What if I said that Sony was secretly installing crap on your PC without you knowing when you inserted a Sony Music CD in your CD drive. And how about if I said that if you tried to uninstall the software from your PC, your drive becomes unusable. Worst still - there are also cloaked files scattered around your PC drive and if you try to remove them, your system is rendered unusable!
Well some people may think that Sony wouldn't do such a thing because it would be such a blow for the company to do so. Well I am only reporting what the press is saying...

Sony DRM Roundup
Sony sued over copy-protected CDs
New virus uses Sony BMG software
Is Sony Hacking your PC?

Now what if I said that Sony in Japan makes products so that they time out (cease to funciton) after the warranty has just finished or when a new line or model comes out for a particular product? The "timer" doesn't 'trigger' for all their products however as they somehow control the timing-out of these products based on their sales and inventory targets.
Well again, you would probably think that Sony wouldn't do such a thing as it would also be a blow for the company. This is not yet official and you can only read what people are saying about it in Japan - I'm only reporting on what they are saying...

Sony Timer

A search for "Sony Timer" (in Japanese) now brings up 285,000 results in Google.
Most Japanese people who are in the loop (especially in IT/Internet) should know about the Sony Timer - ask your Japanese friend about it.
BTW, the Sony Timer does not appear to be installed in their game machines - otherwise they wont make money from the software. The memory carts for PS2 do time out though - like my one did.

Ah yes, I've heard about Sony and their Copy protected cd's that install evil software on your computer with a root-kit. Such an evil concept. The thing that irks me is that viruses can get in through the little backdoor it leaves open! I wonder how Sony is going to get out of this one?

Frightening idea...
Luckily, I think the only Sony products I currently own are game related.
Are there any other companies known to be doing similar things as well?
Please, continue to keep us up to date on the issues with Sony.

I heard that sony released a patch to remove all software that they might have put on our computers. However that doesnt make it right. And if Sony is willing to stoop that low then the timer wouldnt really suprise me.

I still find it so hard to believe that sony could have this "sony timer" installed in its products, i've had sony gadgets for ages and they work great, I've yet to have something go wrong with them...we still have a 29" sony tv that we had bought back in 94 and it still works fine. (its a piece of art that one) :P

This reminds me of a similar incident with Intuit's Turbo Tax and there attempt at sneaking in some extra DRM goodies. Do a google and you'll see similar stories as those of Sony. The PEOPLE won that round, but it seems these corporate goons don't learn from their past.

Oh no! Does this mean that my new PSP will also die like that too .___. Basically, the mentality of North Americans is that we believe that items such as TV's, and automobiles which are made over in Japan, are a lot better than locally made items (e.g. A Ford vechicle versus a Honda vehicle, A Sony Laptop versus a Gateway laptop). I guess its the same mentality in Japan where certain companies (Sony in this case...) are crap whereas other brands are better (e.g. Apple).
