Same here, only listen to jpop that i hear through anime op and ed's
I exclusively listen to Japanese music/songs, but only derived from games and anime. Some of my favorites are from Fate/Stay Night, Erementar Gerad and of course, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I am also an avid fan of Castlevania, Metal Gear Solid and Megaman, Final Fantasy Tactics (Sakimoto anyone?), Valkyrie Profile and Tales of Phantasia (Sakuraba), Xenogears and Chrono Trigger (Mitsuda) and Capcom compositions in general. I resent that JPop that is unrelated to them is quite different... Is it the style of singing? I don't know. As a result, I don't listen to it. I don't know why. I also feel that it truly is different from Occidental songs (which are in my opinion not very original). I would only listen to old standards (70's, 80's and 90's) otherwise. Can anyone tell if he/she feels the same? And on a completely unrelated note, it is very nice to see our Mirai-Chan with new poses and blue outfit. Still I imagine first-time comers going "wtf?" when seeing her crying pose. :p *Returns to darkness*
Haha. I listen to melody. as well I particularly like her 'Be as one' album. For me, I do listen to J-Pop, not exclusive to just OP and EDs. I learnt abit of Japanese as well listening to J-Pop, setting the song on repeat and decoding what the singer is singing ^_____^
I love J-POP ^^ Although majority of my songs are from OP/ED albums, i still enjoy others non featured in animes. I can hardly understand the whole song they sing sometimes but i just love the beats =]
Jpop! Something I sometimes listen to besides Asian kung-Fu Generation, Home Made Kazoku etc. actully, the only Jpop'y singer that I'd say listen to most would be Hikaru Utada (Hikki!). Btw, Danny, I noticed your Mirai uniform is also in blue. very nice, how 'bout flamingo pinku too? XD
I listen to a lot of KOTOKO and I've sound songs though the bulk of it are mostly from eroge. I like a couple of Anime OP/EDS too.
lol luv japanese music umm i like utada hikaru and Yui and chemistry and maybe some of orange range!
Also I listen Chinese Music and Japanese Music of course... Candy Lo, Kelly Chen, Zhang Hui Mei o.0

i listen to anime op/ed songs, and i download a few anime soundtracks like "the end of evangelion" and "cowboy bebop" great tracks
I think J-Pop further enhanced my pronounciation. However, my Japanese is now worse than before, but that's because I'm trying to learn Korean now. I had trouble with Chinese (which is not a good thing because of the rise of China itself and the fact that lots of Chinese people live here in San Jose). I better fix my Chinese soon.
I can't stand any modern Japanese music. So no J-whatever pish for me. However, I like quite a few Japanese bands/musicians from the 70s/80s mainly punk rock bands. Back then Japanese bands WERE bands and Japanese women could think for themselves and weren't western wannabe robot clones. Aye, Them were the days...
hmm i listen and download anime oopening and ending songs. I like artists like nami tamaki, utada, boa juz to mention a few. Recently crazy with nami tamaki haha. >_
Have you ever listened to FictionJunction Yuuka or anything by Yuki Kajiura in general? They are my favorite band ever and I highly recommend listening to them.

