world is a place of free will, but it's the goverment's pansy approach to the entire thing that... befuddles me. :-?

You bring up another interesting issue. Smokers get more breaks. Not long ago all those breaks were paid but recently private companies started to have a clock where the smokers (and whoever else takes a break) needs to check out to take the break and check in again when they return.

I downright HATE cigarrettes, they are disgusting, have absolutely no flavour and do no good for your body.

Now, while some may not agree - i got no problem with rolling tobacco and have a few puffs from my friends freshly-rolled cigarrettes sometimes - completely different taste (especially if it's some of that scented or flavoured tobacco) and because the filters are almost 100% cotton or something the likes of cotton, it's not as harmful (no tar, which is what screws up your lungs).

What do you guys say?

You know quitting is just a matter of willpower. My grandfather smoked for years and then he realised that it's bad for the health so he decided to stop and he just stopped. Whenever he got the urge to smoke he took a coin or ring or something and started to turn it in his hand because that took away the attention for smoking. After a few days he stopped doing that and it was all over and he never felt like smoking again.

So that's it. Set your mind to quitting and just do it. There is no trying because trying isn't the same as you have made up your mind.

He most likely omitted actual time for the sake of getting the point across that his grandfather in fact stopped, and that you can hold an addiction if you have a strong authentic desire to do so and go out and actually do it. It won't be easy, true, yet that's where willpower counts for the most.

My own grandfather who smoked for years ended up quitting several months after I was born. It took him several months in total to kick the habit, not an overnight quickie, but he did it. It was out of the pleas from my mom, her sisters, and his wife that he should quit since second-hand smoke is detrimental to an infant's health and that he himself would end up dying early. For the sake of your own first grandchild...that's a pretty strong motivator.

He turned to chocolate as am acting "buffer" whenever he got the cravings. Never lit up since then. I never would have guessed he ever smoked but I did wonder why he loved eating chocolate so much.

Basically, the "Almost never gets you anywhere". You do it or You don't. It sounds cookie cutter and ugly, but reality speaking...it's true.

I should have proofread that post.

As far as I know I didn't omit any time. However this happened before I was born so I don't know for sure if it was days or weeks afterwards. I do know that it started when the doctor told him about health issues regarding smoking and he stated at the doctor that he would stop right away and he did. He didn't spend any time preparing for it at all.

I didn't say that his urges to smoke went away overnight. I said that his will to follow those urges went away overnight. There is a difference ;)

It's funny that Jedi powers should be mentioned. I came to think of Master Yoda when I wrote the last line. He said (looked it up right now) "No. Try not. Do, or do not. There is no try". The last time I went though Star Wars I realised that there actually is quite a lot of sense in what Yoda says but that's another story.

I would rather spend my money on figures, that's all. Fumes from paint are probably just as bad as smoke so I don't really care about the health issue.

Wow. Well it seems that most people {a} hate cigarettes, {b} hate smokers, {c} think smoking/smokers are stupid, {d} think smokers are ugly, etc. Hmmm. Well, I smoke. I especially like Mild Seven Lights-- the best cigarettes come from Japan. I think that as far as smoking habits go, Japan has some of the most considerate and conscientious smokers in the world-- there are even designated smoking areas all over the place-- even in Narita Airport; it's wonderful. Japan is also the only place I've seen where personal/portable ashtrays are widely available. I use one.

I smoke about 4 or 5 a day I guess, sometimes more on weekends/vacation. One of the reasons I love Japan is that smokers still have the option of enjoying a smoke after meals inside the restaurant. It's so nice and relaxing-- a great way to end a meal (for my wife and I, anyway).

In many areas of Tokyo, smoking while walking around on the street is now illegal; in Shinjuku there are anti-smoking police that will force you to put your cigarette out. That's fine-- there are plenty of designated smoking areas all over the place. Smoking has recently been banned on all Shinkansen trains, too, which kinda sucks.

