As a student I don't earn anything since my parents money is my money and I only ask when I need it, the only money I get is on birthday and christmas. Normally both work and manage the money together, the womens don't stay at home anymore which is good on one side and bad on the other (for some people). I like the idea of having my woman working and not be dependent on my money, so if anything were to happen to me she would still have her job as support.
My japanese partner studys still (shes 35!!) I am the only income between us two but she doesnt manage our money still! I spend what I want, she trusts my judgment and handeling of moneys :) We are doomed!!...she doesnt know about the new computer i ordered this weekend!! *hides*

I'm really surprised, I thought the average income would be more than that in Japan. I work for an architecture firm and my entry level pay was 1400 USD a month.
Normally I'd get around $1000 a month during the summer, but less than $500 during the school year. But as a cafeteria worker in the school, worst job ever, i'm still pretty happy. Unlike my co-workers... I'm a work 1-hour, sleep 2-hours, get payed 3-hours lucky guy. Awesome- yet no girl >.
Damn the fig rocks! My wife's an accountant, so she does the sums and tells me how much is needed for the home, expenses, investment plans and the like. The balance I get to use to maintain my toy gallery.
i get only what i earn from work... stopped having an allowance since the end of my national service...
i noticed the sonsaku hakufu in your picture- can't wait till mine arrives!
I get around 300 to 400 US dollars a month as "go wild" money which I commonly save (I am frugal about my spending). I am taking out a loan for college and part of the expenses will be whatever I need/want to buy ^^. The more I buy though, the more I will end up paying back, plus interest!
Strange, I thought the older generation received more payment as they gathered more years under their belt, probably the younger generation has more "technical jobs" that pay more, who knows. Where I live, generally the man is the "money-maker" but many wives have jobs as well and both do the accounting work.
i'm still begging money to my parents T_T, i want my self earned money T_T
i earn not that big nor not that small either but it's really hard to earn some income that's why i've been searching and researching for a business and earn some more extra income ^^ if ever i earn something, i save a fixed amount and deposit it to my bank account first before i spend it to stuff ^^
Time of pocket money is over as well, I only have what I earn from work ^^; (still waiting for that hawt Hakufu btw hehe)
Pocket money? Im a grown up who earns my keep! Saying that though, i still live with my folks, and as a result dont have to pay many bills, so theres no major limit on my spending either ^_^

ap: Vista is pretty bad from what I have seen. My room-mate recently bought a brand new Dell laptop with Vista pre-installed, the first thing that happened when it booted up was to present two nice error messages about some system processes failing.. I then tried to get into the control panel which took about 4 minutes before it totally crashed out. It is also generally quite slow and unstable (even with all the fancy graphical stuff turned off). Wait until there is an SP1 I think..

Oops, wrong tab. That last post should be under the 'Apple Japan' topic.
Both my wife and I work. But we do 'pool our money' in a shared account with all the regular expenses drawn from here. We then each receive an equal part in two Visa accounts pr. month. If we then need something for the house, like a new TV - we draw from the 'pool'.
I only get the bare minimum I need to buy school lunch, so sometimes I skimp on food to buy figures...
Barely surviving at the moment, with students loans I have to repay and taxes plus everyday expense. Yare yare XD
Geh, it's hard to be a fanboy when you're working as a cook. You work hard and you don't earn much, but still, you appreciate every cent earned more. Plus, your eyes and ears grow more attuned to info on bargains, hehehe.
currently only earning a minimal amount from my national service.. but from what i see, spending just depend on the person itself.

Do the husbands ever get annoyed if the wife doesn't allocate the money well? i.e what if she gives him no pocket money? I figure if i earn the money then i manage the money because i hate other people touching it (unless it's a bank, and then only if i get more money in return :D).

