If they are accurate with their translations and offer minimal karaoke (heck I'm fine with just the translation of the lyrics), then they can do whatever they want.

Although the example in the Hikaru No Go screenshot is quite awful (hard subs covering half the screen!), I've seen a lot of translator notes on top where fansubbers use smaller and thinner fonts. I'm very disturbed that some of the DC members want to see a 2D girl instead of a 3D one. The one up there is frigging cute, AND it's rare to see an actual girl holding a katana (at least one that obviously doesn't look like she practices).
