Here in LA a while ago there was a news investigation on food safety in restaurants. What the news crew found out was shocking. Chefs not washing their hands, picking up dirty food off the floor and serving it, and more nasty things. Danny, in Japan do news stations investigate restaurants and report the findings to the public?
Tofu-san, Have not really seen anything on restaurants. I do spot cockroaches form time to time though. Whats worse is when you see the chef smoking...
Chef smoking, reminds me of gordon ramsey's kitchen nightmares. I hope your not into extreme food substances danny, seriously why would any sane person eat puffer fish? When you can keep them as pets, still the price is a killer. I saw one in sainbury's for £75 ^^;.
I worry less about dying from food and more about what goes on in the kitchen of some restaurants. You just never know who's having a bad day while handling your food ^^;
I've been in countries where one must be careful primarily of the water. That doesn't just mean not drinking tap water, though. It also means being wary of vegetables, that may have been grown or washed with contaminated water, and any non-bottled beverage that might have been mixed with tap water. As well, those countries also tend to have restaurants where sanitation and proper food storage is not priority number one. When the dead chicken is hanging right next to the grill ALL DAY in the heat, perhaps unplucked, right next to the street... well, you probably want to steer clear. Here in the US, food isn't immediately dangerous. We have to worry more about things like corn syrup and hydrogenated oils killing us slowly. :P
I always wanted to try fugu when I get the chance to visit Japan. Hopefully I wun die from it.
A little hard to pick just one, we are always having problem with food processing here in the states. It seems throughout the world profit is more important than quality.
Damn, thanks for the heads up Danny, i'm going to Japan this summer and i'm glad you warned me about those brand :) Fugu, i was already aware of that, and i really don't like the idea of dying after eating a fish.
no matter where u r from, rules are rules. As a Japanese, I am really upset with those people in Japan as much as to those meat manufacture people in U.S.(beef issue, we wanna have Yoshinoya~!) I felt Japan have clean image. I thought we are very strict about rules especially for food. So I am very disappointed and upset. It's not too long ago for Fujiya scandal, and now meat! They don't learn, or believe strongly that they can get away with it. I don't even live in Japan now, but I am quite sick and tired of those scandals, not only food, but politics and other stuff also. Whenever I read about it, I feel I don't wanna go back anymore, or I wish I have a deathnote...><
Anywhere you go there'll be some place that don't abide by health regulations or are falsely saying what they use in their products. Though luckily here in Australia majority of food outlets are clean and use fresh products.
Fugu!!! tried once. didn't die. damn.
Well, I guess there companies that produce crap + dangerous food everywhere.
we got lot of contaminated fish down here, in indonesia. and several bird flu epidemic(killed 'bout hundred of my countrymen) and mad cow disease the ajinomoto(local MSG) was use pig essence for the ingredient, and our country is islamic which means its prespetorous to eat or use any pig product my country filled with dangerous and harem-ed food..... never have any fugu case here
I'm not really sure about the taste but people who've tried Fugu and survived seemed to have liked it. Might also be the risk involve that makes it more appealing. heheh
Fugu ... looks like a Pokemon haha! I would'nt mind having it as my pet :D though, I rather not eat it because I don't want to die from it. however, you hate some dude? feed him some Fugu.. I mean, treat him too a restauran dinner...Fugu him...(jks)
The most dangerous food in my region is probably just stale food. another rather harmless example is the durian... it's only dangerous if it drops onto you (its got spikes, its hard and heavy).

The Fujiya in Kagurazaka, where I live, is still booming with customers. You even have to reserve Peko-chan-things in advance to get at hold of them...
I once saw how fugu was prepared. They slice it into really thin pieces. It looked quite delicious to me. However, any Simpsonsfan should be alarmed by the danger of fugu. Poor Homer^^ I would try it any time.
"Dangerous food" huh? We've got taho that's had cockroaches running around the empty containers at night and fishballs/squidballs/etc. that have been stepped on before packaging, to say the least.
Eating out is always a gamble and for certain types of food sometimes the dirtier the place looks the better tasting the food...just don't look at the floor! I also find it funny that the most related post to dangerous food is the NIPPLESS post. Drinking milk in Japan with your shirt off is like a deathwish adventure.
being from a third world latin american country... there's quite a bit of dangerous foods here, but the good side of it is that if you don't get sick in here, there's no possible chance IN HELL you'll get stomach sick anywhere else :P
American food is deadly food lol, so much people die from clogged arteries, heart attacks, and other health related deaths resulting from a bad American diet, mainly fast food.
Super Rats, Hehe, Nav2.0 chooses the related posts out of the related category that I assign to the post ^^; Erik, Yowzers! Radical Anime Fan, You got me there! Subaruhess, In Sainsburys?!
fastfoods are also dangerous foods...cholesterol and fats that could clog your arteries and gives you a cardiac arrest how 'bout some exotic foods? XD it may not be a dangerous food but the philippines has a fine share of exotic foods ^^ duckling fetus/balut anyone? XDDD
Considering my daughter and I will be coming to Japan for the first time in October, this is a good article for me to read. Thanks for the heads up, Danny.

Eating Halibut is even more dangerous. There are worms that live in Halibut, that when they reproduce daily (2-3,000 eggs) the larve pass through your stomach lining and they crawl up into your brain, they feed off your brain, using secretions to shut down your bodies defense mechanisms. This kills twice as many people a year as do these poisonous fish. Most people dont even know about it though. BTW same thing can happen from eating undercooked pork. Less likely though. Have a great dinner!
durian + beer or a coke= choked to death got few case of it here
