Have you though about using thickbox for the images? I use it on my site, works much better than lightbox, and it's built using jQuery. I like Chrome. It's about as fast as Safari but without the font blurring. It still has a few issues like it's sometimes difficult to save large images (25+ MB) on moe.imouto.org and it should inform the user before installing GoogleUpdate.exe but besides that it looks promising.
