Was chatting with my mom the day before about her previous trip to Kyoto ^^; The temple in picture 9601.jpg is called Kiyomizu-dera (清水寺) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiyomizu-dera Some really nice pictures. Did you guys take the Shinkansen to Kyoto?
Another place to add to my must visit list. Such a pretty place!!

Where is the shop that sells those t-shirts? Would like to look for it when i go to Kyoto again. It is a waste that they chose to design and construct a modern city central. Kinda ruin the traditional cultural setting of Kyoto.
i saw tht picture...no fcuking/no doggy/no entry? lol
looks real nice. I've always wanted to visit Kyoto, but never had the time. T-T another great set of photos Danny! ^^

those tofu milk are actually called soy milk. just to let you know :) TOFU IS THE BEST!
Nice pics Danny. Those night tree shots look very cool. What you need to do get a portable GPS unit have it record your path taken then you can sync it with the time stamp of the pics you take. Look up Geo Blogging people are doing some neat stuff with it.
I want those souvenirs.
i heard kyoto is also a place full of universities...so people often call it a student place, is it? did u visit kyoto animation?
Amazing photos! They look so nice...

Kyoto is nice. I went there last year. Kiyomizu dera is the temple with the 3 waters. I think they are good for money, health, happiness, cant remember which one I drank. I didnt see the Gold pavillion. If you did the stormtrooper dancing there, george lucas would request to meet you because of the popularity.
Nice looking pics, I might go to Kyoto now to check it out and pick up some "souvenirs" lol. Always nice to check out the more "traditional" places to understand the culture but Akiba will always be on mind lol.
Damn Kyoto looks so nice...wish I could visit there... I need to start learning japanese again...2 years of japanese...stopped practicing for a year and bye bye
I went 1 day to Kyoto on my Japan trip in May. All the temples are a bit spread out over the city. And I didn't like the bus rides, they were kind of packed. But a packed bus is different from a packed train, dont know why, but I like trains more. Anyway.. Went to Kinakuji too (that gold building), Gion district, some temples in the neigborhood of Gion, and the Fushimi Inari shrine with the 1000 torii. Seems like you did some other places as well, but you did it in 2 days, I only had 1 day for Kyoto, so I was limited in what to go visit. Great pics :)
Great Photos, Danny! Love Kyoto - lived there for 9 months in 1999 - my first exposure to Japan & Japanese everyday life. Things I noticed: 1. Most people I knew had cell-phones with CAMERAS on them (not a big deal today, but did YOU have a camera phone in 98/99? Didn't think so. 2. Well, yes , cute girls everywhere. Didnt know how to handle this as I was previously living in the UK, not famous for pretty girls. 3. Most people went to Osaka on the train on the weekend to go out - Kyoto night-clubs arent up to much - thereare only 4 or 5 clubs of any description. 4. Yakuza were everywhere! They run a lot of things in Kansai in general, but of course the most flamboyant Yakuza where in "Gion", the bar & red-light district, often with rolled-up sleeves in the summer. Lots of other stuff... Your great pictures are reminding me of my time there...
I'm definitely going there this summer, but I'm just afraid of the slopes and the stairways, cause one of my friend is disabled, so I guess it's going to be hard to visit..
その町は本当に古いですね。でも、きれいな町ですよー。写真は素晴らしい! ^^
I would love to visit Kyoto someday. And one of the reasons why I would like to visit japan is to see those Cherry Blossoms. They just look so lovely. ^^
i hope some day to be in kyoto to visit all the temples ^^
"Something special about this water which is the reason why people are collecting it in bottles." It's one of 3 pure-water springs - one of the purest sources of water in Japan. The temple name (some-thing misu) means Pure Water iirc.
That stairs i saw in one episode of Rurouni Kenshin. Nice pics Danny.
IIRC, drinking from the three streams of water will give you love, wealth or happiness, depending on which one you drink from.
Kyoto is quite beautiful, I have to say. Thanks for the great pics danny.
Kyoto really does look beautiful! I hope I can visit some time, it seems like such a fine place to explore. The location of Spirited Away reminds me a lot of Kyoto, due to its traditional style buildings.

I loved Kyoto! probably a bit more than Tokyo... well they're completely different, I know, but I really enjoy the sight and the quietness of the city. Went to a lot of temples and have a great time there and especially at Kiyomizu . I also visit Nara, to visit more temples xD And all of them were amazing. I think picture 9611.jpg is at the Nijo Castle... Great pics! by the way :D
hmmm. must remember to drop by when im there...