Aw man Korean pop from the 90s - those were the days. Thanks for the link to the Solid vid - it's one of my favorite songs from em'. Mem'ries ;)
Man, I loves me some JAM project. Doubt I can learn much Japanese that way, though =P
The early JPOP artist I listen to were people like Utada Hikaru and Ayumi Hamasaki, soon later the only way I could get to know some superb JPOP artist and music where from animes. If the OP/ED where catchy enough then I'll get hold on them on my iPod. But what Danny says is true, you do learn heaps just by listening to JPOP and currently my collection of JPOP artist collection has overshadowed my English artist collection today.
I like Utada Hikaru the best. I also listen to Every Little Thing, Ayumi Hamasaki, Kumi Koda and M-Flo. Funny, the YouTube link you posted with Melody is one of my favourite M-Flo songs and I didn't even know it was Melody's vocals in there! Cool.
Love Japanese music too- especially Japanese hip-hop. I recommend these videos to start with: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j7PDTpgtEXk (Nipps, Gore-Tex & XBS) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1r1X1mj8UGE (Nipps, K-Bomb & Gore-Tex) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LZe-ea9x2Ks (interview with DJ Hi-C) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_Fn32HtwGok (Amazing DJ set from Osaka) These A LOT more where that came from.. Hip-hop is HUGE in Japan.
I listen to an idol group called Morning Musume. They're a group of 9-15 that have been around for more than 7 years, and with each year they add new members while others leave or "graduate". I really suggest everyone try their songs, not only are they great singers, but they're hilarious. Search Youtube for some Morning Musume Mechaike specials such as the Taiikusai or Bakajo.
I love J-Pop, J-HipHop and J-Rock, they are soo good ^_^ I got into Japanese music about 2 years ago, and used to listen to it occasionally, then, after a while, i began listening to it even more, and now, i listen to it all the time ^_^ I don't actually listen to english music anymore...because now, in my opinion, when compared to J-Pop, english music just isn't as lively or exciting xD One thing i love so much about J-Pop and J-HipHop in particular is that they are all soo lively and esepcially in their PV's The only difficulty for me, is getting ahold of the music...i find a band i like, then i need to go and import the CDs, which can be a pain if you really want to listen to the songs ^_^ My favourite band is definately FLOW, i just love the way they are soo crazy and lively. Apart from FLOW, some of the other bands i like are: ZZ, Home Made Kazoku, Afromania, High and Mighty Colour, UVERworld, Asian Kung Fu Generation...and many many more...over half of my music collection is Japanese, and i can't rememeber all the names to hand xD

yea, I definately love melody. Have you ever heard of a group called M-flo? She did a song w/ them called Miss You a couple years ago and that's how she became pretty famous. It's a really good song. You should find it. I love Japanese music in general, not just j-pop.

Hmm interesting, I too started having interest in Japanese because of JPOP, I cannot remembered by first love for JPOP is which Singer or Group but generally this lead me to have interest in J stuffs, I got my music CD from Music stores but after starting to watched animation i started to search for the singers who sang the OP/ED songs which made me to buy more CDs, My first source is from CDjapan which was introduce by my friend, then I started to purchase from Amazon. Even DVDs and some games I getting them from amazon, they are more complete compared to CDjapan,
Like a lot of people here, I have started to like j-music in general thanks to anime OP/ED. When I really love one song, I search for artist name and others non-anime-related-albums. For j-pop, it's more through Final Fantasy X-2 songs, and Koda Kumi ^^ Talking about karoke bars, it would be great if oneday you wrote an article about them, Danny :D Or maybe go there with your Vador armor hehe. I'm sure we are a lot folks who are interrested in karaoke bars, and would like to see them in an other way than through animes ^^
don't listen to her music but she's hot. M-flo's garbage...Korea has a better rap scene imo haha

In all honesty, I find the majority of j-pop annoying, but there are a few individuals that I find really good. For example, Utada Hikaru would be one of them, and that guy (I forgot his name) who did the theme song to Kaze no Haruka. He also sings a song called "Sakura". Regards,
I don't enjoy JPOP,i do listen to the some J-Rock thou(None of the Visual Kei bands thou). My music of preference would be Doom/Stoner Rock and Drone. Bands like Church Of Misery,Earthride,Boris,Electric Magma...etc.
Yeah, i listen to J-Pop/Rock. Been listening to Japanese music longer than ive been watching Anime tbh, then again, my interest in anime developed from my interest in Japan, and not the other way around. Anyway, lately ive been enjoying ELLEGARDEN's and Younha's [Korean debut] lastest releases. And for where i get mine from, well... First started getting my music from Amazon Japan, but now i get most of it from HMV Japan. But yeah, big fan of the J-music scene. ^_^
I love listening JPop music because of its melody and it's catchy. Sometimes, I listen to these songs when I have free time.
iv only started lising to jpop so all iv realy got so far is a copel ofNana Kitade alboms and some anime ost likeMai HiME OST Collection and Eureka Seven - OST but im sure itll gro i hope
Someone said "MFLO is garbage", that person must be out of their mind, or they havent listened to every Mflo album. There style has developed so much and any artist that does a collaboration with them is bound to blow up, so i guess mflo can't me that much "garbage". I frequently listen to m-flo and a whole lot more, I'm in the music business and hiphop always does good but everything sounds the same. A person can only rap about guns , girls , cars , and "other things i have and you never will" before the listener will be turned off. I was turned off a long time ago. sorry for ranting.
I've just a couple of quick notes. Just to be picky, melody. should be spelled just as it is shown on the album cover (all lower case and with a period at the end). To our friend Piecemakr from Southern California who said that m-flo is garbage and that Korea has a better rap scene, note that VERBAL (the rapper) from m-flo is Korean ^_^
It's not all I listen to, but it sure is a hell of a lot. I love Ayumi Hamasaki, Utada Hikaru, Nami Tamaki, T.M. Revolution, ORANGE RANGE (if you want to call them JPop), and so much more. Two of my favorite songs are Step You and Evolution by Ayumi Hamasaki.
Also, Hawaza Kae's Glamourus Sky from the NANA movie is really good. And the thing I love about Japanese Music is that Anime theme songs are full fleged songs by hot artists, unlike American shows where hey create a little jingle for the show...

