DSi Review

Nintendo's new offering the DSi went on sale today and my sample arrived this morning - SAGM (Suddenly Acquired Game Machine) ^^;
I lurve this job ^^;

Unlike the previous PS3 launch and Wii launch which I attended in armor to cheer up the lads sitting in the cold, the DSi launch was uneventful - Brian covers the launch in Osaka.

Most places that were selling it asked people not to line up - and even if they did, all they would get is a raffle ticket in the morning. This shop said they were giving out the raffle tickets between 10am and 12 noon. They ask that raffle ticket holders go back at 2pm to see if they won a chance to purchase the DSi.

I think this is pretty fair and that making folks wait out in the cold like the PS3, Wii and iPhone was quite evil.
Anyway here is the spanking new DSi out of the box. The video clip below shows you what the DSi can do.
Cant remember what the previous box looked like as I usually throw all boxes away unless I know I'm going to sell it. Looks like I'll be keeping my old NDS for a while because the R4 is *not* compatible with the DSi - I've been enjoying playing homebrew games which my friends made and am most sad orz. But I'm guessing that it will only be a matter of time before a patch is out for the R4 or they release a similar device.

I read that the way the DSi boots up is different so a simple patch probably wont work though...
Inside the box - manuals, extra stylus and power adapter.
Lovely. They made the new power adapter bigger.
Very much dislike huge adapters. Dont know the reason but guessing its to cut down costs.
Stylus is just a bit longer than the NDS one - looks like they are going to be able to make more money by getting you to buy new spares. I've never had the need to replace one though.
DSi and NDS comparison. the DSi is just a bit longer.
The DSi takes a different battery shape.
The DSi is only just a tad slimmer. The surface is matte which looks cool but easy to leave fingernail marks on - can be wiped off easily though.
The new DSi has an SD card slot which I thought was going to be cool...
The DSi comes with two built in cameras - one on the cover and one inside.
DSi in action.
The camera feature in action.
You can take pics and have them saved to the SD card or the actual unit. The DSi will save about 410 pics at VGA resolution on the unit.
The camera feature has full of stuff to play with - each icon at the top of the screen represents something that you can do to the photos.
For example exciting stuff like have your face surrounded by hearts. Brilliant.
The photos taken on the camera are managed with a slider thingy and keeps track of when you took the photos too.
The DSi has some functionality to play with music tracks - but they have to be in ACC format. There was me thinking that it would be a cool MP3 player.
When you turn on, the bottom screen shows a series of icons and empty boxes. The empty boxes will be filled with applications that you download. the DSi has great potential (especially with its wireless capabilities and SD card slot) to become a cool PDA but why the restrictions? Will talk about the photo restrictions later on.
The settings screen which include parental controls.
The screen for copying data to and from the DSi.
If you turn on with a game inserted, you will see it in the game slot as shown here. Turn on with the R4 inserted and it will say "you have just bricked your DSi and you wont be able to use it ever again you fool."

Well it was either that or "Nothing inserted in the DS slot."
Yes I do have a handful of original games - this was the last Castlevania game with Johnathan and Charlotte. Been loving the Castlevania series since the SNES version - CM below.
Game play for the SNES Castlevania below.
Now going back to what I was talking about regarding restrictions - you cant save images on the SD card and transfer to view them on the DSi and I really don't see why not. The only way you are going to view ecchi stuff on the DSi is to take a picture of it from your display...

What you can do however is to save pics that you took on the DSi and transfer them to your computer.
Side by side comparison. The DSi screen is slightly larger.
The new volume button looks like this.
Gone is the old GBA slot.
Glad they removed the power off button from the side - I used to turn off the machine mistaking that for the volume so many times ^^;
They also changed the adapter shape meaning that I need a new USB charger thingy.
Power, Wifi and Charging lamps on the left. I chose black this time round because the buttons on the white ones turn yellow after a while ^^;
And the usual amusement from Nintendo regarding what you should not do including "don't throw away", "don't put in mouth", "don't pour liquid in it", "don't microwave it" and "don't step on it."
Brian has more closeups of the manual.
"Dont drive and play at the same time", "Dont play on a crowded train."
"Dont attach un-certified objects to it" - I think they mean "Dont use R4."
Changing the battery.
Going over the new UI. Cant wait for a beefed up version of Moonshell - or anything more decent to give me control of my data.
The different things you can do with the camera features including merge your face with another face.
Seems like there is loadsa money to be made in digital downloads and Nintendo obviously want a piece of that. You can buy points which you can then use to download apps directly to the DSi. I have not tired it yet as it asked me to update the firmware as soon as I turned it on.

