the idea of a long stay in one of these rooms, after reading what you said, danny... is pretty much a put off, lol... who knows what pile of tissues, goo, stains on the recliner chairs might be left behind in the room? but seeing this is japan, i think they will fastidiously clean after the last customer before renting it out again ^^;

First Japanese food, now this, awesome. I am going to be in Tokyo for 5 days, this will come in handy. Next how about a tourist attraction guide? lol
"Come in Handy" ... pardon the pun!
Wow.... what a nice tips ^^ I really want go to Japan. But the only one hold me off is the accomodation price. Is there any other cheap accomodation di Japan, especially in Tokyo.
internet(& manga?) kissaten(cafes) appears to be the cheapest. that is if you'll manage to sleep in a reclining chair, they provide showers too for a small price or was it inclusive?
Haha. This is already very cheap by Tokyo standards. I stayed at Sakura Hostel Ikebukuro. Also bout 3000+ yen per day. But mine was a 8 person bunk. Had nice showers. Wasn't too bad.
All of the electronics looked to be of nice quality on the other pics i saw. And rooms looked rather nice. Seems like it would be expensive to fill all these rooms with fancy equipment like that. I'd be worried about security issues more than anything
Mao, if you reside there you may run out of "Mojo" and have no energy left to tour Akiba.
hmmmmmm. thats even cheaper than Motel 6, which in my opion is just as creepy as this place so what the hell... why not.
A self-love hotel.
Sounds good to me!
OmegaZ33 You could try the capsule hotels, or if thats not your style try this, its cheaper than the video room http://www.newkoyo.jp/ only 2500 for a single small room ! I'm going to be staying here if there is vacancy.
Those look interesting. Would try that and capsule hotel out when I go over there ^^ Would be a great experience I guess.
Hmm. But I think luggage / backpack would be a problem in capsule hotels? Heard the lockers at those capsule hotels are rather small. A luggage definitely won't get in, maybe a small backpack. For bout 3000 yen a night you can check Sakura Hostel out. I stayed at the Ikebukuro branch which just opened in Mar 08. Not too bad.
For that price I would definitely consider it if I went to Japan. You would need to save as much money as you can. Those Gundams aren't cheap :P
Interesting idea, but if you really wanna save money just stay at a hostel. We paid 2,100yen a night for ours and it was really nice. More money for when I went out and bought gundams + airbrush : D
I don't mind trying that but when I travel, hotel is just a place for me to rest/sleep only. I would go out to visit places and shop for unnecessary stuff ^^ Therefore I would rather spend less on accommodation.

Do the rooms get disinfected after someone's stayed in there? Not too keen on stepping or sitting in a puddle of "mojo".
I learnt a new word today - "Mojo". Never heard that term before ^^;
You haven´t seen any Austin Powers movies Danny?

Rufus: thanks for link to New Tokyo Hotel, I just made reservation through their website, though it seems they are quite busy I might not get it. Sulk: Do you have any more information on those cheap hostels? Much appreciated =P
Wow! Thank for the info ^^ You are the best!
Interesting. When i go to Japan by myself i will consider one of these. Noticed some Shounen Jump in there from 2006 (one of which was the Golden Week issue ...random fact there). These Tenga seem to be popping up all of za place aswell. But yeah these will be useful for those who want go "USE" the stuff they got in Akihabara >
*shutters* that remind me of a very disturbing time i had at a internet cafe over there. at-wan i think (not too sure might of been another internet cafe) just wanted to use the internet for like only 5-10min to check emails but apparently internet cafe are quiet different over there compared to New Zealand. For starter you have to buy time, this is normal, but the minimum amount is 30 min no less. at this point i was like wht?!? but then again i was desperate for my mail. After deciding on how much time you are gonna spend there you have to choose whether or not you want to work in a privet booth or a public room. I choose privet, thought it would be kool, man was i wrong. First thing i notice when i step into this booth, thats basically a tiny cubical that has just enough room to fit a pc, tv, ps2 and you, was that the keyboard had some type of white fluid over it. I was pretty sure of what it was than what is wasn't. Luckily after showing the staff i was able to move to another booth but the damage had already been done. when i got back to the hostel i was staying at i just had to clean myself, period.

