My speaking appointment at Promax BDA Asia was this afternoon and thought we'd take a look at what went on at the conference. Before I start, thought I'd give you a rerun of what its all about:-
Promax|BDA is the world's largest television marketing conference attracting industry leaders and executives from top television networks, cable channels, local stations, station groups, distribution, syndication, media and creative agency, design and emerging media.
Through sessions, panels, exhibits and screenings, Promax|BDA brings together the world's leading creative and strategic marketing professionals for three days of dialogue, debate and discussion about the international business of television marketing, promotion and design.
Last year we welcomed over 3,500 attendees from around the globe, including more than 700 local station executives from over 150 television markets in the United States. Our delegation is made up of television marketing professionals who are tasked with driving the value of entertainment by finding new and innovative ways of attracting audiences to their parent companies' networks, stations and brands. The aim of the organization is to lead the international conversation about the role of marketing, promotion and design in the monetization of media.
More than ever, marketers play the pivotal role in the business of television. And Promax|BDA 2008 is about putting them in the driver's seat.

The venue was The Old Parliament where a bunch of people used to shout at each other regarding how the country should be run.
A bunch of us turn up at the venue the night before for the speaker tech run.

The grandness of the Chamber made me feel nervous+1.

As I see bits of the other speakers presentations, I realize that I need to add a few more slides.

After my tech run, I'm back at the hotel tweaking slides before a final rehearsal. While most folks tidy up before taking a photo, I purposely messed up the room (yeah right ^^;)

Its 8:30AM this morning. A shuttle comes to pick up the speakers.

As with most conferences, they have goodie bags to give out.
Networking breakfast time. The room packs out 10 mins after.
The food was quite yummy.
I'm on at 1PM. The other chap is on at the same time in a different room.
Graham is the guy who does the intros.
The Chamber filled up.
First up is Gregory Ho (Animax GM) and Kennith Liu (Nokia).

Everybody breaks for lunch and I go to set up my Mac and Kagamin to keep me company on stage.
Word of advice - hide any work related ecchi stuff that you may have on the desktop as it may unexpectedly appear on the screen ^^;
How/where do you hide your ecchi material anyway? I remember I used to hide stuff in my System 32 folder in Windows ^^

Mirai Gaia summary.
Blogging business. The main audience of the conference were media creatives - most making promo videos who were very interested in Consumer Generated Content which is my line of business.
Alexis talks about Animal Planet rebranding.
Another thing I learned - no matter who the speaker was, there were a couple of people who looked like they were sleeping in the audience - including mine ^^;
So, if you see people sleeping in your talk, don't be distracted because its only natural to have people dozing off - even with the best of speakers.

Animal Planet rebranding continues. Alexis showed us how animal documentaries were branded in such a way that people just wanted to watch them.
Linda Button (ECD Tooth+Nail) is an entertainment language specialist who showed us how powerful words can be and how people interpret words differently.
One of my learnings from Linda was how she asked the audience to approach her with their name card at the end of her talk.
Its afternoon tea and networking time. Looks like I will be speaking at more locations around the world with different organizations. I Maybe in your neighborhood soon ^^
Jens Hertzum (Creative Director of BDA Sydney) talks directly to promo creators and gives us his learnings which will help one work better. Main takeaway is:-
"A person who asks is a fool for 5 mins, a person who does not ask is a fool for life."
He then adds:-
"A person who asks every 5 mins is a fool" ^^;

Du Da Sheng (VP Multiplatforms Solutions Unit, StarHub) ends the day by looking at previous winners of the Promax BDA Awards.
Unlike Japan, its still bright in Singapore at 6PM. I'm off to the hotel.

I didnt spot the Merlin thing from your warner goodie bag first time round!!! I wanted to watch Merlin when it started in the UK... but I completely forgot it was on.... and haven't caught up.... I will get round to watching it sometime I'm sure. I've also remembered what Promax reminds me of.... the fake drug Plomox from Scrubs lol. (The drug Julie is peddling in series 2 I think...) Our parliament is very very quiet... That's awesome stuff Danny. I've been very impressed by the opportunities you get to speak about otaku culture. I want to get into the video game industry as an artist. I've had a guest speaker from EA Mythic (*now just* Mythic) talk to a group I was in and he pretty much unfolded my destiny in front of me to see what I need to do.

