Ah, no. There arent freelance that I have ever heard about. The only drawback to joining the army to pilot a gundam, is it would probably end up like the army or the airforce now. A bunch of people want to fly jets, and most of them sit around doing other things. The very lucky few actually get to fly. We can all dream though.

I dont know how far off these are. Imagine being the generation that sees this enormous machines come to life. We have all the available technology, screens, cameras, lasers, and firepower. Carbon science is advancing and stronger and stronger armors are being developed all the time. I always wondered why advancement has not proceeded in this area.

Yes, I'm interested in piloting a yellow horned, multicolored machine with beamspam capabilities and hoping to meet a mask rival in the battlefield piloting a red-colored machine that went 3 times faster than usual ones. Problem is, I lack the qualification of looking rather effeminate as well as lacking the necessary personality of being a whiny, brooding, unstable, emotional young man.

Nah joining the army they probably would give you some lousy gundams to pilot.

Based on my gundam watching experience, you should start searching for some radical organization that wants to save the world and stop the war with their 4 awesome gundams.

Mobile suits are not just a dream...We should remember that almost all the modern technologies we see and feel today are products of mans incredible imagination...from the Da Vinci's contraptions, to Star trek's gizmos. There is an idea, I have no doubt it will become a realization in the not so distant future or should I say that it's already being done and existing but we just don't know anything about it for now.

However if there be a viable gundam-like machine, I would join the underdogs and maintain their stubborn ideology.

Just joining the army will not exactly get you a gundam. You will need an extraordinary amount of trust before they put something worth millions (or billions) of dollars into your hands. The problem is, human life is not worth that much. I love the idea of having gundams, but it scares me enough how we have problems with nuclear weapons already.

A mobile suit is way too tall for operations and taking cover from strikes, not to mention too clumsy to walk on its own and may cause more destructions than defending Tokyo...
Wanzers amd labors are more likely to be realize because their are smaller, faster and lighter, suit for urban combat.

As awesome as it would be, unlikely we'll get anything like a Gundam in terms of today's warfare.

Closest thing we "could" get is a walker, and even then they'd be a problem in nearly every field from maintenance to urban survivability.

I don't think humanoid war machines will be realised until there's a major change in the way warfare operates

I think the ministry chose to focus on gundams because it has been around for a long time and is probably better known compared to other mechas.

Personally, I think creating a gundam for warfare is still a far off dream. I doubt it's possible to make an effective gundam with our technology right now. It'll just be a giant walking target if it can't be as mobile as gundams from zeta and onwards. Maybe a hundred of years from now might be possible(alas gundam 00).

Ken:

Your point about needing trust to operate something that costs millions is true to a point. I've been in the Army for a year and a half, and yet my job in my unit is to drive an M3A2 Bradley Cavalry Fighting Vehicle. They cost about 3.2 million dollars each. And I've only been in the Army for a year and a half - I have friends assigned to Bradleys who have been in less time than I have.

An F-16 costs about $19 million each and the newest pilots have only been in the Air Force for maybe a year, year and a half.

Really, it's less about trust in the person themselves and more a trust in the training they've received. I'd only driven a Bradley three times in my advanced training before I got to my unit. An F-16 pilot goes through about a year of training before he or she gets to their unit - but that's because an F-16 is so much more complex than a Bradley.

One engineering issue with a real life gundam would be the power source batteries will not make the cut the closest practical power source I can think of would be either a gas turbine or large diesel engine or a non conventional option a mono propellant H2O2 gas generator like in the vanderbilt prosthetic arm.
http://www.vanderbilt.edu/news/releases/2007/8/20/rocket-powered-mechanical-arm-could-revolutionize-prosthetics
Though in theory the leg joints could be made more robust then the links in a track but it also would be more difficult to repair in the field.

interesting that the Ministry of Defense is taking serious on bipedal mechs but the astronomical costs on R&D, building and maintenance.

@Membrane

we might not have the sufficient power source to power advance personnel units but there has been some advancement in nuclear fusion research and maybe sometime in the future human could develop mobile fusion reactors that could power these war machines

Another solution might be the ultra compact fission reactors being developed by nasa for powering a manned mission to mars.
If you can generate 6 megawatts of power for the vasimr rockets you can travel to mars in less then 45 days.
Some of the concepts such as the Israeli Am242 reactor might be able to power a gundam.

i just want to remind that we can not be 100% sure that a gundam can not be of any use in the battlefield because we have seen this in the past with the tank that was thought to be to large and vulnarable yet the tank has proven it self to be a wonderfull instrument of warfare samething for the airplane when in WW1 genarals beleived that besides recon missions the plane can not do much in the battlefild so only time would tell us if it would be a success or a failure