nice guide. its true though that the accommodations in japan is expensive especially in tokyo. the foods are also expensive. i would like to visit tokyo so much but the cost of visiting them is quite expensive. need to save money first!
Hmm, interesting indeed. Although you quite clearly insinuated how it could be used, it could also be very useful if your running late in Akihabara and you NEED to get home for the next episode of anime, then you can quickly rent one of these and watch it so that you don't miss it ^^
why don't they hand condoms at the same time they hand tengas?
I've been viewing Hotel prices in Tokyo and they don't seam so expensive. Most of them have the same price for a room with twin double beds like in New York city which is around 130~150€ per night in summer time. I don't consider this expensive since Tokyo is one of the most if not the most expensive city in the world. I wouldn't consider this option since I like to sleep in a normal bed in a hotel not in a chair.

if you goto seoul in korea then they have places called "DVD-bahng" (dvd-room) similar to internet cafe, board game cafe, karaoke (where u pay by the hour to use some kind of recreational thing) in this case, u pay a fixed fee (maybe its per movie), pick out a couple of dvds and go into a viewing room. the rooms usually have a large futon/couch/bed type of furniture that can seat 2-4 ppl usually. its kinda sketchy though, these places are known to be where guys take girls in for a night ^^
@.@ thank god they have showers...that's pretty gross. Though, I think the little rooms probobly need showers more than the people in them...haha

Yah! I got a reservation at New Kyoto :) $21, mad cheap. PS I don't think this "video box" thing is quite the same nature as Korean's DVD-bahng lol
It looks a bit like those Bagus internet cafes, where you can also have boxes with seats or a "bed", with a pc or tv with ps2 and other stuff. Goes for the same prices. They also have big collections of manga, anime & movies. So you can do what you want: read, watch, surf, play or sleep for a cheap price. Very handy. But this one seems more of an adult nature :)
Wow!!! That's a huge library of adult dvds. O_O And their "equipment" is really nice.
Wow, this could come in handy if I ever go to Japan by myself lol. I hope they clean those chairs....lol.
Ummmmm... It's like an adult video arcade booth hotel?!?!?! Whoa!
I wonder if this is cheaper than renting a room, no reikins and includes cleaning service...
I'd much prefer to stay in a hotel or inn that was more traditional japanese, despite obsurdly high boarding rates.
Woot! Free Tenga! But most importantly, a free Internet connection is really nice for a budget hotel.
I don't care if they're used as jackoff booths, they look like damn nice places to stay in place of a far more expensive hotel. And the eroanime DVDs would give me something to do at night :)
woah... doesn't sound like it will suit girls tho (LOL)
Y3000 for 12 hours with all the necessities (YEY! FREE UNLIMITED INTERNET) and adult DVDs and tenga to boot XDDD
Nice, but I'd rather stay on one of those Hostels... the room could be completely sound proof, but I'd still have problems sleeping there just from knowing what might be happening on the next door. :P Anyways, great article Danny! I'm voting for more stuff about living in Japan, cheap places to stay and to do. I'm also planning to move there sometime soon...
Nice location (Akiba), for about $26USD, TV, DVD player, internet, and reclining chair? Not to mention a showering facility? That's pretty good...but I took a look at some sample pics of the room and it's...a bit small.
Just found this poking through the site. Man, I wish I could read Japanese. Or speak it. Beyond sounding like an idiot child.
Ehhh..... i'd get raeped if i walked into there.. along with other unfortunate girls.
it would be gruesome and a pain to clean the room if it weren't for the free tenga, it is indeed heaven sent!
I was watching a special on Fuji TV a few years back about these. Apparently, a lot of salarymen and students who can't afford regular rent are using these and the capsule hotels to live near where they work or go to school. Most of them said the biggest draws were the price, privacy, and shower. It's become a concern, lately, because it's breeding a new type of homeless person in Japan.
now I just need a place like a locker or a place to keep my stuff, when I am in akihabara
I'll sleep somewhere else then ^^; Doesn't seem fitting for ladies...
Never heard of anything like that around here... I like that idea for a temporary accommodation. Might consider it if I can't find any cheap accommodation close to Akiba.
Stay in Keio Hotel, Shinjuku guys. :3
Yeah, these cafes Tenga, Internet, etc. are additional options. Even some of the lower class people are using these places to sleep and shower if they are close to becoming homeless! Not a bad deal if the staff takes care of the facility well (if not they you'll know never to go there again!) But here in Sasebo(Nagasaki Ken) the internet cafes are 1980 Yen per 10 hours. No adult dvds/doujinshi here but lots of movies/anime/manga, you can sing karaoke, all you can drink, food prices are so cheap, so it's a place to relax and get away!
well that is just greasy.
Nothing like that in the UK, but ah well! If they could serve meals as cheap as their 'accommodation', we'd never have to buy a house again ^w^ I missed out on one of the Gera Gera places in Shinjuku, is it worth visiting the next time I go over there?
