Thnx for the warning Danny. But most of the Japanese Mags here are gundam related. Since they are imports, I probably out never spend 20 CND on one
You'd be hard pressed to find Newtype magazine around here if you didn't know where to look. However you can find some back issues if you look really really hard. The only thing abundant that is japanese here are sushi restuarants.
I think you can find them here too but they are quite expensive... Though the previous issues of such magazines are sometimes on sale and at a lower price, so yea...
Anime magazines are way too expensive to be worth getting here in Australia, and Newtype USA was basically just an expensive catalogue of recently licensed anime in the US and completely irrelevant to the local scene. It was also filled with tidbits of info I already heard about ages ago. Blogs have made "scene" magazines obsolete. Magazines have to offer me high quality delicious images to earn my patronage. Also, if you don't want the magazine, can I have that Ink-chan foldout? :D
erm.. well my opinion is that animage have more gifts and double page CG.. and that's for animage only lol..
It's pretty easy to get common Japanese mags like newtype, dengenki hobby, hobby japan etc. All I buy is Visual kei and cosplay mags
i also prefer Newtype over Animage.... :/ and japanese magazines quite easy to find in Indonesia, especially in jakarta, because we have Kinokuniya chain here
I haven't seen any japanese mags around here, maybe one of the shops at the airports sell some but I'm not sure. Theres a german magazine about current mangas, animes and stuff, it's actually quite good so I buy it sometimes ^^
Yeah, there is Japan Centre in Piccadily Circus where I go for my monthly Shounen Jump, expensive ;_;. You can even book flights to Japan there and eat ramen. There is also a Japanese library in Acton near the children's Japanese School... did you go there Danny Choo?
We have a plentiful supply at the local outlets of Kinokuniya I guess. But yeap, it cost about 3 times as much too. (-.-!) I usually only buy Hobby Japan unless I got lucky with lottery that week. ∩゚∀゚∩アヒョ
Very hard to find good japanese anime/hobby mags, the only ones I've seen on sale were Hobby Japan, Dengeki Hobby and Shounen Jump. The prices are the same if I ordered them from HLJ, normally I get my mags from HLJ like Megami and Megami Deluxe, still need to get my hands in a Dengeki Hime ^^
Thanks to B&N we have a couple selections of Anime themed magazines here. Newytype(w/DVD) Otaku USA(w/DVD) Anime Insider Protoculture
the kinokuniya bookstore here has quite a variety of japanese magazines and idol pictorials. i used to go there to read Shounen Jump (actually it's more like look at the pictures since the words are in japanese. i later switched to reading manga online since i can get it translated and faster too.
Damn western culture for not being into anime & damn the European V.A.T system for overcharging me & Damn the H.M.S customs for charging their frigging import tax! once i start learning Japenese im defecting from British waters! shame I dont like karioke tho :( - the ultimate Japanese night out!!!
The Japanese Magazine i can is only from Kinokuniya Malaysia(i only know can get it from there), I saw this magazine in Kinokuniya Malaysia. But not all the magazine have :( ... The last picture, Shana, what that thing? A poster??
thanks for the tip. Japanese anime mags are hard to come by in my city, but we have loads of japanese fashion related mags. usually i'd stop over at kinokuniya KL to browse the mags while i'm at KL.
at least shana pencil board still look great :) thanks for the tip too
we have quite a number.. i thought animage was okay.. because of the cover page they had on nanoha. LOL. yeah. But the shana pencil board look alright though.. =P
i might buy just for the moetan poster =D
if I have to pay money for anime magazine, I will only pay for Newtype... at least base on my experience it's the best anime magazine out there...
I don't even have such magazines to choose from, ToT.
I have a kinokuniya close by... just over 1 hour away ;_; otherwise I'd be there at least once a week!
