Is sad!
When i was child, i don't need to worry about to not been safe in my school.
In Venezuela, since long time ago, teachers can't punish physicaly to the students.
Here, we have laws to protect child and teenagers, and that's include bad treatment by teachers to the childs.

I always read that japanese students are too stressed. Facts like this make me clear about why they are stressed.

In certain schools of SG you can get caned for stuff like not tucking in your shirt.
And I was a victim of it.
In my current school, every offense can be filed under the name of defiance.

the title of this blog post was misleading danny, it's more centered around capital punishment than education. i kind of expected you to discuss about the education material that they teach in japanese schools. you know, that whole controversial thing about altering some textbook information to make japan look good, especially history...etc. in any case, about capital punishment, i don't think it was necessary for the teacher to hit the student across the face, i'm sure it got the point across, but the teacher was setting a bad example in front of the class with the use of violence. i think it would've been much better if the student was punished with extra homework, or detention, or got sent to the principal's office.

When I was in primary school, all the students in my class got canned at least once almost everyday for 3 years. We were canned for every single questions we did wrongly. I didn't feel anything anymore on the final year. Caning is common in chinese schools but not in national schools.

I feel that physical violence has no use at all. In fact, it will only make things worse. I feel that most of the time it's the fault of the teacher that students don't pay attention. Try to make your classes enjoyable. Students will respect you in this way.

Alast... it's not true... sorry to burst your bubbles guys... Those who never hand in homework, the teachers would make the students stand or call their parents... In the most extreme case, when a student bullies, breaks school property or shoplifts, that student could be caned or even suspended... Most schools in Singapore are kinda stict...

danny, time have changed. teachers in singapore seldom use the cane anymore.

nowadays parent are more doting on their children and will file a complain if their kids are mistreated (be it petty little things or physically abused)

if a student got caught reading a manga here, the teacher will most probably confiscate the manga. if she/he is nice/in a good mood, will return it to you after class after a apology.

if she/he is the mean type, you might never see your manga again.

I haven't seen that degree of violence, but I have seen a couple of the teachers rough-around some of the students who actively leave the classroom in the middle of the lesson to wander the halls. Mostly seems to be pushing them around, which I still view with trepidation, but as an ALT, I'm really not allowed to intervene.

As for me, I once pushed back a kid who was actively trying to grab my privates, and I felt off about it afterward (and not just because of being violated in class). So I guess I'm really not cut out to deliver that kind of physical punishment anyways.

I was "beaten" sometimes from my elementary school teacher for bad behavior. Sometimes kids need a slap or two to put them in their places or to listen to the orders of the teacher. If a teacher slapped a son of mine I would to the school and ask why he/she did it but wouldn't involve the cops in it.

Well, I think that teachers are not to hit a child no matter what but leave it to the parents.

Children sometimes need to be beaten with a slap on the bottom to learn a lesson that they never forget like me... my dad just beated me to death or something that I am who I am today *twitch*

Anyways, a slap + nose bleed, if I was that kid, I'd sue'd that teacher for assault!

well in USA you can't use physical force in school, but belarus its less controlled and more tolerated. It mostly happens in lower classes since a 10th grader can answer back probably hehe. I do not think this is unnecessary to use force. Force never solves anything so why should it make student study better or pay attention more. Perhaps that teacher should have rethought his class since its so boring student reads mana hahaha

Yah, I actually think that some kids/teens need to get smacked across the face a few times. They're just getting so much ruder now a days that it just makes you wonder what the parents/world is thinking. The teens/pre-teens today have become such brats, that they should be put into the category of "kids". I think some countries protect their kids too much from the wrong things. I mean, i understand the "Child abuse protection" and all those that will get the kid messed up, but things such as giving them more responsibility, and giving the teachers a bit more rights on educating kids on how to behave should not be stopped. Especially since monst parents are working pretty much 24/7 and don't have the time to educate their kids anymore.
(Hopefully I made sense and didn't offend anyone)

@Boris Said "[The use of] Force never solves anything"

I hate it break it to you but the proper use of force has solved a lot of things. The proper use of force has stopped countless act of violence and murders. When the police or someone steps in to stop a beating, force prevents someone from being injured or killed. There are countless other scenarios that I could come up with but I am sure you get my point.

Sorry about going off like that but the use of a phrase like that is one of my pet peeves.

Oh and don't forget proper use of The Force stopped Darth Vader and The Empire. ^-^

I think that slapping or hitting kids is pretty bad. its going to teach the kids that it is all right to hit, and that's not supposed to be a good thing because it might cause more bullying and they might think its alright to hit to hit other kids teachers or fight back. teachers should just send a note to the parent that will normally shut the kid up or make them call the parent right there and then. its what I believe, but violence shouldn't be an option.

Caning (usually followed by a week of in house suspension from school) is the only for those who did a serious offense outside of school and usually it deals with things such as

-Getting into "gang" fights
or
-Destroying public property

For those minor offenses, teachers usually asks the parents over and speak with them.