It does seem that in Japan, men earn and women manage, but there was an interesting article in the Times newspaper in the UK a few days ago which talked of the rising number of japanese housewife online traders. They deal mostly in the foreign exchange markets but they have become quite powerful in the trading arena. Guess the women don't just manage anymore!!
That's how I'm taught too. My wife-to-be manages the money while I go out working for it. There is of course more pocket money and more control of "raises" because I own two companies...so I'm the one who states if I want a raise. Back in my 9-5, I felt like a slave to the call of a mindless boss. Also, pocket money was rather small if any because Uncle Sam took all of the extra and my boss complained that he had no money so I couldn't make anymore money with a raise or overtime pay.
Like many Japanese ladies, my wife handles our money. We've been married for 12 years now and we rarely argue about money these days. A few years ago we created two new bank accounts. His, Hers, Ours. We decided that 15% of our respective paychecks would go into our individual accounts as our "spending money" That money would cover hobby money, clothing, eating out, and other individual spending. Since then our debts have pretty much disappeared because there is normally plenty of money in the joint account to pay down debt. Now we're saving money for a future adoption and an upgrade to a new house. The method of dividing up our money also means that my wife is contributing and equal share of her money to the family. There is never an argument over who is pulling their fair share of the load. Since I took a new job, back in June, that 15% means I've got a pretty good amount of spending money ;)
Could you clear something up for me danny. Is that amount you posted the wage of an average salaryman or is that the amount allocated for him to spend (salary minus the expenses and etc)? It's hard to find a high paying job especially when you're just starting to work and don't have that much experience. Before I changed jobs I used to get $100 max for pocket money since the pay was kinda small. But now I'm happy to say I get to spend around $300 or more on hobby stuff. XD Most of the stuff I buy tends to be quite expensive. heheh! Good thing the gf doesn't complain. We like the same things (figures, anime, games and more). Expensive hobby really. ^^ We both have our own accounts + a shared account in the bank and we deposit a portion of the total amount we earn the entire year into our shared account for future use. :D
Danny is definitely talking about the amount of spending money that the salaryman receives out of the household income. Annual income in Japan is based on millions of yen-- and the monthly amounts Danny mentioned are about half a million per year.
Wow... I *REALLY* don't like the whole idea of the "stay home wife"...no matter what country or background you're from. A Woman shouldn't have to rely on their husbands for money, I believe a woman has just a right to be in the workplace as men. Relying on someone else is just ASKING for trouble.. what if you get divorced? The man still has a freaking job, but what about the ex-wifey? All broke and no where to go. As awesome as Japan is, there are quite a few down sides..
COFFEE?? DRUGSS?!! Lol..maybe...anyway, my pocket money i got from my mum is *ahem* not enough..mainly my fault on spending it too fast..
i'm lucky enough to manage my own money so all of it is "pocket money" :) I think it's not a bad thing that the housewife manages the money. Woman are way better and more serious with money than most of the men. But it only works if you can fully trust your wife or gf... ;)
Good evening Danny... I'm on vacation right now...heheh. But i didn't resist to come see the new posts from u! This is a nice one. My and my wife both work and manage the personal income separated. I admint i'm pretty bad in this^^, but my wife is amazingOO! I'd like in the future having she at home managing the income like urs do, unfortunatly for now my salary is not enough. But i'm working hard to improve my position! .:G:.

I dont know how it is in other parts of the US, but women seem to be pretty bad with money in Arizona. They actually have classes at banks aimed specifically to teach women how to save. If you think about this, this means that they have to go above and beyond the normal information to get women to do it right! Im sure this isnt true of all women, but it seems to be the norm. Women tend to spend money on a lot of frivolous things that they dont end up wanting a week later. Most women here dont even know what an IRA is or what mutual funds are for. Its concerning because they expect that a man will always be there to provide the money.
Don't think my fiancee will reduce me to pocket money status. ^^ Right now she doesn't mind what I spend, but I do hear it if she thinks an item is to expensive. You know what I mean by "hear". ^^; No no, we don't argue about money. I have no problem letting her handle finances. She is an accountant so I have no worries.
Army RTOC stipend + NG MUTA5 Drill pay at E-5 rank + parents allowance = beer, ammunition, food and gas money...usually in that order.
the navy gives me an allowance for clothes and oter kinds of stuff but i bank most of my pay
I am very much under paid and can't afford that Proch Cayman that I want. Someday if I hit the lottery I will not bother to tell my wife.... nor my girlfriend :p
correction: Porsche. pardon my english
Right now I make about 2200 USD a month, but it'll drop back to 0 USD in September when I go back to school :(
This was a really interesting post for me-- especially since I will very soon marry into a Japanese family, and my fiancee and I really want to move (back) to Japan. I, myself, am a "salaryman," but my fiancee works full time too. We currently manage our own individual spending money, but we own our own home together and share the expenses for it. Since I do quite well in my career, my fiancee does not really *need* to work, and when we move to Japan, it might be possible that she will assume the role of "housewife." It's up to her, though. I certainly would not mind if she took over the management of the household income; there would not be any need for there to be limits on my spending. Figures, manga, CDs, food and drugs (coffee, cigarettes and sometimes alcohol) is where my spending money goes. I have never seen one of those ni-sen-en notes, they look kool! I LOVE the figure, too!
Since I am working I guess none, but I cap myself at no more than $100 per month. Got to save for that apartment Danny ^^
Oh darn it, i'm spending so much of my Okozukai for my anime video collections. I can't help it. XDD
i spent too much!!! help me!!!
Husband and I both have to work, no way around it. It's very expensive where I live! Hopefully when we move somewhere cheaper I can work part time, and I am going to start studying soon for an at-home career...so maybe I can be a housewife & make some money :)
PS. All my extra money goes to figures and manga...sometimes fashion/makeup too but not really.
Come to think of it, my trip to Japan is during the Olympics. Maybe it wouldn't be so hard for me to make a side trip to China and, while all the citizens are occupied with being forced by the government to enjoy the Games at gun-point, take back whatever my job was supposed to be when I got to this stage in my life.
I feel that the pocket money I get isn't enough... But I still believe that I'm better off than some people and I'm grateful for that... I spend my money on hobby stuff, mostly on manga...
I recieve none especially now since my dad had a stroke last month.
A guy I know is in trouble because his wife controlled the bank accounts and she got into an accident so he was unable to access the money to pay business expenses while she was in hospital... a really shitty situation
I don't get pocket money. I work in the family business, when i'm not at college...I don't get paid T_T
