whoa. I'd definately like to go on a gourmet rampage again over there...although it seems like the cheaper stuff both looks and tastes better! BTW mr Danny, renkon is lotus root. its nice and crunchy~
You make me hungry; lucky you having a pretty Japanese loving wife making good meals for you.
I am a big fan of Japanese food. My favorites is Sushi and Curry rice (well, curry rice is not exactly Japanese food ^^).
dinosaur, Shes from Shanghai ^^
I always enjoy a good bowl of udon or oyakodon. Man seeing all those yummy pictures in the morning sure makes me hungry =P~~~
the pricing doesnt seem to differ much compared to malaysia, tho the food presentation does look more.. how do you put it.. authentic? lol... gosh, that picture of the nabe looks like someone had a bit too much liquor and upped his stomach content into a bowl >.< renkon seems to look like lotus roots to me. lotus root and pork soup, mmm yumm... ^.^
Fish'n'chips? Excellent! But I've never tried 'real' japanese food before, sushi makes me feel squeamish.
all this food is making me hungry
woah! all of these photos are making me hungry!
Well, dosen't matter where she's from, still a lucky happy couple... I need to go get some Japanese food.
Renkon is Lotus root I believe... Never had it deep fried. My mom usually let's it soak in a combination of soy sauce, sugar, mirin and something else and then steams/boils it for my family to eat...
Renkon... If I'm not wrong, they are lotus roots.
That was a Shabu-shabu place in Lost in Translation. Not yaki-niku. It's in Daikanyama.
Oh God~. All those photos make me miss Japan greatly. Japanese food or Japanized food in 7-elven to resturant are all so much fun and so good to me. Maybe because Im japanese and i have japanese taste buds. It used to be my favorite thing to do to go to 7 eleven and get steamed buns on way home from school in winter time.
oh man i'm drooling plz stop posting food :D
Close to my area, there's this shop that sells stuff imported largely from Japan but sold quite expensively. They also sell sushis and served other kinds of Japanese foods (it's one part a small restaurant). I sometimes had sushi once a month.
Wow. The food definitely looks very well presented! Makes me want to buy them and try them out! By the way, is that fried rice and soup with a crispy top (crispy soup?) your wifey made? Looks good! Can she cook some of those for me ^^;
danny, where can i get gyudon for 400yen?
Most of that stuff looks really awesome and makes me miss being in Japan more than I already do ^^I Lot of those meals look quite familiar to me, due to I just imported a bi-lingual Japanese cookbook to get myself to learn some Japanese, learn to cook and eat healthier. Abura-Age Tofu pockets are my favourite ^_^
Seeing all this food in Japan is making me crave my fiancee's cooking, and all the delicious breads and sweets she bakes... I'm going to die a fat contented old man. ^o^ The one thing that surprised me about Japan is how much sushi one can buy for a reasonable price. Here, you would be lucky to get four rolls for 7 dollars. I always call it the "vegetable with holes in it" too. ^^; I will need to check out the Green Goblin, I do enjoy good Fish n Chips. Somewhere around Sinsekai in Osaka there is a good pub. Still haven't found the place...
They have those vibrate-y things in the US, too. A chain called Panera uses 'em. (They make damn good soup-and-sandwich combos.)
Can't wait to go to Japan to eat, going to eat a bunch of curry and gyudon
Has some Sushi yesterday during my Lunch Break and was just about to do a blogpost on it XD Japanese food rules. Too many people stay away from it because it looks different but its a lot better than the greasy crap you get here in Britain like "Sausage and Mash" and " Traditional English Breakfast" which may i also state, are basically the same thing. Japanese food ftw!
Wheres the Beef Bowl Danny??? I didn't see no Yoshinoya which I think is the only Japanese Fast Food place you can find here in the States. Too bad almost all of them are down the LA area, a 10 hour dive is a bit much for fast food no matter how good it is. ;-)
Man, this makes the bread I am eating now fail in comparison. Nice post, I now have even more of a craving for Japanese food!
Renkon is lotus root. ;) I like Yoshinoya's Sukiyaki. That is Japan's Yoshinoya. Other yoshinoyas outside of Japan are crap.
Mmmmm.... *dribbles all over keyboard* Love the Yakiniku, and that om rice looks really nice. Ill have to try that next time im over there. My fave dishes are Tonkatsu curry (coco Ichibanya), spicy pork ramen and Gyudon (yoshinoya) - i ate at those places SO many times the last time i was in Japan... Nice bumper update!
never had Renkon but some vendors outside my school fry's them then they put some red stuff on it. I don't know how much a bag though. Some restaurants near where i live have those vibrate-o thingys. Really useful if you want to play pranks on your friends who doesn't know what it is for. lol!
awesome post ^^ Im trying to learn to cook japanese food atm, but its pretty damn hard to get the proper ingrediants and not just some western rubbish >< Udon
My husband was warning me not to look at this post because it's gonna make me hungry... funny tho it's been so HOT and humid in japan, I hardly have any appetite o_o one of my favourite places to eat is Mosburger! ^O^!
awww man .... (slurp slurp) im soo hungry now! can't wait till i get to Japan!!! Fanks for da post Danny
Plastic foods save my life a lot of time in Japan. I remember just get out with the waitress to show her what I wanted to eat. ^_^
i love curry rice the most..! *o* followed by corokke, omu rice and yakibuta ramen~ >.< yay for food post..! *dies*
man, I'm on a diet right now. I was hoping to see some gundams and PVC dolls to make think about something else than food, cause i'm starving. I get here and see that post?! fuzakeruna!! congrats, you just made my favourite japanese restaurant richer... ^^' nice post danny, even though i'll think about you when i will go running to sweat that out.
