日本語/Japanese  Wed 10/11 21:22 JST
One method that I used to learn Japanese back in the good ol days was to watch Japanese dramas. Then at one point all the dramas seem to revolve around the he-likes-her-but-she-likes-his-best-friend (who is actually her long lost brother ( vomiting noise )).
However, the dramas this year have been rather good. Just finished watching Taiyo No Uta staring the ever so cutie pie Erika Sawajiri and am now looking forward to “Sailor Fuku to Kikanjyuu” (セーラー服と機関銃) – translated as “Sailor uniform and machine gun” and Teppan Shoujo Akane (鉄板少女アカネ!!) – translated as Teppan Girl Akane!! #w#1,2, Sailor Fuku to Kikanjyu#w# Sailor Fuku to Kikanjyu is a remake of an old film where main character and school girl Izumi Hoshi becomes the head of a pack of Yakuza. Izumi is played by another cutie pie Masami Nagasawa which makes this a SMW (Simply Must Watch) for me – who can resist a drama with cutie pies running around in a sailor outfit shooting seven shades of bantha pudoo out of bad dudes with a machine gun? The first installment of this series goes on air this Friday at 10PM on TBS. I’m sure you will learn lots of Yakuza type words like “Kono Yarou!” (この野郎!(このやろう!)) or nuance to be roughly translated as “you bastard!”
You can see a wee bit of the drama at YouTube.
Below: The official site has more including this cool wallpaper of cutie pie Masami Nagasawa.
#w#3,4,Teppan Shoujo Akane #w# Teppan Shoujo Akane is the other drama that starts this week on Sunday on TBS too which stars cutie pie Maki Horikita. Maki plays Akane who sets out to find her missing father or something. The Drama is based on some manga which I know absolutely sod all about – but who cares as long as Maki is in it!
You can catch a glimpse of this drama at the official site has a few clips too. You can probably learn many Japanese cooking words such as Yakechatta (焼けちゃった(やけちゃった)) or “Its burnt”…
Below: cutie pie Maki Horikita.

hmmm... interesting post Danny. never in a million years would I ever think there would be a drama/soap with a girl in school uniform turning bad guys into swiss cheese with a machine gun.

Japanese dramas did fall into a rut for a while... I was starting to feel numb too. ^o^ Anyway, they are addictive once one starts to watch. I also find them very useful in improving my Nihongo skills. Do I ever need to improve my Nihongo... ^^; I'm still watching some of the summer dramas but thanks for the recommendations! These are two dramas I will want to watch along with a few others...

The only station here in S.F that shows anything Japanese airs a couple of dramas and a game show. But mostly it just shows the news late at night. In my Japanese class, the anime fans claim anime is good to learn Japanese, but their idea of anime is Naruto >:( Now if it was Gundam, that'd be a different story.

Not a fan of Japanese or Korean drama due to their style of acting which is rather "over", and the somewhat cliche ideology which they try to shove.

But I do watched Japanese drama every now and then purely for amusement only. Sofar have failed to forced myself to finish any of the Korean drama series.

Definitely enjoy the Japanese drama plugs! Used to like watching some of them several years ago, but it's hard to know what's good/popular. Picked up a copy of Densha Otoko a little while back following your recommendation, and enjoyed that. That'd be great if you could keep mentioning them from time to time!

the thing about Korean Drama I've chose to see so are pretty much love story - whether comical or sad. unfortunately, i didn't like any of those love stories since they seemed too unrealistic or just (forcefully?) overdone. I'll give a try on Japanese drama :) it sure sounds interesting accoring to those discriptions above.

I do like the girl in it though. She looks cuter and cuter the more J-dramas she does. In Nobuta wo produce, she wasn't anything special, but then in Kurosagi she looked nice and now in her new drama where she actually gets to smile and be lively - she's even cuter!
