The latest Xacti video camera by Sanyo - the CA65.

I owned the first Xacti back in 2004 (my ancient review here) and then the Xacti C5 in 2005 (review here). After using the C5 for a while, I realized how crap it was. They made it smaller than the original C1 but the lens got smaller too meaning absolute crap quality in low light conditions. Even by day, the quality was grainy.

I was fed up of the Xacti series and was going to go for the Panasonic SD3 at 104,980 yen but after looking at many video samples for this xacti CA65, I decided to go for it. Cost me about 41,000 yen on Rakuten.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Xacti is about the only flash memory based video camera that saves in a format compatible with Macs (MPEG-4 AVC/H.264) The myth of "Macs being good at video editing" - dont know where that came from considering that you have to convert most movie formats before being able to edit on a Mac.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The usual crap that comes in the box. A video cable that I will never use (never used it with the previous Xacti's) and a manual that I never read because it contains too much info (like a whole page with diagrams on how to insert a battery.)
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The speaker for listening to playback on.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Konomi-chan is todays model.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The CA65 is waterproof down to 1.5 meters - you can see it in action in this clip. I chose this model over the CG65 because I can take it to the beach (Okinawa to be precise ^^)and not worry about the sand or water damaging it.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
A bit bigger than I thought it would be but can live with that for the convenience of not having to convert it on the Mac.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The strip of metal holds the stereo microphone.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Comes with a 6Megapixel camera.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The lens has gone back to being the same size-ish as the first 2004 model. The bigger the lens, the more light gets let in and the better quality the final clip will be.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Power button. The Xacti will also sleep when the viewer is closed.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
No cover included with the CA65 this time which is fine as I never used the cover on the previous two models.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The screen is gorgeous - bright and huge at 5cm x 4cm.
Konomi's bottom is also bright n huge ^^;
Records about 40mins of VGA quality video on a 1GB SD card.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Viewer flips over 180.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The big round rocker button with the smaller button in the center is a bit awkward to use. The button placements on the previous models were much easier to press.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Uploaded a raw sample here - 3.36MB file at the highest quality the Xacti can handle. The sample was taken on the day of the Dance vader shooting.
Quality is not amazing but not bad given the convenience of the unit size and file format. I just wanted something which will let me get upload something to the web in the shortest possible time. The Dance Trooper clip was taken on the Xacti too but was terribly compressed by YouTube.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
Battery compartment is protected by a rubber sheet underneath the cover to prevent water getting in. The battery is the same since the C1 (thank you Sanyo) and the USB connection is located here too. I can mount the Xacti as an external drive on the Mac.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
The most uncoolest case I have seen.
The battery charger however is most cool.
Xacti CA65 (click to enlarge)
And this is the reason why the charger is cool - that bundle of shite on the left is the charger for the C1!
Folks outside Japan can look for this on Jlist (or ask them to get it for you)

Interesting gadget. Just wondering how much do you spend on electronic gadgets, figures and gundams and in other stuff, you must have one hell of an income to be able to acquire all those goodies. I keep playing on the € millions (european lottery) hoping to make the jackpot and get out of here and get all the goodies I want and live well till the rest of my life.

I just bought a Canon TX1, it's also a flash memory based 7.1 mega pixel camera/camcorder hybrid. It record movie in 720p, but using the motion JPG compression instead of mpeg4, resulting in much larger video format.

I figured it was iMovie. You might want to look into Final Cut Pro or Adobe Premier. You shouldn't have any trouble with file with those programs. Double-check just to be sure, but I'm fairly positive they'd suit you more than iMovie if you decide to really get into movie editing. I never liked iMovie that much, personally. It's very limiting.

What I like about the Xacti CA65 is that it's designed like a gun's handle, making it easy to carry ^^;

I though the casing was rather cool ^^;

Nice camera! I've got so much to buy this year, maybe I'll ask the camera for Christmas. The video is really clear for something that size...nice teaser for the trooper and darth.

I am very interested by this Xacti, but I have a question for you Danny !
The screen looks to be very good, but is it possible to play video that you put on the SD card ? I mean, like divx movie (deathnote episode !). I don't think so, but maybe... It would be cool.

waterproof up to 1.5 meters huh...  cool! sounds like you can take some pretty interesting underwater shots Danny. ^^ although a swimming stormtrooper doesn't sound too armor friendly. ^^;

Video cameras aren't really in my "To Buy list" this year. Maybe in 2008, still got three things to get before the end of the year. A D40, ps3 and an lcd monitor. ^^

I like that the Xacti is waterproof though, that would really make it useful. And that case looks like a gun holster or something. heheh! It could probably pass as a stormtrooper weapon. lolz.

if you used final cut pro you d'ont have to convert your mpeg 4 files. You can have realtime playback but if you put some transitions or effect you need to do some preview render. Real time editing with effect only work with DV DVC PRO HD and HDV codec with final cut pro 5.1

Looks like a pretty good camera for quick shots. The holster bag looks cool indeed ;p
Hehe, people really don't look surprised when walking past a storm trooper and darth vader in harajuku ;p Seemed like one of the side streets, not very crowded as takeshita dori ;p.

I still have a DV camera from Panasonic (an NV-GS400), quite a big sucker, but great picture quality. Recording to pc is no problem, but conversion of DV video is a pain in the ass. many video editing tools like premiere & vegas, don't really work well with xvid or h264...
So you can be happy without all the conversion hassles :)

Yea, the xacti line always seems nice, because you can just throw it in a bag, and have a video camera.
Though are they HD in the new generations? The screens aspect ratio looks a bit wonky, though it could just be the picture. But having a waterproof camera would be really cool, especially last time I went scuba diving, I couldn't take any pictures :<
 (and the link to the video is 404ing for me, dunno if you took it down cause of bandwidth)
