And theres me thinking that 100Mbps FTTH internet connection was value for money at 5,000 yen per month.
JCOM announced that users in Japan will be able to enjoy Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) 160Mbps connections from this April for a monthly fee of 6,300 yen. The only bad thing is that you only get 10Mbps upstream where with my FTTH (Fiber To The Home) connection I get about 50Mbps up (results here for those who are interested)
If you are thinking of hosting something at home then you would be better of with the FTTH connection.

BTW, this image has nothing whatsoever to do with this post. Its from a game called Cheerfull (NSFW) that came out today ^^;

My connection is awful. :( 6 Meg down and 3 Meg up for freaking $40+/month!!! The sad part is, it's the only one available down here, besides a slower DSL company.

Funny, my internet speed use to be heck of quick until we were having too many problems with the service and decided to switch to DSL. It's almost the same speed but not much of a difference.

Nice picture btw. :P

Here, 8.0Mbps download / 1.0Mbps upload "dedicated business line" costs $200 bucks/month (thats 20000 yen approx) from Rogers Cable. Man, Rogers got NOTHING on NTT.

ADSL 'MAX' as they say in the UK, which is in theory 8mb down/256kb up. However unless I log in at 7am on a Monday morning I'm lucky if I get 2mb. BT (I'm sure you remember them) have rigged the wholesale market and ADSL is pretty bad now. I'm hoping to move to 24mb ADSL2+ soon from someone outside of the BT network.

I am with an ISP called DEMON.Ive had a few problems with them in the past.main problem being that not long after we bought our 2mb unlimited package they took off the lower speed packages & made our package the standard package so they had to upgrade all the other users who wasnt on our package, to our package & im guessing there were quite a lot of ppl as my net started getting lower then a 512mb connection. even then my ping was through the roof! I couldnt play online gaming until it was 1am!!! the only time when i had my FULL connection & a stable ping. anyway this kept up for a good 6-8months when they finally decided to upgrade older contract members with a free 8mb upgrade which i have now & i have no complaints. Ive not yet seen my downloads reach 8mb but ive seen it go up to 6mb which is more then enough even though it aint full on 8Mb/ps. so long as they keep it like that i cant complain. but during the time ive been with my ISP they have been awarded SEVERAL online awards for giving a great retro 56k feel(no joke!)

ONLY!? 10Mbps upstream?? Well, looks like I have to find a way to take out the person who decided that we can live on 128kbps... and our down stream is like 7Mbps. Although they have brought out a plan that says you can have as fast internet connection as your line allows, but the line doesn't allow that much and it will depend on how many ppl is on line in your area and how far you are with your exchange. Not only that they limit your download speed if your data up/download exceeds 700MB a day. This country Suck big time!

I am currently on a 24mbit connection, paying £20/month. This seems to be the best deal on offer atm in the UK, and I am very happy with it, a roll-out of fiber connections would certainly be welcome though.

Danny,

Love you site... Always been fascinated by the idicyncracies of the Japanese, and my wife lived in Misawa from 2004-2007, and tells me tales often.

When I saw 160Mbps, my jaw nearly dropped... I thought my 15Mbps was good, it's shit compared to what you can get! Anyhow, I thought you might be interested in this article: "UK Passes Japan in Broadband Penetration" - http://www.websiteoptimization.com/bw/0611/

Keep up the good work... (and go get a job at Apple Japan before Uncle Fester makes you use that steaming pile of shit, OS X wannabe, Vista...

God. I live in Australia and our internet is so bad. Currently i'm on a 1.5mbit plan with 14gb downloads. I have to pay 50 AUS dollars a month - which is around 4600 yen. It's considered a good internet plan over here. -_-
