"NTT has begun selling a device that transmits data across the surface of the human body and lets users communicate with electronic devices simply by touching them, the company announced on April 23. The new product, called “Firmo,” consists of a card-sized transmitter carried in the user’s pocket. The card converts stored data into a weak AC electric field that extends across the body, and when the user touches a device or object embedded with a compatible receiver, the electric field is converted back into a data signal that can be read by the device. For now, Firmo transfers data at 230kbps, but NTT is reportedly working on a low-cost 10Mbps version that can handle audio/video data transfers. "A new Apple patent showing a head-mounted laser display surfaced today. The patent, which looks like a rather odd pair of sun glasses, would allow you to view video (or your Mac's screen) in a manner similar to the MyVu products. This patent also includes a geeky looking device that attaches to the belt, probably for image/video processing, and battery." Many companies showed off their latest display and LCD technology at the Display Expo recently held at Tokyo Big Sight. The most exciting thing were the digital paper products. This 3.5inch display is 0.2 mm thick. This means that we can look at 2D girls all day long anywhere and everywhere - just stick the display in your textbook or even your underpants without feeling (too) unconformable. Psystar released a computer originally called "Open Mac" which they renamed to "Open Computer" for a reason - it runs unmodified versions of the Mac OS Leopard and costs only 399 USD. Akihabara News has their hands on one of the smallest Windows Vista machines I've seen so far - I was hoping that the MacAir announcement was going to be something this small but alas... The size is 84x188x25.9mm, weight is 470g, screen is 5” with a 1024x600 resolution and LED backlight powered by a 1.33GHz Atom Z520 with 1GB of RAM - all for 90,200 yen.