Beautiful! I made up my mind to go their sometime. Thanks for your photos.
I only know that building featured in the movie as the Kiyomizu Stage, It is said that if you jump off the stage, you will get your deepest wishes fulfilled. And I should think you'd be wishing you never even thought of jumping down a frighteningly high drop in the first place. >.
Nice pictures and Kyoto looks awesome indeed. I noticed that you used a wide-angle lens for most (all?) the pictures. From what I know, while this captures more of the scene, it also distorts the edges a bit (makes it rounder). I don't have a dSLR but I have experience with film SLR photography I'm planning to get one soon. Is it a hassle to change lenses in between? Is that why you chose to stick with wide-angle all the way danny?
I think I will return to Kansai (Osaka and Kyoto) next time I come in Japan. This is different than Tokyo, but I prefer Kansai !

I was just at Kyoto a year ago so all the places you showed are still fresh in my mind. Like everyone has pointed out already, the first place you went with the three springs is the Kiyomizudera (Clear Water Temple). Supposedly the three fountains have the attributes to boost either health, longevity, and success in studies (popular with students!). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kiyomizu The second place that you went, the one next to Kyoto Station with the first picture being its gate, is Nijo Castle. That was the official castle of the Tokugawa Shogunate when there were visiting the Emperor in Kyoto. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nij%C5%8D_Castle The last place is the Kinkakujin or Golden Pavilion. Unfortunately, the original burned down about 50 years ago by a deranged monk (famously portrayed in the movie Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters), so what you're actually seeing is a concrete replication covered in gold. ^_^;; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kinkaku Hope this helps!
Nice pics - wish i coulda seen more of Kyoto when i went. I underestimated the size of the damn place and ended up having very little time to see anything before getting our shinkansen back! Some of those places look really busy and touristy - quite a contrast to the serene, traditional surroundings.

Some nice captures here. Do I see a lil' bit of HDR play? ;)
Awwwwwww... Danny so nice photos! My wife promise me to bringme there next time we came to Japan! I alaways wanted visit Kyoto. .:G:.
Really beautiful pictures. These pics remind me I have to take a vacation with summer here.
i have to go there sometime. Hopefully I will be able to fnd a job and save up enough money so that I can come to Japan on holiday next summer. Hopefully!!!
kyoto looks alot different in the winter. would love to go there again in spring or autumn, which i hear is lovely~!
im planning to go there on my next japan trip. the place seriously looks more laid back compared to tokyo.
If I ever go to Japan Kyoto is a top priority in my book since I love japanese old style buildings. Walking is not a problem since when I travel I always walk a lot mostly when I go to New York, walking from the Times Square to the Metropolitan museum is no easy task in the high summer of August

I've got to get myself one of those souvenirs when I go because they're, like, soooooo Kyoto. ;)
jimmie, Nope - just playing around with the shadow and highlights in Photoshop ^^ Tim, Thanks for the info ^o^ Rufus Shinra, I only have a wide and a macro so stick with the wide when I am out n about. Tiny Red Man, Nope - was there just to relax ^^ thegeek, Thanks, Will look it up. MK, I dont remember ToT Windbell, Shinkansen it was.
YAY! I am going there soooooooon ^^ I shall visit Kyoto during my holiday to Japan so seeing these photos is getting me even more excited :D
Danny, as always your pictures are great. I'm looking forward to visiting Kyoto myself in October.
Such a beautiful place... with a worldwide recognition for its temples and such. I wish to visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka (and why not Okinawa, dream on!) if I could afford it.
I had visited Kyoto in 2005. It is a nice place for relax and travel.
ah なるほど.. Macro wouldn't do with scenery. I just got my dSLR today so I'll be learning lots of photography ( ゚▽゚)/
Thanks for the trip, some photos are really nice. I Hope I could come here one day.

Stopped by Kyoto when I was visiting Nara last year. Kiyomizudera was absolutely packed to the brim, but its still quite a sight.

I just was in Kyoto a couple days ago (actually yesterday). Kiyomizu Temple was pretty cool, but it was raining when I went. At least some hot chicks were checking me out while I was there.
I like Kyoto over Tokyo by just a little bit. Mainly because of the cherry blossoms. Is it true that if a cherry blossom petal falls on you, it's good luck? Our teacher told us this and this prompted some people to actually shake a tree. Desperate much? We saw those awesome Tshirts near a Movix in Kyoto. We were going to take photos of them but a stingy lady didn't allow us. Some shops around that place had funny names like 'Bruce Pee.'
