Hong Kong ?
I kinda have to say yes on the milk drinker part. I myself a milk drinker and man do i love eyes or what!
I was just in Shanghai last year during the month of October. It was alright.
@Danny, I dont know about the milk thing. But I like milk, and eyes are my favorite thing ever!!! Lol. I prefer at least a C. Shanghai looks nice.
Rule of thumb visiting China market/ street shops: - always have small change(money) - dont ever touch things you dont want to buy - triple check your balance - dont carry fancy handbags You never know when shit happens. My mom's experience =__=" However, you're pretty much safe in the Town complexes

Loved that city when i went there!, and i always laugh at the pirated dvd's got a few sitting in my room right now!
Your cuz is hot! That guy is lucky :O
Man, China sure was fun. I was in China a couple years ago for a martials arts (Wushu) competition over in Zheng Zhou, and the southern shaolin temple. Was also there for beijing. went clubbing there...flipping awesome. and went to shanghai a few months later... All i can say is that, if u want a real good massage of any type. go to china. though...china sure is diiirrrrtttyyyy. man, i remember my first night there i went to blow my nose....yeah...pretty disgusting. dont think i saw the sun at all the whole time i was there. haha
Ah, I've been waitin for this post since I'm heading over soon. Thanks for putting up tonnes of pics Danny-san. Danny, don't suppose u got a figure of you & the wife made @ that place, did ya? As I recall, some ppl here requested your figure ^^; Congrats to your cousin and her hubby. They look very happy. Wonder if I'll like it over there, but I'll mostly be in the newer urban areas. People keep telling me to watchout for trouble. It doesn't look very 'troublesome' to me, and trust me I've seem my share of it.
I remember being asked by a stranger if I wanted any girls (Paid sex) while with a group of friends over at Nanjing road (We were on a study trip). Just for laughs, I kindly declined and replied "Do you have men instead" in which he gave an answer which left me stunned for a while "Yes we have". I smiled, declined again and quickly got out of there! The Huangpu River area is a absolutely lovely place. I really love the illuminations from the buildings from both sides. I see some Yu Tiao(fried dough) in the deep fried goodies picture :) Nice cousin!
First girl is Charlene Choi and the guy is Aaron Kwok. I'm suprised at how much Shanghai's changed since I last visited!
Finally a post about 上海, was waiting for it seeing as I'm Canadian/Shanghainese. Actually planning to visit in May after my exams are done and was wondering how it looked now, haven't gone back in 7 or 8 years. Good to see it's a lot more modernized from what I can remember. Was actually expecting some pictures of the older style buildings with the temples, but I guess you didn't visit any of the tourist places. So are there any otaku related places to visit in Shanghai? There's no ero publications because the government forbids it, they also block all adult-oriented sites on the internet. Food looks very yummy, kind of curious to how much it costed in RMB. I know that fast food places like KFC and Micky Ds are still about the same price as here. I think the milk thing is quite true, but you don't have to be a fan of milk to like eyes....lol PS. congrats on your cousin's marriage and best wishes to them.
i haven't visited the major cities like Beijing or Shanghai. i do however been to Shenzen (the city near the HK-China border) ^^
@Windbell-san LOL! That's a very interesting piece of information. Yea, I too like Yu Tiao (or Yau Cha Kwai in cantonese), but it's very oily and greasy. I think I gained 10 pounds from my last trip to China. LOL @ open source anime dvds. You don't need to go to Shanghai for that, you can find everything you need at Pacific Mall. Damnit, I can't wait to go back this summer. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and post them.
Looks like an interesting place to visit but I do not speak any Chinese so would be hard to go to Shanghai. I speak little Japanese so I'm always able to get by during few trips to Japan but I wouldn't have a faintest idea what to do in Shanghai x_x
I am a Chinese and live in Shanghai.Mybe next time I can help you visit here.
I went to China last summer for vacation, but unfortunately on a crummy tour, so I couldn't stay anywhere very long. (The whole tour was like "OH HAY look at this place take a picture okay and now let's go!") Shanghai is very beautiful at night though. Wish I could have stayed a little longer. I did come across some funky products though. I remember Pokemon Shineygold in particular. The front of the box had a bird from some other RPG (can't remember which one), while the back had the whole "this seal is your assurance that this is an officially licensed product by nintendo" when there was no seal to be found. Also, congrats to your cousin and her husband!