I'm guessing that they will be releasing firmware updates to nullify any new updates to R4 type devices.
Looks like you will be able to download some over 18 type games too (eroge?).
Interesting illustrations they are using...
And here are the photos taken with the DSi.
Fauna-chan.
You can stretch the camera view and it will display like this in real time.
And you can do very strange stuff like this. I have no idea what I was doing but it looks very unpleasant.
Shot of the desk.
The camera features will entertain Japanese children for hours. Will be interesting to see what games they bring out that will interact with the two built in cameras.

I lurve playing homebrew so dont think I will be using the DSi much until I have a patch or device that enables me to do so. DSi has much potential but just need to wait for the groovy third party apps to come out.

Wow! One of the first posters. How nice, guess you just posted the article.

I was wondering if I should import the DSi. Danny, is it possible to set the language to English just like the original DS? Otherwise, I'll just wait for the English version.

The DSi seems awesome, though I am not sure if I will get it immediately or not. You are really lucky to have free samples all the time while we spend most of our income on stuff like this. :) I'll definitely look for a job like that in the future.

I also noticed that you can't use an R4 with this. Yup, I suppose that I'll have to also wait for a software update for that.

Me still has the old brick that is the first gen. DS, so will upgrade as soon as this hits US&A.

The pictures taken from the DSi look even better than half the photos I take with my camera. Seems I have one more thing to upgrade too.

Then if you get the DSi, you'll have 2 upgrades in 1! The pictures it takes looks decent enough, but it's not really mentioned how many megapixels it is, eh?

What the hell? Recent phones have about 5 megapixel cameras. Regular film cameras can be in the region of 20 megapixels but are usually 10. But the DSi camera is only 0.3 megapixels. It really is a very low-grade camera. My phone from several years ago, which was the cheapest in the shop (£40), has a 0.3 megapixel camera.

I am sadly a gamer without a DS, regarding the DSi.. I'm not really sure. Thing is, I haven't picked up any handheld titles for so long. (I did pickup New Super Mario Brothers for a friend though). When I do find employment, I will definitely save up, maybe for either one. (thing is, I also own an original GBA, not an SP strange I know.) Going to see how things turn out.

Awesome review here danny! Gotta love that sleek design that Nintendo made for this console.
The interface is refreshing although it would seemt that they really
wish to compete with the PSP GUI. Music playing capability is indeed
a huge enhancement. Looking at the pictures that you took using DSi, seems the pictures are not that bad as some of the reviews are saying regarding the camera functions of DSi

As a Nintendo DS fan, this is a must for me.

Don't have a DS yet (bought one of the original PSPs when they were still pricy as hell and have regretted it ever since), and am thinking about getting a DSi. Not entirely sure, though. Supposed to be coming to North America by summer 2009 so we'll see.

Hrrmmm.... It's not as good as I expected. Camera sure, but we have so many cameras in the household, so don't really need one. And it's not an MP3 player either. Good thing I got a new MP3 player instead. I'll stick with my 1st gen DS until they deem it obsolete.

Not too impressed unfortunately. Try again Nintendo :)

Agree with the camera bit (although it's must be tons of fun to manipulate them directly on the DS). As always this seems to be aimed at more casual and younger gamers. PSP is good enough to brew all kinds of hacks and is better as a portable multimedia, but DS wins for the games.

Definite win for DS for the games. Really helps having the R4 as well ^^
It's more fun playing with the touch screen than the analog stick that you use at home with the home console.

