Itasha

The word Itasha (痛車(いたしゃ))describes a car that has been plastered with anime stickers and other form of decoration. Literally means "pain(痛い(itai)) car(車(sha))" and for some reason the kanji for "pain" was chosen as it sounds like the "ita" from イタ車(itasha)which means Italian Car.
These pictures were taken by Yoshimu-san and you can see more at his blog. Personally I think these cars look cool and cant wait for my mascot to be ready so that I do my car up too ^^

Hmm ... it'd be nice to doll up a car like tat, though I probably need to learn to drive and get my own car first.

But then, it'd probably be tough to pick up girls with such a car.

I love anime and I love my cars, but still, I wouldn't combine the two to do this. If I had a show car for Autosalon or something I would consider it, but I'd be scared if it got scratched.

This stickers are made for only one person or can you buy them easily ?

I'd do it if I had a garage to keep the car in during the modification. I'd repaint my car, which is suffering from old age (it's going "gray" [primer showing]), and put my web comic's main character there (maybe).

So it's the post you promised to us. All right!

I feel that the true essence of otaku-ism is found in Japan, so Itasha is more than okay there. But in other countries, it would leave a lot of people spooked and bewildered as older generations are unfamiliar with anime.

I find it great to express your tastes to the public and that some stickers can change your car completely!
At worst, every taste is in nature, and there are many eroge fanatics in this world, so itasha should be fine in comparison...

I like this idea, and if one asked me about trying it, I'd reply "Why not?"... If it's not about ending having my car stolen or vandalized, that is. ^-^

If I had a "spare" car I'll definitely go for it lol. I would like to apply more "discrete" stickers to my car though... Like a A.E.U.G. or Zeon logo car sticker. Never found a place that sells that kind of stickers for cars anyway. Any info is highly appreciated ^^

Considering how big is the anime industry, maybe advertisers could start using cars as the advertising support. That would be pretty interesting.

To Gordon Pekeur:

Well, there has been at least a commercial plane (I think it belonged to JAL -Japan Airlines-) covered with huge Pokémon stickers, itasha style... as far as I remember.

Though it has been many years ago already.
And I'm sure there are a lot more examples like that one.

So it's not that recent for a phenomenon...

These kind of cars were first know as ITAKA (Itai-car) and first appearead at the parking in front of the train station near Ariake (Tokyo Big Sight) during the Comiket a couple of years ago...