I want to work somewhere in the media area. Hence I took a course named 'Software Systems for the Arts and Media' (Yes, mouthful). When I'm looking for a job now, I get things like, web design (only). Well, thats from Jobsite though. UK is getting into a jobless crisis at the moment. Danny, if you were to hire, what sort of position would it be? (other requirements is obvious like know multi-language and own at least 3 candy girls or 30 Dakimuras). Just curious.

Well, I know the nervousness before the talk. I myself have given numerous motivational talks to various companies. No matter how well you are prepared, you can never shake that feeling away. The remote control is very useful. I personally use one that is made by 3M. Great tool indeed. I look forward to hearing your talk. :)

I forgot Danny, go try Ya Kun Kaya Toast Set. It's a traditional breakfast set thingy we have here in Singapore. Can be eaten for light snack too. - Half-boiled egg - Kaya toast (Kaya is a coconut jam thingy) - Choice of drink (Coffee, Tea.. normally I get Teh-O which means Tea w/o milk) You might have had it in Malaysia before. But please do try it, it's awesome I promise ^^

If he does I'll skip class. xD Though with my luck, he'd end up coming next summer when I'm not here. Studying film, so yeah, I want to get into entertainment. Danny, I've always wondered - when you're so busy, is it ever difficult to keep up with the stuff you're talking about? A few talks I've been to, I get the impression that the speaker, having been so successful on the circuit for so long, overextended himself and is so busy with speaking that he's a bit disconnected from the current material.

Danny, looks like you put "Keith Reiss" but it is supposed to be "Mike Reiss" - unless they are two different people, in which case, my bad. I've always enjoyed conferences. There's a website called TED.com that has a large collection of talks. I find myself watching them and being enthralled - often more-so than when watching anime ^_^ Wish I could've been there to see everything.

Come to Sydney~ x3 I Had to smile at the slide pictures since you look like you're really enjoying yourself :3 Hope you get permission for the video, would love to see it. I enjoyed the trend day one and I'm sure this one's just as good, if not better~ =D I've also fallen asleep at seminars, I felt really bad doing so, but I simply couldn't keep my eyes open for the whole presentation ^^;; The last one I went to ran from 8:30am-9pm in the city for 3 days... it takes me over an hour to travel, never mind the extra time you need to get ready, especially for females xD;;

Game Development courses are not what game developers are looking these days, those courses are a waste of time and money. They're looking for programers and 3D modellers these days (I hear). I guess you can think of media courses if you're interested.

Wow, what a grand event, things just get interesting in Danny's life, I'm so jealous ^^; I used to hide ecchi stuffs on folders somewhere deep but now all the family members have their own PCs so I don't hide it anymore since we don't use others' PC much. I even clearly label my ecchi folder 'Hentai' -_- It doesn't get any obvious than that.

Sure, I wouldn't mind working in media or Entertainment. Part of what I like about Web Development type work is it leaves one open to many possibilities. I like having work that allows me to step into other industries and fields of work. Most like it is because I have interest in many different things and the feeling of diversity in my career. Don't you feel your work with Good Smile is Entertainment related Danny? Certainly user generated Web Development is Media, as I see it... ^^ Right now I don't feel I'm getting everything I need with my CIS minor. I will continue to find ways to add to my skills as I always have in the past... I'm just excited to get to that part. Danny I forgot to mention this before but have you ever looked at Remote Buddy? http://tinyurl.com/5a8o6m I know you have used IOSPIRIT apps in the past. I like how I can program behavior of specific app. function for the Apple Remote and other remotes as well as, control for any app. I want. Also there is a nice AJAX interface for iPod Touch/iPhone.

Damn, wish I could attend such events... Again I'm jealous of you Danny.. hahaha... By the way, 1 question, for someone who have the interest but lack the knowledge and experience - let alone contacts with those big agencies... can they attend such event ? As observers maybe... of coz after paying the entrance fee etc. Is that possible Danny ? And would you be kind enough to share with us how to find out about such events.. specially those that you will be involved with - giving talks/presentation etc.
