A Week in Tokyo 29

Bit behind in the Week in Tokyo so this week will cover a bit more than a week.
First up we have yet another ramen place that just opened in our neighborhood. When a new shop opens, the Japanese usually put out a ton O flowers in front of the shop that they've received from well wishers - usually from companies that they work with.
And when a new shop opens, there are always queues of folk lining up to check out the goods or food.
Tis getting rather chilly in Tokyo - love the cold n crisp sunny mornings though.
Some crab katsu with Rin.
Some rice cake type dessert - forgot what its called - 100 yen.
Tenpura don for lunch with Kagamin. Many traditional Japanese lunches come with miso soup.
Some halloween objects that they are trying to get rid of - this time not tied to those bars below.
Tis the season to be jolly. Thanks to Gordon for starting the avatar-with-festive-theme boom across dc.com ^^;
Will probably stick up the lights outside the house tomorrow.
Checking out the dannychoo.com-in-your-inbox where you get all the posts from the previous day in your inbox. Looks decently formatted. Great for busy folks who cant visit every day or who hate the clutter and ads across the site - signup here.
Then its doing some otagei on stage with a few cute girlies.
In Akiba with the Silicon Valley folks.
Pokemon calendar up for grabs at Mc Dee's. Still looking for a moesome 2D girl calendar for next year.
B'fast at Mc Dees with Ken Taya.
Picked up another 100 yen cooking brush for dusting down the girls.
Got my Indy Jones waiting in the lounge for viewing - how was it compared to the previous Indy's?
Still need to get Shaolin Girl which just came out on DVD.
Been meaning to take up making coffee with beans. Had a colleague at Amazon who made amazing coffee. Anybody dabble in this pastime?
Rabbit food with Rin.
Rin n Pasta for lunch.
Off to some meeting somewhere deciding which figure to take with me. Guy Kawasaki's "Art of the Start" book on the desk was the last book I read before starting up Mirai Inc. An important message from Guy below. Start a company to make meaning - not money. If your main aim to start a company is to make money then you wont make meaning *and* wont make money.

Mirai Inc is a place for me to enjoy life and for me to live the meaning of life. Hmmmm. I think I have more to talk about this subject but will do so at a later date.
Spicy ad for a spicy snack.
This ad has been running on the trains forever. A man and woman are distressed because the company they work at uses pirated software. They call up the BSA to grass on their boss and give a really smug grin at the end.

Questions: Are you aware of any pirated software being used at your work? If so, would you grass on your company?
At the New Context Conference 2008.
The conference turnout was quite a few but seemed much less than last year?
One of my goals is to build up Mirai Inc to make our services significant enough to speak at next years conference.
At the blog dinner in Gotanda. About 90 bloggers and IT folks attended - the most ever in the 5 year history of the monthly get together. The former GM for Microsoft Japan was there too.
Being interviewed by a Mac magazine which should be out at the end of this month - really excited about the publication. Those horrid bars outside the window were there when we bought this house and never bothered to remove them.
Then its off to Singapore for a week of eating, speaking, and interviewing.
Spent the last night on the 30th floor of some building having lovely chicken rice with the folks at Animax.
Zip forward a few days in time to be at Changi airport - about to catch a plane back to JP.
Checking out dc.com before getting on the plane. Was surprised that it wasn't blocked like last time in Germany - flagged as an adult site.
Nice that the internet service was free.
Singaporeans get 7.2Mbps - we get 100Mbps for the same price in Japan ^^;

But Singapore does have something even more tasty than a 100Mbps connection - free wireless access across the island with their Wireless@SG service which I would rather have. Which would you rather have?
Decent food with ANA.
The thoughts that playback through your head while looking out the plane window eh?
About to touch down in JP.
First thing we do before we head home is to grab some stuff at Seven Eleven. We usually finish off the fresh stuff like milk and the such before we travel so the refrigerator is pretty much empty when we get back to home sweet home.
Just back from YouTube Live Tokyo as I write this - was an amazing event. Cant wait to show you the photos - it will be the next article.

The next giveaway will be open to folks who are dannychoo.com members and who are subscribing to my YouTube channel. A video will suddenly show up and cotain a question that is related to YouTube live. If you are not subscribed you may want to do so now. YouTube Live Tokyo was just awesome. The amount of new comrades I made in a single day was staggering. Went along with a new pack of 100 name cards and came back with 3 left. Met up with a load of comrades who I used to work with at Microsoft who are now at Google too - everybody seems *much* more happier ^^; Also met a load of TV folks - dc.com on Japanese TV again soon. You voted for stormtroopers and high school girls - you are going to get it! Me and the lovely Maginbon (here burogu here) back stage. And please - Magibon gets a load of hate messages already so folks who are thinking of leaving snide remarkes about her should go read this instead.
First time here?
If you are new here, you may want to keep up with more of the same via RSS or Danny's other networks. (dont show again)

I think free wifi everywhere would be much cooler. Regarding your search for a moesome 2D girl calendar for next year, I have a solution. I took a bunch of Hi res images that I liked and got a professional printing service to make a calendar for me.

