アニメ VS アメリカンドラマ

Interesting post Danny, I often have this kind of discussion with some of my classmates from college, most of them say that anime is just cartoons, well it's true but it has enumerous stories and it's fun.
I lived many years watching american series and got tired of it I even watched prison break but I stoped 'cause I'm tired of TV that's why I decided to watch anime again and now I can't stop I'm addicted.
Both ways of good and bad series but at this moment I'm completely focused on anime.

Anime for me definately, I find american television a bit dull sometimes (no offense). Theres alot more interesting things to see in the anime genre. That & I've never been a fan of mainstream media.

Anime for me.  Ever since those stupid realtiy TV shows started appearing on American television, our stuff just hasn't been the same.  Even shows like 24, Lost, Prison Break, etc. are fairly boring to me.

It depends on how well written and imaginative the dramas are. Lost and Prison Break are great examples of that. But I find that as they go on season after season I get bored. This is what happened with the show 24 for me. I can't watch it and I've barely watched Lost. Then there are shows like CSI (all three of them) and Law & Order and the 20,000 derivatives and similar shows that are created after them. These become boring and pretty much repetitive real fast.

One reason why I like watching anime is that even if the show is average, I find it more entertaining then even the best American drama. But then there are few Japanese dramas that I like even better than American ones: Akihabara@DEEP, Nodame Cantabile and Shibuya 15 come to mind.

I don't think I could go with only one, cuz on one hand Dramas like 24 or Battlestar Galactica are very addicting and keep me wanting more, while animes like Gantz or Ergo Proxy are a sheer joy to watch after a rough day at work.

for me, it's less about the medium and more about the story.

Although I tend to prefer Anime, a few Dramas have caught my attention over the years, Most don't seem fantastic enough. To me, Anime has this energetic vibe while American Drama seems toned down.

Being very general, then anime. This is an otaku forum after all, lol. But being more specific, the best of anime and the best of US drama (like Smallville, Battlestar Galactica, etc.) are tough to rank. Might as well ask:  Which do you prefer, Steak or cake? But while we're at it, why not ask: Which do you prefer, Hentai or live-action porn? :)

Personally I just Love anime, as it tends to be able to do things impossible for actors. 

The only thing I have to say is Heroes. It can be so easily turned into an anime I think they should.

I stopped watching TV a few years ago. I got tired of being a slave to the network's schedules, and substandard television programming choices.

I prefer to watch DVDs now where I can watch what I choose and when I want to watch it.

i think both has it great merits.
i try to catch both every week because over all i love a great story. it doesnt really matter whether its anime or america televisions..

Bleg.  Today's American drama kinda sucks.  It's usually the same thing but I could say the same with Anime but there's the kicker: anime can distort things and it'll all be okay.

I don't know, I can never really sit down and watch A.D. because it's just too boring for me.  If there's no action with people flying through the air then I'm not interested. :P

Definitely prefer episodic American Dramas to Anime, been watching anime for so many years so its quite hard to find anime that really pique my interest and amuse me nowadays.

I generally hate US tv, even though I live here and am in fact an American, LOL. The one major exception is "24". I just can't live without Jack Bauer. It really is my 'Soap Opera' I guess. I also like Prison Break. Am I the only one who thinks that if he hadn't broke his brother out of jail all those innocent people wouldn't have been killed along the way? I mean, sheesh, all those deaths because of Linc. :P
I am actually a JDrama junkie and love those to death, I am rewatching Kekkon Dekinai Otoko (with Abe Hiroshi) at the moment. One of the funniest dramas i've ever seen.
Only problem with these dramas is all the cute girls, it's cute girl overload and sometimes I need a break of the mecha-kawaiiness of it all. ;)

JDrama has some of the funniest stuff I've ever seen.  It's so incredibly cheesy at time, but it's genuinely funny.  Unfortunately the guys aren't always quite as pretty as the girls.  It's not really fair.  :(

Once in a blue moon I will start watching an American TV drama.  In my opinion, most American dramas have too many episodes, rely too much on special effects and unoriginal stories.  BSG (Battlestar Galactica) is the only show I have been watching lately, but I'm beginning to feel it's slowly losing it's way.