I also drink alcohol from time to time and I think that cigarettes and alcohol go together very nicely. Not smoking in an Izakaya? That's silly to me. Non-smoking sections are a great idea for those that do not wish to smoke.

Well anyway-- It's my personal choice whether to do it, and I enjoy it. My wife and I will be quitting soon so that we can have healthy children, however, we like smoking. Most people seem to think I'm a pretty nice guy and consider me to be relatively smart (so they say anyway). I certainly do not think my wife is stupid or ugly (or smelly-- she brushes her teeth after almost every cigarette). It seems that smokers are *GREATLY* outnumbered in this discussion so I decided to present our side.

Oh-- i forgot to add one thing. I have two friends who are bar-workers; one of them is a manager. The ban on smoking here in Chicago actually lowered bars' income! Customers usually like smoking so they are less likely to go into bars where they will have to go outside into the cold every time they want to smoke.

I never got hooked on cigarettes even though I used to smoke a lot when I was younger. Never really tried to stop either, I just sort of forgot about them. I still buy a pack of cigarettes on time to time though (once a year maybe) as I really like smoking and the smell of tobacco, but they are a bit expensive and I do like other unhealthy pleasures more (like chocolate).

An astonishing 84% "No"!
I'm guessing smoking is a very social habit, exclusive to the kind of "social group" one belongs to. I RARELY see a smoker at an anime convention or any otaku related social gathering for that matter.

used to but not for long, about a month or so, then I quit for good.

I've been wondering about those smokers, defending, claiming their rights or stuff. Okay, it's their rights I admit but don't they care about those poeple around them which they care so much? Their wife, husband, kids, daughters, friends, father, mother?

My friend got her lung cancer because of her father, she died recently, her father then quit for good. May her rest in peace.

I dislike cigarettes to the point that, when the day comes where I earn shitloads of money, I'll buy over every single cigarette company and factory, and then disband them all at once while sending all the tobacco (maybe drugs can join in if there's space) in the world on a rocket into the sun. Good riddance. I want my clean air back. =)

I don't think the problem is getting the money. Even if we managed to get the money then another problem would appear: what would stop some greedy person from starting a new factory?
The solution is to go into politics and make a ban on all tobacco. This solution will also use less money.

While we are at it, shouldn't we also ban smelly farts, bad breath, public transportation with no free seats, queues in shops and exhaust fumes?

why not ban every hentai that is not normal? or figures that make a bad image of a woman? or ban every kind of movie that has a character who kills other?

The key here is liberty, what you are saying is something that the nazi regime intented to do ( yeah they wanted to ban smoking all over germany ).
apart ban tobacco do you know the consequenses? imagine that a family lives because the father works at the factory, imagine that the factory closes because the ban what will happend to the family? every action have consequenses and sometimes what you think that will make a better world only makes it worse.

Somehow I think you missed that I was being sarcastic. However now that you mention the consequenses I guess they look better than the consequenses for not banning smoking. I mean look at how many people who suffers from smoke. Shouldn't you (as a future doctor) work for trying to stop causes of people dying from cancer?

This brings up an interesting question. Shouldn't you (still as a future doctor) fight for banning smoking instead of attacking every single statement that makes smoking look bad? I don't think you have to worry about lack of patients. There will always be dying people who will pay a fortune for being saved.

if what you say was totally right then i should be trying to ban tv's and computers because the screen makes your sight worse or soda because the kidney rocks or even candy because it makes people fat, i know that it's a touchy subject and that i will sound like every smoker but, freedom is freedom i have the right to smoke and you to not smoke and that has to be respected.

The difference between smoking and those things you mention is that the things you mention can do stuff to the "user" only while smoking will affect other people as well. I have yet to encounter candy that can make people fat by looking at other people eating it.

I just thought of two scenarios regarding this topic.
Scenario 1:
Person A assaults person B, strips him naked and throws him into a pile of snow. B ends up getting ill and have to stay at home for a week recovering.