Melody's past albums have been so bubblegummy. If she could ever stray away from it then I would be overwhelmed with joy to listen to her music again. If you like Utada Hikaru her latest song that aired in the 2nd season of 花より男子 was a pleasant surprise. After recovering from a terrible album in the U.S. she has finally returned to making quality music. I've recently been getting into a group called Monkey Majik -- phenomenal artists.
Hmmm just to add another comment - M-Flo IS garbage its totally fake hip-hop , even though they have a few catchy tunes. If you want to check out REAL japanese hip-hop (by real I mean those who actually made music BEFORE they made money from it, and werent just thrown together by a Japanese label like AVEX TRAX...) Some groups I recomend: *Buddha Brand *Scha Dara Par (スチャダラパー) *Gagle *Robele Yoshino & Cypress Ueno *Zeebra *Rumi *Rino Latino II *Nipps *Think Tank (K-Bomb & Baba) *DJ Kensei (Indopepsychics) Forget Utada Hikaru etc. She cant even sing well! I saw her on stage concert - she couldnt even carry a note.. Oh, there are some dope Korean hip-hop acts too but all VERY underground - I'm not talking about those pop bands. Sorry , I cant recommend any names.

J-Pop (J-Rock, etc), has been a great way for me to maintain some kind of a connection with my culture (I was born in Japan, but have spent most of my time in the US. When I was younger I couldn't really get into it, but as my appreciation for my background grew, so did my love of Japanese music. Currently my favorites include: FLOW http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=240:c=1577211 Ketsumeishi http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=100:c=1585720 Asian Kung Fu Generation http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=260:c=1577038 Tommy Heavenly 6 http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=380:c=1575463 Hi-Standard http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=360:c=1575774 Do As Infinity http://j-list.livedigital.com/#:t=channelAll:o=60:c=1593258 among others.
I totally listen to only JPOP and chillout music nowadays. There's sooo many artist and bands I really like. Koda Kumi (cause she got a great bod and voice), YUI, Kotoko, Asian Kung-Fu Generation, Home Made Kazoku, Ai Otsuka and HIGH and MIGHTY COLOR. Thats only the tip of the iceberg for me. But somehow I dun feel my Japanese is improving even though I been listening to JPOP for more than 3 years. =p