I'm so envy of you Danny. The anime magazine selection in my place is pathetic. The latest issue of Dengeki only comes two or three months later ToT
The only magazine around here would be Newtype, the rest are Shonen Jump etc. I wuld get Newtype, but its 12 or so dollars (if i can remember correctly) which puts me off. I usually go to the store to get manga, so 12 for a magazine is a bit much. (Could get a volume of manga for that much)
Absolute sod all with regards to anime magazines in the uk (at least where I live), you might find the odd generic animation art magazine but nothing related to anime. Shame really since some of them have the best cover prints like gundam 00 on newtype.
The magazine that I like is Arcadia, but it's not readily available at convenience stores, so you have to either go to special hobby stores or book stores to buy it. It's very popular amongst game center fanatics though!
I usually buy my Hobby mags at my local anime shop (downtown), and heck their expensive. A Hobby Japan usually costs about $25 CDN dollars-ish. I don't usually buy Anime mags because theres nothing intresting unless if theres the Animes that I'm watching or something. It's still expensive ;_;
I go to japan center in london or Mitsukoshi for my mags. I did buy Hobby japan and Denkagi hobby but recently they haven't been very good so I've scaled back. HJ especially, haven't been great. They seem to do gundam and more gundam. nothing else, what happened to the old days when they had figure tutorials? Speaking of figures, I also get replicant and Figure maniacs when they are released too!
The same could be said for Newtype USA here in the states. I was a subscriber and it's not cheap $100.00+ USD for 12 months. You find out in the sixth month that they are rehashing all the same stories and information they did the first 6 months with a sprinkling of new statistics about sales charts that month. I really think they should goto a bimonthly publishing or just make the movie to digital publishing! Like Dannychoo.com!
actually i find animage isn't that bad, but maybe you compared it to newtype. i have a subscription to newtype usa, newtype jp, animage, and animedia. and sometimes get issues of hobby jp if i'm interested. so far, newtype jp is my favorite.
The only ones I see around here are Newtypes and Shonen. But all the other ones are availabe at your local japanese store. Good stuff.
I've never even seen NewType around here. This city sucks at having culture.
In Brazil, that I know of, there's only one store that imports magazines and books from Japan in the whole country, they charge a lot for them, and the selection of mags is up to them. No Dengeki Hime. T_T But they usualy have Newtype and even Animage. I've got some Animage here, but I ended up dropping them too. I'd get that one just because of the cute Shana screen though Danny. XD But yeah, the content is usually some pics and few info about new animes... nothing much.

I'm reasonably new to the manga/anime scene and was wondering what the general consensus is regarding Neo Magazine. Is it a worthwhile purchase? Cheers.
anybody have local anime magazine? is it good or what? have pretty good anime magazine here, just don't buy anymore since i know internet now
We get Newtype USA over here in the States but I'm not a big fan. Since I'm online all the time it never has any new info for me. I think there are a few others but they are not as common.
Yea I usually buy Newtype too, and others depending on the furoku items that come with it that month. There's a few japanese bookstores around my area. An Asahiya bookstore, and a Kinokuniya, they usually have everything around the same time they're released in japan, and at a decent price
I can't believe a lot of you guys have to pay so much for these mags. Here in New York, we have a Japanese Book Store called Book-Off. I get used mags there for about 3-5 dollars. I got a couple Animages, Newtypes, and Dengeki Hobbys from there. A couple of toku mags as well. But yeah, Animage... not so great. Lots of nice pics for someone who can't read much Japanese though.
@Darkvash- What? Where? I only go to kotokuniya to check out dengekihobby once in a while. If they only cost 5 bucks, I would buy them more often.
Sorry to hear you found out the hard way, Animage is not a great magazine. I will usually think about buying it if I see something I want like the Shana pencil board. Then again, I don't offten see the Animage at the local Japanese bookstore. Sometimes at one of the Japanese grocery stores will have it. For the most part the local Japanese bookstore caries the hobby magazines and Newtype. Occasionally I will see a figure magazine or Gundam Ace. Lots of woman's magazines though, but it makes for good business since the men are usually only in the shop on Friday evenings doing tachiyomi. Prices are not too high. I can't believe I use to pay $14USD or more for Newtype...
