yea i can understand the smoking coming from an asian country everyone smokes.. i swear if one dude pulls his box out, everyone either pulls theirs out or asks the guy for one...you kinda get used to it i guess... but i understand your beef. maybe you should open a non smoking cafe :P make some big bucks there :P
Well every nation has to have the problems don't they? But I have no problem with smoking since my parents use to smoke but they quit a long time ago. But that's pretty bad that people there smoke only to look... cool. @.@
over here in Singapore I think most of the public places are not allowed to smoke, from the cafes to the bus-stops. But theres always a few fagarts that think they look cool by smoking in the restricted areas and making the rest suffer. Our government does employ scare tactic to deter people to smoke. They print scary pictures of lung cancer, throat cancer and all sorts of scary diseases on the cigarette boxes, then they tax it real hard ... but still people smoke. LOL

I smoke lots but try not to do it in close spaces like restaurants and the likes where it might bother other people. Is it true that in jp you can only smoke in specific areas on the street or else you get a fine or smthng like that? I saw that on some show on TV... and because next month I travel to jp, I don't want to get arrested for smoking where I shouldn't xD
Nah I don't smoke, its a personal choice, and I also made a promise to myself that I would not start, so I would not get addicted. I have been around my grandmother (who smokes) so it is not bad in light amounts. If there is a bar really smoking up the place, for the sake of my healthy lungs I would not go in. Im guessing Japan is a bit late in the world movement to restrict smoking. In the State of New Jersey, as far as I know it is illegal to smoke outside of your private property, or something to that accord. Most restauraunts here in Pennsylvania are also banning smoking, but you do get your "smoking or non-smoking" from waiters. Honestly, I don't think it's cool at all, and the stuff about diseases and cancer is true. I wasn't scared into thinking smoking is bad, it's just something I never wanted to do =).
I don't smoke, because it's unhealthy, and even if I did want to smoke, I couldn't because I'm not 18 yet. Maybe this will be the only thing I dislike about Japan.
isnt tht better when all the jap died due to smoking then we can get more job availble there.
In Japan there seems to be mutual co-existance between smokers and non-smokers. Have a look at the funny video. http://japansugoi.com/wordpress/smokers-come-to-japan-video/
It is rather funny how you depict things... Japan is usually well-known for having the best life expectancy rate on Earth. Still you say that a large number of people smoke. Surely Japan changes alot nowadays. It would be interesting to study the impact of this and predict scenarios... I never was interested in smoking, drinking or other deviant behaviors. I guess and upon personal experience that social role models and long-term thinking on health (Think Cancer!) play an important role on personal choices. Danny, will you choose this USB mask you told about us earlier? Or will you try to change some minds with the Darth Vader costume and his typical "asthmatic" voice? At 3den: You're SO opportunistic. But if you think like this, maybe there won't be any good employers left there. LOL. *sarcasm of the day* At Alafista OTAKU: I have been to Singapore once to visit my relatives. Laws are so strict there it's crazy (the funniest being no chewing-gum in the subway). But I appreciate this a lot... So clean there. And yes, there will always be strange ones who will not observe rules, as always...
I don't smoke and never will(I need the money.lol) but my girlfriend does.
Before and after the 2000 Olympic Games, the Australian Government banned smoking in public areas and all restaurants. On the cigarette packets there are even health warnings with graphic images of the results of smoking. Although I don't know if that does any good but its a start. I don't mind smoking at all. I do it at time like when I'm stressed out or when going out I'm a casual smoker. Also that Smoking Area looks awfully like the one outside Shibuya station, the one near that dog statue. I've been there and smoked there as well, lol.
This Bun-En technology intrigues me; it's almost like the Ionic Breeze we have here in NA. I hope it's not as useless though.
Gotta be fun for the entire branch of medicine from the GPs to the radiologists to the oncological surgeons then onwards to the Palliative Care physicians. Oh btw, did I mention that they treat their doctors there with utmost respect and reverence? Its got to be heaven

Hey, if you plan on coming back to Seattle, don't forget Emerald City Comic Con is March 31-April 1 :)
Occasional cigars is not considered smoking. So I am not a smoker Anyway, cigarettes are expensive in Singapore. You have to pay more than 600yen for a pack of smokes
i don't smoke and i have no plans to smoke a ciggy in the future ^^ here in the Philippines, some major cities like makati banned smoking in public areas and there are some designated smoking areas
im sad to say that i have to admit that i am an avid chain smoker... X(
I don't like smokers :p It's really sad to see more and more people smoking. Though over here, there's been measures to reduce the number of places people can smoke at.
There are actually some smokers that go out of their way so as to not bother you with the smoke but there are also some that doesn't care and just blows smoke in your face. Primary reason why I don't like smoking and why I don't smoke is because it really smells bad and tastes even worse. :D

