I honesly like the skirts, i would hae loved to have had a cute uniform like that during school, deciding what to where every day can be a hassle, and when you get made fun off for not following the latest trends is a horrible feeling. If everyone had the same uniform i'd love it! plus if it were as cute as that i'd love it more!
I'm quite particular about what I wear as well, and while I usually hate the idea of having to wear something other than what I've chosen myself, at the same time I recall not feeling at all bothered by having to wear a silly bright-colored gown at my graduation ceremony, precisely because everyone had to wear them. As one often picked on in my younger days, I almost wish I had had a uniform in high school and earlier, just as Dancing Queen said. Perhaps the skirts in the snow are a bit much, though? Then again, Gundams never seem to get cold in space, which must be even chillier.
Over here, it's either hot, or rainy, so I'd say skirts all-round. I rarely see people wear such short skirts though. orz Maybe I just don't get out enough. Need to go to shopping malls! (for girls)
Is the skirt length in the picture the compulsory length in Japan? That's really short >_< Not that's necessarily a bad thing. I like it actually ^^ For cultural comparison, in here, school girls have to wear skirt too but usually girls won't wear the skirt at that kind of length.. Some do wear the skirt at that kind of length though and they usually are some of the cutest girls in the school..
Benjamin Takeyo, I've never seen longer than that so I presume that its the standard.
I rather let it be worn only during the warm seasons, but in my imaginary world, its pantsu all the time :D
Well, what warm blooded hetrosexual male doesn't admire the leggy display of skin the short skirt has to offer? We're basically biologically coded to look and wonder what's under the hood. From what I hear though, schoolgirls in Japan tend to take standard length skirts and either hemm them shorter or roll them up at the waist to make them appear so. They know very well what's goin on, so who am I to object. I don't...
I can't accept Pantsu only....then there's nothing to wonder about @_@;
@Aya Kyunik Really? Don't you wonder what's beyond the pantsu..? I know I do.. ^^ Sorry for being kinda pervy here >_< @Danny You might be right! And if I may take example from Minami-ke, Haruka's friend, Maki, complained that they are forced to wear mini skirt (episode 2 at 3:37). That make it seems like mini skirt is the (enforced??) standard there ^^
girls in school here can only wears skirts exceeding knee-length, as proposed by the ministry. very sad sight. why does the typical japanese school girl uniform has such short skirts? not to mention they look great too! malaysian school uniform looks like fashion back in the forties...
i'd make miniskirts mandatory and must be worn all year round ^____^ i really love japanese school uniforms and it makes girls so moe -- 3D or 2D ^____^
Danny: Mobile suits only have skirts because non-vertical tanks (y'know the tracked kind) have 'em. Tanks have 'armored skirts' over the sides of their roadwheels to help protect the delicate bits that make it move. Kinda like a girl's skirt, only the only thing those are protecting against are deadly eye beams.
I was also wondering why all the school girls were wearing skirts during cold winter, so they have strict dress code -_- I do feel for them so maybe during the winter, they can wear pantsu under their skirts perhaps.
oooh yes "shake shake"
Wow, that's a beautiful pic (when she is coming off the bus). Well, I reckon at least they should modify the dress code for winter, I mean it's cold and such. But mandatory to wear skirt during warmer times ^^.
Actually Danny, the correct term for the "skirts" on the Gundams, and most waist-level armor, is "tasset". And I too love them short uniform skirts. They are pretty much non-existent in Portugal... About the cold, I guess the girls should just wear some kind of stockings under the skirt...
Skirts - Approved for all year round usage!! I hardly see girls here (SG) who wear skirts (Jeans material skirts are not skirts to me!), and don't even get started on the mini-skirt, hardly/doesn't exist. Even the school uniforms for girls, the length are just below the knee level. Even without the school ruling of the uniform's skirt length, I still see lots of other girls wearing skirts of that length while in Japan for casual wear. It's like natural to them I guess.
well, wonder how they withstand the cold ~.~ anyway, today at roppongi, was walking back after lunch. me and my collegue was walking behind a lady, a sudden gust of strong wind blew up her short skirt!! free view of red pantsu me and my colleague were trying to hide our laughter ;P
@benjamin takeyo-san go to SMA sekolah negeri, that's our skirt standard.... its a very long skirt, girl look like a yakuza-ish girl with it
@takeyo-san go to SMA negeri, now that's our skirt standard
You find some girls wearing short skirts to school here, but its not cumpulsory so maby they just like all the attention :p. As for the history of the skirt, i don't think you could really find the inventor ( to thank them of course :D )as they have been around for thousands of years....
