So you have just moved to Japan and are feeling a bit lonely. Not to keen on a Candy Girl or a Tenga cup, you seek to buy a dog.
How much are you willing to pay for one? How about 98,000 yen (870 USD) for starters to get this little fella above?

Or if you have a bit more money then how does 168,000 yen (1500 USD) sound for this French Toy Poodle below?
I'm not knowledgeable about the price of dogs at all but they seem pretty expensive to me. After some research, I found that Bulldogs are the most expensive costing between 230,000 yen and a whopping 450,000 yen (4000 USD) (source).
Or if you would rather get a bit more value for money then how using that 450,000 yen to get 450 rodents (1,000 yen each) to run about your house.
Dont forget that these are a popular pets to have in Japan too if you are on a low budget.
Do you own pets? Are dogs expensive in your region?

Wow pets are expensive in Japan. Also I wonder if they have animal shelters there?

Guinea pigs ftw! xD
I always had a lot of those funny little pets since I was in grade school. Kept them in an home-made outdoor cage, and the maximum I had at once was 15, and had to separate them haha.

Never really been interested in cats or dogs though...

Guinea pigs- YES!
Love them. So cute, easy to care for, cheaper than dogs, and you don't have to walk them.

Cats are even better!

Rabbits, hamsters, mice, oh my! - I absolutely ADORE rodents.

dogs are great - but they're unintelligent (proven), arrogant, expensive, and SO MUCH work. People who are overweight and obese should consider getting one, though.

Wow! That's ridiculously expensive. I have a dog and I went to the animal shelter to buy him. After all the paper work and administration fee's I only ended up paying $30 USD for him. He may have been a year old, but there were plenty of pups to choose from.

I only went for the older dog becaue he was already house broken, and I didn't feel like going through that again.

Wow, how expensive.
Though probably the dogs have all the paperwork and good care a dog can have.

I mean, dogs with pedigree are expensive on Brazil also (though probably not THAT expensive)... but if you can take any dog, you can find one for free or cheap almost anywhere.

I remember buying my dog when he was months old for something around 40 bucks (daschhund).
He's 15 now, and has diabetes... so I have to give insulin shots twice a day, and he has a special diet that kinda costs a lot, but we decided to keep him to the end.

Comparing to trained pedigree dogs mine is kinda dumb and uneducated... but no problems with me.

Though I am kinda lonely, I don't plan on having pets after my dog... I'm probably moving to an apartment, and won't have the time to take care of a dog anymore... and I'm against buying a pet to abandon it, so...

I would get a cat, as they are more independent... but I'm allergic, so until they create a special breed of non-allergenic cats (I heard people are already trying that)...

Actually, I'm surprised it's so low!!

For purebred or otherwise specially bred dogs, prices in the US can easily reach the rates you quoted, depending on the area, breed, and reputation/conditions of the kennel.

I expected prices in Japan to eclipse to be significantly higher. I imagine other pet expenses in Japan would be much higher, though, due to supply and demand.

Man, I hate pet stores. They're nothing but animal factories and treat the poor animals as nothing more than products. It's makes me so sad to think of these poor animals go through.

I'm sure you can do a little searching and find all sort of horror stories about these types of places.

Those prices are really on the low end for purebred puppies. For a champion bred puppy, they usually start at $2500 USD. But then again, those puppies are pet pups.

Seems awfully expensive to me, but then, if I were to buy a pet, I'd probably search for cheap ones on Craigslist. I'm not really the type to get attached to pets anyway, though, and I certainly wouldn't pay $500 extra for "purebred"

I walked into a petstore in Mitsukoshi somewhere in Ginza. I was suprised that they had a petstore inside a mall. I wanted to take pictures of the pets there but the attendant told me no pictures (while crossing her arms and flinging them down). ^^; although I did see tiny dogs being sold for a little over 250,000 yen. ouch!

Not sure anymore
Dogs are cheaper here. In your region, I suppose it follows that if you can afford a dog, you might be rich. Consuming space (residentially) in Japan costs you, so getting a big place for a dog(s) to run about is probably significant.

Erm, I think most of you guys are missing the point...
Those are pedigree dogs, their family tree are recorded better than most of us (lets face it, we are all mutts compared to them).

My cousin bought a pure breed pedigree Beagle with 3 champions in its family for £800 ($1600), so I'm not surprised at those prices.

While animals at pet stores are sometimes ungodly expensive (ex-gf bought a $2k Chihuahua) how are the animal shelters/pounds in Japan?

