Walk along any urban district in Tokyo and you will see telephone/electric wires spanning the sky.

I guess this could be because of the amount of earthquakes we get here and ease/cost of maintenance.
When we moved into our house, the telephone company had to climb up one of these poles and pull the telephone and optic fibre to our house from these wires - the guy done it in no time.

One thing annoying about these wires is that crows sit on them and make such a racket.

Its not like this everywhere though - you hardly notice any in busy districts like Shinjuku or Shibuya for example.

...Compared to the sky outside my house back in the UK.
While the sky is free from a web of wires, the roads of London always seemed to be dug up by British Telecom to fix or install stuff. Never ending roadworks.
I personally prefer a sky full of wires than roadworks that go on forever (that cause traffic jams).

BTW, Do you know why there are many pits in UK roads? Its because they use newspaper as fillings - I have seen road workers in the UK fill in holes with newspaper and then lay tar on top!

I would prefer a sky of wires, although they will run those said wires underground here in the USA (less earthquake prone). There is always roadwork being done here and traffic jams are a nightmare.

Strange, only the wires that we see in the sky mostly are electric power ones even they're very few cause most of them are under the ground which would be almost impossible in Japan due to the constant seismic activity.

The skies here are clean of wires. We do have roadworks but the workers do their thing quick and fast.

A sky with webs of wires would be coulld as well. A nice contrast ^^;

Eh. the sky were I live is empty...plus I live out of town >.>. and its about the same in-town.
But the roadwork dudes take for ever and are stupid and suck at maintaining things..HATE THEM!!!

btw I found you site on a google search. lots of gundam info. which is cool.

Wonderful photos, especially the dusk ones. You get to see that much wires here in Melbourne, there's a few wheere trams are but those feel like webs that cover the whole street.

I dunno if I prefer underground vs suspended wires...

Great shots, no wires in the sky here, even though we do have our share of seismic activity. Roadword is efficient, they seem to be be building new roads constantly.

I guess I take for granted the area I live in since I don't have to be bothered by electic poles or lines and construction.

When I wake up I'm surrounded by mountains, of course it's hell here when it snows. So I've got it bad sometimes too.

Untidy as these wires may might I really like the way they look, its something uniquely Tokyo-esque, ala Makoto Shinkai style. I must have spend a fair share of my time photographing them when I first got here, and still do from time to time. There's an artist at Design Fiesta everytime that actually specialize on monochrome prints of these intersecting cables.

This really look disorganized. I prefer underground cables myself.
When you want to look at the sky and reflect on your life and soon see this huge network of cables, don't you feel a bit depressed?

I know that constant roadworks are also a major pain in the rear... Well, they should do it correctly once and for all and that should solve it neatly.
I snickered when I read about the newspapers part... Lazy bums. At least they won't end unemployed this way.

Don't complain about crows, they are sacred animals in the Shintoist beliefs . As long as they don't poop on you like vulgar pigeons (sorry if you're eating), it is all right, somehow ;)

Antabax, I guess it is more about the cellphone relay antennas and really high electric cables linked to electric pylons.

But that is a good question that intrigues me too.

I actually really like the wires. Gives the environment a layered look, and i like the detail on them. I took a few photos of electric cable masts when i went to japan - i couldnt believe how detailed, complicated and 'dense' they were compared to any others ive seen.
Wouldnt fancy being an electrician over there....

no different here ^^

residential areas here are full of wires in the skyline. it may be an eyesore but it saves time and money for the company and it avoids traffic jams in the area and besides, the land here is not that deep and thick...

i wouldn't mind wires in the skyline here...in fact, i kinda like it 'coz from what i see it shows the progress economically and technologically of an area ^^

eyesore or not, i kinda like it ^^

I'm not sure why the cabling in Japan is such a mess. There is no reason for it, even in densely populated areas on earthquake zones. Go look at Los Angeles, which is nearly as earthquake prone and you simply don't see cabling issues as bad as this.

Yes, it is harder to get cable runs but IMO it is worth it.

The picture in the link below is the view out the back of my InLaws home in Hadano. What a beautiful view. Such a lovely power line.

My wife is Okinawan, and the area around her parents home in Naha is just like this. Mainly it is because there is no room to put these wires underground and would take far too long to just tie up traffic.

At first it annoyed me, all those wires. But after a while you get used to it.
They also have these special tubes to put them into the ground for counterweight, and they always look the same with those black/yellow stripes.

But when you come home again, the streets are so clear to look at :D
Here in Belgium, the only wires you still see are the cable television wires against the front of the houses, but they don't really stick out that much. All the rest is in the ground. Except on the country side, there are still telephone poles, but I think that's about everywhere in the world.

here in our country, its mixed. there are some places where there are no such cable wires but if you are located in the capital, there are a lot of cable wires. some would even try to steal your cable wire and place them on their own household (where we call it "jumper") so that yes they have an electric connection but they dont have a payment. :(

Some years ago you would see wires only in the outskirt of the city I live, now you can't even see one, everything is underground and its prepared for updates. The only roadworks were the last installation off the natural gas pipes, and it was a 4-5 years ago. We don't have to worry to much about earthquakes, because they are small and rare.
