I think this could be a Japanese only thing because when I do a search for "stamp rally" I see mostly Japan related results and images.

A Stamp Rally (スタンプラリー) is where one goes round to certain locations to stamp their book with rubber stamps. Each location would have a unique stamp.
While there are prizes to be won from stamp rallys, some people just collect these for fun.

This stamp is located at JR Meguro station.
Japan Stamp Rally (click to enlarge)
This is where the stamp is located and comes complete with a diagram of all the different stamps located at JR stations. Can I pull another if-this-was-hackney-london joke regarding the stamp going missing? OK never mind ^^;;;

Close up of some of the stamps. Here we see Ueno Station (many of you come into Ueno from Narita), Nippori (Taking the Skyliner from Nippori to Narita is the best option though as its cheap and the seats recline), Ikebukuro (for some reason a popular place to stay for gaijin visitors), Mejiro etc etc.

Stamps are not just about trains though and there was a recent Zero no Tsukaima stamp rally in Akihabara where the prize was a signed book. The catch was that even though you collected all the stamps, your name was just stuck in a draw.

I can see myself collecting these if they were moe or bishojo characters though ^^;

I've looked at this before and thought maybe someday... ^^;

That would be interesting thing to start, moe and/or bishojo stamps. Tie it in with a website and get the shops in Akiba to participate. The website might generate hits for otaku sites and sales for shops.

For a chance to win some thing, I would get it if I pass by, but not going to every station to collect them all.
Isn't it gonna cost lost of money to go to every station ?

I want the Zero no Tsukaima one for sure XD

Cool, if I had known about these, I would've started on my previous 2 trips ;p I would not have known what it was for if I saw it before. But I don't recall seeing them. But I'll look out for them next year :)

I did get a red stamp at the top of Himeji Castle this year though :) It's a nice souvenir showing you've been there :)

I do have friends who collect these stamps indeed. While I do not share their enthusiasm the wood cut design used for the stamp is exquisitely carved and is a veritable work of art.

I don't know there are stamps inside train station. I've only discovered that at the end of my journey in Japan, at the top of the Himeji castle :
http://www.himeji-castle.gr.jp/
An old woman gave me her paper (forgot ours) so that I was able to stamp and take it back. For me it's also like a evidence which means "Hey, I was here!" ^_^

I like this idea a lot, having to go to all the different stations to complete the journey. I guess it helps that I enjoy riding the train.

Those stamps look really good. I'd definitely try to get all those when I go to Japan. It's as good as a sign that you've been to all those places.

ei Danny, why don't you make a stamp of your own? XD

We found out about these before we went to Japan so we took a small pad and collected them everywhere we went - hotels, museums, theme parks, and stations of course.
When you get back it makes a nice souvenir, or (because you will have taken a squillion photos) you can remove the pages and put them in your photo album with the appropriate photos.

we have similiar stamps here in Poland - maybe not on every train/metro station (don't have many metro stations either:), but on major turist attractions. when we were in Japan with my girlfriend (who told me about this great blog:), I think that we got the best stamp in Ghibli Museum - full of Totoros. it's my first comment here on dannychoo.com - so, welcome everybody:).

Interesting, didn't realise there was a greater following involving stamps besides the ones used for signatures (I think it's called).
