While it is generally not what the government supports, I don't really see the authorities doing anything about jaywalking. How far away are the Roppongi Hills from Tokyo, Danny?
"The Daily Adventures of Danny Choo". Sounds great to me, as life in Tokyo is one of the parts that interest me the most in your blog.
Ahhh, the daily life of Danny Choo. You have quite a busy life ^^.
hoya soysauce! This is so goddamn genious, im gonna need some guidelines for my first visit in japan in summer of 08' Btw, show off some secret hidden stuff that not all people know about in japan, like, a secret dungeon full of cheap manga/eroge/figures that nobody but us knows about! //A
Meh they "make" jaywalking illegal but I see students jaywalk all the time when I drive to school. Really annoying imo, I think there was only one incident where I saw someone get hit.
This "A Week in Tokyo" thing might prove to be interesting. I'm looking forward to the next one ^^
thanks for sharing all of this. i look forward to the next on the series, you seem to be a very nice guide for such in interesting city.
Thank you danny for your weekly "documentary" lol. looking forward for more from you.
what's a jaywalk anyway?
Great idea Danny, looking forward to seeing plenty of sights familiar to my travels each day.
nice idea. looking foward to more pictures of tokyo. and nice vader armour =P wheres the lightsaber?
its certainly a very interesting life you lead...
yea it's illegal. but everyone in nyc does it and the police don't care. its become an art.
"The sign is asking you not to jaywalk. Not enforced by law though. If one is caught by the police then they are likely to get just a warning. Whats it like in your region?" Punishment for jaywalking in the US is getting run over by a car. http://www.dannychoo.com/slide/eng/weektokyo/17185/photo/A+week+in+Tokyo/ wau awesome sunrays
LAWL, if my countrymen jaywalk we're more likely to be done in by road rage than an issued fine. Me wants more! That insight provided into what's it like to live in Tokyo is truly interesting.
My uncle told me this about jay-walking in NYC: "If the light's green, it means walk. If the light's red, it means run like hell."
@Dead Snake Jaywalking is crossing the street anywhere other then the crosswalks. Now interesting little fact in California jaywalking is only illegal if you are crossing the street between two controlled intersections. So you are fine if one of the intersections has no stop signs or traffic lights. Knowledge of this little fact prevented got a friend of mine out of a ticket.
10 pounds? Here(Melbourne, Australia) we cop $100AUD - $120AUD fine for any form of fare evasion.
Great weekly feature Danny. Since its been awhile since I was there things look familiar and new at the same time. Good show. As for jaywalkin, it is illegal but generally ignored here by police. Unless it is spotted just at the right time causing possible obstruction or accident with traffic.
indo love jaywalking, most of ppl have too, even they didn't love it. stupid bus, motorcyle driver, and mikrolet making jaywalk really dangerous, they sometimes just pass through red light, so we have run like hell or go to hell
@AK-Kun: Roppongi Hills IS in Tokyo, unless you meant how far it is from Tokyo Station ^_^;; Keep posting these Danny! Even if we can't live in Japan/stay there long term, we can live it through you! LOL
Wah Wah Wah!!! Can't wait for the next "Tokyo Life of Danny Choo" edition to come out!!! Lol
I'm glad jaywalking isn't illegal here, since everyone does it (including me =P). But then again, we don't have that much crosswalks, so there's no way they could illegalize it.
Ah, another great feature from DannyChoo. And I con't wait to see that Vader suit in action. ;) AAs for your jaywalking question, its completely legal here in London on any roads with pavements. That is to say, you can't jaywalk across the motorway or major roads, mainly because you'll definetly get smacked by a car.
Great post Danny! It's interesting to see all the places you get to visit :) I think I saw that girl playing (the one in the first pic) while in Tokyo, but that was in Shinjuku, and I actually bought her cd xD well, if that's the same girl, her name was Ibuki Yui
I'm liking this new segment!
Take ME With YOU !
this "A Week in Tokyo" posts might prove interesting and i will be looking forward to it ^___^
It's a nice insight on how you pass your daily life in Japan. Definitely more interesting than mine. D:
Jaywalking is not illegal, only illegal if you cross the street with crosswalk is at least 50 meters away from you, if a cop catch you doing that than you have to pay a "toll" but besides that almost everyone does it here. It's more convenient to find a break in traffic than go find a crosswalk which may be hundreds of meters away from your current position
aww.. danny you have alot of meetings >.< It only applies to certain places, but usually, the folks here just jaywalk everywhere. If an accident happens, you might be able have the privilege to see a road dispute. well, they like to argue! I want to see more of Tokyo~
well, it sure sounds a lot better than my life.
@Soshi: I knew that. >.< And yes, that's what I meant. How far away from the station.
Had to look up what jaywalking was to be sure, but yea its not illegal here
cool! a new series, that will allow us to learn more about tokyo! THX!
i envy you danny, really, cheers mate!
in singapore, people jaywalk all the time. ('~')
In London now, people who go on the London Transport with Oyster cards get the minimum calculated fare taken out of the money deposited to the card. It has saved me some bother in figuring out what ticket I might have had to get to get to the other side of London or anything of the sort. And on Jaywalking, no one really looks up on it as I have seen.
great idea that "a week in tokyo" thanks a lot danny. what the hell is jaywalking??? :)
hey nice to see pictures of your uh, "dialy life". im visiting japan again next year and will try to stay there... for good lol.
Jaywalking is illegal within a 100-200 meters of a crossing, but i have never seen it enforced even when people do it infront of the police. But on another note wasnt the famous mafia guy al gapone caught jay walking and taking to the station and while he was there they raided his home?
What's Jaywalking?
you can cross where ever you want and at any time police chiefs here does not care much
same as below, here we can walk and wandering around with no bother from police, expect the have a raid and we must join the raid or turn back and run (if you want a different kind and new experience in your life) ^^ actually they insist us to join the raid no matter what --.

How I wish I was in Shibuya !
The crime rate is amazingly high in the US. Not safe anywhere it seems. Odd since we kill so many people and taser them like its going out of style.
I love this new addition to your site and will look forward to it every week
I see you got promoted into Darth Vader. Congratulations!! Nice costume too^^
This new post is a fantastic idea. I love all the pictures you take around Tokyo already, now we get even more! Thanks for the great idea.
Ah man! over here in mexico well in Juarez, people dont really care where they cross the street :-s :-D so no jaywalking rules over here its kinda wrong 'cause they usually get runned over :-s well tahts what U ghet for crossing the street like a dumba%$
nice, i like the band thing. i think its very nice to come out of metro and be greeted by nice music. It makes your morning so much more pleasing. We have this in Washington DC metro and the stop I get off for work always has someone playing. One guy plays this very nice chinese music (i think its chinese lol) and its so light and pleasing to hear hehehe
yeah it not legal in houstion they don't enforce it though mostly cuz they don't have to drivers don't stop for pedstrians and ped know it ped =pedstrians
jaywalking is "illegal" but then again i could jaywalk in front of the police station and they won't give a damn about it. as long as you don't get in a car accident jaywalking is ok over here.