I think that here in Sweden where I live, the Goverment´s Health department estimates that 40% of the swedish adults smoke. That ranges from 18 year olds up to 99, male and females. 50% who smokes in Japan is really a High amount. Enough about smoking, I like to say that I really like your blog, keep up the good work!!
I say smoke all you want. Just dont exhale.
I hate smoke of cigarettes, I prefer cannabis from time to time...
i hate passive smoking =( Australia always have these "gruesome" advertisements and images on packages of cigarette showing the after effects of smoking on ppl (eg gangrene foot, cancers, stained teeth) but i doubt half the ppl will ever get the msg of smoking doing you damage.
I only smoke canabis (but I practice sport at least 4 times a week... ^^ ) And I don't like smokers in restaurant ! :)
I'm a smoker and in Singapore, we smokers have to put up with some real idiots. As in Japan, we do have smoking and non-smoking sections at restaurants and coffeeshops. In fact, the smoking section is limited to only 20% of the total seating at the establishment. There have been cases where we get idiots who are non-smokers who sit IN the smoking section, and then complain, very loudly, of how they can't stand the smoke from cigarettes. I don't about the rest of you guys, but I honestly think its ridiculous.
Dont know which is worse. Smell of somebodys smoke or smell of somebodys fart.
Smokers Suck... Butts that is... Smokers suck butts. (and should kiss them too) I need an air horn here in NYC so that can scare the sh*t out of smokers who blow smoke in ppl's faces, I can't stand it. my cubicle mate can leave his seat, go down 15 floors, have a butt, and return to his seat smelling just like smoke, disgusting.

Well, at least you don't have to put up with the smoking on public transport too like over here. Can hardly sit on the upper deck without passive smoking. Especially when one of the smokers sit right behind you... As for dining places, I don't see that many people smoking.
I live in kentucky... the highest grossing legal export is tabacco (marijuana is our highest but is illegal). More than likely, the tobacco in the cigarettes being smoke by your friends was produce here or in one of the other tobacco producing states in the U.S. Although, I suppose they may have been produced in china... The stuff is literally everywhere. I mean seriously growing everywhere you look. We have some of the highest smoking population numbers in the united states. Even with all of that said, the percentages you listed are insanely high! You guys make Kentucky look like we're afraid of cigarettes!

I enjoy cigars on a daily basis, but i'm courteous enough not to smoke them near others.
Oh man...I just don't understand it..Smoking is as good as taking a suicide slowly..Why would most people risk their lives while thinking that smoking is cool?! My advice to all^^: Do quit smoking early and enjoy a healthy lifestyle...As the saying goes...A healthy man is a happy man..:D
You would think that with a $10 price tag on every pack of smokes them people would have learned their lessons....

Haha, same here in my country ... everyone just seem to smoke .... very irritating. I just cannot stand it ....
mmm... smoking is bad. i would love to go to japan for the okaku gundam stuff... but afrid of getting 2nd hand smoke from everyone that smokes in japan.. ahah.

It's been almost a year since I last posted something. True... smoking is hazardous however it's also extremely addicting. For ppl under alot of stress from work and school(like me) you become addicted to cigs for the stress relief. People get the impression that it's a piece of cake or pie which ever you refer that one can simply drop the habbit. Easily said then done laddies and gents.

I'd never tell that there could be so many smokers in Japan. I'm constantly trying to stop smoking, or at least smoke the less I can, lately I completely stopped smoking when I'm at home and I'm really happy about that, next step shoul be stopping at university, but it's a lost battle... =(
I'm an athletic person(nerd/jock hybrid), i love basketball and bodybuilding, so smoking is a big NO for me. But i tried smoking when i was 17 and i quit after a year or so.
Off topic comment. Hey Danny, just want to let you know that as I clicked on one of the vote options for the poll while in the new version of the site, the display reverted back to old version. I like the pie chart in the new version though (would also be nice to have a vote count).
Never smoked, and never will. Its one of the few things that i dislike about Japan, still, there's far more things that i dislike about living in the UK.
I heard that Japan's government is trying to reduce the amount of smokers by designating more areas as non-smoking areas like in restaurants and areas around doors and windows like the U.S.
I went to japan when i was about 12, but i did remembering seeing a lot of people smoking. >_> I think that is why i saw some of the people wearing masks.

