All i can say is that, if u want a real good massage of any type. go to china.

Danny, don't suppose u got a figure of you & the wife made @ that place, did ya? As I recall, some ppl here requested your figure ^^;
Congrats to your cousin and her hubby. They look very happy.

Wonder if I'll like it over there, but I'll mostly be in the newer urban areas. People keep telling me to watchout for trouble. It doesn't look very 'troublesome' to me, and trust me I've seem my share of it.

I remember being asked by a stranger if I wanted any girls (Paid sex) while with a group of friends over at Nanjing road (We were on a study trip).
Just for laughs, I kindly declined and replied "Do you have men instead" in which he gave an answer which left me stunned for a while "Yes we have".
I smiled, declined again and quickly got out of there!

The Huangpu River area is a absolutely lovely place. I really love the illuminations from the buildings from both sides.

I see some Yu Tiao(fried dough) in the deep fried goodies picture :)

Nice cousin!

Finally a post about 上海, was waiting for it seeing as I'm Canadian/Shanghainese. Actually planning to visit in May after my exams are done and was wondering how it looked now, haven't gone back in 7 or 8 years. Good to see it's a lot more modernized from what I can remember. Was actually expecting some pictures of the older style buildings with the temples, but I guess you didn't visit any of the tourist places. So are there any otaku related places to visit in Shanghai?

There's no ero publications because the government forbids it, they also block all adult-oriented sites on the internet.

Food looks very yummy, kind of curious to how much it costed in RMB. I know that fast food places like KFC and Micky Ds are still about the same price as here.

I think the milk thing is quite true, but you don't have to be a fan of milk to like eyes....lol

PS. congrats on your cousin's marriage and best wishes to them.

LOL! That's a very interesting piece of information. Yea, I too like Yu Tiao (or Yau Cha Kwai in cantonese), but it's very oily and greasy. I think I gained 10 pounds from my last trip to China.

LOL @ open source anime dvds. You don't need to go to Shanghai for that, you can find everything you need at Pacific Mall.

Damnit, I can't wait to go back this summer. I'll be sure to take plenty of pictures and post them.

I went to China last summer for vacation, but unfortunately on a crummy tour, so I couldn't stay anywhere very long. (The whole tour was like "OH HAY look at this place take a picture okay and now let's go!") Shanghai is very beautiful at night though. Wish I could have stayed a little longer.

I did come across some funky products though. I remember Pokemon Shineygold in particular. The front of the box had a bird from some other RPG (can't remember which one), while the back had the whole "this seal is your assurance that this is an officially licensed product by nintendo" when there was no seal to be found.

Also, congrats to your cousin and her husband!

Nice article, I'd love to visit Shanghai one day.

I went to Hong Kong a couple of years ago, DVDs were really cheap compared to Western prices, I'm not sure if they were open source or just cheap.

I did get an open source Paul Frank watch for about 5 USD though. I also found a market store selling open source Lego!!!

Can you do a "week in South Korea" - I'd love to visit it some day as not many tourists go there compared to China.

It is nice to see my hometown being featured. I didn't like it that much when I lived there, but now when I visit it, I always thought about what it would be like if I never left it.

The buildings that I was used to see were no longer there, the school I went destroyed, the people I knew gone. It seems the things from my past are all destroyed.

I still miss the food there, especially the pancake looking thing. Most of the food preparation cart looking things are run by people not from Shanghai, from the picture, it seems it might have become popular.

Ahh Shanghai, how can I miss you so if I cannot call you home?

Yea I like 燒肉 too. Glad that we have something in common in that department :).

And as for the thunder noises from falling bamboos around construction areas, it's relatively common even in Hong Kong. People simply just stay away from the area, mainly because of the noise and the dust they produce.

And last but not least, congratualtions for your cousin.

"Nanjing road: A nice place to relax" Lol ! When I went in Shanghai, I stayed in a hotel along Nanjing Road, right next to a huge TV screen. This thing kept playing the same advertising over and over again, day and night. The tune drove me crazy ! I would add that Nanjing Road can be very crowed and busy... In summer actually, maybe not in winter ^^

On the other hand, I agree with you, Danny. I really felt Shanghai has a real "vibe". Especially in comparison to Beijing which is bigger, more cultural but more plain...

China has never been on my visit list but it does look very interesting- Shanghai looks very bustling and I bet within a couple of years China will be totally self sufficient (if it isn't already) before the USA! Hope we do that kind of thing soon....

Last time I went to Shanghai (summer '06) we went to this place I like to call the "Pirate Market" because 99.999% of the stuff sold there is pirated brand names. They always jack the price up too, but you can barter it down to about 15% of what they originally said haha. Brought all of it back to the States no problem. Well, actually Hong Kong, then the States. I guess they have some kind of issue with that in Japan?
