Japanese Food - a subject that has to be talked about at least once. This post also covers food served in Japan.
Those traveling to Japan may want to print and bring this post along to avoid the "point-at-menu-that-has-no-pics-and-see-what-arrives" syndrome.

This first dish is Kawa Ebi (川えび) which is deep fried prawns. I never thought I could eat a prawn whole like this until I actually tried it. Costs about 600 yen.
A shop selling Om Rice (オムライス) which is basically rice wrapped in a sheet of lightly fried egg. Also comes with toppings and other side dishes.
You have to wait for your food at some food courts so you get one of these devices that will buzz when your grub is ready. If this was back in the UK, I can envision many of these going missing.
Tonkotsu Ramen (豚骨ラーメン) noodles. Soup base is made from pig stock. A Yukorin fan to cool me down while I eat. About 800 yen.
Many shops do have these plastic renditions in the window which you can just point to. This shop window is for some reason also filled with UFO Catcher goodies.
Popular Korean Dish Yukke Jang (ユッケジャン)。Very hot n spicy. About 800 yen.
Set of Tenpura (天ぷら) and udon at Tenya. About 600 yen.
Inside this ball of ice are two pieces of Sashimi (raw fish). About 2,000 yen !
DIY mushrooms. About 1,000 yen @.@
Sometimes I need to work late and dont get much time to eat out so its a night of rolled sushi. About 700 yen for both sets.
Yakiniku (焼き肉). Traditionally eaten in Korea but very popular in Japan.
You basically cook the meat that you order. Is this funny? I know many people laughed when they watched this bit in Lost In Translation (which I watched all the time when I left Japan for Seattle).
More of the plastic food. These make it so much easier to make food selections.
Kaisendon (海鮮丼). A bowl of rice with seafood. About 650 yen.
The Om Rice with a croquette (コロッケ) and sauce. Tastes lovely. About 600 yen.
I'm sure this was a Vietnamese place in Shibuya. Green curry set at about 1,000 yen.
Love this dish. Agedashi Tofu (揚げ出し豆腐) which is deep fried Tofu in sauce. About 500 yen.
Yum! Tebasaki (手羽先). Grilled chicken wings on a stick. About 400 yen for a plate of two sticks.
Another type of Kaisendon. Bowl of rice with seafood topped with a half boiled egg. About 650 yen.
More Kaisendon shenanigans.
This is the closest I'm going to get to eating Siew Yook in Japan. Taste is good though. About 1,500 yen for this plate.
Dim sum - looks like shite and also tastes like shite.
Some of the Pizzas served over here are really nice. This came with a set at 1,800 yen in Daikanyama.
And we do eat at home sometimes ^^; Wifey makes some great dishes *^-^*
Gyudon (牛丼). Bowl of rice with beef. This set cost 400 yen - a bargain especially when you want to save your money for shopping in Akiba.
Yes thats a raw egg which you beat and pour over the rice bowl.
The Green Goblin pub in Akasaka does a great Fish n Chips - when you walk in its full of Gaijin. About 1,500 yen.
Half boiled egg at about 350 yen.
I forgot what this is called but its a Nabe full of meat, seafood and vegetables - not only does it look gross, it tastes gross too.
Yakiniku set at about 980 yen.
I love Japanese curry. This can be eaten at Akihabara at a cost of 800 yen.
The sushi place around the corner from where we live. About 200 yen for a plate of two. The seaweed rolled ones are fish eggs - look gross but taste good.
Example of Chinese food in Japan. Ebichiri (エビチリ) lunch at about 1,000 yen. Spicy prawns with rice.
This is a most amusing dish called Otooshi. When you go to a Japanese Izakaya (pub) they bring along some steamed towels and this Otooshi small dish. Every time you go it will be different.
You think that its just a snack to keep you occupied while waiting but they charge you about 250 yen for it! Its just an excuse to take money from you which I hate because sometimes it tastes like a baboons bottom.

If you are brought these and dont fancy paying for it then ask the waiter to take it away *before* he leaves the table.
Deep fried Renkon. Dont know what Renkon is in English but its a vegetable with holes in it ^^;
The last few pics are of a typical Japanese food shop.
More food in the related galleries for this post.

Never had it deep fried. My mom usually let's it soak in a combination of soy sauce, sugar, mirin and something else and then steams/boils it for my family to eat...

Oh God~. All those photos make me miss Japan greatly.

Japanese food or Japanized food in 7-elven to resturant are all so much fun and so good to me. Maybe because Im japanese and i have japanese taste buds. It used to be my favorite thing to do to go to 7 eleven and get steamed buns on way home from school in winter time.

Close to my area, there's this shop that sells stuff imported largely from Japan but sold quite expensively. They also sell sushis and served other kinds of Japanese foods (it's one part a small restaurant). I sometimes had sushi once a month.

Most of that stuff looks really awesome and makes me miss being in Japan more than I already do ^^I Lot of those meals look quite familiar to me, due to I just imported a bi-lingual Japanese cookbook to get myself to learn some Japanese, learn to cook and eat healthier. Abura-Age Tofu pockets are my favourite ^_^

Seeing all this food in Japan is making me crave my fiancee's cooking, and all the delicious breads and sweets she bakes... I'm going to die a fat contented old man. ^o^

The one thing that surprised me about Japan is how much sushi one can buy for a reasonable price. Here, you would be lucky to get four rolls for 7 dollars.

I always call it the "vegetable with holes in it" too. ^^;

I will need to check out the Green Goblin, I do enjoy good Fish n Chips. Somewhere around Sinsekai in Osaka there is a good pub. Still haven't found the place...

Has some Sushi yesterday during my Lunch Break and was just about to do a blogpost on it XD Japanese food rules. Too many people stay away from it because it looks different but its a lot better than the greasy crap you get here in Britain like "Sausage and Mash" and " Traditional English Breakfast" which may i also state, are basically the same thing. Japanese food ftw!