It turned out really well and all the pictures are EXACTLY what I wanted ^^ I on;y paid £7.02 including postage for 2 a4 calendars. I thought it was great value.

wow - nice article. so much covered from conferences, a singapore trip, an interview to food in one article.
one q: wont the cooking brush leave scratches on the figures?
about pirated software being used in my workplace - nopes. even it were i wouldn't grass over it cause it would mean trouble to me cause people get corrupted here over a small amount of money.
also think i might have to forgo the next contest, cause i dont want to join youtube. the net connection sucks here bigtime. i'd rather have a 100mbps connection than free wifi (i dont have any wifi enabled devices ;) )

Actually, next year that Wireless@SG wont be free anymore (if im not wrong) ^^; it was free to 'market' it so ppl get used to browse freely with their laptop in starbucks, etc. But once its not free, they gotta paid to surf anywhere ^^;

It won't mind paying if it is a minimal sum a month.
They're slowly wifi-ing the whole island so should give them some credit for it.

I’m sure you will be inundated with more homemade calendars than you can manage now.

By the way, I use a mouthpiece brush or recorder cleaner to dust down my figures. They only cost pennies in UK.

Bean-made coffee is so easy to make, and I agree, is the better tasting.

Loved Guy Kawasakis’ presentation video. Perhaps now would be a good time to remind everyone of the reason for Mirai Inc being in existence?

I see you still have a British passport. Any thoughts about becoming a Japanese citizen?

mmm it has been a quite a while since a weekly tokyo post. :)
Seems like things are settling down at a certain time and then suddenly becoming busy the next day for you. Hope you're coping with that well. 100mbps, since I'm more of a home PC user. Can't stand laptops for some reason...only if its to study, but for gaming...just cant suffice.

Anyway, I'd much rather prefer the fast internet at home rather than free wireless. I hardly use wifi.

Coffee is easy btw, just get youself a small spice grinder and one of these; http://www.kitchenniche.ca/images/bodum%20french%20press%20coffee%20maker%20chambord%20big.jpg

Fast 100mpbs would be better for me, almost all of my net activity goes on at home and I would appreciate faster downloads instead of wireless.

Nice walkthrough Danny. I'd rather have 100Mbps flat rate then having free wi-fi at lower speeds. What kind of connection do you use Danny - ADSL or cable?

Nice video ^^. I'm hoping to work on a few start-ups once I graduate in a few weeks. Both of them I want to make due to I feel that they will fill a void on the internet that I feel nobody has stepped up to do. While I do hope that I will get money out of them eventually, the main reason I'm making them is that I want people to feel connected or help provide information to people in an easy and simple manner. I hope it is something that works out next year ^^i

As always a nice collection of photos. I'm happy with my ADSL speed so free wi-fi would be nice especially since mobile internet is way to expensive here.

100mbps. I don't have my laptop with me all the time, even if I do *most* of the time, and I'd rather have a much faster home connection. I'm not out long enough to really need Internet; there's always stuff waiting to be watched and games waiting to be played.

What a nice Week(s) hmm Danny. A lot of things happening in your life, so much changes on the blog, and a lot of news to bring up to us.

I had a lot of trouble without a Free Wi-fi in Tokyo, so Let's go for a Free Wi-Fi. Coz without internet for searching, its really hard to travel in a different country.

I remember Danny talking about this when he was in Germany. He asked how many of us who had problems with blocking of DC. I can't remember the answer to that question though, but a search could tell if you are really interested in this question. I don't have blocking issues and that's good enough to know for me (at least for now)

I think getting a faster net connection would be better thab a free wifi. What if the makers of the Wifi has a conspiracy, then the outcome would be bad. There are free wireless connectivity, but the connection is crappy. LOL, better to get a guaranteed 100 mbps, physically connected. World is moving so many people will know how to make a 100mbps on their own, making it free.

I like those pictures too. There is something facinating about looking at the ground from a plane. However I hate flying. I don't like the forces and movements of a plane. Also the more I learn about safety and how planes work the more I don't like flying, which is interesting because airlines actually tell people about how planes work to get them comfortable about flying... it's the opposite with me ^^

I would rather have free WIFI. The only things that I can think of that require 100Mbs are downloading games and anime/t.v. shows.

I have one of those stuffed animals from the crane game that I won. Those games are pretty addictive. As for Indiana Jones, South Park put it best: George Lucas and Steven Spielberg raped Indy.

Same. I'd rather get free WiFi. 7.2Mbps isn't a bad speed at all, unless you download games and anime then that's where the 100Mb connection comes in.