I love Jap food! I'll eat it every day! My girlfriend is learning to cook Japanese... *_* In my blog (Italian) there are some review of Jap Rest in Rome. I think that the true Japanese kitchen, in Japan, it is different from that I eat in Italy...
Hey danny, does your wifey wife know how to make shanghai dumplings??? I like dumplings I like all sorts of food :) Chinese mainly though -_-; Dim Sum/Yum cha is always so good!!!
I have to agree with you on how tasty Japanese curry is. I'm half indian so I eat curry a lot at home hehe, but Japanese curry has the distinct taste to it.
I love chinese and japanese food. More so with Japanese food. Whenever I go to a Japanese resto around here I always go for the buffet option. heheh! ^^
O_O That all looks soo nice, and its really great prices! Which is exactly what i need to know for when i go to Japan, because i need to set myself a low budget so i can have sufficient food, but then ahve more money for figures and video games and manga...xD I went to a really nice sushi bar in London with my brother a little while back, its called "Moshi Moshi" and some of the stuff there was really nice! But it came to about £40 by the end of it, and that was for 2! But it was DEFINATELY worth it :D
I love the cook your own damn meat place we have here in Philadelphia. It's actually kind of fun. Plus after a few visits you get a beat going and can eat at a comfy pace. The only thing is having to defend a good piece from one of your scavenger bastard friends who has no system down and constantly tries to take your stuff! lol I like some Japanese food. I used to enjoy sushi, but I've lost the taste for it. I love Indian curry and Thai curry. The only Japanese curry I've had is the instant kind...and that was weird.
Yeah... I'm not sure I could live in Japan because of the food. See I'm not a seafood fan at all. If I ever go there I'll have to eat as much as I can before I board the plane and live off that until I leave. Joking... joking. I hope I'm wrong, as some of the stuff here does look good. I could never eat what's in that first picture though o_O
Not a seafood fan but damn, I love jap food!! There are some pretty wierd stuff over there tho, particularly their take on western dishes. I mean, come on, long sticks of asparagus on a Pizza???? Wagyuu beef is one of the best dishes I have ever had tho. it's apparently rated even higher than kobe beef!!
Mmmmmmmmmm... What I'd do for a nice plate of any of those dishes right now. Really love Japanese food, especially Japanese food in Japan. It's also gone lunchtime and I haven't had lunch yet. Also the food buzzer/vibrator things - they do have them here (in brb pubs). They don't look quite so hi-tech and classy but it's still very exciting when they do go off and you've been waiting like over an hour for pizza. Oh dammit i really need to stop watching the tennis and go make some lunch ^_^ Don't lose while I'm away Tiger Tim!
I often enjoy a good tonkotsu shoyu ramen every now and then. ^^
Ahhh japanese food... I think is grate, really grate. My wife is japanese so few times a week we eat something special^^. I've been to Japan four times and i've tried lots of dishes, not all but many. My favourite: -Misou ramen -Katsudon -Yakisoba -Soba(in summer time is do good!) ahhhh Danny u make me feel like eat japanese, tonight i'll ask to my wife! Bye bye
Thanks for the pics. I came to visit Japan twice and I really like its place, food and technology.
Last time I was in Japan, I still ate meat. I am now vegetarian, on the way to becoming vegan. How hard a time will I have trying to find something to eat? I can't recall seeing a lot of vegetarian food in Japan.
@xGabex: I understand your situation. I'm vegetarian too, and i plan to study in japan. But when it comes to the food part, I get problems. It's not as if you say "watashiwa be-ji-te-ran desu" will help in restaurants...so before you go, stock on cup noodles.. T.T or bread..and furthermore, most soups have chicken or fish stocks in them.. hiaz..planning to cook if i live there 1 day...
Ate Om Rice for lunch today, couldn't resist and I blame it on this post.
Sadly, never. I am extremely allergic to seafood: when I eat it it will puff up my throat and I have difficulty breathing to the point of a medical emergency =/. It's still good to know that there are a few excellent foods in Japan that I can still eat, and I was suprised that foods such as pizza are over there ^^ (maybe I need to head to Japan soon to get a taste of life over there).
love to... doesn't have that much variation in here. and the price somehow expensive for me. 600*Rp100,00=Rp60000 i still bragging my parents for money T_T
Not very good dim sum in Japan? I'd be sad if I were, haha.
