"Another interesting thing about McDonalds is that when you walk in, you will often see somebodys bag just left on a seat or a table – it’s the owners way of saying “this is my seat – don’t even think about it.” They walk in, leave their bag where they want to sit and then go to order their food."

on some mcdonalds (mcdo) branches we do that ^^

and mcdo in japan does look like a cafe than your usual average fastfood chain

I agree to that too. Mcdonald's in front of the university will do since some well-to-do have body guards safe enough.

But sleeping? Even if it's in a higher-end place, I only find that in Starbucks for sure :P

Here in Canada you could probably leave stuff at a table. Depends on where you are. In smaller towns you totally do it, larger places like Montreal or Toronto, maybe not.

I've never seen anyone sleeping, although you could probably find people on the floor in abdominal pain from the gut rot that Rotten Ronnies gives you. Is the food that bad over in Japan too?

They really look tired~

I tend not to lose time when eating in a fast-food restaurant. People would not let you sleep if it was crowded anyway.
Starbucks, on the other hand, are designed for people to enjoy some free time, and it's a way better approach to business.

Even if I'm not a fan of McDo (I prefer BK and some others) and rarely eat fast-food anyway, they still make excellent Deli sandwiches here. So I would go there once in a blue moon...

It's always so pleasant that everything old is new again in Japan. I always stay out of Mickey Ds here, get sick every time I eat in one. My fiancee enjoys eating there though. Hmm... I've never asked her what she thinks of マクド here in the U.S.

Anyway, I wouldn't dare sleep in a Mickey Ds here in the states or leave anything unattended on a table. Heck, you probably would be robbed and then killed because you didn't have enough money.

Maybe it's included in the Japanese genome.  That ability to sleep anywhere comfortably, and wake up at the right time. ^^;

You know, the last time I ever ate at McDonald's was when I was like 14 or so yrs old. Now, from my work place, I usually eat at McDonald's for the $1 deal. I noticed recently that many hobos bombard the place. There's hobos just coming in and sitting down. One hobo just sat there and slept. I don't think Japan has it as bad as N.Y McDonald's. Their at least clean, and not hobos. I ain't eating in McDonald's again.

There is no way to sleep in McDo in France. As for UK, the worst thing would happen to you and your belonging. One custom here, is that when you need to go to toilets in a town where there are no public toilets, you go to McDo. It is so usual that in Paris there is a code to enter toilets. This code is given on your purchase receipt....
BTW, When I was in Taipei, I noticed that this toilet custom was the same with taiwanese !

I have never seen people sleeping in MC yet, and I hope they won't because their soul will be stolen by the evil McDonald. I have seen people study in small not chain food places around my college and that is very common. I mean book stores now have coffee shops and everything.

I often notice salarymen taking power naps at Excelsior or Starbucks during lunchtime. Even more than people sleeping in restaurants, though, I've seen lots of people who crash in internet cafes.

Most are among the working poor, not enough money to afford a home, but at least enough that they don't have to sleep on the street. They come to the cafes since the all-night rate is pretty cheap, they get a comfy chair, and they can grab a quick shower and cup of coffee in the morning before they head out.

You can usually spot them because they come into the cafe with a really big bag or suitcase, although some of the are clean cut enough that they don't immediately stand out as being homeless.

Other than that, occasionally guys come stumbling in because they're drunk or missed the last train, and the net cafe is cheaper than a hotel.

Also, leaving bags anywhere alone here is just stupid... you'd most probably get robbed (like in Hackney).

People also don't study on McD's here... mainly because it's kinda rare to see people studying out in the open... or anywhere else for that matter. But McD's are usually noisy places with tons of uneducated kids with moronic obese parents... which is just sad.
