Got myself this Intuos PTZ-630 pen tablet by Wacom early on in the year when Azami sensei and I started to work on Mirai-chan. I just found it more convenient to sketch directly in photoshop rather than on paper and then do a scan. The pen tablet also allows me to change bits n pieces of Azami sensei's drafts easily.

Another reason why I decided to get a tablet is because I wanted it to aid in designing accessories. I do a bit of shoe design and and also plan to launch a brand of accessories in the near future. You know Han Solo's cool belt? Stuff like that and shoulder holsters ^^;
Wacom Pen Tablet (click to enlarge)
Decided to start off with the A5 size and so far it has been more than enough.
Wacom Pen Tablet (click to enlarge)
The tablet comes with a useless mouse that I never use. Its interesting though as it doesnt need batteries and works when in proximity of the tablet.
Some extra nibs are supplied each of varying pressure.
Wacom Pen Tablet (click to enlarge)
There are buttons on each side of the tablet which you can configure to do pretty much anything you want including make tea.
Wacom Pen Tablet (click to enlarge)
The annoying thing is that the pen doesn't come with a wheel - I have to pay extra 8,000 yen for one that does.

Here you can map the tablet to different parts of the screen. Using the tablet when you are screen spanning is tough as you can only (I think) map to one screen. If I want to play around with the other screen then I need to use the mouse.
The unit cost about 24,000 yen yen and includes some crap trial software which you dont really need. I use Photoshop mainly for art and retouch and Fireworks for all web graphics. I have to work on Mirai's graphics in Photoshop however as the colors look strange in Fireworks - my color management knowledge is like zilch.
Folks in Japan can get this at Amazon.co.jp.

I've considered getting a tablet. Used to do graphics for fun. However, take the price and compare it with the impact it would have on my life and I quickly lost that idea. Now I'm just drawing in a sketch book. If I ever get back to doing graphics, I might get a tablet. For now, I'm going to stick with spending my money on figures and kits.

I bought a Wacom Graphire a while back to use instead of my mouse in order to help relieve the carpal tunnel pain I was having then (which I since fixed with proper exercise!). In truth, I'd wanted one for a long time.

It did help my wrists for a time, but I never got used to it as a mouse replacement or as an interface to sketch directly onto the computer.

It sad unused for months, but just recently I've been using it a LOT for touchups, adjustments, and redraws in Photoshop, especially when I'm editing manga to prep it for translation. It's gone from an occasional handy novelty to an indespinsable tool of the trade. Now I'm wondering if I should have gotten one with buttons.

Hopefully my Photoshop work will be the practice I need to become comfortable with sketching directly on the computer, and skipping the paper stage.

I want one of their touch screens in a bad way, but I just don't NEED one yet, so I won't be purchasing that piece of technology bliss.

Did you find that you had a hard time adjusting to it?

Wacom's are very very nice tablets, got to use a big 12x12 while I was going to school. Just wish I could justify the cost of one for the little messing around that I do with graphics. I have tried one of the small 4x5 tablets and they are just too cramped for me. Wacom also is now making wide tablets 6x11 and 12x19 for those folks with wide screen monitors.

Wacom tablet is the best thing you can do for your wrist. Everyone ought to be using it. Once you get use to it, there is no going back, no matter what you use it for.

Question: What is the correct pronunciation of the word Wacom? All my life I thought it was "WA-Com" and folks here likes to call it "Wai-com".

I've got a cheap Genius 8x6 tablet about a year ago. I barely use it, the biggest problems are that it seems that I cannot draw a circle if I'm not looking at my hand :P, and that the sketching (sp?) tools on the art software needs far too much presure to work.
OTOH, photo retouching with the tablet is really nice and much much easier than with a mouse.
Oh, and mine came with one of those useless mouses too, only that mine need s a battery to work.

Putting aside that I wanted a tablet since ever, I buy it for using it with Truespace, but the built-in tablet support is crap.

I started with 3d modelling on the C64 and the Amiga, just for fun, but just recently I started earn money with this.

For a long time I used the lower-end model, they call it the Graphire in the States, at the smallest size of 5"x4". I felt the need to upgrade to a more modern model and decided to get the same model you chose, and my god the differences are astounding! I must admit that I've not been able to use it much of late with classes kicking me in the rear, but I hope to do a bit more development on things over the summer. Oh, I didn't notice if it was answered or not already, but its 'wah-ko-mu' (ワコム). ^^

Second: I have a Wacom tablet, but the pen broke accidentally, and now I need to buy a new pen, and they're not exactly that cheap! -_-;

Anyway, good to be back! ^_^ Check out my site now - it's an art/figure blog. ^^

Danny you really are a polymath.