I might get some japanese food tomorrow =) I'll be meeting my gf in Duesseldorf. Duesseldorf has the largest japanese community in Germany. Lucky me, it's nearby^^
To cook Siew Yook: http://cookingismypassion.blogspot.com/2007/01/mom-made-roast-pork.html I should try it when I get a chance.
Man o man I miss japan, not to mention the food. I couldn't even finish the post because looking at all that yummy food made me hungry. Why can there be no good japanese restaurants where i live?
It almost brings me to tears how much I long to go back to all the good eats. Danny, I know your pain. It is very challenging to find decent Chinese food in Japan. I went to the previous Chinese Iron Chef's restaurant and it was barely sub-par. It was soooo disappointing, but a family member showed me a place near Ebisu that had some real nice authencity of Mandarin/Cantonese cuisine with a fair price. If you want probably the best dumplings that has even landed on your taste buds I highly recommend Din Tai Fung. They have quite a few branches in Japan, while their headquarters is based in Taipei and another brand is in L.A. in Arcadia (which just recently the quality has been slipping over there). The original headquarters is still the best, but I'd rank the dumplings I ate at Shinjuku was a close 2nd. I believe they also have a branch in Tamagawa. I must warn you that the wait for these dumplings is like waiting to get into one of those rotating sushi restaurants. Omurice! I am a quest to find the best Omurice and one with demi-glace sauce instead of ketchup on the top. When I was shopping in Akiba, I ran across a mini-bakery that had a Melon Pan for sale! Y'know in every anime or drama that you run across there is always a Melon Pan. Of course I tried it, but then I saw a Takoyaki stand! I was so excited, but I was rather full so I passed it up and then I never saw another stand again. I regret not buying some to try. I feel so ashamed -_- I have a question about Yakiniku's sauces. I am not sure if it is standard in most Yakiniku's restaurants since I've only been to two, but in one restaurant I went to at some pier where there was a huge Toyota Car showing I had some satisfying Yakiniku. The best part was when I was dipping the meat, tofu, and veggies in this orange sauce. I was wondering if you bychance have any idea what it could be. It was a semi-sweet sauce that contained vinegar, a little Japanese mayo, maybe Soy Sauce, and something else. It was fantastic. I think it is also used in salads over there. I am also on a quest for good Ramen... Ok I must stop rambling.
Dim Sum looks tasty!!! for a rat!!!
OK, I am of Hong Kong ethnicity and that dim sum just looks like crap...
Hello, This post makes me hungry. Below is my Thai food comparing to Danny's Japanese dishes :-) http://heaventhailand.blogspot.com/search/label/thai%20food David
Renkon is Lotus Root. I've had it in Kyoto as tempura, and in Tokyo stuffed with chicken mince and then deep fried. Pretty versatile - it's a bit like water chestnut in texture and takes on the taste of whatever it's cooked with.
Wah~ As expected, food pricing will be more expensive in Japan, than here in Indonesia. Hmm... I must learn to cook.
i thought the gyudon looked the most appetizing and then you mentioned that it's cheap. now i know what i'm eating if i visit japan.
Those Vegetables with Holes in it are Lotus Root. :)
Almost everywhere you go in Japan the food is sooooo gooood! The customers pretty picky on taste so if it doesn't taste one bit good it's going out of business. I used to think I would lose weight coming to Japan because of the portion sizes being smaller and the prices being higher but after living here for some time you can definitely find great deals and gain weight if you're not careful!
I went on a trip to China and it was the same, only with more local and ... less attractive food. The prices were cheap as chips and the food was really nice. Xian - I had Mongolian Specialities such as their rock hard bread dough broken into a broth of lamb and beef with fresh chili and garlic, or the Skewer of five spices roasted by the locals over a hot coal fire. The Japanese food in Australia are rarely authentic, either made by Chinese, Koreans, or Taiwanese people. The few good ones are Fusion - meaning a flux of Japanese cooking mixed with French and European influence.
over here, the regular food courts are generally all fast food either you order and get your food at the counter like a regular fast food restaurant or continue the line like you do at Subways as an example. however in the chinese food courts, you get a number. usually just a ripped piece of paper or a piece of small notepad paper or even a post-it with a number of course. once your order is ready, they'll call out your number and repeat a few times until hopefully you hear it and pick up your order. i've seen at least one store with a microphone to call your number.
MELON SODA!!!!RAWR!!!!RAMUNE!!!!!!!CURRY!!!!!SUSHI/SASHIMI!!!!!UDON!!!!!ETC LOL~~
ooo that all looks so delicious >.< i want some! XD
everything looks good except for the "various meats dish that looks gross" dish you mentioned. i tried almost everything there but didn't bother eating that dish.
yummie yummie yum yum I feel hungry
you should put pics of things like zucchini or endive with their price
Thanks for your post which is a great guide through the Japanese cuisine! Once I was lucky to visit the the Japanese FOOD and SAKE Festival in Southern California. Now I'm dreaming to taste Japan in Tokyo. P.S. I've never seen the vibrator a lot of you have talked about....
