If you are sending your kids to school in Japan and they come home complaining about hunger every day, then its probably because you are sending them to Sendai Primary school...

Below is a comparison of meals at different primary schools dotted around Japan (larger image here). Thrown in for good measure are photos of prison meals and what meals looked like in 1927 and 1950.
Now compare that to what kids are eating at Sendai Primary school (the bottom two photos). Pretty evident that the headmaster is pocketing tuition fees to buy Candy Girls.
You can see more photos of Sendai Primary School meals at Itai News.

This reminds me of a particular meal I had when I was in Stoke Newington Primary school back in London. I was cutting into a mince pie when I saw something squisshy that had white hairs on it. On closer inspection I see that it was a freshly baked hairy caterpillar. Yum.

Like skiddy pants ^^; I was lucky enough to afford my own lunch when I was at primary school. But the food was rubbish anyhow; menu was always chips, burger, pizza or pie.. ugh. Anything drowned in fat, grease or salt, cheap stuff. Surprised anyone could survive class on that kind of diet.

if you had worse than skiddy pants my school's food would be it. overpriced, full of grease, sugar, salt, fat preservatives and all in between.

Those japanese students got it good. well except for sendai. pity those poor kids, their meals look almost as bad as refugee food.

I never had eaten at my schools cafeteria until I went to college. My college has at least two major places to eat, the cantina and the student committee bar, you pay at least one extra € to eat at the student bar but its a lot better than the cafeteria and they serve almost jumbo sized meals, eating at college is great ^^ (well at least here)

High School meals in the US are loaded with one thing: FATS. I try to avoiid it whenever I can. Heck I even wrote a letter to the Mayor complaining about cafeteria food for an economics project (didn't get very far though). Now that I'm in college, we have to pay for lunch...

My college's food is decent, but overpriced. I still try to eat at home or starve myself sometimes just to save some money for figures/models. Anyway, this really sucks. Poor kids.

School Lunches weren't ever too bad where I went to school, pigs in a blanket, spaghetti, mac n cheese, and all ways fish on Fridays. Nice thing was if they had left overs you could get seconds, very important for a growing boy like me, 'cause I was almost always hungry.

the cafeteria is not owned by the school and it's operated by a SME (Small-Medium Enterprise) and we have 2 competing SMEs but they still serve skiddy pants food >.>

when i've reached college, i started eating outside where it's much cheaper and in large servings ^^

My mom never believed in school lunches so I never ate cafeteria lunches. Junior High was where the food was great. I would cheat and buy lunch in the cafeteria without my mom knowing. ^^; The cooks in the cafeteria had owned an Italian restaurant for several years. We use to get the best lasagna and such... I always went back for seconds.

College was the best and has gotten even better. About a year ago the University of Florida expanded the student union. Just about every fast food chain you could think of along with sushi and Italian. I want to go back to college. ^o^ I want to go back to Florida...

We have similar problems in the USA. When I was in school the food was OK, but it was definetly not good for you. The high school pizza was ok, but I would never eat the rest of the food.

I find it odd the tikes in Japan are starving, over in the USA they are fighting over an obesity crisis =X

Oddly enough, it reminds me not of the food I had during my school years (which was adequate, but not "good"), but of the food I had while in Japan for a semester a year and a half ago.

Your average-size bento always seemed ridiculously small, but I felt like a glutton if I ordered larger ones (or multiples). Even after padding them out with fruit (usually mikan) and snacky things (anman, especially) during non-mealtimes, I still ended up losing substantial amounts of weight.

Granted, coming from the US, maybe this shouldn't surprise me - after all, we enjoy excess, and I've been accustomed to that all my life. Nevertheless, I'll be spending a year there starting in September, and I'm a little worried: am I going to have to buy new suits halfway through because the old ones will be too big?

...okay, rant over.

primary schools here doesn't offer heavy meals, coz whats the point of having your lunch meal, when you can have it at home? primary school and secondary school's hours is from 7.30/8.00am to 12.30/1.00pm(that for "morning session" students) or from 12.30/1.00pm. Extra curriculum activities are on Saturdays. During secondary school, i went into boarding school. My timetable everyday was always full. School hours in the morning, preparation class in the evening and at night. After 10pm, we free to do things in the hostel. With that kind of schedule, the school provide us with 5 meal course: Morning breakfast, morning tea(thats recess at around 10am i guess), lunch, evening tea (around 4pm), dinner and lastly supper at 10pm(after prep. class). ^_^

my school meals was just nasty... they're either too small portioned or tasteless, which is the least of my worries... sometimes you get odds and ends in there... somewhat like your big fat juicy caterpiller, bleah...

i rather pack from home... nothing beats a home made BLT, a fruit and a carton of milk ^.^

They tasted awful and were full Junk at my primary school and the same goes for the secondary school I'm at now. Then Jamie Oliver came a long with his TV Show about School Dinners and the Gonvernment was forced to make the food healthier. Little did they no the food would become 100 x more crap when they did. Also, the UK is catching onto a new way of paying for School Meals. It's ridiculous imo. At my school, instead of giving the lunch ladies cash to buy stuff, you need to use a swipe card which must be topped up via cheques paid to the school. I've given up on school lunches as of last year and I now bring my own lunch to school, and as for the swipe card, It's probably somewhere under my bed collecting dust, like it should be. > < Long Reply, Gomen...

New York school foods are pretty good, even if the lot of them are fatty stuff like burgers, pizza, tatertots, meatpies and stuff.

I bring my own food to school though. American style in a bag and not bento. Though I did use a LOT of home made bento boxes when I was young. Ate homecooked meals daily.

The food in schools in France was simply horrible, especially for the in my youngest years.

Between radishes with butter, pomelos that give you a nice citrus juice attack to the eyes, brussel sprouts (I am still traumatized from them to this very day) and lentils with a remaining bit of soil... Even spinach was meh.
There even was some kinda tartar steak... Good to get some random bacteria. Hey, it's kids we are talking about. Their immune system is not fully competent yet. And still they feed them with crap.

"Meals made with the supervision of dieteticians" my a**. Rather chosen to cut costs.

Hopefully, I'm still fond of lentils and spinach to this very day.

@seth frostheart: Incoming proteins!! lol... Well I guess I was lucky enough with my lentils with a sprinkle of soil and brussel sprouts then.

Forget about Elementary kids, everyone in Japan is always hungry. Who can afford $38 grapes and $100 watermelons? When I was in Japan the only thing cheap enough to eat were the 10 for 100 yen eggs and the discounted bread at the end of the night. It's no wonder why instant noodles were invented. According to MGS3 it was made to help the hungry people. Maybe those school kids should bring their own instant noodles.

And it's not just the small portions of food. In the winter the kids are not allowed to wear jackets in the classroom, and the teachers don't turn on the heater until after the students leave. Reminds me the main character girl from Speed Grapher.

Hell people in prison get better meals than what they have at Sendai. This is a SCAM, we need to report this to the authorities, the MOE (Ministry of Education), the ACA (Anti-Corruption Agency), MIA (Ministry of Internal Affairs), and so on.
