Many of you have been asking for forums so I have been doing the rounds looking for solutions. I could go with pre-packaged software like PHPBB or WOWBB or write my own software.
One of the problems I have identified with pre-packaged stuff is that many of them dont have basic SEO techniques applied which is one of the reasons why I am inclined to write my own - but I would need a few months dev time before I get something up n running.

If you have any feedback re what sort of pre-packaged stuff you think I should be using, or what sort of features you would like if I made my own - please leave a note. Also let me know if there are things about Figure.fm that you like or get on your nut.

I'd like a good private message system, and a nice way to post images. Those are quite important to me ^^ I think you could best decide on going with PhpBB and altering the code to your liking :) I'd join ^^ I'm a heavy forum user... ^__^;
Love your site btw :3 I really like the japan gallery, you should take more pictures ^^

Hmmm.
I spend lot of time on forums like punbb, phpbb and others which I don't remember the name.
But, I prefer this one: http://forum.hardware.fr/ that is also used by clubic.com, presence-pc.com...
Not really sexy but strong, fast, lots of usefull features...

I have been using and setting up, PhpBB forums and the package is well done.
You could also have a look at http://www.vbulletin.com/index.php which have nice features.

Just a question, what do you want to see/post on the forum ?

one idea if you're going to write your own forum. Make every blog post an automatic forum thread, and every blog comment an automatic reply in that thread, with replies in those threads also showing up as comments on the blog.

If you're still looking for a pretty nice forum software, I suggest you check out Vanilla [ http://getvanilla.com/ ]. To quote, "Vanilla is an, open-source, standards compliant, multi-lingual, fully extensible discussion forum for the web."

But what really takes the cake are the add-ons. If Vanilla doesn't have a certain feature [ for example the SEO techniques you mentioned ], then you can code an extention for it. Beats the heck out of writing your own software from scratch. Well unless you /really/ love want to write your own.

Anyway, I just wanted to give you a heads up about Vanilla. It's still fairly new and not many people have heard about it. It'd be pretty awesome if you decided to use it.
Oh and they've got a pretty friendly community too that'll always help you out. [ http://lussumo.com/community/ ]