I am mostly mouse bound, but the office i used to work in some of the guys swore by their tablets. I used them for a couple of days but found myself cursing quite a lot :S

I am still thinking of getting one though, just got to get passed the learning curve >_

i use a graphic tablet (monitor type) for work. its quite damaging on the eyes though.

In the end, drawing on paper gives the best feel of all...

Call me old school, but I have never gotten used to tablets. The stuff we do at work is graphic intensive and relies heavily on modern technology. However when it comes to drawings, I still prefer paper and pencil. It feels less restricted during the initial design process. However, I have to admit that tablet is great for presentation and production phases. Kudos to everyone who has mastered the skill!

I used to draw a lot, so I got myself an Intuos3 9x12. I stopped drawing for almost a year, but I'm getting back into it again. Wacom makes a great product. One of my dreams is to have enough extra cash to blow on a Cintiq monitor, so that I can draw directly on the screen.

Wow 24000Yen is cheap, I have Wacom Graphire4 A5 and I paid for it about 33000Yen (800PLZ) about year ago, and Intuos is better than Graphire. Now in my cuntry(and generally in Europe) you need to pay about 59000Yen(official price on Wacom Europe website 357€) for Intuos3 A5. I need to move to Japan :P And I'm curious how much is for Wacom Cintiqu in Japan?

I was thinking about getting one similar a while back but backed out at the last minute. Mainly as i wanted to focus on just getting my drawing skills better before forking out the cash.

Focusing on 3D design at the moment however.

The pen with the wheel Danny is the Airbrush.

For me, i use my mouse in tandem with my tablet (im left handed with my pen). So you could always put your mouse on your offhand just to use the scroll wheel. If, like me you have a mouse fashioned for hand shape, use the mouse that came with the tablet - its ambidextrously shaped.

Kudos on getting a Wacom too ;)

Hi Danny, I use a cintiq 21UX at work. If I could afford one, I'd have one at home too, lol. I used to use the old style tablets like the one you have. It took a year to truely master, but I also had the advantage of working with automotive designers. Now that I've been using the cintiq for a year, I've almost lost my old tablet skills. I'm new here, and I noticed your Mirai project. Please visit my blog (http://scags1.blogspot.com) where you can see my current character work all done on the cintiq.

doh! i paid 200 bucks for a dinky 4X6 i think you have the 6X8 or even bigger. I think I got ripped off. The thing is i checked about 3 stores and best buy had it for 30 bux cheaper then the other two (apple store and circuit city) so i thought i was saving money. I found a cool sketching program called sketch book pro. It simplifies the drawing proccess on the computer. Check out alias.com you can get a free 15 (non-consuctive)day trial.

I've been considering getting an intuos, but the cost was pretty daunting for someone with very limited income. Good job having money. Apparently photoshop realism drawing is either absolute crap or really time-consuming without a tablet. One thing I'm wondering about is the size -- where does quality/size and pricing meet?
(ID #46827) Posted on 2007/04/21 03:45
Hey Dan.
I was searching for wacoms and fell upon your website... And right away after seeing that character on the top left, i was shocked as i remember seeing her not to long ago.. And then it clicked. Oh yes! your deviantart page. :) Ok but now i have a question and ive been looking for days and days for purchasing a wacom tablet at its cheapiest. As im sick and tired of using a mouse. I want to learn how to draw nice smooth lines in PS and have fun while doing it. Because ive tried several times with a mouse. And let me tell you ITS HORRIBLE! But i know its not new to you. Anyways so here i am looking for the best price i could look for on an intuos3 9x12. The best price so far i have found is at http://www.futurepowerpc.com/scripts/product.asp?PRDCODE=ACWA-PTZ930AC&REFID=SC&tab=2 for only 377$ But i know that these things cost only like 10$ to make in reality... So im digging up on how i can find it the cheapest... Maybe if i look into the actual contry where wacom is being built, maybe i can get it for a real decent inexpensive price? So right now im looking at foreign country sites looking for the best price. So please Dan, if you can find me a foreign site(japan, china etc etc..) wich they sell a Intuos3 9x12 under 377$ I would be very thankful, and if you want i can give you great sites to save up on your next gadget!

Thank you very much.
sincerly yours
Jesse
