Japanese Toilets

These photos were taken at the Yodobashi store in Akiba.
Both signs ask customers not to *eat* or stay in the toilet for a prolonged period of time.
I dont think I could ever bring myself to eat in a toilet - especially when I have a severe case of the diarrhea where bits of watery poo would splash all over the place and end up *in* my food. If I was eating a curry pot noodle - I wouldn't be able to tell the difference.

Most of the public toilets in Tokyo are pretty clean. Many of them don't have towels near the sink however - all Japanese seem to carry a handkerchief or tissues.

Some toilets in Shinjuku really stink and induce that "want-to-vomit" feeling. There must be a special word for this - you know when you start to go "uuegh, uuueeeghh!" I remember many toilets around Oxford street in London being the same smell. The worst toilets I encountered however were in Seattle. Toilets have these huge gaps in them so that you can see who's inside taking a dump. I was told that the doors were made like that as many drug takers used toilets to get their dose.

First time visitors to Japan may walk into a cubicle only to find that its a Japanese style toilet or "Washiki Toilet" (和式トイレ). Because your payload lands on the ceramic right below you (instead of in water), you immediately get a whiff of your fresh steamy cake. The design also allows to you inspect your cake close up - even if you dont want to.

Theres so many nice toilets in japan, but i foudn one weird one in a restaurant in kyoto. before the water entered the bowl after you flushed, it had a tap ontop so you could wash your hands with clean toilet water. weirdest thing ive seen, expecially since they had a sink right next to it.

I've seen the washiki toilet, decided against it as "western toilets" were on the side ^-^. The bathrooms here are cleaned by the state, but they do smell with all that goes on in the bathroom.

Gagging or heaving. If you try puking while your stomach is empty (and nothing comes out) it's called dry heaving.

Japanese toilets are magnificent! Toto toilets are awesome! They have like air-fresheners, heaters, dryers, water jets- for the perfect flush! Here in Toronto, especially the subways, reek of inhumane odors with no fresh surface air nearby. The french have some pretty ones too.

I love that they request people not eat while using the toilet. Never would I have imagined this to happen often enough to be a problem that required a sign.

Not sure anymore
I've seen Japanese prank videos where guys squat on washiki public-cubicle-type toilets, then 10 seconds after you close the door (without warning), a machine will open up the roof hatch, and bring up the floor to that level, letting the public see you hiney-nekkid.

Our streets mostly have male public toilets in pink. No door, no tissue, no clean running water to wash your hands. Commonly, cab drivers use them. When people pass by it, it reeks of pee.

Although there are a bit of improvements with toilets and toilet etiquette in my place, there are still ignorant ones who couldn't bother to use the goddamn toilet flush and some stinkin' brats like to play with the roll of toilet papers. Of course, I'm talking public toilets around the city center. Further ahead outta the city and it usually looks like Silent Hill.

Japanese toilet are the cleanest and most advanced I have been into. Just be careful about the water pressure knob/button. Sometime people forget to turn down the pressure and you will be in for a surprise OoO.

I think if they have a small LCD TV I might have stayed longer to escape from office work for a few minutes LOL.

All American toilet have big gap in the toilet stall. I missed the Asian toilets. Also those crouching toilet are more sanitary because you don't share germs with a toilet site and no splash.

God, don't remind me. When I first landed in Japan, I got on the subway and when I reached Fukuoka station, I needed to go to the bathroom. This was the kind of toilet I encountered. I thought to myself, what have I gotten into. Eventually, you learn to squat like the rest of em'.

This is me complaining about the UK...again. You would think that the toilets would be GREAT in GREAT BRITAIN. But no....they are some of the worst ive been in. Pee all over the floor. Fresh "chocolate" in the toilets and tracing paper for toilet paper. When i was Dubai, the situation was completley different. It was like walking into a suite. There were even small tv monitors built into the wall above every cubible so you could watch tv while you fix the leak.

But yeah, public loos in public places like Yoyogi park arent in the best condition (tramps and drunks use them a lot) but toilets in shops such as Mos burger, starbucks or Yoshinoya crap on the toilets we have in the uk - most of them are washlets! I really miss those - especially the day after a booze-up :-(

Ive only ever had a pee in one of those trough toilets. I would rather crap my pants than do the stooping thing over one of them!

No, hard feelings but the worst toilet that i have ever been to was in china where there were no doors at all though that was some years ago.
Toilets in Malaysia are most famous for being virtually irreparable because after it is serviced, some fool will just destroy it again or clog it up with trash. Also, i have heard of cases of mugging taking place in toilets quite often.
Well, at least the toilets i encountered while in japan were quite ok with the exception of the one in Meiji Jinja which was surprisingly smelly.

I'm from Selden on Long Island in New York.... not only are the public bathrooms like stinky wet caves... on a good Saturday night the people in this town pick any spot for a bathroom. They should have signs in places here here saying "Bathrooms are located in the back, not where you currently stand."

The sad thing is that restrooms in ALL of the schools I've been to are poorly maintained. We rarely have toilet paper or paper towels, or soap. The stalls don't have locks anymore, so as you're poo-ing away you have to worry about holding the door shut.(thats why I load up on peptobismol before I go to school, its just that bad -_-;)

Before I went to Japan, I was told how to use those kinds of toilets. However, when I was in Ueno, the stall was so tiny, I wasn't sure which way to face, so I ended up using it like a Western style toilet.

First of all, Danny, thank you for this thoughtful post. ;)

I tend to only pee (never poo) in public restrooms. I tend also to keep my breath to avoid incoming potential odors and stay no longer than one minute on my watch.

Those toilets look like the Turkish ones, where you have to aim well (!) or have to crouch to drop your stuff and have a clean hit (You see what I mean? Good!).

Eating WHILE being in the toilets? You have to be jesting. Going to the restroom just after eating is something I already don't like to do and I go for the technique described in paragraph 2.

Thanks again for those little pieces of not-so-useful information. Good for laughs but not so great when you're eating/just having eaten/about to eat/thinking of your next meal.
Hopefully I'm not concerned. Keep that up (Better than those cross-dressing posts!!)! XD

Ugh...that "watery diarrhea flying everywhere" part was well...a bit disturbing...I mean sure, I have diarrhea every now an then....but it doesn't go all over the place...then again...I've never had diarrhea on those types of toilets. But I must say (from personal experience), even taking a regular crap/piss on one of those is a challenge...and a bit messy.
