The Switch 2
I have some fantabulous news - my wife has given into my Mac sales talk and accepted the truth - that the Dell that I mistakenly bought for her last year is a sack of steaming monkey shite.
I had it up to my eyeballs with maintaining that heap of shite of a Dell and my wife was fed up with the machines performance - especially that fan - it sounded like it was going to fly through the roof!

Below: Setting up my wife's iBook. First off, the disk needs to be formatted and partitioned - attach it to another Mac and boot up with the "T" key depressed - the machine will boot up in a state known as Target mode. When a machine is in Target mode, the machine acts like a portable hard drive - in this case, the iBook's hard drive is mounted onto the Power Book enabling me to partition the drive using Disk Utility.
The Switch 2
The drive is partitioned so that the system and data can be on separate drives and have been doing this on Windows machines since the dawn of time.
Next is a *clean* installation of OSX leaving out Garage Band (over 2 gigs) and printer drivers (over 1GB!) and some other crap.

Below: An expensive "feel-good" doormat - Dell P4 2.55GHZ, 80GB, 512MB at 200,000 bloody yen (about 2000 USD). It "feels-good" when I come home to tread on the screen - the LCD makes lovely patterns depending on how you tread on it and the keyboard is useful for removing mud.

Awesome!!

At home I uses a Fujitsu T70H which I bought around a year ago. At work I use a PowerBook G4 12" and the funny thing is that the product line we are working on is Win32 based! But I convinced them to get me a PowerBook ;) I really wanna get myself a Mac to use at home (My gf already uses the iMAC 20" for a year now) still dont know whether I should get a MacMini, iMAC 20" or a PowerBook .. or just to wait to the Intel CPUs.

BTW, whats your opinion on the Intel switch? It would be shame to see that now everybody would be able to run the OSX .. here comes piracy! :(

Seems that more and more people are starting to love the Mac. Recently my girlfriends win based computer just decided to give up. Not sure if it's the RAM, CPU, motherboard or what. It wasn't woth it anymore to troubleshoot this computer and try to find the old parts for it. So I started to talk my girlfriend into getting a Mac. Myself I haven't used one in my life, but from the things I have heard from others I tried to convince her to get one. So she eventually decided to get a 15" Powerbook. Now she says that she'll never go back to windows again. She fell in love with this little toy. Right now I'm just waiting for the macs to come out on an intel cpu so I can dual boot when I need to code in .NET. Can't wait to get one myself...

I have a question, why are some of the keys on the PowerBook blacked out? Is it for some special character encoding?

Hi Jerome,
These are Hangul (Korean) keyboard stickers - my blind Hangul typing is not that good :-(
For those who are interested - you can get these stickers in Kyobo Book in Seoul for about 3 USD a set. Or if you are feeling rich, you can buy from a Japanese retailer at 40 USD!

So you finally get your Mighty mouse ;) Is yours working better on your Mac than on my DUAL CORE PC ?

Hey Gonzague,
My DUAL CORE Mightly Mouse also acts as a self defence nunchaku and sargophagus (is that the correct spelling?) cleansing device.

Ah, your new arrival is identical to my little baby iBook! I guess there is common ground for former users of Windows and Unix. We've all gone and switched to Mac.

Keep the faith.

KCA,
When you make a clean install, there is an option (I think "customize") button - click to customize installation.
