Last Thursday Sony Japan launched their YouTube like service called eyeVio and they invited me go attend the launch party. I thought to myself "oh crap!" as all my normal civilian clothing was in the wash and had nothing to wear. Reluctantly, I decided to go in the only thing that I had available...
Went along with Hector from Kirainet and you can also read his coverage here.

I attend a few web related launch events but never seen a venue so packed.

As usual, got to meet and network with many in the internet industry and discovered some new business opportunities ^^

Comrade gaijin DJ - perfect Japanese speaker who whipped the crowd into a frenzy with her cool tunes.

Sony were giving out a ton of their new iPod Nano sized walkman player - this one plays videos too though. Hector and I just happened to get one each ^^;

The girls from Red Bull flogging their drink to the crowds. Its actually quite nice (the drink I mean (well the girls were nice too)).

One the way home, Sony had even more goodies to give away in the form of promo stuff and a USB memory stick.

Folks like to take a picture with the blaster and I end up holding it for them.

A camera crew went around the venue shooting people - whoever showed up on the large screen got a walkman ^^;

The lady from Red Bull also gets a Walkman.

The eyeVio service supports mp4/m4v/mpeg/mpg/flv/3gp/3g2/wmv/avi/mov/qt/vob/rm and you can upload upto 150MB per clip. There are also many features that allow you to easily port to your Sony devices such as PSP etc.

My free goodies! If you are a Mac user, you need to plug the NW-A805 into a windows machine once to wake it up - dont bother to install any software. Once thats done you will be able to plug it into a mac and copy mp4 files to the VIDEO folder. You can see Zero no Tsukaima playing in the pic. My wife is going to use it for video only as I think you need to use the Windows software that came with it to transfer music to the unit and we cant be bothered with that.

This leaves me with a related question about online video services - how long do you reckon you spend watching video clips every week? Personally I mainly watch whats added to the Otavids section.

Nice event you went to. Try pointing your blaster at the goodies distributer to get more :p

Btw, is the flashdrive the dongle that's beside the eyeVio player in the last picture?

Hi Danny nice pics of the walkman. Highly doubt sony can crack the iPod market for music but its a nice player for videos ^^ Sucks it does not work fully for macs (Music wise). Glad I still have my VAIO around if I still want to get one. Cause was thinking of switching to Macs in the future.

I'm not sure how sony will handle all those copyright stuff on eyeVio once ppl start uploading them? Is eyeVio just for Japan or do they intend to extend the service to have other languages?

I guess u have to also thank members that link videos on your site so u dun have to go around searching for new stuff to see. The Otavids section has been great ^_^

Oooh, Free stuff ^_^ always a good thing xP

I shall have to check out this new video service, maybe it will be another location to find anime ^_^

As for the sony walkman thing, it looks quite nicae actually, and in the pic it looked like it had quite a big screen.

With all those anime to watch, I have no time remaining to browse video clips ;)
Sometimes I look at those funny Haruhi Cosplay dances and things like these, but that's all about internet video clips.

Nice coverage! Too bad a Windows software's needed to transfer music :/

NW-A805 appear sugoi! I have a SE M600i Smartphone-Keitai. Spec. of this NW-A805 appear to be similiar to mine keitai for screen and internal CPU. In this case I'm sure will be a wonderful audio/video player. Good job Sony!

:O The mp3 looks nice, but i hate how sony walkmans requires you to convert your files with this program before you can play it or have they gotten rid of that? Can you just drag and drop now like the psp and walkman phones?

Sony and Red Bull sponsored by the Empire? Eh?

You're very lucky, getting those high-tech freebies just like that and I know they will be put in good use.

Wonder where the rest of the armor went in the third picture.

Oh yes, and a final question, do you keep a pack of business cards (of yourself) in your pocket to hand them in in the most appropriate situations? This question would seem to come out of nowhere but the answer could be useful.

Glad to see the ol' Stormtrooper set getting some use. :)

eyeVio seems like an interesting site. Certainly aspects of the design feel a little clunky, and the front page is nothing to shout about, but the embedded video interface is intuitive and works well.
(ID #55541) Posted on 2007/08/27 02:52
Looking at eyevio's Alexa stats, it doesn't seem to be doing so great. Is there an Alexa equivalent for Japanese sites that has more accurate data?

well, i checked out their web site and it looks interesting, a lot of things going on in one page which is very Japaneses in regard to web design. However its all Japaneses :( I assume they will have English option soon or it won't be successful at all. Well, if they want it to rival youtube then defiantly they need English option.

I don't see this getting popular unless Youtube stops all the Japanese guys from uploading TV shows, gravure idol dvds, and what not. If that happens, I see someone coming along and making another Youtube anyway. Sony is just late to the party once again.

And what the hell is an eyeVio? Is that based off the Sony Vio, Sony's horrible lap top? They should just shut down everything else they are doing and focus on Playstation.

Since downloading anime is illegal (especially in Singapore), online video services are my only mean to watch my dose. So it is much more than 1 hour/day.

More online video services are always good for me, since direct downloads links that don't enforce Megaupload-like rules are rare and... well, torrenting is too risky in my country.