My fiancee enjoys watching American TV dramas, so now I sit through more of the shows. ^^;  She says the shows help her with her English Conversation.  She is fortunate that everything is new and original for her.  It's fun for me because I get to introduce her to some of my favorites, such as M.A.S.H.

Then again we both watch as much Japanese TV together as American TV.  Usually I follow two or three of the new dramas at the start of each new season.  Of course that depends on the season.  As you know, summer shows are fewer and one spends less time indoors during the summer.  I too need my daily dose of anime.  Just as with dramas, I watch two to three of the new shows each season.

You can take what I say with a grain of salt.  I thought Enterprise was a good show and I will watch shows where the Gundam has a mustache. ^^;  Actually, I'm lying about the last one. ^^;  I just couldn't resist...

Normally I watch LOST, Prison Break and CSI while I practice my magic tricks.

They are pretty darn exciting but not like anime where you have to put 110% into watching it so you won't miss any  fanservice scenes ^_^

here in the philippines, there's a 24hour anime channel here called, Animax, with silly and not so silly voice dubs. it's kinda OK to watch the anime but i like American Drama more than Anime. i like watching CSI, House MD, American Chopper, and Mythbusters.

I personally perfer Anime,but one I am obsessed with one currently ongoing TV show which is the remake of Battlestar Galactica,if you enjoy sci-fi and cool space battles then you should definitely check it out. Am glad to see another person who doesn't see whats so interesting about Lost Danny.

Never did like lost, almost similar to that tom hanks movie that i didn't like either.But to tell you the truth I`m not that much in to anime either most of the anime i liked, i found only by accident, the same with american dramas  , i guess what I`m trying to say is if the show feels old just like everything  that commonly comes out today, both anime and drama then theres no point comparing each to one-another. Oh and Prison Break is Wicked!!!

Give Heroes (NBC drama) a try. Its nothing new for seasoned readers of 'mature' American superhero comics such as those by Mark Millar, Warren Ellis, Michael Straczynski et al. Jeph Loeb, a critically acclaimed comics scribe lent his talents to this drama series. 

Watch out for the Japanese character in the series "Nakamura Hiro", played by American Japanese actor/ILM studios geek Masa Oki. 

"Nakamura Hiro" is an otaku character who loves Dragonball, Jojo Bizzare's Adventures, Final Fantasy and Chronos Trigger. He's got Keroro Gunso figurines placed in his office cubicle.  

In the drama series, he speaks mostly Japanese (with English subtitles) and a smattering of English.

In the show, 'super' Hiro has powers to travel between the space-time continuum.

Yeah well most of the time the series they have here in America or should I say California doesn't seem as interesting as korean dramas I stay away from crappy tv shows like 24 which might I add I do a lot more stuff in 24 hours then them so pretty much as for anime not so much either id rather watch kamen rider or any live action series

American Drama consist of mainly 97 % "CSI: insert name here"; it's boring, grusome and reaffirms to the average joe that he is helpless in a police state. 

Japanese Anime is refreshing and even though some of the plots are reused it is generally with some new twist. I can't get SciFi any where but Anime. I can't compare the two.

The "crime" genre is really in right now.  I can't stand watching those shows, personally.  They're so boring to me, and every episode is just sort of the same stuff over and over again.  My boyfriend loves them though, which drives me nuts.

僕はアニメの方が好きです。
アニメは実写では表現できないことが表現できるところが素晴らしいと思います。
人間やロボットや背景の、形、色彩、動き等々、実写よりも観ていて面白いです。
ただ、ホラーだったら実写かなぁ（アニメでホラーってほとんど見かけませんが）。
僕もアニメは常に摂取していないと、どうにかなってしまいそう(^^;

Gahh - i wish you wouldntve posted that image of prison break! It looks like a major spoiler for us poor brit folks who are several months behind the US!

I dont watch much TV, and I dont watch that much anime, as both can be of poor quality most of the time. 
I love prison break though - its probably my favourite thing on TV right now. I heard 24 is meant to be excellent, but I havent gotten into it yet. I dont like Lost - wastes too much time!

So the answer to the poll - I like both!

