Nav2.0

Took me longer than I thought but Nav2.0 is now live. Took into account much of the feedback you gave me and will be implementing more of your requests over time.
So why the radical change? The main reason was that the old UI was not scaling together with the community features that I am/was rolling out - as soon as I deal with a few bug fixes I will start to work on the next feature which I think you may like. I want this place to be more than just a blog and move towards an Otaku/Japan portal. However, I do intend to continue to write stuff everyday and bring you coverage from events like the Tokyo Anime Fair this week ^^.

The site looks pretty much how I want it to look in Firefox but can look quite crap in places in IE6, IE7 and Safari - didnt have capacity to QA on other browsers. CSS is not complete and will work that over time too.
Above: First notice the Display options menu - yes it looks crap but will do something about it soon ^^; Nav2.0 view is the default view. Choose Legacy view to switch the middle column to your previous browsing experience. From Legacy view, you can switch to Nav2.0 anytime. A cookie is set so you dont have to do this all the time. The URL will stay the same too.

You can also choose to show/hide comments too. This does not work in Safari at the moment and will work on fixing it soon. The first post shows the last 5 comments. 2nd, 3rd, 4th post shows the last 3 comments and the remaining posts dont show any comments (on the top page).

If you hate the new top page, you can always choose the previous design but I wont be updating the content in the side columns.
Above: This is for folks reading the RSS - default Nav2.0 view.
Above: This is what the site will look like for those who have set the middle column to Legacy view. The Random Posts on the left column change to Recent Posts.
Above: Those who hate comments can hide them - Safari fix soon-ish (maybe ^^;)
Above: If the post is a gallery post, when you click the first photo, it will dim to display these options. I done this because many will click to view the whole post, but then previous users may expect to enlarge the image.
Above: Added Snap Preview for the Otakurls so you can see how NSFW the links are before clicking ^^; Not working in IE for some reason but will work on fixing it.
Wanted to show you the progress of the top page redesign which you can find here. The cur...(more)

Why not? I'll use 2.0 since it looks alot more snazzier. Keep up the good work Danny and before you know it, you'll have the top site blog in Japan. :P

Nice work on the new layout of the site. *applause* Although I still prefer the legacy view in the middle column. :D

Btw, SnapPreview isn't working in IE7. For some reason the SnapPreview icon beside the otakurls are not showing up. Works fine with FireFox though.

Wow, This is some of the nicest and most well thought out web design work I've ever seen.

I'm impressed. I can't decide between the new view or the legacy middle. I just wish I could see a little of the top article in the new view.

Either way, the new design is beautiful.

Both of the 2.0 alternatives are great in my sense.

Let's say I'd choose version 2.0 Legacy if I ever felt overloaded with the main description of the article, latest comments and the poll (I don't feel like turning one of the features off individually)...

To be able to freely and easily switch from one to the other is a great option.

Well, new look sure looks good. But, it's kinda bloated. I'm having quite a distraction since the main column wasn't wide enough. And there's not enough boundary between the main and complementary content.

Err, and I prefer bigger photos instead of small thumbnails in frontpage. Bigger photos draws more attention and gives more satisfaction and deeper preview of the post. Photos are one of the things I love in your site.

Keep up the good work. Thumb up ^^

@Akhmad Fathonih's comment about how the new layout looks bloated & to have bigger pics then thumbnails, the thumnails are the just to show the topics so it keeps the site 'tidy' also I should think that Danny is taking into account the amount of people who will be visiting this site that DONT have a fast Connection. Sure most people MAY do but there is a small percentage that do not. so Danny must also cater for their needs also.

I do not think the new layout is bloated? Is it a crime to have everything looking nice, well layed out & tidy with the implementation of smalling things in the nav systems to give the site a little more 'eye candy'? Most things is down to personal preferance. or just the the fact that the new nav system will be 'more to the point' & will make this site easier to nav around & you can also encorporate newer features into this nav too? I'm no web developer like you but I did design a 500Mb gundam fansite in HTML for a college project (the site was due for release but webspace was too expensive & nobody would help me!)

So Please put yourself in other peoples shoes that dont have as fast a connection as others....

The design is nice, but I agree that it's very busy and hard to read, with all the images and links and ads. I don't mind them, but as they are now, they're kind of overwhelming.

I think it'd be a good idea to separate the blog posts from the images/links/ads/etc., and make the space for blog entries wider. It'd make it easier to read the entries. I looked at the site in Opera and IE, and there's quite a lot of unused space on both sides. I think it'd be good to utilize it.

Wow, I would say that this layout is pretty neat.

Your otaku portal idea seems exciting, would look forward to it.

I wonder how much effort it would take to actually learn enough computing stuffs to be able to setup something so cool as your site.

For now, I am using the full Nav2.0 layout. It is a decent enough balance between the elements; however, I can understand why some comment that it is "bloated" or "crowded". Where you are moving more towards a community portal, the real estate given over to Otakurls/Otavids seems appropriate.

One thing I hope comes with the future community portal plans are more RSS feeds. Personally, I read the site via the RSS feed; if an article is too long, has more content than in the feed, or has me wanting to comment, then I click into the individual post. I rarely am actually on the main page. I've also created RSS feeds via feed43.com to track the latest Otakurls and Otavids. Again, if I want to comment on one of those, then I click into that specific page.

Keep up the great work; I like where the site is headed overall.

僕の場合、ほとんど毎日このページを確認しているので、沢山の記事を見渡せるレガシーヴューよりも、ページを開いたときにコラムがサッと読めるデフォルトヴューの方が使い易いので。

At Akiraman:
Well, Mirai Suenaga's page is still there! It's a bit hidden though!
To access it, simply go to the main page. On Mirai-Chan's image you can see in small~ blue letters the following: "Who is Mirai Suenaga?", click on it and voila!

I really like the current version of Nav2.0. It has a clean look, it's easy to navigate and presents the information much better than the older top page. Very nice work Danny.

I like Snap Preview. Will you be able to use it elsewhere on your site? Have you added the options menu for gallery post? I can't get it to work in Firefox. Then again I have only tried out Nav2.0 in Firefox.

Also, new top page is much easier to use in Opera on my Windows Mobile device. Maybe someday in the future you will consider building a mobile page?

I like it, though compared to the nav 2.0 beta a few weeks ago I still find it a bit 'info overload' - like its the same as before, just re-arranged.

When it comes to things like blogs and forums, I need to just quickly check for updates every day, read it and then move on. Due to the IE freezing problem and occasionally long loading times, this becomes a bit of a hindrance when it comes to checking the site once or twice a day.
It would be good if the links, associates, otakurls, otavids and random posts were put into a different section to cut down on the clutter, and can be accessed when you want.
Perhaps when/ if you integrate a forum to the site you could remove the comments and otakurls from the daily blog entries and add a link pointing to the respective automatically created thread in the forum? That way, more immersive interaction, feedback and cross-talk will be possible, whilst keeping the blog side of it light and clutter-free.
I would also prefer the entirety of text in the latest post overview to be visible without a click required. The pie chart seems a little frivolous too - most people can figure out percentage amounts in their head anyway.

Dont take it the wrong way - i like the new look and i appreciate your efforts in improving your site, im just trying to be constructive and would like to help in making the site the best you can make it! :-D
