Im thinking of making the switch over to Mac next year once I have finished my current university course, but I am still going to need a windows box for certain 3d/2d applications I use (mainly 3dsmax, autocad). Have you any idea how good the Remote Desktop is to use these kind of apps? This is my main concern really of making the swap - I want to be mac tranquil!

I can't answer your question about this specific application as I never tried it. However you should be aware that intel macs can be set up to dualboot into windows XP SP2 if needed. If you are able to use such applications as you mention then you can set up dualbooting in no time. Alternatively you can use a virtulization option like parallels or VM fusion to run windows apps without booting into windows. Some works great while other don't so they allow you to use a free 30 day trial to learn if it works for you. If you want to know if it works before buying hardware then you can always send a mail to ask them if it works. I hope this helps.