I don't listen to much J-pop, but I do listen to a ton of J-rock, indie stuff, electro, and metal. Actually, I'm running a column on Japanator right now that features many Japanese bands. I focus on one letter a week. A, B and C are up now, with D-E up tomorrow. Check them out! Oh, and Polysics is my favorite band of all time. http://www.japanator.com/zbs-a-z-of-j-music-a http://www.japanator.com/zbs-a-z-of-j-music-b http://www.japanator.com/zbs-a-z-of-j-music-c
For me, I listen to just about any Japanese song that I like from either animes or videogames. I don't really care about the genre as long as I like it.
Gah, that picture took my breath away for a second. She's cute. Jpop is pretty cool though i dont know any good artist.
I heared some anime OPs & EDs in the past. But now I enjoy to listen J-pop/rock like Hitomi Takahashi & ELLEGARDEN (this both I'd recommend). I like them more than the english music and I don't know why... To your questions I get the resources and news at their official site or at Wikipedia (english ver.)
I rarely listen to the newer J-pops, I usually get interested in a song when I hear it through an anime or a game.
I haven't been keeping up-to-date, but Anna Tsuchiya and Olivia from the "NANA" anime were probably the first to spark my interest outside of anime OSTs... The English-fluent Rie Fu also comes to mind...
I'm surprise you listen to Ribbon. I like their sister group better, "CoCo." COCO FOREVER!
My ALL TIME FAVOURITE although isn't considered in the jpop genre but more like jrock is XJAPAN. Best band I have ever listned to. But I have stuck with Hamasaki Ayumi for a long time. Nearly have her entire discography.
Most of my exposure to J-Pop has come from the openings and endings of certain anime series, and I've only really been into J-Pop for a couple of years now. Right now though, I have a lot more Japanese songs than I do ones in English. Besides the most famous J-Pop singers like Ayumi Hamasaki and Utada Hikaru, some of my favorite artists are Bonnie Pink, Hitomi Shimatani, and Mika Nakashima. The J-rock/J-Pop bands Do As Infinity, Puffy, Every Little Thing, The Brilliant Green (Tommy Heavenly6) are all great, and most of them have some nice trance/house remixes. Gackt, T.M. Revolution, and High and Mighty Color have had a lot of their songs used in various Gundam series, and are all pretty good. There are lots of other genres of Japanese music though. GO!GO!7188 is a catchy surfer-rock/J-ska group, and there are lots of Visual Kei bands out there too. Luna Sea is one of my all-time favorite bands, and Kagrra(,) Antic Cafe, and alice nine(.) are all great visual kei bands. Well, that pretty much sums up my taste in Japanese music. I hope it wasn't too long. :D
I listen to JPOP, but I enjoy Jrock better. My favorite band is Asian Kung-fu Generation.

I like J-Pop, but I prefer J-Rock like L'arc en ciel, Dir En Grey, XJapan, THE PILLOWS, and some other stuff. Surprised you like Ribbon though, they are pretty good, IMO.
Also thought you'd be as excited as I am- According to Gunota a GFF of the Musha Gundam has been announced (Regular and Musou Gundam ver.) Maybe you will see one at the Gunpla fair and take tons of pictures? Or pick it up when it is released for a review?

Ah great post! I've been in love with the pillows ever since FLCL, and have been meaning to bring all 180+ songs from my old comp to this one.. -_-' I also love Do As Infinity, it's interesting to hear what's on LastFM. BTW, what do you call Tokyo Jihen? I have no idea how to label Japanese music. Since the only thing really keeping me up with Japan pop culture is this site!
I love Melody too! She's from Hawaii and got that great smile. http://japansugoi.com/wordpress/a-beautiful-melody-from-hawaii/
Johnny, Whats Jihen? BlueDestiny, Ah - I knew that Musha would turn out as a GFF. Ciccone, Not long at all ^^ Winfield, The song you are talking about was the video I posted ^^; SG, Will see what Mirai looks like in Pink ^^;

Melody is HOT, I want her to have my children ..... =P
I listen to a lot of JPop. In fact all mp3s in my pc are of the japanese variety. JPop, JRock and etc. heheh! ^^ One of my all time faves are Utada Hikaru, BoA, Orange Range, Asian Kung-Fu Generation and Shimokawa Mikuni. :D
I like Shibuya-kei and classical Japanese music more than I like J-poppu generally. Don't get me wrong I do listen to and enjoy J-poppu, but only if I like the tune. It's the same with any kind of music.
These days the only J-Pop/Rock I listen are from the OPs/EDs from anime. But a few years ago I used to listen to everything (good or bad). :P And nice to know you learned Korean that way too, I'm trying to do that right now. BTW Danny, do you know Seo Taiji ?

