I'm also using dreamweaver mx to edit my hobby homepage and use firworks mx for graphics and modifying pictures. I'm still a n00b with photoshop software. Danny, Which db software would you recommend us to use? even for beginners. I've already forgotten how to use oracle sql since I'm not majoring in databases but multimedia and the internet.

Thanks for the web developer tips. Eventhough I'm just a graphic designer at the moment, my boss sometimes wants me to manage misc contents on some of the clients sites. The links you gave will surely help me =)

Congratulations ;p I always use PHP too, and I use Zend Studio (in combination with Zend Platform). It allows me to debug PHP like any other programming language using breakpoints, watches, etc. (Platform is not necessary for debugging though, but it helps with catching errors/slow queries/caching on the server side) But... my current Zend Studio 5.5 has bad support for multi-byte text..., hopefully that will get better in the future.

Ran into similar performance issues with some of clients PHP applications. However using APC and memcached solved most of them. Add some properly configured mod_expires to your apache and switch of php's ultra-stupid autosending of headers. You might also think about setting up a server for static contents, thttpd or lighttpd will give amazing results about throughput and take away the work from your apache. Another thing that really provides great hints for optimizing is xdebug together with wincachegrind (or kcachegrind), it will show you exactly the bottlenecks in your app. By the way, smultron rocks very much on OSX, however for "real" development you better go with Eclipse :)

Heh, I admin a server hosting over 1000 on IIS. So far, its been good, but not my choice. I do like Dreamweaver for playing around and doing the basic, rapid layout of a site, but I prefer using a simple editor for coding CSS and cleaning up the code. I do need to go back and work with PHP, SQL, and Ruby. Don't want to be working in tech support forever

Omedetou Danny! PHP and MySQL was quite hard the first time I tried using it. (Like grabbing data from the DB and stuff). W3Schools is definately my number 1 choice to look at codes and stuff. hhmm.. I'm still confused with all me coding that I've tried and its very messy haha!

Very interesting post Danny and congratulations on exceeding your target! Of course I don't host my own site yet. Don't have one to host. ^^; From years of experience in computers and from what I have learned so far, I'm not completely in the dark. Thank you, you answered a few questions for me with this post. I'm using Smultron as well. It's surprise that many software developers view double byte language support as a low or non-priority subject. Of course it would be easy to use a Windows base program, but I want very much to move away from switch back and forth when working. It's one of the reasons I have been using Parallels. However, VMware may be the better application. I just discovered W3 Schools yesterday. Will go back soon to do more exploring.

Uwaa...i saw you site at internet archives and i have to say that there was a large ammount of improvements made. Way to go danny. I totally suck on css so i'm relying on xhtml. I don't know much on php either but i am interested, its complex i know . But i do hope someone can force my brain to work ^_^6

Danny, Yep, 1000 websites on IIS. We had to create close to 60 application pools and split the sites into them. Thankfully the server is beefy enough to handle it...for now (^-^;

Wow. 30k! Now that's a lot. Congrats! I've worked with php before but I've never really been a fan. I don't like mixing php code with the html tags and all. Looks too messy. :D Thanks for the tips, I'll give fireworks a try. I've never really been good with graphics design. heheh btw, do you use relative or absolute positioning in your css?

Interesting post, I had wondered about where/how you host your site as you had mentioned that you get a 100Mbit fiber optic link to your house. So, you don't do any of that load-balancing stuff huh? Have you considered paying for hosting? Learning web dev is not easy, I think it's quite amazing what you've achieved. I'm just starting to use wordpress and start blogging... I always find learning by dissecting existing codes easier and more goal-oriented than reading books. This Friday is my last day at my current place of employment of 5+ years. I'm taking the chance to do the web / blog stuff and aiming to go to grad school in Japan next year. This is what I'm blogging about, my journey to Japan. Clone, I currently host at theplanet.com - I have a few didicated servers there. Load balancing will be implemented soon. Bele, Depends on what I am doing. Absolute can screw things up a bit though.