I would prefer all-year long skirt.(cover knees) I am fascinated by long skirt. ^_^ (may be because it is being worn here.) But if it's a short skirt like Japan, I think they should allow girls to wear other things in cold weather like that...
haahh when we got excahnge students from japan all the guys would be like crawling on the stairs to try and peep at their skirts.. even more funny when they have lunch on the grass its pantsu flashs!
@Akiba-kid Do you mean to say that they don't have to wear pantsu during warmer seasons? ^^ @Pyramid Head That's in Jakarta? Too far, pass (that's like 900 km away) ^^
They should wear over knee socks. :3
I wish there was a higher res picture of that girl getting off the bus- that's a really good shot and I would have loved to have it as a my wallpaper.
at first I was going to say, "that's wrong; she looks cold." But then I realized... this is a gift. we should just appreciate that we can see this sort of thing. she suffers for us all and we thank her for that.
I am not 100% sure but, I do not think the skirts, being short, is compulsory at all, but quite the opposite (i.e. they are longer, but the girls do not like them that way) Skirts of younger girls are usually below the knee, it's only when they get 15 or so that it magically "shrinks". They are still longer than you can see in the streets, girls just fold them over and over to shorten them. I asked a friend (Japanese, girl) how come they are not even wearing panties when it is cold or something. According to her, girls are not allowed to wear colored ones (which includes black), and skin-tone ones are perceived to be a thing of old ladies.
i believe the main reason for skirts is to make sure girls sit graciously instead of with their legs wide apart. correct me if i'm wrong. ('~')
they dont feel cold? Weather like + short skirt ...
that's why we have thermal underwear... so the uber kawaii Japanese School Girls can continue wearing those skirts
I think it's because girls look good in skirts. But then the question is if we were brought up with blank slates, would fashion designers re-invent skirts for girls? Girls should have warmer long skirts, stockings or pants to go under the skirt or warm long socks in winter. But it seems that girls survive in Japan every winter so maybe the way it is now is ok.
Damn that is dedication or the rules I know her shiny smooth legs have to be cold.
Damn ... it must have been freezing ! i would have died if it was me ... i don't mind helping those girls wear something warmer
omg. =S i wanna live in japan! BTW Danny, just wondering how did you manage to capture those pictures of a school girl? XD
Woah. omg sweet sweet! i wana go Japan!! Btw Danny, im just wondering how did you managa to capture those pictures of the girl? XD
I wouldn't say it's so much a matter of "Who invented the skirt?" but "Who decided that men should wear pants and women shouldn't?" As most have said, girls tend to fold/hitch their skirts up, but some school skirts are getting shorter of their own accord. It's one thing when the girls are deciding to do it (not that I award points for lasciviousness--major fail in my book), but I imagine some men are making these decisions. What do the people around them say/think, I wonder?
Skirts all year round, since the schools that allow girls to wear trousers here dont make them wear a certain type like they do with the boys. So the girls will all be wearing all different styles and the boys have to wear one style. Also i like them.
I thought they just wore long stockings when it was cold?
Seasonal skirts... longer for the winter, and mildly insulated. You want them cold enough that they would ask you to come over and warm them up, but not too cold that they become frigid. ^^

@choo
i don't think these photos are taken by danny. i don't see the dannychoo.com mark on the photos. ('~')
Skirts were designed for to keep really hot females comfortably cool. I keeping the head and upper body warm is more important than the lower body cause that is where all your vital organs are. Just don't get frostburn and you will probably be alright.
lol some how the bus looks like a one from TTC toronto here.... and it's been slowing a crap-load around these days too.. But only if we have public schools with uniform rules...
thank you god for inventing skirts...*sheds a tear*
Men in Scotland wear kilts, not skirts! And usually only on special occassions such as weddings, graduations and the national team losing a football match.
That look's cute, but isn't the rule very strict? It's winter + It's so damn cold. Anyway, aren't there anybody, especially girls that complain about it at Japan?
This is exactly why I can't move to Japan. I just wouldn't know when I would snap. A guy can only take so much. I say yes to small skirts.
Well the schoolgirl in this picture could be wearing sheer tights which would help keep her warm, also aren't schoolgirls allowed to wear like navy/white stockings? either full leg or thigh highs? In Ireland, girls can wear trousers, they don't usually though, but the skirts are knee high so a lot warmer XD
I think there are not enough girls wearing skirts! Thats such a lovely piece of clothing! The Image is just stunning, she looks like an angel!
