I don't know what would my life would be without internet.

Anime, information, blogs, anime music and free software downloading and of course instant messenging and e-mailing are daily activities.

5 hours per day seem fine to me, when of course I have free time.
It may sound a bit sad to the ear, but I don't really know what socializing means. I've tried, but it's difficult to find someone you can fully trust. I tend to express my feelings fully only via interposed screens.
I don't truly understand how people can have fun going outside and drink until they are wasted, etc., as it is something foreign to me.

This may have much improved over the years, but I am still cold in some way.
So to say, internet is an integral part of my current life and living abroad is not always fun. I'm still adapting and learning everyday though.

Sorry for being a bit depressive today. I hope to be more cheerful next time. Thanks for reading.

And yes Danny, ADSL and other high-speed lines + wireless sure have been awesome improvements in terms of internet access.
I never want to relive the "56k nightmare" ever again.

Internet has its pros and cons, as for everything else, and I see you began soon too in terms of naughty stuff.

Another great inspirational post, Danny! You're definitely having fun. Likewise for me, even though HTML and PHP is only a hobby, I wouldn't be where I am today, both technically and artistically, without my interest in computers and internet...

The only thing I'd add is that "regret" is relative too. Many confuse joy and greed. So if anime and manga are reflections of life, we should look for the fun and joy in the "little" things as well as strive for the "big" things. Here again, "big" is relative too...

In other words, even an average wage-earner, navigating his or her ups and downs, can find greater fulfillment in life or art or religion or family than the most successful of executives.

I wish your ongoing success! =)

I don't know how I would live without the internet. Many people say this, but without so much meaning as when I say it.

My entire life revolves around the internet. When I'm not web programming or looking around for new developments in useful scripts I'm reaserching stuff on wikipedia or taking part in the expansive blogotubes. :P

Seriously though--I spend between 3 to 6 hours a day just surfing around on Wikipedia. It's endlessly fascinating reading about Hadron collisions and other Quantum Theory stuff or about the history of the internet.

earlier this year there was a richter 7.1 magnitude earthquake that struck the southern coast of taiwan which caused major outages of international connectivity due to multiple submarine cable failures.

during this period, internet speed in the region was very slow. local online community here made quite a big fuss over it.

i think they are insensitive. instead of being concern of the aftermath of the quake, they are more concern of their internet speed.

just prove to show how not only the younger generation can't live without the internet, they want fast speed as well.

D_Blade, thanks for depressing me. j/k. I dont think there is anything wrong with your social skills, I think you are just a little hard on yourself.

Gordon, I know what you mean. I dont think people realize how lucky they are to live in this day and age. I grew up without the internet, but I dont feel like I missed anything. Hell, I didnt get a cell phone until I was 18, or a tv in my room for that matter!

I think its important in life to not lose your connection with the world around you, take Danny for example, he always goes to functions, meets new people, goes on trips. You can experience a lot online, but you should seek knowledge and understanding in the world around you also.

I agree so much, time is short use it to it's fullest. I too think to the past and regret the time that I feel I wasted. With a return to college for a second degree I find my time so limited which is a new source of frustration for me. I can be dangerously obsessive about being productive. I find myself chastising myself for not being productive all the time. Probably my number one weakness, not feeling comfortable with just fooling around.

My so called "free time" is very important to me since it's my most productive time. I spend time learning more Nihongo, increasing my computer and Internet knowledge and having a little fun too. It's why visiting your site and others is important to me. I forgot how I'm never satisfied with just doing assigned class work and learning just what a professor requires of me.

Anyway, yes I too spend a large amount of time on-line.  Usually from around 5 or 6 am to often midnight or 2 am.  My work and college studies dictate it.  Yes I do take breaks for meals and to just get away from the Mac from time to time.  You know how it is, the harder one works the harder one must play.  Something else I'm not getting to do lately and paying for it too. ^^;

You are so right, life is much better and has changed so much for me too having the Internet. If used correctly, it can make the world a much better place. Younger people are so lucky that they can talk and share with people from all over the world at such early ages.

