ORB-01 Shiranui Akatsuki has been out for a few days now and it looks like just about all the geeks have one. While the basic frame looks like Strike, I still prefer Strike - for a start, I'm not keen on the gold and the shoulders look a bit on the large side for my taste. Still, Akatsuki is a fine Mecha and the person who modeled this 1/144 HG has done a fine job.
The runners do come in gloss gold but this chap has sanded that all away, done some mods and re-sprayed it matt gold which I prefer - I'm sure other variations would look nicer - if anybody has some links to Akatsuki in different colors, just plonk em in the comments.
Scans are from this months copy of Hobby Japan.

look unexpected nice in the pictures above. They really did a nice job on the gold color! for some reason the picture of the head in third picture looks too shiny..

OMG I LOVE the Akatsuki! I never really noticed how much it looks like Strike...thats beacuse I have yet to find any decent pictures of it! T.T

Oh BTW this is a 1/144th HG not a MG ^.^

Thw thought of having to strip the gold plated surface makes it such a boo boo! Stupid Bandai should come out with a cheaper version which is not gold plated instead and let the consumer have a choice!

i love the akatsuki... why?

cause it took a straight blast from Destiny and deflected it like nothing... hence making shinn look like a noob and dumb... muahahhaha >.<

However, when i get mine (hopefully they will make an 1/100 or 1/60) i want to paint it black like the proto-type pix featured a month ago in HJ.

there are two kinds of mecha fans in this world. Those that "get" gold or pink gundams and those that don't. I'm in the "don't get" camp ;-) Oh well, each to his own! It does look like a very nice kit.

Bandai isn't going to release a 1/100 model of Akatsuki, or any other mobile suit from Gundam Seed Destiny for that matter. They killed it off a long time ago.

Yeah, gold doesn't make much sense at all. The Strike Freedom would look sooo much cooler with grey joints.

That's a beautiful looking Akatsuki. I'd prefer that color gold than that too sleek and shine original paint. The one thing I'd like to see from Bandai is a 1/60 Destiny Gundam. Light-up action just like Strike-Freedom. XD

I just love Akatsuki - it's just so cool and awesome in SEED Destiny. I really hope that Bandai would release the 1-100 scale model for Akatsuki. It's one of those great mecha which are ignored even though they shine in the anime. Another one would be Infinite Justice piloted by Athrun. When is Bandai going to release the 1-100 scale version to match with Strike Freedom?

BTW, why is Dominion in the first picture? It should have being the Archangel right?

(Warning:Very long post)Cool these guys are really ace when it comes to modelling. Also just for those of you who don't want to waste there lives just sanding the gold chrome off the Akatsuki than I reccommend stripping the gold off with Formula 409 and its international variants.Though I don't know the variants or having any links you shold try to contact the makers of the product at www.formula409.com another option is looking for a product that works similarly and testing it using some leftover plastic sprues and leaving it there for 24 hours (time 409 takes to strip chrome)to see if it harms the plastic (Formula 409 does not harm plastic),also just a note if you still see some chrome left just use an old toothbrush,a clean paint brush ,or sandpaper to take it off.Chances are little to no chrome will be left using this method and the used 409 is still good for stripping kits just don't use the used 409 for cleaning your house.I must sound like a spokes person for the product now.Oh yeah and I'm lovin' the new icons Danny Choo.