I listen all the time KAT-TUN i like them.
I listen to Jpop when I can get my hands on some, but Im a metal head at heart, if u can add some coverage of some J-Metal that would be great as Ive heard quite a few but I know not of many J-metal bands... as a request this might seem a little far fetched & I understand that you are busy or that it might not be your kind of music.. but any recommendations or websites (even in Japanese I can get in translated) on J-metal would be much apreciated,
I do listen to JPop sometimes, but I still listen more to games OST than Jpop.
I like to listen to JPOP too, especially by Ayumi or BoA, both of them sing quiet nice ^^
I love JPOP too. ^_^ I love any songs that's nice to hear. =) I think this is a good site~

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tokyo_Jihen I was told Tokyo Jihen (Or Tokyo Incidents) were pretty big in Japan? I have no idea. Heres a pretty fun song, theres tons of Jihen vids on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M83YXRlP5X4

Mostly Ayumi Hamasaki (i'm going to her in 2 weeks ;p), Gazette, some High and Mighty Color, i also like Nobuchika Eri, some Gackt, Hirano Aya, and some others too, and many anime OP, ED & OSTs :) But I more like to JPop than western (english) music. I become fed up with english music because it became a bit repetitive (and don't like those male singers like those Pop Idol winners... which are popular now). I like J-Pop (or J-Rock) because it's different. Ok, it's a different language, but it sounds different too a bit (and Ayu rulez, hehe ;p)
I love j-pop so much! I forced myself to learn japanese because i really wanted to understand the jpop lyrics... and i found it really cool. I love the music of High and Mighty Color (maki is a goddess), Asian Kungfu Generation, Beat Crusaders, L'arc en ciel (cool blues!), and... Utada Hikaru (i love this girl) and also Hyde (goes solo from L'arc)... also, Nobody Knows, i love their rap music... I love jpop, that's it.
I like J-rock more than j-pop, since it's not emo like most western bands are.

I love Jpop and Jrock! I like WaT, L'Arc-En-Ciel, Utada Hikaru, Pierrot, Shimokawa Mikuni and LAST ALLIANCE...

why don't u watch music station too? thought that's the most popular music prog in japan that gives u all the info u need bout jpop musics

I absolutely love J-pop and J-Rock myself. Some of my favorite artists include: Ajikan, L'arc-en-ciél, Ayumi Hamasaki, and Yukarin. Sometimes i even listen to japanese blues and jazz.
hi.. i'm a newbie around and i love this site!!!! anyways... i love TOKYO JIHEN or SHIINA RINGO music... i encourage you to listen to them... theyre very good artist!!!! they are very creative! different genre like fusion but in jazzy style... i also like orange pekoe when it comes to jazz/bossanova feel! i wish tokyo jihen could go in philippines.. huhuhuhuuhuu
If you're a fan of Shiina Ringo, you should check out Hitomi Yaida (if you haven't already). It's said that their styles are very similar ^^
they're more than good, they're awesome! ZOMFG!!!!111ONEONEONE!11 Shiina Ringo FTW! her vocals on OSCA makes me want to wax dolphins ^^
I love J-pop. By the way, every month I propose a J-pop playlist (called J-List) on the musiqueradio.com website. Tell me what do you think about :)
I love J Musics too, same as the others, mostly I listen to anime and game songs. For me J Musics are unique, they just sound different ^^
Jpop is all I listen to these days May J Ken-U Teriyaki Boys M Flo
I'm a big fan of Japanese music. I listen to Utada Hikaru (宇多田ヒカル), Go!Go!7188, Yaida Hitomi (矢井田瞳), L'Arc~en~Ciel, Pistol Valve, Boom Boom Satellites, some Koda Kumi, Namie Amuro, AKFG, Shaka Labbits, various game and anime soundtracks and quite a few others. I don't know what it is about Japanese music that has caught my attention so much. I find that a lot of American music just doesn't interest me very much. The talent level seems to be falling further and further down the scale every year. I don't know, maybe there is just more of an emphasis put on the music itself by Japanese artists?
I used to listen to Jpop all the time - still have tons of it. But I've moved on to other genres so I don't listen too it that much anymore. I can still dig it though.
I listen to jpop to jrock... I love listening to japanese music more then I listen to chinese and english... I also do learn some japanese through listening to jrock and jpop...
