Monoqlo (家電批評 monoqlo) is a new monokei magazine that hit the shelves of convenience stores and bookshops throughout Japan (and available at Amazon).
In this case, "monokei" refers to mags like Best Gear, Mono Magazine and Begin which cover electronic gadgets and other "cool" stuff.
I have been asked to write for monoqlo and the first edition contains my article on one of my favorite subjects...

Which is figures! ^^;

Unlike most of the other monokei magazines which only tell you how good a product is, monoqlo takes a different approach and endeavors to help consumers by telling them the truth. If a product is crap, monoqlo will say so. Monoqlo also gives pointers on what consumers should look out for when buying a particular product. Also covered are things like why X is so expensive and Y is so cheap.

My first article is about things that newbie figure buyers should look out for like gloss paint used on hair (ugh), glue between the seams (double ugh), gaps between joints (...), bad paintwork and most importantly, if the figure has a skirt - it must have cast off ability ^^;

Am planning on talking about the different types of figures available in the next issue.

Info on SLRs. Monoqlo gives you pointers on what you can ask shop assistants to see whether you can trust them or not. While some shop assistants in Japan know what they are talking about (and hence give you good advice), some other shop assistants have not a clue what they are talking about (where you should promptly walk away). The worst shop assistants are in Sakuraya and Bic Camera - a bunch of lazy students.

A quick summary of the media that I have been appearing in of late.

Was in yesterdays Nikkei Sangyo Newspaper talking about this site and how the contents, community and technology involved have lead to a modest income through affiliate services like Amazon Associates and Google Adsense etc. I didnt go into detail regarding exactly how much I make but decided to be open about the most I made in a single day last December (about 100,000 yen). I also mentioned that my income from online activities has made enough for me to pay for our house, bills, food and figures ^^;

Some companies approach me offering cash to review their services or products for them. I talk about how I dont do that because by accepting money, I would be obliged to write something good even though I thought the product or service sucks - to me this would be lying to my readers. I do continue to accept free figure samples but dont guarantee a good review ^^; latest free samples are Haruka and Fauna (pictured here) ^o^

There are many services cropping up in Japan who pay bloggers to write stuff. For example, Sony would have a "the first 500 people to write a review for this product gets 300 yen" type thing. Through these "pay to blog" services, many are starting to wonder about the legitimacy of info in blogs. In Japan, people have always had a tendency to rely on the information in blogs as it was a "human" writing their views as opposed to a corporate company flogging their goods.

Was also interviewed recently by Ascii online (Interview here).

This time I talk about how dannychoo.com developed from being a site which I used to practice my PHP and upload family photos to being an Otaku portal.

I also talk about my blog strategy and some of the features of Nav2.0. I also mention officially of my plans to license Nav2.0 in the future.

Here are a few tips for those who are interested in starting a blog and making money.

Use a customizable platform like WordPress. I hear there are a ton of plugins and is most configurable.

Write about stuff that you are passionate about. Being passionate about a something means that you will do that something well. The same goes for life - working in a field that you are passionate about enables you to reach your destination quicker. So the formula is "passion + focus = arrive at destination quicker".

Automate your work flow. Find tools that will help you prepare the content so that you dont have to. You should be concentrating on thinking of and writing the content - not preparing it. Look for tools that batch rotate, resize, watermark and upload your images etc.

Read my affiliate story and the blog monetization article to get you going.

Work with other site owners to share traffic. The Featured Feeds EX program is perfect help grow your site from zero visitors.

Windows 100% is a hardcore Otaku magazine which features Otaku apps (like the ones which help you download open source movies and games), Otaku news, games and other mooha.
This months edition features an interview with some mad dude who goes round Tokyo in stormtrooper armor and loves anime and Gundam. This bloke is asked a hundred Otaku questions where some of those questions are picked up and used in the mag.
Lemme translate some of the Q n A’s

Q:Tell us about some “happenings” at Amazon.
A:Amazon has a system called Marketplace which enables one to list their second hand/used items along with the same product that Amazon carries in their catalog. When Health Care products launched in the US, it was possible to list “used condoms”…

Q:How do folks react when they see you?
A:People who don’t really know Starwars say things like “Its Darth Vader!” and “You Gundam?” Most people whip out their mobile phones to take pictures though.

Q:What advice would you give to people who are about to take up watching anime?
A:Watch Cowboy Bebop or else.

Q:What aspect of Gundam makes it Japanese?
A:Recent Gundam series (Seed/Destiny) always has a wobby boob seen – you wouldn’t see that in any other countries anime.

Q:Tell us how you came to like Gundam.
A:Lived in Japan for 5 years and took no interest in Gundam whatsoever. I was in Tokyu Hands one day and saw GP01 Fix Figuration – thought to myself “Coool!” and made the purchase.
Then proceeded to find out which Gundam anime GP01 was from and was mighty impressed with Gundam 0083.

And here are a few questions from the CD that comes with the mag.

Q:What is your favorite proverb, maxim, or a phrase?
A:"Your future is what you make it - so make it a good one.

Q:What do you hate?
A:Cigarette smoke and racism.

Q:Tell us of a recent event that made you happy.
A:dannychoo.com recently reached an average of 10,000 unique visitors per day.

Q:If you was going to be stuck on a desert island, what one item would you take with you?
A:Doraemon - because I can pull anything out from his magic pocket.

Q:What do you do on your days off from work?
A:Maintain our affiliate sites, research internet technologies and news.

Q:The world is going to go boom next week - what do you do with the remaining time?
A:Drop everything and spend it with my wife.

Q:Fave games?
A:Devil May Cry series, Metal Gear series, Advanced wars, Shooting games.

Q:Whats your fave Mobile Suit?
A:Wing Gundam.

Q:If you could be any anime character, who would you be?
A:Anybody who rides a Mobile Suit - Probably Amuro Rei.

Q:Your fave film?
A:Trading Places with Eddie Murphy and Dan Ackroyd. This film really helped me think about what I was doing with my life and what I should be doing.

Q:Where did you learn Japanese?
A: When I was 16(?) back in the UK, I got myself an imported Sega Mega Drive console. I wanted more info on import games so I went to the Japan Center bookshop in Piccadilly to get some mags - I couldn't read and decided that I wanted to so I started to self learn Japanese.
One day when I was in the bookshop, I came across Young Jump mag and saw a VERY cute girl on the cover - it was an idol called Hikaru Nishida. I wanted to know more about her so I increased my learning speed! Mastered basic Japanese grammar in two weeks and managed to remember about 50 kanji per day. Wanted to learn kanji quicker so I dropped learning the stroke sequence.

Got my Japanese language proficiency test level 4 and then level 2 the year after. Then decided to go to university to learn Japanese - took Korean at the same time.

While I was going to university, I worked part time at a Japanese restaurant every night from 6 to 10 pm. The money saved was used to travel to Japan every year to absorb the culture - ended up spending most of that money in the first day at Akihabara.

All 100 questions can be found on the CD rom that comes with the mag ;-)

For those of you who dont know, Metropolis is a magazine aimed at the non-Japanese (Gaijin) community in Japan.
Metropolis just happens to be owned by another of my entrepreneur acquaintances Mark Devlin. Mark hails from Glasgow, Scotland, and since arriving in Japan in October 1989 he has under his belt CrissCross, Japan Today, Metropolis besides other things. Mark is my type of entrepreneur! (more entrepreneurs in the related posts below)