All in all I'd sacrifice that to be able to get a net connection on my laptop wherever I go.

we already have free wifi in Paris in almost all the public space ( garden, museum etc..) and admistration building. it give u a free wifi access for an hour, after that u have to restart a session but u can restart as many time as u want. take a long time to settle that because the internet providers were not really happy and also because there was a lots of legals issue. So that, plus Mc donald free wifi and a lot of restaurants and bars that also provide wifi u can connect to internet almost everywhere in Paris. but not really sure that is usefull since that Two providers annouce that they gonna start WIMAX next year, going first in Paris.

Then if you are a major/super fan, the next 10mins should erase all doubts about the movie...and his age.

Now I know who to blame. I think it's wrong to start Christmas before Christmas. A valid compromise would be to not start before the 1st of December.

Since the shops and media started acting like Christmas in November, it's like it's not really the same when it's finally Christmas :(

Regarding your question about pirated software at work, their's no pirated software being used at my work. And if they even had pirate software in use, I still wouldn't grass the company (you can see it as a benefit actually, in case your boss starts to get really annoying you can threathen to grass him/her).

About the 100 Mbps/free WiFi, I personally would rather have 100 Mbps. Since I'm only online on my desktop (I don't have a laptop yet), free WiFi has no benefits for me.

that rice cake dessert looks oishii. if you ever remember the name, please do tell. also, Shaolin Gril sucks poo, but if you insist, do go ahead and watch it. ^_^

and free wifi wherever in Singapore? not really. there aren't a lot of those free hotspots yet so personally, i'd still prefer higher access speeds at home, but that also means that i'd need tons of HDD space because there's so much to download at a faster speed.

Further more wireless@SG is not even Singapore wide yet... The connection is still bad and can only be found in certain places... Lastly it's only like a trial... which they are going charge for by 2011... ... ...

I don't trust wifi security. I ended up using cables to connect everything instead of wifi due to security for both the network and me. Considering the research results on affects of waves from mobile phones, then I guess wifi can be at least as bad. It might even be worse because the energy in the signal is higher.

Also using cables gives me gigabit ethernet. Quite useful for streaming video and fast forwarding ^^

What I'd prefer?

100Mbps. By far. Heck. I've been dreaming of a line with decent upstream bandwidth for ages. I'd actually start hosting webpages at home then. The main reason I do not own a webpage right now is that I am weary of free providers/dislike their ToS/limitations/whatever, and I am not willing to pay for a shitty webhoster. And good webhosters tend to be expensive. I'd rather have a dedicated box I built myself at home for that. I could also host voicechat servers, or whatever the hell is needed for whatever. As well as a decent FTP as internet storage for friends of mine.

After moving here I got stuck with a shitty 3Mbps down/360Kbps up ADSL line, which fails. The 16Mbps down/1.5Mbps up I had at my previous place was nicer, but alas, the 3Mbps line is as good as it gets over here.

I'd probably kill to have internet per optical carrier at home.

As for WiFi everywhere, I have a sort of irrational hate on everything that works wirelessy, so that's a no-go for me.

Warning. German wall of text. Made of lawbabble.

To make it short, since the fifth of this month or so, any pornographic material of people that APPEAR underage (even if they are not) is illegal. This includes drawn work like doujinshi.

How a drawn character can 'appear' or 'not appear' underage is kind of a riddle to me. Some sections are rather awkwardly and/or mushily worded, too.

In the end, depending on the judge, I bet you could lock up half of the people in the darn country if you just interpreted the wording the 'right' way.

Curiously enough, my current school has rather lax firewall settings. Our admins are good with computers, but not with the 'internet'. All the obvious pages (like the ones containing 'naughty words' in the URL) are of course blocked. But pages like DC, meidocafe.jp, danbooru or 4chan are NOT.

Though I admit, those are holes that I rarely exploit, given the fact that I do not want any misunderstandings.

If I recall correctly, he said he pays 5000 yen a month.

Which is orders of magnitude less than what I'd have to pay here. (Considering it'd mean the ISP would have to run a underground fiber line just for me for at the least 400 meters or so. And that's being optimistic.)

Anyway I have to disagree on the supposedly "nationwide" coverage of the wireless@sg. It is usually available in places like libraries, starbucks and such, but not really everywhere.

Add that with a number of people using the same router as you and massive lag ensues. I want the 100 mbps please, takeaway. :D

Ooh... that poll is a tough one. I'd have to think about that.

And if I do say so myself, I'm quite a master at making a nice pot o' coffee.

It's become more than dabbling... it's an addiction. ^^

Wireless would be cool. Combined with a Blackberry, you could waste time on the internet anywhere. I've never had more than 768k, so even 7.2M would be a godsend.

Man.. My internet is 769Kbps >_>
My internet provider goes up to 21Mbps, but thats $50 a month and the one I have is $150..
And it works for what Im using it for right now.
Once I move Ill shell out for the 21Mbps stuff.~

I meant $15.
$150 for 768Kbps would be a little pricey! @.@

When I saw that 7.2 mbps ad, I was stunned, but when you mentioned that Japan has 100mbps, I was like WTF!!! The only maximum speed we can have here is 2mbps.
