Akihabara Shopping

My first memories of Japan were sunny afternoons walking around in Akihabara drinking some Calpis water while shopping for hardware - just like yesterday.
A display for the eroge ToHeart2 Another Days left over from a few nights ago.
The game went on sale at midnight and there were a load of eager otaku lining up in the cold.

The CGs for this game are quite nice ^^;
Idol Master L4U Live for you goes on sale. Trailer below. Namco-san > please release on PS3!
Get this PS3 and DMC4 bundle and get 20,000 yen off when you apply for a Flets optic fiber internet connection.

Was playing DMC4 last night - am currently just starting to use Dante. Still prefer Nero. Catch me online with my PS3 id = dannychoodotcom. Below is just a taster of some of the action.
A load of figures up for pre-order.
A load of eroge up for pre-order.
A load of folk stare at the screen of the new Street Fighter being played upstairs.
Apart from all the otaku stuff, Akiba is a great place to go looking for PC parts, hardware etc. I originally started out my otaku career as a Pasokon Otaku.

Was out looking for some memory - this shop near At Home Cafe has the cheapest hard disks.
How about some Oden in a can? Oden is a mix of warm vegetables and other Japanese food items.
Yes they sell kit kat in cans too.
Folk looking up the price of hard disks and memory.
No littering, No walking-smoking, no stub littering. No.
The eva girls.
About 3PM. Akiba is a great place to be on a Sunday afternoon.
Something going on in the middle here outside Toranoana - photos tomorrow + ^^;
How about some Milf?
At the electrical department store Yodobashi Camera. You could probably spend all day in here - I think thats what Yodobashi wanted. They want you to spend time in the store rather than trek about Akihabara. The arrival of Yodobashi has indirectly cause many small shops to close down.
At the Mac corner. When in the Apple store, me usually set the screen to dannychoo.com and watch how people browse the site when they first see it - most click on "idols" in the header ^^;

Alas, the Macs at Yodobashi had filters so no userbility studies for me ^^;
A photo printing machine.
Stick in your memory cards, attach USB drives etc and print your idol photos. Stick in parts of your body in the machine and nothing will happen.
And this is what I brought back with me. Some ultra thin 1000 Base-tx LAN cables.
50 Mitsubishi DVD-R's for 1,468 yen - seems pretty cheap to me. I remember the time when *ONE* of these cost the same ^^;
Cheap in your region too?
An SATA 200GB 7200RPM drive at 18,400 yen for the MacBook. Forgot to buy an adapter that lets me copy from the MBP to an external 2.5" SATA drive. Going back Wednesday to Akiba for a GoodSmile figure event - will pick up that adapter when I'm there again.

The girl in this leaflet is Rui Kiriyama who you saw in yesterdays article - she was handing them out. Japan the only place where young girls hand out leaflets with pictures of themselves showing their nice eyes on them?
Two sticks of 2GB memory for the MacBook Pro. Was using 2GB up until now but running Windows on the machine at the same time was a bit slow. Parallels enables one to run OSX and Windows at the same time. I run Windows to do QA on IE6/7 and Firefox.

Never used a machine with more than 2GB before ^^;

How much memory do you have in your machine and what do you use your machine mainly for? Is your memory enough for what you need to do?
I'm mainly programming and use the odd graphic package now and then.

I recently got a 3Gzh Athlon X2 with 2 gigs of Ram and a Geforce 8600 Videocard. And the most demanding game I've got is StarCraft: Broodwar Expansion :P But it does cut render times down by half compared to my other machine, which I plan to upgrade when my budget allows.

To Chong Mizunaga, cheaper DVD's in Malaysia? Are we talking of original DVD's or "casual copies"? :) Casual copies are pretty cheap here, something like US$1.50 each. Original DVD's cost pretty much the same as elsewhere in the world I guess.

Currently my desktop is using 2GB ram, upgraded it from 1GB in order to play Hellgate: London; before was for World of Warcraft but have since quitted. However now my desktop is mainly for surfing, downloading and watching anime, maybe the occasional eroge (Still on TH2AD).

Should be getting a new laptop in about 4 months time when I enter University, and it's main role would be for using engineering product design softwares like AutoCAD, Pro.Engineer and SolidWorks etc. Since it'll be high 3D graphics workload, would most likely need 4GB ram or more I guess. I just love designing/inventing new things from scratch ^^.

50 Mitsubishi DVD-R for less than 1500円!?
let's count Indonesian price, one piece is Rp. 5000 including discount so 50 pieces would be Rp. 250,000 <- approx. 3125円
Price difference has left me in despair

To Nightshade, Chong Mizunaga was probably thinking about blank DVD's. I buy my usual 30-pack of Sony DVD+R's for an equivalent of 1,330 yen, so it's more expensive than in Japan but on the other hand I buy 1-16x compatible when Danny's Mitsubishi are 1-8x only (probably some old stock lying in a depths of Akiba warehouses :) ).

