Natto

Natto is a traditional Japanese food made from fermented Soybeans - read up on it at Wikipedia if you have not come across it. The smell is incredible and I still have not acquired the taste for it. Many Japanese people cant eat it too. Have you tried or come across Natto? The maki sushi with the poo like substance is Natto - me wife loves it ^^;

Japanator reports that there is a campaign in the Aomori prefecture to stop men staring at the ladies at mixed onsen (hot springs). Somebody should try to explain to the campaigners that mens eyes are attracted to womens eyes a bit like how magnets work. Nearly every day in April, people have been killing themselves with hydrogen sulfide gas - some of them go quietly while some end up harming others with the gas. The latest person reported to kill herself was Miyuki Asou - a gravure idol who turned to making AV movies.. "This 22 years old woman had been a stages actress when she was a high school student. Later, she entered in the show business world, and until recently, she’d been active as a gravure idol. However, she couldn’t become so popular, and this February, she challenged to a porn video. And thanks to her past career, she could become one of popular actresses. But it seems this change and transfer was a stress to her, and on March 18th, she killed herself in a bath room at her apartment. Before she passed away, it is rumored that she had notified her suicide on her blog, but her agency has already closed it, so there are no means to confirm it." Via Japan Probe.

One thing I like about Ikea is the simplicity of the manuals which they use worldwide - the same furniture, the same manuals - until now... "Ikea Japan will modify its furniture assembly manuals after a man injured himself putting together a chest of drawers: The industry ministry has instructed Ikea Japan K.K., the Japanese unit of the Swedish retail furniture giant, to improve its product manuals after receiving a report that a customer was severely injured while assembling a chest of drawers. The Economy, Trade and Industry Ministry has been informed that a man in his 60s from Yotsukaido, Chiba Prefecture, was hit in the eye by a fragment from a screw that cracked while he was assembling a Mandal chest of drawers he bought from Ikea last July. He has been having eye problems ever since. In response to the instruction, Ikea Japan compiled special assembly manuals written in Japanese in addition to its conventional manuals, which contain simple illustrations and brief instructions. “The explanations were not sufficient and we doubt that the accident resulted simply from carelessness on the user’s part,” said a ministry official at the office in charge of product accidents." The New Akihabara

Now that many of the smaller shops in Akihabara have been demolished, it looks like more and more places are opening up tailored for folks other than otaku as Akiba Blog reports. The Akiba Tolim building contains stores that are not typically "akiba" or "otaku" as you can see from the list of shops. Me wonders if Akiba will remain the otaku heaven that we all love and know...

Fuji-Q Highland

Fuji-Q highland has some of the fastest, tallest and longest roller coasters in the world. You may want to pay a vist when you are in Japan - they also have the Gundam Crisis attraction where you can see a 1/1 scale Gundam. Check with the hotel that you are staying with as they usually have access info at the concierge. I personally cant take roller coasters - usually leave me dizzy. BTW, The Japanese call these "Jet Coasters." Great CM for Fuji-Q below.

TV in Akiba

One of the things that is on the increase in Akiba is the amount of TV camera crews who can be seen here and there filming stuff that seems strange to them but normal for us - more pics from yesterday at Akiba Blog. UPDATE: Posting link to AkibaMap who also has photos from yesterday but you can actually see faces. On a different subject related to the photos, the Japanese Portrait Rights are being taken to the extreme - soon we wont be able to see faces of any kind on Japanese blogs at all...

Is this more or less the type of stuff that you would be picking up when you visit Japan? I can see that Windbell is a good owner and *really* cares for his pet dolphin. When I was about 20 I bought just about the same but mostly 3D health care material.

You saw how Japanese dog owners put their dogs in bags and here is more photographic evidence of how dogs over here will loose the use of their legs as owners prevent them from walking. But its OK - because sharks growing legs and will replace dogs in Japan.

More breaking news from Japan Probe. A 46 year old man was arrested for stealing 1666 items of underwear and when caught confessed that he enjoyed sniffing them. But what people don't usually take note of is the police who *always* lay out all items of underwear as you can see in the video. I guess this is another reason to join the Japanese police force - to fondle womens underwear as part of the job.