What was interesting was these two dogs were mentioned in Lucky Star lol, kind of blew us away as we wanted to see them animated. I believe the dog thats shown right after the LS opening is a Husky.

You have to walk with a dog twice a day for at least half an hour. That's to much for me. And it's expensive. The prices are similar to yours - depends on the race of course. A pug is quite popular at the moment. Without very good connections you will have to wait for about 2 years, I've heard.

For a dog you also have to pay taxes and buy a lot of food. So, to answer your question: if I had the choice I'd prefer a rodent - but my only pets are fishes.

Man, why so expensive. Pets can be expensive here too which is probably why I don't have any right now. A pure breed American terrier is the most expensive I've seen here in California for dogs. Depending on the color, age, and parentage puppies can cost you anywhere from 500 to nearly 2000 dollars each.

Pedigree dogs can be very expensive over here.I prefer mongrels - they're just as cute, and the genetic defects brought about by inbreeding inpedigree breeds are often 'ironed out' by expanding the gene pool.
I got 2 mongrel puppies for free two weeks ago because the owner of the pregnant dog didn't have the space for puppies and because they were mongrels, she couldn't sell them!

I hate dogs for the simple reason that the dogs living at the house left and right to mine are like hellspawns. They just will not shut up. And why is it that the loudest dogs always have rude owners? I swear to god i'm almost at breaking point with them. And you know what's bad about the legal system here? It doesn't work for rich dog owners because they simply pay the fine and go on with life. I've tried dog whistles, i've tried playing loud dog sounds in retaliation, i've even taken them to court. Nothing works!
I equally hate rodents. They keep eating through the telephone wires outside.

dogs in the mall ten years ago used to cost that much. rodents cost about half that much unless you want a bigger hamster. dogs are easier to take care of than hamsters too, but they eat more and food doesn't last as long. btw, rodents stink up the wazoo if you don't clean their bedding every couple days. the up-side i guess is that you don't have to give them a bath since they clean themselves (you're not supposed to anyway). dogs... you gotta wash.

I've had a dog for 16 years, he was given to us for free, he was a mixed breed but very strong, smart and friendly. Few dogs in the world have given as much love as my dog has. Now, three years after his death I still cry while typing this.
It hurts my heart to see puppies and other animals being treated like goods, locked up in a small box with a display window. If you ask me, that's animal cruelty. We don't do that in Europe (not in most/my countries anyway).

Dog for sure!

About those prices, I'd say it depends on the breed of dog and how well bred it is.

Here in sweden a purebred dog could cost you around 1800 USD and up.
A dog that's not a pure breed could go for anything from 100 USD to 1000 USD.

A good "cheap" option, if you got the heart & time for it, is to go to an animal shelter and get an abandoned/mistreated dog. They generally might require a lot more training/attention than a regular dog, but it'd be worth it to give it a loving home.

Those are insane prices for dogs. Pets like dogs here costs around 5000yen each depending upon the breed. I think bulldogs costs about 15k yen or somewhere around that price.

Wouldn't want to keep animals though since I don't like to clean up after them. ^^

I would rather have a dog (I have a dog) over a rodent.

The prices are about the same here with a few exceptions. Bulldogs are much cheaper (they must be hard to export?) than you think over here and most dogs, assuming it does not have a "pure" pedigree (for dog show people- I think ours is a full black labrador retriever)dogs will cost anywhere from $1000-$5000 USD, again depending on the pedigree. Cant remember how much we got my dog for as a puppy, but she is 15 years old! That is ANCIENT for a dog.

I think the prices aren't that outrageous. Our dog (see my avatar), a Cavalier King Charles and Cocker Spaniel cross cost us $800 Cdn. Purebreds would cost $1200 and up.

But all the girls saying, "Kawaii!" or "How cute!" is priceless.

It would be nice to know how much dogs natural to whichever country your from are. How much do Shiba-ken cost in Japan?

Animal shelters here have lots of pure blooded types of dogs for free...

You can buy a labrador retriever for 50 euros, a poddle for 30/80 euros, and it's +/- for those prices.

i'd rather keep a cat than a dog. not only that they are cute but they are also one of the cleaner pets to have around ^^

i have heard that there is this spa for dogs and even a high-end restaurant that caters to dogs there in tokyo

I was going to say the same thing as Roody. Why not just adopt? I'm not sure how evil (if at all) the pet stores may be in Japan, but if it's like anything in the USA, you should simply adopt. I'm by no means a pet-activist, but I think it's better to adopt.

We adopted our dog for free because he had defects, and being a purebred, that's a bad thing.
He's a runt.