Newtype USA is absolute crap! They have no real current news and dwell on the same series issue after issue! I had a two year subscription to it which I cancelled after the first 14 months because I would either get the magazine 2 to 3 weeks after it hit the newstands or ( and this was the major problem ) I wouldn't get it at all! After multiple complaints they finally contacted me and said they would refund the remaining amount for my subscription. That was 2 years ago! Never got a check and each person I talked to had a different reason why it hadn't been sent! I finally gave up! I try to warn as many people as possible about how bad their customer service is! Previous to this I had a subscription to the Japanese Newtype, for four years, which I loved! I never had any problems with them! This is what happens when you "Americanize" something! Look how bad our Power Ranger toys are!

I concur with the Brooklynite that the 41st St. Book Off is great -- but, that's mostly for used manga ($1-$3). They did help me get Gentlemen's Alliance, one of the few not dumbed-down/edited in English translation -- I use it for J study. We have Kinokuniya in Rockefeller Center and Sanseido in nearby Edgewater NJ's Mitsuwa mall. The former is fun to watch J-girls go squee over fashion mags. I buy a mag when it has a pic of a dorama girl I like -- that means that daikawaii Hana no Kimi girl. Dealbreaker for a move to Boston/Cambridge is they've not got even one real J store.
@Ken: Here's the information. Telephone: (212) 685-1410 Address: Book-Off 12 E 41st St New York, NY 10017+6221 It's a great store that sells just about everything you can think of. The second floor is where you'll find all the Manga, Anime Mags, Artbooks, etc. The first floor sells American books, Japanese and American DVDs(Anime!), Music, and an entire wall of different types of Magazines. You may find some of the mags you're looking for hidden there as well. Anyway, most of the stuff in this shop is used, so you'll find a lot of great deals. Recently, I found American Zeta Gundam DVD's for about 10 dollars a pop. That's ten bucks for ten eps! :) Happy hunting
Theres a Kinokuniya in KLCC so i have quite a few mags to chose from but sadly, they dont carry Megami or Dengeki Hime. =_="
Thanks for the tip Darkvash, next year when I'm in New York I'm definitely going there ^^
there are some specialty stores that carries otaku-related magazine but unfortunately they only carry a limited titles like Newtype and Hobby Japan. im always looking for Megami magazine and Dengeki Hime here but i guess i have to order one online lolz
Available here but i ussually get those Taiwan translate version! Japanese version is like i spend money on it but i onli get to understand 60% of the contents in it!
I used to get Newtype, haven't bought one in a while though. A local store has the latest issue of Hobby Japan to browse through, so no need to buy it (it's a bloody evil magazine too! ;p) ^_^
Suprisingly, yes. They are all translated into English though. I need to get a subscription to Newtype but thanks Danny, I will avoid this one.
shana pencil board?? dang it might have to pick up one.. even if it crap what anime is in the 3rd pic??? just wonderin since she has nice eyes....
In the plain Jane state of Oklahoma, we carry Anime magazines. Cool thing is, some come with DVDs. How cool is that?
nevermind.. found it.. dragonaut.. looks interesting to the scifi fan.. and the dragon fan... and the big eye fan..O_o.
I get my Hobby mag fix at Sunshine Plaza, it's a cool place which has many hobby and figurine related stores, it's a little out of the way, but good prices though, much cheaper than Comics Connection and faster too...
i know of a japanese book store that has almost everytthing. bit expensive tho
I live close to Little Tokyo so that's already a given, but the closet place to get anime magazines for me is actually in Chinatown if you know where to look...
Japanese magazines are extremely hard to get here. So far I haven't come by a store that sells them and if they would, they would probably sell it for 5 times the original price. =_=
