Gundam Exia is the main mobile suit for the next Gundam00 series. Maybe it will look better in the actual anime.

I was surprised to hear that many of the mobile suits from the Seed series were designed by freelance designers - one of them was a friend of a colleague at Microsoft but I never got to speak to him about it. You'd think that there would be logic in the history and designs of mobile suits - just like how you see designs of the starships in Star Wars evolve.

I was quite disappointed to hear that Sunrise/Bandai just outsourced some of the designs. Its like they are churning out stuff so that they can merchandise the Gunpla.
Scan comes from this months New Type (larger version below).

The outsourcing of Gundam Design probably started when they asked Syd Mead (Blade Runner, Aliens) to design that god awful Gundam Turn A.

Armorered Core series has the best mecha design, anyway. Gundam is too restrictive... they could branch out a lot in the design

That's interesting, freelance artist, what happen to those artist that design the UC gundam series.
A funny thing in Exia is the yellow fin is on the shoulder instead, feels like it'll block the head when it turns

The Exia looks like a cross between Turn A and something else. Or a less-fat version of Turn A.

I think this is a good strategy as this will not limit the creativity of the design as who know some other people (not in that industry) can come with design that are more acceptable than those professional.

Instead of a mustache, fans will now be glorified by movable sideburns and a pair of pointy collarbones that are sticking out in a "V" shape.

With each new Gundam series it gets worse and worse... Give me 0079, 0080, 0083, Zeta, Char's Counter-Attack, or even G... Or X.

Gundam Seed mecha designs were outsourced, i didn't expect that ^^;;;

I guess Bandai is cost cutting and achieving maximum profit on their Gunpla lines.

Let's just hope that their cost cutting doesn't also affect the plot and story of Gundam 00

I'm looking forward on the new Gundam series ^^

i kinda like the futuristic and slick aspect on it. Gundam kinda restricted on designs somehow, i am glad, this time they design them in a much more futuristic look rather then sticking to the goody old rx-78 mould.

The sideburn vents somehow reminds me of the F-91 series of mecha designs. I guess it follows the pattern: rehash of 'One Year War', 'Zeta Gundam' and now comes the F-91 silhouette series.

Even if the seed designs were outsourced, it's not like Sunrise didn't have certain expectations and guidelines for each design.

Gundam Exia doesn't look too bad. I think it just needs more exposure.

The bulky but detailed mechanical design found in Gundam Sentinel is still my favourite. Other than that, I do like mass-produced MS like the GM.

Outside of Gundam, Armored Core and Gasaraki are also my favourite mechas.

Quite an interesting design..I would want to know what kind of system and ability this machine and its brethren machines (there are 4 of em altogether, correct me if I am wrong) has got to offer..

As for the characters in this upcoming new series..Please Sunrise, NO more EMO shiats like Kira and Shinn, we need more mature characters like Amuro and Char..Frankly, I am sick of characters crying and crying in Gundam SEED and Destiny alike already...

Just my two cents though..^^

So far this Gundam Exia unit reminds me of the Gundam V2 design. Also it's kinda nice that this design of Gundam is moving away from the semi-blocky style of the Strike Gundam.

No wonder SEED designs looked terrible after the first 5... Raider Gundam? Sheesh. SEED Destiny was worse, with Destiny Gundam a new low in Gundam design. Can't think of anything? Hey let's just put *everything* on one MS!

Sheesh.

I think Exia is made of win. Because a lot of SEEDs mechs had rather uninspired designs, I tend to gravitate towards more "unconventional" takes on the Gundam, especially the head. Pentagonal camera? Thick, solid v-fin? Pretty neat if you ask me.

The design of G. Exia is quite nice, a departure of the recent gundam design.

I'm not against the outsourcing fro design of gundam, it's just they should know the expactation of the public...

Interesting design. I'll need to see the full body lineart before deciding but it looks miles better than the first glut of GSD units. Those never did anything for me.

It does look better than the Cosmic Era Gundams. Those were just recyles of either each other or else the UC designs, but Exia looks real sleek.

