Took me a while to get around to this series as it didnt seem to have any large mecha walking around in it ^^;
When I first learnt about Nodame (pronounced no-dah-meh) I thought "hmmm. looks boring" but then remembered that was exactly the same thing I said to myself when I saw the ads for the film Phantom of the Opera. We went to see the live show at Her Majesty's Theatre back in London and loved it and enjoyed the film even more.
I say it to myself all the time but need to remind myself - "you never know until you try."

Nodame Cantabile revolves around Shinichi Chiaki who is a brilliant pianist who wants to become a conductor. When he was a young lad, he was in a plane *and* boat accident so is understandably scared of traveling - meaning that he's stuck in Japan - which also means that he cant go abroad to realize his dreams.
Chiaki meets a girl called Nodame ( the girl in the first pic of this post ) who is also a brilliant pianist who lives next to Chiaki. Nodame cant cook or tidy up and is rather messy - Chiaki ends up cleaning and cooking for her - its all rather sweet ^^;
Throughout the episodes we see how Chiaki and Nodame meet other characters and how they become involved with the S orchestra.

I think this is the only anime that has us in fits of laughter every episode (laughing is said to be medically good for one). I'm trying to pinpoint the type of person who would like this but cant - even mecha, more and bishojo lovers should give this a whirl.
Watching Nodame makes me wish that I could play an instrument - I'd probably choose the Piano.

For folks who are Nodame fans, you may be interested in the NDS game which came out a few days ago and the live action drama too.
My wife occasionally gets sets of manga that shes fond of from our local library and sought to ask about the availability of the original manga of Nodame Cantabile only to be told that there were 462 people already waiting!

LOL Danny, I thought the same thing about both Yakitate Japan and Nodame Cantabile, and I now love both. Nodame Cantabile is both hilarious and sweet. My first experience was the live-action drama of Nodame Cantabile, and although it was a bit short (11 episodes at 1 hour each), I enjoyed every minute of it. When they announced that there was going to be an anime, I was jumping for joy. Now I just need to start reading the manga to get the complete experience.

I loved the live-action of Nodame and the anime. So far, I prefer the actor from the live-action as Chiaki - he has the right tone of voice for Chiaki. But the anime is one of my current favorites.

Danny, have you seen Sexy Voice and Robo? The first episode was promising

Yes, from time to time I string a guitar. I am currently looking into purchasing a pair of bagpipes and taking lessons (because I hear they are almost impossible to play). As for the anime, it really doesn't look like my cup of tea. Mecha, Mecha, Mecha!!

I was thinking about watching this anime, but like you I though it looked boring. I will give it a try at least, although I'm busy watching a bunch of new anime for the spring season so I will get around to it.

I like how Stresseman is portrayed in the anime more than how he is portrayed in the live-action. He's supposed to be a lecherous european, but in the live-action he just looked like a dirty Japanese guy speaking funny Japanese. Still funny, but loses a bit of the effect. His manager Elise in the live-action, however, was pretty dang hot. Nodame's live-action actress was cute as well. Chiaki in the live-action was awesome though. That dood was like perfect for the role.

Oooh, this looks pretty interesting, and i think my friend has watched/is watching the live action drama.

It seems that alot of these new anime's use the same animation style, which is a good thing ^_^

*sigh* but this will have to go on the waiting list of anime's to watch, because my exams are in 4 weeks!!! >.

Nodame Cantabile is a really great show. I love Megumi's "gyabo" and others "mukyaa" (which inspired me for my domain name haha), and I am a huge fan of her seiyuu Ayako Kawasumi as well.
And it's a real pleasure to listen to classic music through this fresh comedy . I used to be trombonist in a orchestra, that reminds me some great memories hehe.

"i dont like the character design, they look to[o]..... human"

Yeah, I prefer my characters to look like, erm pedophillic space aliens... [/sarcasm]

That has to be one of the strangest criticisms I have read of an anime.

There are plenty of series with this level of "realism" Which is still, actually, VERY stylised.

If I was going to criticise some character designs that are trying to be realistic, like for instance Moonlight Mile, it would be because it looked like someone barfed them up all over the nice CGI work.

Not so with Nodame Cantible, which is still very attractive.

It took me six months of piano lessons to realise I had neither the talent, nor interest to play the piano.

...and I will probably inflict the same punishment on my kids, in attempt to live my dreams through them. (like every bad parent ^_^ muahahaha).

btw I corrected the spelling in the Anime I am currently watching field, from my last post. It now reads "Seirei no Moribito" which I suppose is the correct Romanji spelling. And It should also be "Tokyo Majin Gakuen Kenpuchou".

Danny, we need more space there for the shows with the silly long names!

Hi!

I actually watched the live drama. And I highly recommend it. It's a good stress reliever for sure. If you need a break watch!

I actually heard of it before i heard about the anime after some googling. I wanted to watch the series, but I am actually surprised to see this here! (it does look odd amongst everything else imho hehehe).

Not sure how good the anime is but if it's anything similar to the dorama I am not surprised that it has the power touch the hearts of people who otherwise would not normally see it! it even inspires people to go out to learn an instrument! how great is that! Music is beautiful.

Cheers,
Jiro

Perhaps thats a future topic for you Danny.

Live Action vs Anime.

(maybe you already have, too lazy to check archive...)

Is there a fansub group for J-Drama? I've seen some fansubbed live action. Death Note, NANA and some power ranger type shows.

The anime is light hearted and funny, defintely high on my list. However I couln't even sit through the 1st episode of the live actio drama version. Anime characters' mannerism is just too much in real iive.

You should definitely watch the live action danny. I myself prefer the live action compared to the anime. Even the characters are so anime-ish :D

When I first watched it, I immediately got hooked to it. One of the only live action series I've ever watched from start to finish. Mostly due to the great cast that portrayed the characters. ^^

Yep, Nodame Cantabile is great ! Too short though. I hope there will be a second season (just like I hope he same about beck).
Since then, I search every CD shop for a Rachmaninov piano concerto #2 played the way Chiaki did. I love the emotion of his music.
Anybody knows if there is Soundtrack of this anime ?

Danny, you watch the live TV show also right ? Before or after the anime ? Which one is better ? Is it the same music pieces ?

the first time I know of this series is from the Manga. From the very first volume, it already feels like a very good and solid series.

The anime is the only form I haven't watch. Watched the '3D' version, which is rather cool (even my mom enjoy it), including the Nodame Special (the one in europe)

I'm a large fan of Nodame. You've mentioned that in every episode you had brief moments of rapid successions of laughter. Did you not have a similar experiences when watching Haruhi for each episode? C'mon, be honest mister.

The anime is great. The seiyuu for Nodame (Ayako Kawasumi) and Chiaki (Tomokazu Seki ) were spot on.

The drama is even better. The actress for Nodame (Ueno Juri) and the actor for Chiaki (Tamaki Hiroshi) were absolutely brilliant with a 'capital T.' The music was superb as in the anime.

However the manga reigns supreme for being the best out of the three. Hehe. I can understand the difficulty in acquiring a new tankoban when it is released. The popularity is still strong as is the current developments in the manga.

I'm glad you came around Danny, I love Nodame Cantabile (and I have all the manga xD). Other than the manga I prefer the anime over the drama because I am not a big anime-based-drama fan unless it's actually dramatic...I find the humor better suited to animation.