Scenario 2:
Person A smokes heavily and B can't avoid being exposed to 2nd hand smoking. B's health can't stand smoke and he ends up getting ill and have to stay at home for a week to recover. (I personally tried this one several times with me playing the role of B >.<)

Conclusion:
In the first scenario A could be charged for assault and sued for lost payment for a week. In the other scenario then B has to deal with the financial loss himself because A was only using his liberal rights to smoke. We can't agree on anything here because the smokers yell liberty and non-smokers takes the viewpoint of B. Surely there is strong viewpoints and not so strong ones, but it's more or less how it is. I don't think scenario 1 would be a touchy subject as I presume most if not all would claim A to be a bad guy who shouldn't be allowed to act like that.

if you dont want to be the person b in the scenario 2 you just need to move from that place or go to a place where nobody is smoking , you cant compare assaulting someone strip him naked and throw him to a pile of snow with smoking and that the person b gets sick because hi didnt move or even asked to the smoker to move or stop,if you were polite many people would help you with that.

It's very clear that you have never tried to ask people to quit smoking. I have never encountered anybody who just said "ok" and thrown out the cigarette when asked. I know of people being given the cold shoulder when requesting that people didn't smoke. This actually resulted in both jobs that became so horrible to stay in that they have to quit and a case of a lost education (it would appear that requesting a no-smoking written exam room was a bad move).

Moving away from smokers can be impossible (like a mandatory meeting) and it would also be the same as giving smokers the right to kick non-smokers away.

It looks like you have some fine ideas on this, but I'm telling you that it's just not how it works in the real world.

So if a ban is out of the question, then how will you solve this issue? It's clear that asking people to avoid exposing 2nd hand smoking isn't working. Also it would kind of weird to have a system where you constantly have to ask people not to hurt your health. It would be like having a system where you are allowed to kick people until they politely ask you to stop.

Let's take another example from real life. At the station there is a shed so passengers can take cover from the rain while waiting. You can only enter it if you can deal with the smoke. If your health can't take it then you are forced to stay in the rain. To be honest I have never tried to enter and ask everybody to stop smoking because I fear I will be assaulted. The railroad added non-smoking signs in the shed, but those signs are ignored.

This is the kind of situation when not everyone will be happy with the results and thinking that the people would understand each others is utopic.

But what is the problem really? that smoking is so bad or that you can't tolerate it? i know plenty of people who dont care about smoking and can even tolerate it so, your problem is that you can't be exposed to it because you get sick, so tell me who is the person with the problem?

If somebody sets up a diesel powered machine and the neighbour gets sick, then the guy with the machine is responsible. If the same scenario happens if the guy with the machine uses cigarettes instead, then you claim that it's the problem of neighbour. Your logic is flawed.

Besides I think it's weird that it's even a question if people should accept being exposed to 2nd hand smoking or not. It's proven that even if people don't get ill right away then they risk being killed from it anyway. You are saying that people should tell smokers something like "I don't want you to expose me to hazardous fumes (smoke) that can kill me. Please put them away". All other deadly fumes are banned or needs to be ventilated away from people if we for some reason can't avoid them (like cars. You can't use those indoor without ventilation).

Claiming that I'm the one with the problem would be the same as claiming that say it's the people of China who is the problem and not the polution that causes them to become ill. A whole lot of people becomes ill of smoke, some (like me, I know that I'm not the only one) will be ill within the first 48 hours, some takes years, but they will get ill.

You could be right that we can never settle for an agreement where everybody will be happy, but selecting the option where some people get ill/dies due to other people's enjoyment isn't the right solution. I consider it not only selfish, but also cruel and downright mean. It's really rare that I use so strong words regarding other people, but I think the cruelty that I'm exposed to here calls for it.

I don't think I will say anymore to you regarding this. Your carelessness for other people's heath (particular mine) will most likely result in something nasty and I don't want that. DC shouldn't be a place where you go "oh no, not that guy again".