Man, before these pics, I thought the short skirts were a myth perpetuated by fanservice in anime... You learn something new (with this site)everyday. Er, no complaints from the ladies about their clothes?
PANZU ONLY !
Yeah my vote was for pantsu only... but that girl in the pic aboveis fine...she's got some uggz on! lol. also stuff like this in canada happens all the time! though most girls here wear pants...but yeah u do see the occasional skirt here or there
That's cute. Nice to see. ^^ I also noticed the words on her bag. "shake shake". Amusing. And don, it's frostbite, not frostburn. ^^
I'm tempted to say that a kilt is not a skirt, but I like the idea that the Scots share some connection with Gundam. As much as it pains me to do so, I had to vote for skirts optional. I like the uniform, I don't think I'd like to be the young girl wearing it when a gang of otaku walk past.
SKIRTS! well.....that schoolgil sure looks like an anime character & to see 'em wearing a skirt during that season of the year i'd get warmer just from watching 'em walk damn even JUMP! ^^ @DBLADE: i also noticed the SHAKE SHAKE bag! hehe
keep the skirts on, if it were pantsu only it would take the thrill outta the "hunt". By the way, I wouldn't call them skirts if I were to point it out on someone wearing a kilt. Some Scots actually take offense when you call it that. Happened to me before during a parade and boy was I embarassed.
Japan people will endure to make you happy =D.
oh I feel SO bad for that girl. when I was an exchange student in Japan I went to a preppy private high school and they were SUPER strict about the dress codes. I froze my @$$ off during winter because all I had was the skirt, mini biker shorts and socks (not even tall ones because the mandatory school socks only go halfway up the calf). I got in BIG trouble the one day I tried to wear my school gym pants under my skirt during the 40min commute to school (biking, walking, train, bus, walking, etc). One of my teachers made me de-pants myself in the hallway *so embarrassed then* so I say yes to cute skirts- but at least allow tights or pants of some kind UNDERNEATH! :/
The Skirt is VERY cute but I feel bad for her. Some type of leggins should be allowed!
Well, for me is skirts all year! But I dunno... when I went to Japan, it was like freezing. Wasn't snowing, but I notice that lots of girls would still use skirts... not only from school uniforms.
I for one love girls in skirts, but I hate seeing a girl suffer. So if I could make some changes then I'd make skirts optional, especially when its cold.
I love living in Japan .... sites like this make it all worth while.
No bloomers for the poll? If I had to choose... Skirts all- yaer round! I'll be there to warm things up if they get cold! And LOL @ Afroshin Now we know, it's a kilt Danny, not a skirt!
Don't feel sorry for the girls. My wife is from Korea and she wears skirts all the time during winter and when you ask her if her legs are cold, she looks at you like you're crazy and says NO. They grew up in this and it doesn't even phase them. Just like people in Fairbanks Alaska start walking around in shorts because the weather got up to an unbearable high of 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
First, all skirts all the time. Second, don't feel sorry for the girls.
I think skirts have been around for a long time, ancient Egyptians wore long skirts, ancient Roman soldiers wore short skirt armor. (thank goodness I didn't interchange shirt and skirt this time, like I did on the last comment). ^^ Poor school girls, sure wish I was there to keep those poor cold pair of legs warm. o(^^o)(o^^)o
awwwwww she is having fun, but that is not right if its required to wear them all time is just cruel. Even unhealthy, :-( but I guess man in board of education enjoy it hehhe ^_^
bandit35, she's the stoic type, eh? Typical of Asian culture (and I tend to be like that too at times)...
How cool is that. Just like you said, it screams anime. Too bad there is no clear pic of the face. :( other than that skirts all year round. It just looks so darn, dare I say it, cute or KAWII(i think)!!!
I wholeheartedly agree that short skirts on Japanese girls are really, really cute, and that year-round cuteness is an awesome idea. ^__^ But during the winter around here, most girls wear jeans, or at least leggings/tights if they do wear skirts or dresses. And they still constantly shiver and complain about the cold. I can't imagine how cold Japanese girls must get when they're not allowed to wear leggings or anything on account of the dress code. x__x I'm a girl, but never ever wear skirts. I find them very uncomfortable, believe it or not. ^^; Pants all the way for me! But that doesn't stop me from admiring other young ladies in miniskirts. XD
who came out with the rule to wear skirt in winter anyway? the japanese education minister has a skirt fetish or something? ('~')
anyway i feel sorry for the girl in the picture. she must be feeling cold. i'll great
