LOL, I'd try to avoid eating male fish juice... Anyway, does it have any health benefits? If it does then maybe, just maybe I'll try it...
I'm not sure if I wanna try this.. But then again, if you find it's fine to eat fish roe then shirako should be an o-kay too. But then agian, I'm not so sure. DX
I'll eat anything, animal, mineral, vegetable? This information does not matter to me. What does matter is the texture, Roe was 'different' the first time around, but I love it now. so...why not!
Straight down the throat without savoring the taste. It turns to liquid as soon as it hits your mouth anyway. Chase it down with seaweed (depending where you buy it from). Seriously though, the ONLY bad thing about it is 'thinking' about what it is. It does make a difference which fish juice you try too and its seasonal - makes it all that much special :)
Fish roe maybe, but definitely not that! During the earlier days in Taiwan, my wife's grandma used to tell my wife when she was a little child to eat rooster's similar of Shirako, telling her that it is good for young girls. Not knowing what that is, thinking that it is some meat of the chicken, she ate the whole plate. When she was older and found out what that really is, she totally stop. Do adults used to "trick" you into eating strange stuff when you were younger?
lol.. they serve it cause it can be eaten... if i have a chance, i would like to test it..
Ah... a fine example of how presentation has a big role on how we taste food. Apart from your plain usual sashimi, I'm not too confortable on tasting raw seafood... or anything raw at all. Has something to do with a time when I ate some rotten seafood and spent a week in hell. Funny thing is, though that IS sperm... it's fish sperm. Yet, we tend to relate it to human sperm, and then here comes the GROSS. Anyways, I'm betting it's kinda tasteless. Tastes like water or something. Kinda when I ate shrimp sashimi. No taste at all. But I didn't like it anyways. Kinda funny... I can force myself to eat some weird stuff... but when it's liquid, or slimy... then it gets pretty hard. Like, I could try some ants, scorpions and other crunchy insects. But stuff like larvae or Shirako... that would be hard. There are exceptions though. I tasted nato once. Didn't like it, but wasn't as bad as I thought.
Lol, sorry but my American taste buds will not take me that far, but the funny thing is I still want to try fugu, even though that could cost me my life ^^.
I probably would have tried it if I didn't know what it was, but now I doubt I'd be brave enough, lol. Will you give us your opinion if you ever try it? Or maybe someone else who's actually tried it can comment xD;
When I first looked at that picture, I thought: "hey that looks tasty, kind of like chinese dim sum" Now that you told me about the fish sperm I am not touching that anymore =(
Uuggh.. I might try to taste this simply for the sake of having already tasting it once, but I doubt that I will like it.. Anyway, strange thing that the next thing closest to sperm (the ovum) is not as "weird" to us.. I am talking about fish eggs that's usually eaten with sushi, I think. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roe
Ha, first time I tried it, I had no idea what it was, until my friends told me. I was like, "I just ate sperm... of a fish... SICK!!!" The strange thing was that it didn't taste bad at all, which was sort of weird. Next time I go to Japan, I'll probably get some. =D
Won't mind trying it. It does contain alot of protein right? Danny, Have you tried Rojak (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rojak) before?
We serve it at the restaurant I work at. Shirako agedashi. Lightly fried (tenpura) with ten-tsuyu sprinkled with kizami nori, negi, and shouga. It smells very bad!! My boss told me to try it and told me it was "cod milt"/sperm afterwards. I thought his english translation was wrong....but it wasn't lol. It has a really nice milky texture and doesnt taste so bad, but I'm never eating it again. LOL
Well, thanks for the reminder in advance. Now I am never touching that stuff.
Whoops. Meant to say "warning in advance"
. . . *ugh* When i was in munich in a japanese restaurant i ate something of what i didn't know what it was... it didn't taste bad but... hell... now i suddenly feel sick (4 years later). x.X (It was served as desert... i think... it did taste somewhat sweet and like coconut and looked like little white balls.)
Considering how much of an adventurous eater I am, I definitely will try this if I ever have a chance. I mean, I have eaten scorpions (and got an allergy from it), and other very queer stuff. It's just me, I guess. Impz
Well, what can't kill you will make you stronger ^0^ so why not give it a try. Can't say the same about Fugu though, cause apparently it might kill you...
Well, I eat tobiko (fly fish roe) alot, so I probably would give it a try. If I didn't like it, I'd just take the rest and start a new fetish in the japanese porn industry: Shirako bukkake. Make millions.
well I'm not much of a seafood person. and honestly the idea of eating sacks fulls of fish sperm isn't very appetizing for me
@T.H.A.T Anime Blog ....makes two of us...I like to organize food safaris ( trying out, tasting whatever is edible ) I'll definetly give it a try as soon as possible :)
Not really down with trying that. I'm sure I would eat it, if no one told me what it was.