I don't really see the reason to get physical over anything serious, after all the teacher can just confiscate the item and call the parents, that should do the trick.

You won't get away with anything here in the USA. I once had a teacher throw a dry erase marker at my back to make me put my head up, and I had him practically begging me for forgiveness after class because he was afraid I was gonna report it. Truth was I really didn't care and the last thing I was thinking at the time was reporting it. I was actually really surprised he came up to me the way he did.

The proper application of force can be necessary to solve a problem. So, since if any teacher ever hit my kid(which I dont have) to show them that they were doing something that the teacher disliked, then I think it only fitting I get to hit the teacher. My kid bleeds, they bleed. Fitting, no? Now, if they instead feel it necessary to scold the kid, and take the offending material away.. then I cant really see a problem with that. Hitting a kid, making them bleed ... I dont see how this is the action of a responsible adult. Proper application of force? No. Violence can actually (and unfortunetly) be a solution, but not on children. Bastards... and I dont mean you FatBastard. lol.

Teachers shouldn't resort to doing something physical and violent as a form of punishment. The students themselves must understand their wrong doings and correct over it. Slapping doesn't help to make them learn after all. They're just making things worse, damaging their relationships well.

Secondary schools here are still holding onto public caning for serious offense such as playing truancy, smoking, doing funny things with your girlfriend/boyfriend in public with uniform on.

For minor offense, students are only held for detentions, standing on chair and such.

I got a 2 hour detention for reading my Lucky Star volume 4 manga in class lol.

I hear grades don't really matter in Japan and the kids just pass on to the next level regardless of their final grade. That's pretty bad, I know a kid in my class did that and he got warned multiple times, never slapped though. Manga is a big hit amongst schools now and you will see more than a few open during break. Slapping shouldn't be done but the kid probably does more than read manga in class to get a nice slap.

I'd link that discussion to the ones on the mad kicker (The train one) and bullying.

Like you could have guessed, I feel that there are other ways to manage stress, anger and frustration.
Slapping a scholar doesn't solve anything. On the contrary it makes the receiver more receptive to negative stimuli and a wish for vengeance.

I am sure there was some lack of communication and many negative interactions prior to that event. I know that I never wanted to be a teacher because of the possibility for that kind of conflicts to arise but I also wonder why there is no code on conflict management and diplomacy in education.

I tend to agree with Maya about the fact that kids and adolescents those days are much more difficult to handle and that certain laws are way to permissive (The heck why can't parents spank their children without getting filed for abusiveness?), however I'd like to add that it is not an absolute thing and that only adequate communication and adapted sanctions work. Violence is easy and very soothing in the short run (at least for the one dealing it), but only feeds a negative spiral that can lead to murder, etc.

Problematic behavior is often a revealer of a much deeper emotional or social problem (surely what happened to this kid) and that teacher must had stress and troubles he/she couldn't take care of anymore (he/she surely released all the negative energy at once).

I'd also add that if I didn't have the proper support when I was younger, I sure would have turned heavily postal a few number of times (But only against the ones that deserved it).

Well, during my four months of teaching here, I have yet to see the cliched 'standing in the hallways holding buckets of water' punishment.

If there are is a troublesome student in class, I can't do very much and it is up to the JTE (Japanese Teacher of English) or the Homeroom teacher in elementary school to maintain discipline during class. There have been some student who are extremely disruptive during class and the JTE would just either ignore the student or tell him to be quiet, which the student would comply but then start making noise again.

I never probed into how my school discipline their kids, after all, I have only been there for a few months. From what I hear, they take a very indirect approach as you would expect from people here. I am told that first the Homeroom teacher is notified and they talk with the student in question. Then they may have a session where class is spoken to by the Principal or level head. At the same time, the homeroom teacher may contact the parents and then decide further action from there. Yes it is a very indirect approach, and sometimes it can be very frustrating to teach with a disruptive student but as an ALT, I cannot do very much.

And to answer your question, yes, students in Singapore get the cane. I studied there for middle school for 3 years and there have been a few times where students have gotten caned in front of the whole school at assembly. After a few stroke (which by the way is very very painful) the student is given an opportunity to repent and apologise to the school for his actions (which they always take. Who wants to get caned even more?)

bullying by teachers is not common here.

the teachers are not given any right to do so. strictly speaking, if you just insult a student, the teacher would be checked on days later.

such cases have happened, and I myself am a victim of a teacher being biased against me, though I did nothing wrong.. well I dont think punishment is far, nor do I think teachers have any right to bully u, be it physically or emotionally, since they are just people who are allowed to teach you stuff.

I think it is the responsibility of the teacher and the parents to keep a child in check. The child is given to the teacher to learn about accepted moral and educational standards of the area. If it is accepted to do corporal punishment or use the force of peer pressure to keep the child in line. I think it depends what is deemed acceptable on what the parents want the teacher does to their child.