Two gigs for day to day stuff on my main machines (Intel iMac, AMD64, MacBook Pro), but I really feel the constraints when I run my VMs or run Adobe CS products. I really need four gigs at those times, but usually two gigs gets me by.

512 megabytes in my workstation at home, but all I use it for is web surfing and watching standard definition video. Even then I occasionally pine for more.

My Linux webserver usually gets by fine with 256 megabytes. My first server only had 24 megs, and for long after I got by on 32 megs! Simpler times.

The new Mac Pro at the office has eight gigs for crunching numbers and running virtual machines, but I let the new network admin adopt it away from me to do his number crunching.

Danny, do you have an opinion on VMWare versus Parallels, or have you not investigated? I need Windows for development and doing web QA in IE6+, but I've only ever used VMWare. VMWare Fusion works beautifully, but I've never used Parallels.

5% 16+Gb? WTF is that?

Ahhh, these pics makes me nostalgic.. even though I've been on Japan less than 2 years ago, but still.

How happy would I be being able to spend my sunday afternoons on akiba...

Cheap-o DVDs indeed. In Brazil you pay twice as that...

The only good part of me not being able to go to Akiba on weekends is that, I'd probably loose control of my accounts, and end up having a huge problem with $okane$.

You see... I'm planning on buying a nice amateur HDD camera right now. But still didn't buy it because it's way too expensive in Brazil, and I can get cheaper when I get back to my hometown, a month from now aprox.

If I lived in Japan, I'd probably already bought it, realised I almost won't use it, put it on the back of some drawer, and finally proceeding to the next useless gadget on my list. :P

I still can't see me buying a mac =/, seems to be the same thing as windows with prettier things and less compatibility to me.

Also, dvd-rs are about the same price here, same as the HDs and memory. I usually use newegg.com when I buy comp parts, they're based here in Cali.

I have a 6-year old P4 that uses 768MB of ram. It's rather weak but motherboard is old so no use upgrading with newer memory. I want to upgrade my machine all together so I get faster performance.

DVDR is pretty cheap nowadays. I do remember the days they used to be expensive and I went to computer convention with vendors that would sell them in bulk for cheap.

I remember my first day in Akihabara, it was Sunday too. My kohai from high school in USA took me to Akihabara and it was the greatest thing ever. Since I was with him, I could not go full shopping mode so I just looked around and dig thru 100yen doujinshi bin in Tora no Ana store. Then next day on, full shopping mode on +_+

I have 6GB(1GBx6) in my machine which I use for some hardcore gaming and multitasking to the extreme. As of now, both of my laptops use 2GB and they work out just fine.
DVD-Rs in America are decently priced, 50 runs for about 20USD. I have a stack of 25, but I don't tend to use them often unless I'm burning up some movies, etc.
Man, I wished I lived in Japan! It seems like such a cool place, I've always been dreaming on living in Japan since about middle school. Now, it seems out of my reach, but I'll make it work somehow. =D

Yes, 64bit is the way to go...there's just not that much support for it out there though which is why most of the time I get stuck with 32bit OSs. I have 1.5GB in my laptop and 2GB in my pc. I use a mainly XP and other XP/Linux VMs for testing/QA. I spend most of my time browsing this site, engadget, email and programming. ^^ I wish dvdrs around here were as cheap as the one you bought danny. Ours cost a bit more.

siulay, as far as I know, memory depends on your processor (not windows) If your processor is an IA-32 (32 bits in your adress buffer), your max memory can be 2^32 = 4 gb (not 3 :P), im not sure If IA-64 can be found yet (not at my country) wich can give you 2^64 = 16 exab. Well, at least thats what they teach us in my country (telecommunications last year, but hell ya, maybe Im wrong about it)

I have 2gb on my laptop and home pc. ironically my office computer runs on 512k. ^^; was thinking of upgrading it, but since I just run visual Foxpro programs, microsoft word and excel on it, thought I wouldn't need that much ram on it anyway. ^^

Unfortunately, I traded a friend my old monitor for a Gig of memory, but it doesn't fit in my motherboard :(

Calpis? Love the stuff. I think it's one of the few things I like that I can find at the Asian Markets here.

i'm using 4GB PC2-5300 DDR2 RAM. computer comes with 2GB but bought another 2GB since they are so cheap.

but my 32 bit windows vista only display 3326MG under my computer. called up Dell helpdesk and found that vista will not display full 4GB but reassured me it the CPU is running on 4GB. o really? :-/

both my laptop and my machine at home has a 1GB of RAM and i can't find a single retailer here that carries a stick of RAM with more than 2GB of memory ^^;;;;;

blank DVDs here are cheap and it costs at the most around Php9.00 each (and that's around 23 yen each) ^^