LOL so shanghai street ain't much different from indonesia eh i got A LOT of that crappy DVD, more like all my anime came from it (downloading here is to expensive) o btw, that fried egg-ed flour is martabak telur (telur=egg), i love it, just don't eat it to many, some a-hole here like to re-use the oil they have used, i dunno about shanghai case and about the other fried thing, indo call it cakweh, i dunno the chinese like martabak telur, a lot of ppl here like to re-use the oil to fry that thing.
can't help myself with this. it's my hometown. i'm living here right now. Everything seems to be familiar. Never know you have such relationship with this city. Thanks for sharing this! ^_^
LOL@ Open Source Animes... but that res is awful! Couldn't they make like Open Source Animes Brazil and sell more DVDs with decent res? :P You a tea person Danny? I got very nice jasmine tea from Yokohama's Chinatown... Also, your cousin is very pretty. I see she got her hands on a tall husband... :P
i thought shanghai was really fun when i visited last year! definitely will go back again. open source dvds! ill file that under my new words to use category. ^^
I agree with you xsportseeker, danny's cousin is pretty. is there a close up photo of her?
danny your cousin looks gorgeous. ^^; do you have more relatives living in other counties as well?
Last year my family went on a trip to Shanghai but I refused to go lol. Don't really like that place too much... Maybe I might visit China in the future (after I visit Japan first LOL). p.s. Your cousin's pretty~
That bamboo scaffolding always looks pretty scary. I'd hate to be working up on that stuff. >_< Or any other high place for that matter...
i already went to china since my cousins live there but now i dont want to go back because of the serious mosquito bites i got that were the length of tennis balls and i have to tell ya not scratching them is hard then it actually is
Yucks, that live prawn drenched with vinegar looks just as freaky as the fish sperm. By the way Danny, you're not a lactose intolerant person are you? That's quite a surprise since you're Chinese ^_^ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lactose_intolerant#Lactose_intolerance_by_group Maybe it's because you grew up in England ^_^
Nice article, I'd love to visit Shanghai one day. I went to Hong Kong a couple of years ago, DVDs were really cheap compared to Western prices, I'm not sure if they were open source or just cheap. I did get an open source Paul Frank watch for about 5 USD though. I also found a market store selling open source Lego!!! Can you do a "week in South Korea" - I'd love to visit it some day as not many tourists go there compared to China.
The nice girl on the first pic is Charlene Choi from Twins.
It is nice to see my hometown being featured. I didn't like it that much when I lived there, but now when I visit it, I always thought about what it would be like if I never left it. The buildings that I was used to see were no longer there, the school I went destroyed, the people I knew gone. It seems the things from my past are all destroyed. I still miss the food there, especially the pancake looking thing. Most of the food preparation cart looking things are run by people not from Shanghai, from the picture, it seems it might have become popular. Ahh Shanghai, how can I miss you so if I cannot call you home?
The guy in the picture is Aaron Kwok:)
they're still putting coins next to the food as usual
Yea I like 燒肉 too. Glad that we have something in common in that department :). And as for the thunder noises from falling bamboos around construction areas, it's relatively common even in Hong Kong. People simply just stay away from the area, mainly because of the noise and the dust they produce. And last but not least, congratualtions for your cousin.
Nice
The only place in China that I have been to is Hong Kong. Its a nice place. Oh, was curious though, how do you communicate to the folks in the public in Shanghai? Do you speak mandarin, Danny? :D
"Nanjing road: A nice place to relax" Lol ! When I went in Shanghai, I stayed in a hotel along Nanjing Road, right next to a huge TV screen. This thing kept playing the same advertising over and over again, day and night. The tune drove me crazy ! I would add that Nanjing Road can be very crowed and busy... In summer actually, maybe not in winter ^^ On the other hand, I agree with you, Danny. I really felt Shanghai has a real "vibe". Especially in comparison to Beijing which is bigger, more cultural but more plain... Nice night pictures too !
That first chick is Charlene Choi, part of the Twins pop group. Very cute, and so is the other one (Gillian Chung). I wanted to go to Shanghai in my visit to China, that and Hong Kong (but getting into Hong Kong is bothersome). But I went to Beijing and Guangzhuo so that's 2/4 of places I wanted to go there.
I am a big milk fan too and I would say that eyes are beautiful and sometimes sexy... yes. Not sure if the two are connected though, maybe that is a coincidence. Oh well, I've drank milk since the age of 3 and I have not had a broken bone since. China has never been on my visit list but it does look very interesting- Shanghai looks very bustling and I bet within a couple of years China will be totally self sufficient (if it isn't already) before the USA! Hope we do that kind of thing soon.... That tower looked very interesting- do you remember how large the roller coaster was?
You have a beautiful cousin Danny, "Lucky fella", LOL! Drunk prawn dish, LOL! Anyway, I think Shanghai looks like a great place to visit but i would like to go to Japan first~
The drunken prawns here are usually dead/cooked before they're served. Would like to try those live ones thou :p
Last time I went to Shanghai (summer '06) we went to this place I like to call the "Pirate Market" because 99.999% of the stuff sold there is pirated brand names. They always jack the price up too, but you can barter it down to about 15% of what they originally said haha. Brought all of it back to the States no problem. Well, actually Hong Kong, then the States. I guess they have some kind of issue with that in Japan?