Nice designs. Looks like someone is trying to breath new life into a series that should have died after the original.

Has nice points and not so nice points. I want to see more before I say nay or yea.

I don't find it odd that Bandai is contracting out Gundam design. You know me, I think merchandising is Bandai's only concern when it comes to Gunpla. Something that annoys me to no end as well.

At one time I felt there was more of a design evolution to various Gundams and continuity to the Gundam Universe. My opinions about this is, once the Gundam universe moved more into Bandai's hands and out of Yoshiyuki-san and Sunrise hands things started to go astray. No pun intended. I know without Bandai we wouldn't have seen Gundam. Now everything feels like the Beatles "Magical Mystery Tour"; Let's wander about and see what happens. Don't get me wrong, its not like the journey hasn't been interesting. It would be nice to know Bandai has commitment beyond selling Gunpla.

@CMWilly, the Unicorn Gundam is from a story running in Gundam Ace Magazine. Keep meaning to check that out...

Hmmm..
I like it so far, i've checked gunota for the full body shots.. they say this is a close up model with 7 blades.. interesting.. i like that some originality is coming from this series and not jjust the rehash of uc suits.. though some were decent..
Looking forward to the series.. and and can't wait to see the enemy suits..just wonder where there going to place the zaku at he he...

I've checked the gunota, and I think he design is well done.
I'm interesed in gundam kyrios, since it's transformable, and those cool pointed knee(reminds me of S and Ex-S).
But when he kits come out, I think I'll choose gundam Dynames instead since it has long rifle (katoki's fetish) and cooler colour scheme. Oh, and I would like to know about "the sniping mode"

i personnally think it looks like stargazer.
I find tat all new series of gundam are getting worse and worse because the mecha are all like gods. Before, mobile suits had like specific types of weapons on them like guns only, swords only or something like tat. Now, everythingis included and they make all the mecha like invincible.

Seed design from freelancers?? talk about outsourcing. No wonder the some of the mechas look like crap. its not that i hate them, i do bought all the master grade mecha and some 1/100 seeds, but sometimes i do wonder why the designs looks kinda "inferior" to those UC counterparts. Well its good to be innovative, but in some areas especially Gundam, just being innovative isn't enough. Creativity is what people sought for.. kinda 20% innovative and 80% creativity in a gundam design.. Hope that this coming series will features more "original mecha designs". I really like the Exia, Mecha with the Seven Blades. Slick. Lol

my last comment turned out bad since my keyboard was broken (or was it me?)...by the way I'd like to point that the design seems far away from the word "realistic" but closer to "cool and artistic". The gundams had too much ornaments on it, too decorative... and now I kinda miss simple MS with just beam rifle, saber, and shield only.
Oh, and I presume there will be another gundam rolled out in the middle of series, friends or foes, maybe something godly like Destiny or Freedom. That always happen, the main character get stronger Gundam later on to replace his old gundam. God Gundam, Wing Zero, Double X, Freedom, Destiny...what kind of gundam that will replace Exia?
And don't forget the rivals. The only thing that match to a gundam is another gundam, right?

I personally think this is a pretty cool MS. I might be wrong, but I think Kunio Okawara(designer of the famous RX-78) designed this Mobile Suit. It would be awesome if Hajime Katoki could work on this series.

Personally I don't like Gundam Exia at first but looking at the figure in 360, I can say that Exia is a classic and it's better than any mechs from SEED/Destiny. Recent Gundams are more on "big-back-packs" while Gundam Exia can make it's own mark even without having wings or something.

Turn A DID NOT sucked. By all means it's much better than most of the crap you find in Seed. And G Gundam is quite a refreshing take on the Gundam universe, except for some really ridiculous designs (Windmill Gundam, lol). I mean, it's the first Gundam series that had the main characters screaming in each episode :p

Back on topic, Exia looks cool, at least after a long torture from Seed (Astrays are find tho). What suprises me is that the plamos comes before the anime. Hopefully the story would be better this time around (Writers of Excel Saga? Holy cow!)