I remember that the teachers had the option to beat the butts of naughty boys and suspensions for just about any infraction. I saw little delinquency here in my little county, but people like to beat little kids in line like I was. There is no detention or time outs for punishment here. Just suspension, beating or expelling.

Here physical punishment in schools is so normal you dont even here about it in the media especially in primary schools
but in highschools it doesn't happen a lot because if a teacher did it at my school he would probably get his ass kicked otside school as a matter of fact the only cases of violence in schools we here about in the media here are about teachers that got theyr ass kicked buy angry students

hmmm actually, the cane is used more rarely here in S'pore as time passes by, but it's still the "traditional" form of punishment for countries like Malaysia.

was a victim of teacher's biasness too. once got my lips scotch-taped in pri school because the guy beside me talked :X

oh btw, Danny-san, I've added your feed and link :D

Teachers hardly ever get physical here, but it happens.
Though i know atleast two people who whent postal on their teacher one of the cases it wasnt so bad i think he just slapped back or twisted his arm, but the ohter case the guy picked up a chair and smacked the teacher with it, causing the loss of several teeths (this student was ofcourse expelled and had to do some therapy)

Hitting a child in any situation where they are not directly threatening you is in my eyes totaly unjustified.
They could just take the manga off him.
As far as im concerned physical punishment doest work anyway as it more than likly will strengthen the resolve of that student against doing what the teacher wants in future.

Lead by example is what I say.

I've never been slapped in the face as far as I remember. But in Madagascar, when you don't behave well in class, 90% of the time, don't be surprised if the teacher slap you on the wrist or tell you to kneel till the lesson ends. Haha! It's alright I think, next time you'll think twice. :D

Physical punishment in Malaysia is limited only to guys but might be changed to include girls as well in the future.
as for punishments i have received. it includes being caned, having my ear twisted really hard, slapped around the face, extra laps during P.E. standing on chairs/tables for hours, having my mouth duct-taped, detention and many more which i do not want to list.

Back in Vietnam, when I was still in elementary school, I got slap or get cane when I was being a "bad boy" -.-
Honestly, I feel punishment like that could help but it is just my opinion.

I dont much in my country but only the teacher get slap by the parent. Only China will definitely do that and not to mention a strict education calling the children cleaning the window outside without any safety on it. You may even expect teacher throwing a chair toward if hey have too.

Teachers shouldn't slap students, they should leave it to the executioners...

Yeah, students in Singapore DO get the cane. Unlucky if your principal heads the karate club of the school. Good thing I've never been caned, and I sure as hell don't intend to break that record. Prisoners get caned too; some people want that banned as they think it's inhumane. Like killing lifestock is humane.

teachers used to be so strict here way back in the 80s, they used to hit the students with bamboo sticks at the legs for being noisy, for every wrong answer in quizes, etc... they also made students do squats, but now the students/parents have the right to complain to authorities if they feel that they were violated

There are two means of motivation for kids...reward and punishment. You either do the right thing because it will get you rewarded(either a prize or praise) or you do it out of fear. I remember that well from my childhood. I had to have a reason to do what I was supposed to.

And I will say there are some kids out there today that could use a good smack. However, I wouldn't want that sort of punishment administered by anyone else including teachers. Just because you don't know how far they'll go. Call the parent and let them administer the walloping. But then most parents won't do anything so it's a catch 22. If the parents actually did anything to keep their kids in line there wouldn't be a problem in the first place. This is why I wouldn't be a teacher. I wouldn't want to deal with a bunch of little brats that are out of control and parents that don't care. Not to mention being watched like a hawk. Step out of line and end up under investigation....too much BS and not enough pay.

Oh....and I was homeschooled for a few years....and you can bet there was the threat of capital punishment. But thats okay. I'd have taken a slap across the face as opposed to a lecture from my father any day 9_9

Punishment by teachers is forbidden since about 30 years now here. It's ok like that but some of the students around here really need a slap in the face, they're so disrespectful they shouldn't even be allowed to go to school...

I remember back when i was a 5 year old kid in Philippines, that i tried to stand out of the group...

and ended up getting punished for that. The teacher set up a fitting punishment for me as an example for the whole class. It wasn't funny, if i think about it now.

And i went to a Christian school (Don Bosco Private Academy).

News like this makes me mad and brings some bad memories about school life back then.

I live in Norway and here, they protect the rights of the kids, and physical punishment is illegal & punishable under law.

If the teacher did that in school, he would be pretty much jailed and stripped of his teaching profession.

Thank the gods i spent my best school years here in cold, old Norway rather in Philippines.

just my 2 cents.

I think it's not necessery but...I think it should be allowed if the teacher tells the student to stop doing something for the 20th time without any effects. In some extreme cases teachers should be allowed to take upon some physical actions for example when the student is bullying someone