Wheres the Beef Bowl Danny???

I didn't see no Yoshinoya which I think is the only Japanese Fast Food place you can find here in the States. Too bad almost all of them are down the LA area, a 10 hour dive is a bit much for fast food no matter how good it is. ;-)

O_O That all looks soo nice, and its really great prices! Which is exactly what i need to know for when i go to Japan, because i need to set myself a low budget so i can have sufficient food, but then ahve more money for figures and video games and manga...xD

I went to a really nice sushi bar in London with my brother a little while back, its called "Moshi Moshi" and some of the stuff there was really nice! But it came to about £40 by the end of it, and that was for 2! But it was DEFINATELY worth it :D

I love the cook your own damn meat place we have here in Philadelphia. It's actually kind of fun. Plus after a few visits you get a beat going and can eat at a comfy pace. The only thing is having to defend a good piece from one of your scavenger bastard friends who has no system down and constantly tries to take your stuff! lol

I like some Japanese food. I used to enjoy sushi, but I've lost the taste for it. I love Indian curry and Thai curry. The only Japanese curry I've had is the instant kind...and that was weird.

Yeah... I'm not sure I could live in Japan because of the food. See I'm not a seafood fan at all. If I ever go there I'll have to eat as much as I can before I board the plane and live off that until I leave. Joking... joking. I hope I'm wrong, as some of the stuff here does look good.

What I'd do for a nice plate of any of those dishes right now. Really love Japanese food, especially Japanese food in Japan. It's also gone lunchtime and I haven't had lunch yet.

Also the food buzzer/vibrator things - they do have them here (in brb pubs). They don't look quite so hi-tech and classy but it's still very exciting when they do go off and you've been waiting like over an hour for pizza.

It's not as if you say "watashiwa be-ji-te-ran desu" will help in restaurants...so before you go, stock on cup noodles.. Sadly, never. I am extremely allergic to seafood: when I eat it it will puff up my throat and I have difficulty breathing to the point of a medical emergency =/.

It's still good to know that there are a few excellent foods in Japan that I can still eat, and I was suprised that foods such as pizza are over there ^^ (maybe I need to head to Japan soon to get a taste of life over there).

(ID #50663) Posted on 2007/06/30 03:50
It almost brings me to tears how much I long to go back to all the good eats.

Danny,

I know your pain. It is very challenging to find decent Chinese food in Japan. I went to the previous Chinese Iron Chef's restaurant and it was barely sub-par. It was soooo disappointing, but a family member showed me a place near Ebisu that had some real nice authencity of Mandarin/Cantonese cuisine with a fair price.

If you want probably the best dumplings that has even landed on your taste buds I highly recommend Din Tai Fung. They have quite a few branches in Japan, while their headquarters is based in Taipei and another brand is in L.A. in Arcadia (which just recently the quality has been slipping over there). The original headquarters is still the best, but I'd rank the dumplings I ate at Shinjuku was a close 2nd. I believe they also have a branch in Tamagawa.

I must warn you that the wait for these dumplings is like waiting to get into one of those rotating sushi restaurants.

Omurice! I am a quest to find the best Omurice and one with demi-glace sauce instead of ketchup on the top.

When I was shopping in Akiba, I ran across a mini-bakery that had a Melon Pan for sale! Y'know in every anime or drama that you run across there is always a Melon Pan. Of course I tried it, but then I saw a Takoyaki stand! I was so excited, but I was rather full so I passed it up and then I never saw another stand again. I regret not buying some to try. I feel so ashamed -_-

I have a question about Yakiniku's sauces. I am not sure if it is standard in most Yakiniku's restaurants since I've only been to two, but in one restaurant I went to at some pier where there was a huge Toyota Car showing I had some satisfying Yakiniku. The best part was when I was dipping the meat, tofu, and veggies in this orange sauce. I was wondering if you bychance have any idea what it could be. It was a semi-sweet sauce that contained vinegar, a little Japanese mayo, maybe Soy Sauce, and something else. It was fantastic. I think it is also used in salads over there.

I am also on a quest for good Ramen... Ok I must stop rambling.

Renkon is Lotus Root. I've had it in Kyoto as tempura, and in Tokyo stuffed with chicken mince and then deep fried. Pretty versatile - it's a bit like water chestnut in texture and takes on the taste of whatever it's cooked with.

Wah~

As expected, food pricing will be more expensive in Japan, than here in Indonesia.

Hmm... I must learn to cook.

Almost everywhere you go in Japan the food is sooooo gooood!

The customers pretty picky on taste so if it doesn't taste one bit good it's going out of business.

I used to think I would lose weight coming to Japan because of the portion sizes being smaller and the prices being higher but after living here for some time you can definitely find great deals and gain weight if you're not careful!

I went on a trip to China and it was the same, only with more local and ... less attractive food.

The prices were cheap as chips and the food was really nice.

Xian - I had Mongolian Specialities such as their rock hard bread dough broken into a broth of lamb and beef with fresh chili and garlic,
or the Skewer of five spices roasted by the locals over a hot coal fire.

The Japanese food in Australia are rarely authentic, either made by Chinese, Koreans, or Taiwanese people. The few good ones are Fusion - meaning a flux of Japanese cooking mixed with French and European influence.

over here, the regular food courts are generally all fast food either you order and get your food at the counter like a regular fast food restaurant or continue the line like you do at Subways as an example. however in the chinese food courts, you get a number. usually just a ripped piece of paper or a piece of small notepad paper or even a post-it with a number of course. once your order is ready, they'll call out your number and repeat a few times until hopefully you hear it and pick up your order. i've seen at least one store with a microphone to call your number.