Well... some statistics: http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/hea_tob_tot_adu_smo-health-tobacco-total-adult-smokers Japan is ranked 45th while my country (Argentina) is 15th :p
I quit smoking four years ago. I have not had a single cigarette since I stopped, but every once in a while I do want one...but only because I think the smoke would be picturesque. Like a lot of people who quit, I just can't stand the smell of them anymore. Most of my friends still smoke though.
Interesting list... only thing is that USA isnt on the list... even countries with 0 smoker stats are listed but no usa... hmm...
i dont mind people smoking. one of my brothers does and alot of people i know. its just when all that smoke gets blown towards you is when it gets annoying. im surprised at how many people smoke in japan.
Char, That could be a cache problem. Will look into it. Minaseさん、 実は80%じゃないかと思った。 Bleem!, Smoke. Robert, Thanks *^^* Sakurasushi, Nice Vid ^^
Interesting that we don't see a decrease in smoking in Japan. It's not only us Gaijin whom comment about cigarette smoke, but also Japanese. Many Japanese friend and colleagues have said they enjoy their time working here in the states. Usually I hear something to the effect that Japanese offices are not bad to work in if you can handle the smoke.
oh danny, i remember reading one of your posts that mentioned about people smoking in japan. Here in Washington DC specifically, a lot of people smoke on the street or by the entrance to the metro. I hate that, people can smoke as much as they want too, but not making such choice for others who does not want to smoke LOL
thats a bad percentage., and a horrible environment for me to be in, seeing as I quit smoking 4-5 months ago.

When I was in Tokyo it was a nightmare entering and leaving the hotel, it was like a 80s rock video smoke smoke smoke.

cigarette smoke/smoking sux .... =P

In Australia, there is a ban on all cigarette advertising. No billboards, no magazine ads, no TV commericals. All pubs and clubs are also now smoke free except for outside areas (beer gardens). No smoking on public transport either No smoking is allowed in shopping centres, most hotels also ban smoking. essentially the only place you can smoke now in Australia is in your own house or in your backyard/out and about. It's great, I'm going to Japan in a few weeks and to be honest, this is only thing i'm not looking forward to. perhaps if Japan introduces similar laws about where you can smoke it will be an even cleaner place. That or start doing what we do here. Have horrible images of what happens to you if you smoke on the packets: http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-drugs-tobacco-warning-packs-B.htm http://www.health.gov.au/internet/wcms/publishing.nsf/Content/health-pubhlth-strateg-drugs-tobacco-warning-packs-A.htm Actually can be funny. You can even make a funny face with the right combination of face parts
all over ireland now is smoke free in poblick bildings its great you can now go in to a pub and not choke to death viva la ireland ^_^
Itay is smoke free, all bars, pubs and restaurants are smoke free or else should have a separated room for smoke addicted. and the strange things is that nobody is complaining about it and I havent seen anyone breaking the rules, seems that the firsts ones to be happy are the ones that smoke
Came back from a casino during a long weekend... All my clothes smell like bacon gone bad (if that's possible). >_< I hope one day no one will smoke. (I know it is the same like saying I hope one day there is no war...)
Try visiting Michigan or France, everyone = everyone smokes.
Man, im glad that it's illegal to smoke in public places in Ontario, that would suck to have to put up with smoke in a restaurant or at work!
lol I must have gone through some japan smoking program cuz after my 1 week trip to Japan last year, I came back smoking. Not a heavy smoker though; last time I smoked was about a month ago. Also when I was in Japan, a friend and I went to a maid cafe (I think mai:lish) after two days of searching and sat in a non smoking section. Funny thing was, we sat at a table that was right next to the smoking section just like you. The only indication of division between smoking and non-smoking was this little fence whose height was lower than the backs of the seats we were sitting in lol.
luckily for me, german cafes and bars are bound to be smoke free, at last! myself being a pro-active non-smoker, thought that there wouldn't be such a high "attachment" rate in japan. guess i was wrong ^^
and why not? not only is smoking sexy looking, its a great way to relieve tension. ...to bad your breath smells like sh*t.
I smoked during my teens, stupid me. My dad died from lung cancer when I was still a baby, and my wife's mom just recently died from complications of her heart which in part was caused by her excessive smoking habit... I like it around here because there are laws against smoking restaurants and even bars. Back in Wisconsin it wasn't like that and I remember even the "non-smoking" sections were stuffy and hard to breathe in. Once you stop smoking after you've done it and it's completely out of your system (at least in my case) you become ultra-sensitive to cigarette smoke. I can smell it a mile away and it irritates my eyes, lungs and nose now. Never touch another cigarette for the rest of my life.