It didn't look bad at first and looked worthty of trying. But after knowing what it is...no thanks... The only time i didn't know what i was eating was in Thailand. I was taking a bus back to Bangkok from Phatthalung. It was at a stop we made along the way. It was some type of meat in a color of sauce i have never seen before...actually wasn't bad but regret i can't try it again because i don't know what it was...
What does Darth Vader says when Shirako is put on his dinner table? NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! xD
It really looked tasty at first but now that I know what it si - no thanks ^^" Thanks for the warning Danny :D
Somewhat unrelated, but I once ate a baby octopus. The head was actually filled with some yellow liquid. I liked it until I realized what it was. Since then, I have never looked at them the same way.
DO NOT WANT :O Anyway, only had a RONERY Xmas in the morning. Went out with family to a Japanese restaurant for a lunch (ate Ebi Teppenyaki something)
If it tastes a bit like fish eggs (although I don't think so), then I don't see any problem for me to try it out. Though, I must say that I would rather eat it fried than raw. ^^"
thanks but no thanks. ('~')
sorry but ill pass. the thought of eating sperms just freaks me out.
To those wondering what it tastes like, it hardly has any taste with the slight hint of fish. It's almost tasteless. The taste comes from the other stuff it is presented with and various japanese places do all sorts of nice presentation that really makes it look tasty :)
.. ~_~ and i thought it was some nice confectionery..! D:
I don't see how this is different from, say, consuming raw fish eggs with sushi and stuff. I could consider trying it once, though.
I'd rather eat nattou (and I have, trust me...). The sperm sack has a really... "strange", taste...
I have never had shirako...it seems not so common out of Izakaya. However, I just like ikura(Salmon Roe), famous sushi toppings^^
Fish bukkake anyone?
I thought eating bull nuts was weird but..
you know...ive just had dinner & ive come to to read this, makes me want to throw up lol
I won't mind trying.
I think I will pass.
Got uber drunk at Christmas. And no, I don't want to eat that... Stuff.
ewhhhh XD
Uhm...maybe if you'd tell me that it tastes like chicken then I'd probably give it a try :D
maybe if i were asked to eat it...i will do it... just don't tell me what it is...
I generally can't stand food that splatters in your mouth once you've liberated the liquid/semi liquid part from the more solid "shell" (Obviously, both parts are edible... And no, nothing ero here!). When this happens to me, I generally want to puke as a reflex (but restrain myself, hopefully)... So shirako would be a definite no-no and the fact that it's "male fish's love juice"... *Shivers* Not for me, thank you.
HAHA, loving that 'so ronery' picture! LOL! I had a manic Christmas! Had lots of family round and it was ACE! Got chance to see my younger cousins and catch up with uncles n aunts etc. Some people prefer to escape family but I definitely enjoy catching up. I can't say I'd try any Shirako now that I know what it is.. Before reading this post I'd have looked at the picture and been curious to try some.. But after the description I wanna be sick! :-S
it wouldn't hurt if we try it, right? if i don't like the taste then i'll avoid it like the plague XDDD
Fish sperm? a sac full of it? No. A tiny sprinkle of it over my udon? No. Knowingly dining in the same room as someone who's eating it? Not a chance. That's pretty serious coming from a guy who's snacked on goat's head. In fact this is now the thing that I'm going to say that I'd rather eat when I want to set up a comparison. "Visit your cousins in Newark? I'd rather eat shirako. ...with a big spoon and no taco sauce." I'm memorizing this word carefully just in case anyone ever offers it to me. Funny isn't it--fish eggs are fair game, but fish sperm is somehow repulsive. I'm the first to admit that I don't want to be "fish-gay".
hahaha oohhh well it's food i wouldn't eat it though
omg fish sperm. lol
hmm, i'm okay with roe since its from female male juice eh... no thanks :P i though it will be taste great, thanks for telling it though
Well it can't be that bad, considering that fish roe is excellent. I would give it a try had I the chance. Although admittedly the thought does have me a little squeamish.
u know i am sure it may be good but knowing what it is i think i would stay away
塩で下ごしらえをすると 臭みが取れておいしくなります。 フグの白子はクセが無くて おいしゅうございます。 Put some salt before you cook it, then the peculiar smell will be gone. Though some old Japanese men like the smell....
I don't even like fish eggs. no eat this.
this reminds me of rockymountain oysters... and there is no oysters or a sea near teh rockymountains in america... so their really bull testicles... and people like them over there...
i say burn it with fire, thats what >_
when i was in japan i did tasted shirako sushi..taste like fish egg fortunately!!! now that i know what it means...no more!!
I've had it only fried. It's pretty good. I guess it depends on the fish you take the shirako from... the ones I ate weren't that big... what can I say? never say never n_n
