The most recent edition of Animage that I bought and definitely the last.

Usually get Newtype but thought I'd give Animage a try to see what its like. Don't think I've ever had the pleasure of picking up such a load of bollocks. It's got a few bits n pieces on the latest anime but the rest of it seems to be filled with nothing. At least this edition came with a cute Shana pencil board though.

I remember when I was back in the UK, I would go to the Japan Center in Piccadilly to pick up Newtype - cost me about 3 times the original cost.

Are there a wide choice of Japanese mags available in your region? If there are - then avoid Animage.

Thnx for the warning Danny.
But most of the Japanese Mags here are gundam related. Since they are imports, I probably out never spend 20 CND on one

You'd be hard pressed to find Newtype magazine around here if you didn't know where to look. However you can find some back issues if you look really really hard. The only thing abundant that is japanese here are sushi restuarants.

Anime magazines are way too expensive to be worth getting here in Australia, and Newtype USA was basically just an expensive catalogue of recently licensed anime in the US and completely irrelevant to the local scene. It was also filled with tidbits of info I already heard about ages ago. Blogs have made "scene" magazines obsolete. Magazines have to offer me high quality delicious images to earn my patronage.

Also, if you don't want the magazine, can I have that Ink-chan foldout? :D

Yeah, there is Japan Centre in Piccadily Circus where I go for my monthly Shounen Jump, expensive ;_;. You can even book flights to Japan there and eat ramen.

There is also a Japanese library in Acton near the children's Japanese School... did you go there Danny Choo?

Very hard to find good japanese anime/hobby mags, the only ones I've seen on sale were Hobby Japan, Dengeki Hobby and Shounen Jump. The prices are the same if I ordered them from HLJ, normally I get my mags from HLJ like Megami and Megami Deluxe, still need to get my hands in a Dengeki Hime ^^

the kinokuniya bookstore here has quite a variety of japanese magazines and idol pictorials.

i used to go there to read Shounen Jump (actually it's more like look at the pictures since the words are in japanese.

i later switched to reading manga online since i can get it translated and faster too.

Absolute sod all with regards to anime magazines in the uk (at least where I live), you might find the odd generic animation art magazine but nothing related to anime. Shame really since some of them have the best cover prints like gundam 00 on newtype.

I did buy Hobby japan and Denkagi hobby but recently they haven't been very good so I've scaled back. HJ especially, haven't been great. They seem to do gundam and more gundam. nothing else, what happened to the old days when they had figure tutorials?

Speaking of figures, I also get replicant and Figure maniacs when they are released too!

The same could be said for Newtype USA here in the states. I was a subscriber and it's not cheap $100.00+ USD for 12 months. You find out in the sixth month that they are rehashing all the same stories and information they did the first 6 months with a sprinkling of new statistics about sales charts that month. I really think they should goto a bimonthly publishing or just make the movie to digital publishing! Like Dannychoo.com!

In Brazil, that I know of, there's only one store that imports magazines and books from Japan in the whole country, they charge a lot for them, and the selection of mags is up to them.

No Dengeki Hime. T_T

But they usualy have Newtype and even Animage. I've got some Animage here, but I ended up dropping them too.

I'd get that one just because of the cute Shana screen though Danny. XD

But yeah, the content is usually some pics and few info about new animes... nothing much.

There's a few japanese bookstores around my area. An Asahiya bookstore, and a Kinokuniya, they usually have everything around the same time they're released in japan, and at a decent price

I can't believe a lot of you guys have to pay so much for these mags. Here in New York, we have a Japanese Book Store called Book-Off. I get used mags there for about 3-5 dollars.

I got a couple Animages, Newtypes, and Dengeki Hobbys from there. A couple of toku mags as well.

But yeah, Animage... not so great. Lots of nice pics for someone who can't read much Japanese though.

Sorry to hear you found out the hard way, Animage is not a great magazine. I will usually think about buying it if I see something I want like the Shana pencil board. Then again, I don't offten see the Animage at the local Japanese bookstore. Sometimes at one of the Japanese grocery stores will have it.

For the most part the local Japanese bookstore caries the hobby magazines and Newtype. Occasionally I will see a figure magazine or Gundam Ace. Lots of woman's magazines though, but it makes for good business since the men are usually only in the shop on Friday evenings doing tachiyomi.

Prices are not too high. I can't believe I use to pay $14USD or more for Newtype...

Newtype USA is absolute crap! They have no real current news and dwell on the same series issue after issue! I had a two year subscription to it which I cancelled after the first 14 months because I would either get the magazine 2 to 3 weeks after it hit the newstands or ( and this was the major problem ) I wouldn't get it at all! After multiple complaints they finally contacted me and said they would refund the remaining amount for my subscription. That was 2 years ago! Never got a check and each person I talked to had a different reason why it hadn't been sent! I finally gave up! I try to warn as many people as possible about how bad their customer service is!
Previous to this I had a subscription to the Japanese Newtype, for four years, which I loved! I never had any problems with them! This is what happens when you "Americanize" something! Look how bad our Power Ranger toys are!

I concur with the Brooklynite that the 41st St. Book Off is great -- but, that's mostly for used manga ($1-$3). They did help me get Gentlemen's Alliance, one of the few not dumbed-down/edited in English translation -- I use it for J study.
We have Kinokuniya in Rockefeller Center and Sanseido in nearby Edgewater NJ's Mitsuwa mall. The former is fun to watch J-girls go squee over fashion mags. I buy a mag when it has a pic of a dorama girl I like -- that means that daikawaii Hana no Kimi girl.
Dealbreaker for a move to Boston/Cambridge is they've not got even one real J store.

Address:
Book-Off
12 E 41st St
New York, NY 10017+6221

It's a great store that sells just about everything you can think of. The second floor is where you'll find all the Manga, Anime Mags, Artbooks, etc.

The first floor sells American books, Japanese and American DVDs(Anime!), Music, and an entire wall of different types of Magazines. You may find some of the mags you're looking for hidden there as well. Anyway, most of the stuff in this shop is used, so you'll find a lot of great deals.

Recently, I found American Zeta Gundam DVD's for about 10 dollars a pop. That's ten bucks for ten eps! :)

Happy hunting