Edward,
I absolutely agree with u...
I always somehow felt time is being wasted by me and even though I'm fully aware of it I just can't resist wasting it away...
by "wasting", i mean not using it efficiently and "correctly"...
now i'm in med school my sense of reponsibility has been growing b/c i realize that i'm about to achieving my dream by working extremely hard to a degree that out-of-school social life has become so scarce and so valuable...
You guys are right about the Internet...and like everything else, it's a double-bladed knife, it can help ALOT, but it could be destructive if not used properly...same goes with time management for sure.

I gotta admit, the internet is pretty damn useful. When my modem conks out (it does it often) i panic!
Its so much more convenient doing a quick google search for reference images or the answer to a question - no matter how complicated. Back in the old days, you had to go to a library.
Plus, the convenience and efficiency of online shopping is superb. Ive brought things on the net that i would have NEVER anywhere else.

I do find myself getting sucked into it too much though. I regularly participate on 2 forums, facebook, and check about 6 blogs every day. This takes up a lot of my time each day, when i could be doing more productive things like freelance work, personal work, or general self improvement like excercise or learning japanese properly.

Socialising on MSN took up tons of my time so i uninstalled it a year or so ago. It seems i have filled that gap with forums and the all-consuming facebook :-/

I voted 10 to 15 hours, but maybe I spend more than that.
I just bought a very expensive laptop just so that I can use it on trips.
I travel regularly every couple of weeks to attend a game development course.
Most of the news I read from my RSS reader, usually 200+ articles a day (though I get lots of repeated stuff).

After I started the game development course, I came back in touch with the gaming industry and stuff... so I'm playing a lot lately.
When I was a kid, I played tons of games several hours a day. But I switched it to movies and other hobbies until I started my course.

But anyways, like Danny said, I don't know how much I would know, or what I would be today without the Internet.

I remember first acessing it through a local BBS, IRC only, with a US Robotics 9600 baud modem, on Win3.11.

Just for starters, I probably wouldn't know anime too much. I wouldn't have gotten into japanese culture even though I'm japanese decendant. I wouldn't have gotten into reading books. Wouldn't have graduated in Computer Science. Wouldn't know english language the way I know today. And that's only for starters...

I agree with you that internet is a great source of knowledge. I remember when i was a kid i had plenty of questions in a very wide range of topics. But my parents didnt answer many of them (i dont blame they just behaved like any other normal parent), and as a little kid i didnt know where to find information. Of course i read books, but my oppurtunities were still limited. Plus my native language is hungarian. Of course i dont have problem with it, but i had to admit that many information can only be found in english. But in english everything can be found. And although i understand common english it would likely happen that i dont understand difficult texts, which are about some deep scientific topic (i refer those which would be hard to understand in hungarian). And if i had had native understanding in english as a little kid, that would have been really great.

I actually love to read comments and information on various things on the internet. Sure, I download the eyecandy items too, but I also love reading about other's opinions on said things or anything. I really loved an article on the PS2 game ICO, which went on for over 1000 words.

So, I like reading essays on things that really interest me, as well as reading what people thought of certain figures and such. I like forums for this too, though sometimes they don't really have any mature comments so I have to go elsewhere...

Anyway, I spend most of the time actually learning, though a lot of my learning comes from my own search through help files on the PC or just finding out through trial and error. Most of what I know is the latter - I just seem to know how to work things through naturally without instruction books or such. A talent I guess, though sometimes I seek the help file to just speed up the process...

When I don't have school I'm easily more than 15 hours online. I kinda developped a pattern in what I do online. First I check my mail, then read the latest car news, then pay a visit to AnimePaper.net, then Figure.FM, then Danny Choo's blog and many more stuff (deviantART, Demonoid, Google, etc.). So yeah, internet is an important part of my life. Even though I got internet in my house only 2 years ago, I can't live without it anymore. Without internet I wouldn't had any figures. ^^