How do you get Prison Break over there by the way? What channel?

I voted for anime. 

I actualy do like the new Doctor Who series (I missed Season 2 :( ), but that is British. 

Season 3 of the new series is coming on BBC this month and I can recieve BBC 1 & 2 in the Netherlands. :D

I'm a big fan of both Anime stuff as well as American TV dramas. would say that it depends on whether I feel like having a burger or sushi hahah.

They each have their own merits and are both respectable art forms in their own right. The Japanese tend to be more fantascial and limitless in their storylines, the Americans tend to play with reality in a way that still seems realistic.

recent favourites of mine include: 

anime: Full metal panic, Ghost in the shell TV series, Evangelion (I know, I'm late in this department)

american: Prison break, some episodes of LOST (bear in mind I said some haha), Heroes, etc..

with prison break, i am for sure glued to the box for 1 hour.....

with anime, is barely 30 mins or when you hit some fillers you usually breeze tru them

Absoloutly HATE American Drama. I could never get into 24, Lost, Etc because they were too boring, and I just hate shows like that with an actual plot, etc. CSI (original one) however, I like to watch. Yay Grisham!

I prefer anime way more. I don't need a daily dosage, but I do watch it every so often (3-4 days a week).

I hates american drama just because it never come to an end.  It just drag on and on, like beating a dead horse.  And when it does end, it just end with no real closure to the show.  
I'm having high hope for prison break, i hope it come to an end soon and have a real ending.

I don't think I have met anyone who has watched a decent amount of anime that would pick American drama. The only American drama I watch is heroes. Even watching a bad anime tends to be more enjoyable. If an American drama has a bad story or bad acting there are usually no redeeming qualities like great character designs or a good soundtrack.

I never get much interest in American series. I just have the weird sensation of some lack of originality (story, character development, setting and so on) that would be common to them... (Anti-Hollywood general syndrome?) Or that I skipped and episode and lacked the will to keep on trying to follow. I liked the first season of LOST though... as a try.

Maybe because so many of them are centered on police and political environments and it's simply not my taste.

And like Haruhi Suzumiya would say (anyone disagree?), "Realism is so boring, you should definitely escape from it and find something extraordinary to compensate your dull daily life."

I feel anime fills in wonderfully and the rest is pretty obvious to figure out. I don't watch TV at all anymore, except for professional wrestling/proresu (WWE).

So I'm in 100% anime mode. No wait, I always was, since I have been in that since childhood.

At the moment, I enjoy both Anime and US Drama's. well, 2 US dramas, thats LOST and HEREOS. I started watching LOST and HEREOS which is interesting, UK Drama's got boring. Neighbours, Home and away, the village one... dude, I think I catch whats interesting really.

I like both. I watch anime sometimes but me and my wife watch American Drama all the time especially 24 and Prison Break. You should try watching american shows especially Prison Break, it's them is refreshing plus it doesn't contain that same old story where the good guys always have their way.

Anime all the way. I've tried watching Lost (I really tried for more than 10 episodes), but eventually my interested withered away. I agree with D_Blade, somehow the american dramas seem to be carved out of the same wood. While with anime there's much more variety, it's a miracle how many different people you can present in an anime with a simple change in hairstyle and personality.

I personally like the older series too. Nowadays there are too many terrorist, catastrophe, murderer, tough dudes, hero, soap opera dramas (O.C. and the bunch) going on. Even the Sci-fi seems to lack intelligence  and originality nowadays. I've heard that Lost isn't so interesting anymore as it's taking things on to a too weird level. Haven't watched Galactica apart from few episodes so I can't comment on it.

I haven't watched TV at all lately, apart from Full Metal Alchemist and McGyver and some older Bond movies. Being frustrated about it.

i'll go for both. it's not like we should leave the reality world, though. Plus, dramas such as HEROES and PRISON BREAK do have their own quality. but the rest? i dunno... but yup, a life without anime is a total nono =)

I'll second that Nodame recommendation.  I'm a big fan of the anime, and I loved the live action show as well.  It's a fantastic show for music fans; really loved watching the orchestras play (or at least (maybe) pretend to play) all those great songs.
