A few of you asked how Mac life was lately. Been using my MacBook Pro since last Nov and cant believe how fast it is compared to my previous PowerBook. Ran into a few annoyances when moving my data over from the PowerBook - mainly permissions and a few MYSQL socket problems. The magnet socket is a nice welcome but never use the built in camera or remote.

Got the Apple Cinema Display recently - funnily enough Microsoft employees get up to 12% off Apple products - no wonder there are so many Mac/iPod users at MS!
Tried to use the display as my primary monitor which means a closed laptop. Dont know about people with this setup but it just does not work for me. The machine wakes up at the slightest move of the mouse - whats worse is that the system wakes up after a few seconds if *anything* is plugged into the USB sockets at the back of the display. Was worried about the display not being bright enough when considering the purchase but its very bright.

Switched to using Mac OSX in April 2005. I wanted to try out OSX after using Windows for almost ten years. The first purchase was a Mac Mini and thought it was worth investing the 60,000 yen yen to try it out. I fell in love with the system and immediately ordered a PowerBook. The Mac Mini is now attached to the plasma for browsing and watching opensource videos.
Took me a while but I eventually got my wife to switch to Mac too ^^. Maintaining Windows was such a pain. I spent too much of my time maintaining rather than computing. Maintaining OSX is such a breeze and making a copy of the system is too easy. You can even back up your system to a different partition on your iPod and boot from it. You can even make encrypted copies of your system or data and hide the hard disk around your friends house when they are not looking (always best to keep an off-site copy of your data).

The best thing about mac for me is that its Unix based which means my localhost environment is the same as what runs this site. I used to have a ton of problems trying to run Apache on a Windows machine. Have also been able to beef up my Unix command line skills too ^^;

If you are fed up of using Windows - you may want to just give OSX a try. Now that Mac machines are now all Intel - you can always switch back to Win anytime. You dont have to worry about some of your fave Win apps not running on a Mac as now there are apps like Parallels that allow you to run OSX and Win at the same time.

When my company is up and running - all the office machines will be Macs to save on hiring a network admin guy/gal.

Wow, the discount is really ironic funny! I barely touch a Mac, but the design of the hardwares are art!

How big is your display? I really envy that monitor. Bet you dish quite sum for that.

Macs are beautiful - everyone needs to switch to them. The prices are also becoming more reasonable. What are everyone's opinions on the iPhone, which is coming out in the summer?

Q: Why do we need security numbers if we're signed in?

After reading this, I really, really miss my PowerBook :( .

At my last job, the CFO kept wanted a solution that let him use his fancy new display as his primary screen and close the laptop. He had similar problems as you have. It wasn't until I got him a docking station for his PB that everything worked the way he wanted. Not to mention the time save in not having to plug and unplug everything into the laptop. Might help you, the one I got him was from an outfit called BookEndz.com (I'm not affiliated with them, just was satisfied with them).

I've been using macs for 15 years now, and OS X is, by far, one of the best operating systems I've ever used. It's not only sleak and full of eye candy, but it's fast and powerful.

iono but the really old macs (like those as big as monitors) has put me off from macs totally. i dunno if its the computer or the school's low maintanence but they're like slower than my old windows 98 pc.
i had used windows all my life n neva got a major problem with it. infact now i'm actually scared of upgrading to vista due to that security system thing.

Wow promoting Apple when your company just release a new operatiing system? I kid...anyway the ability to run Windows on a Mac is enticing so I'm torn between getting Mac or building a new PC. Staying away from Vista though.

I switched to a 24" Imac about 2 months ago and can safely say I will never personally own a Windows PC again. Mac OS X is just a awesome stable environment to work in. The display is bright and crisp and it is a dream to watch anime on as the colors are perfect. My only gripe is the Finder, it's just not powerful enough, so I went and bought Pathfinder by a company called Cocoatech. If you are having a problem using finder, check it out

No wonder about the 12% off Apple products as Bill Gates is owner of a good percent of the company, and you can't bypass Carlos Slim this last one owner of a monopolic telephone company of Mexico.
And now to the real issue, yes apple os is friendly and works great. I have a G4 736 (I know an oldie).

Sorry I just can't bring myself to use a mac. Linux yes,and windows but i guess i am just anti-mac. I will admit the new mac books are nice looking and all. But trying to run apps native to windows is a pain. Plus if your doing any gaming you might as well forget it. Danny you should give Ubuntu a try or another Linux distro a try. If you like the way OSX runs you may fall in love with Ubuntu.

Hmm...thanks for this post danny, its very helpful, cos i for one will be looking at getting a laptop for university at the end of next year, and i have always been torn between Mac and Windows...

Thing is, it depends really on what ill be using it for, but seeing as i am going to be using it mainly for graphic design, i seem to get the feeling a Mac might be more suitable, but i have plenty of time to decide i guess.

What do you think? for running graphic design programs and such, do you think Mac would be better?

i thought about getting a mac mini for bt, video viewing and/or streaming only, hooking up to an lcd tv. but i do have a few concerns:

video playback speed at 1080p? or even 720p? codec for rmvb and xvid or any of the other weird codecs the open source crowd use? possible to get it work with front row? there are no media player classic, so what should i use?

i had a pc doing the same thing before, it was noisy and hard to maintain. mce is just not cutting it for me, tons of features i don't even care about.

I've been using a Mac at work for years and I switched at home last year and had a few converts also. When the Wintel people get over that "but it's a Mac," they'll discover how much life is easier with it. I got a Mini and MacBook. I totally but abandoned Windows, except for a couple of progs. If anyone has Mac questions, I'll be more than happy to answer them.

chibifish,
Unlike Windows, you dont have to worry about Codecs - its all in VLC.

Ayame,
Welcome!

loukito, Sorrento,
Soon ^^;

Arekusu,
the apps that you would run are available on both mac and win. I personally prefer mac though as Expose allows drag and drop of icons a breeze.

Nodle,
Heard about Ubuntu but also heard about people giving up on it.

Matt_,
There are some pics a while back - have a look in the Japan section under "ginza"

thewrinklyninja,
I tried pathfinder but still had probs with it...

KCA,
Before the end of this month I will announce ^^

xjaymanx,
I dont remember changing anything. Have you tried Google Reader instead? I switched from bloglines as I found Google Reader to be much better in terms of usability.

Tsubaki,
You?...

Rock Jehiel Manuel,
^-^

penpen,

Royal,
Will fix that but its not a priority at the moment...

I, too, made the switch to the Mac last year from Windows/Linux and as a Unix guy, I love it. I have a similar setup to you (although I'm still using the last-generation Powerbook) and am using a Griffin iCurve stand to hold my PB out of the way... With it in place I can use both the Cinema Display and the PB LCD (with an external keyboard/mouse) as a dual monitor setup... here's a pic of my work desk: http://www.mcgeecorp.com/downloads/workdesk.jpg

I have a lot of Mac experience but I have never licked them. The limited hardware is a deal breaker for me. I like being able to choose who I buy my notebook from and I build my own desktops. Building your own desktops makes you real picky about components. Apple machines have good form factor but they don't have the hardcore hardware components down to the power supply like Alienware does. Also, I prefer Linux to OSX even though I am primarily a Windows user.

I purchased MacBook Pro (with every conceivable upgrade and pack) and it has served me until today, three years old.

I am never buying another non Mac laptop, ever, again. Love the system, love the interface, love the design.