I'm considering getting an English language one when it comes out, but I'm not selling my old DS "Nancy" as I called her, because the GBA slot is useful to me for playing GBA games with a backlight. Still, if I bought her a DSi boyfriend I would probably call him Norris, and use him as a replacement digital camera. Seriously, if the camera is as cool as you say it is, why the hell not get one to replace my broken digital camera?

I won't import one because I like playing PAL region games in English. As for homebrew I've never tried it on my DS. For now Nancy is my homegirl for playing DS games on, and I don't think I need to get rid of her completely.

All the new features seem kinda gimmicky. Crappy photo quality. I don't really have much use for the photo editing and music editing features... just use a computer for that.

Also, I don't understand japanese, but from the youtube video shown it looks like you have to buy minutes for internet usage on the DSi ? if so, then that is weaksauce... I'll stick with my ds lite w/ R4.

Just read Brian's (Kotaku) coverage and review.... my opinnion hasn't changed so far.
I do have a DS Lite, and I didn't see enough reasons to buy a DSi.

The camera is a funny gimmick (I loled at Danny's pics), but I see the effects and stuff as something that gets boring fast... a friend of mine has a Sony webcam with touchscreen that does some of that, and after a month of usage he never used the resource anymore.

Lately, I've been using my PSP way more than my DS too... so I guess I'll only replace both on the next generation...

I'll admit I've never been much of a portable gamer - prefer doing my gaming at home. Even without taking that into account, though, the DSi seems like nothing to get excited about. It's got a camera (that's not very high quality) and an mp3 player (that isn't very versatile). Everyone, especially the Japanese with their swiss-army-phones, already have things that can do that.

Online capability is good - but don't exactly like them dropping backward capability for catridges, especially if they're not going to allow homebrews. Homebrews would have allowed players to import ROMs and play the games that they just dropped support for. Seems to me Nintendo just released a machine with gimmicky new features and a greatly reduced games library.

Hmm..so the DSi firmware updates download on the console itself?
Was thinking if the file is on the Nintendo site then it can be used to make custom firmware like the PSP's.

So no USB cable(to connect to PC) included?

Interesting how some sponsor sent a DSi to you. Me wonder how that happened.

Anyhow, I haven't gotten a gameboy since they came out with the DS, so I doubt DSi will change my mind.

it can't have been that much more expensive to keep the GBA compatibility.
they are probably just trying to force us to use their download pay services.
I was thinking about getting one of these but I'm not sure now. maybe a new model will come out next spring. Nintendo is almost as bad as apple sometimes with the model revolutions.

There doesn't seem to be much of an upgrade from the DS Lite, so I doubt I'll be getting one. The addition of two cameras does seem pretty cool, except after you get over the novelty of it, I doubt anyone will be using it for long.

The only thing they can really do with this is bring out some games similar to PS2's EyeToy, which wasn't as popular as Sony had hoped it would become.

I really wish Nintendo would just release a new handheld instead of milking the DS for all its worth. I mean... the new features seem pretty useless and any new releases would have to forgo the duo touch screen feature unless they want to alienate the old fanbase.

Wanted to get DS for a while now... But ain't picking up the DSi yet until:
- Flashcarts are compatible/working
- Do DSi will be region locked as I want to play some JP and US games as well.

Prolly wait till the next year, for the kinks/problems or another rev to come up.

Not getting this since I'm happy with my PSP. Btw, Play Asia is selling it for USD299 which is more expensive than the PSP. Something to do with taxes I guess.

The matte finish sounds great as the DS Lites are such fingerprint monsters. I'm also liking the cameras as they will be used in future games, but I don't see myself using DSi as a camera really. Killing the R4 is great too as stealing/pirating games is not good. Not liking the fact that the new DSi software will be region locked though as we Europeans usually get f*cked when it comes to region based services. Still as we already have DS and DS lite in the house, I'm probably buying a PSP next. Then again there still aren't that many PSP games I'd like to play, so maybe I'll just save that money for a new laptop or something. ^^

I would love to get a DSi, but the only thing that disallows me from getting one (besides the fact that I'm a student, have no job and hardly any money) is that I'll have to keep on buying the games, unlike the PSP. SGD$50~60 each here.. way much more than I can afford.

I have the very old NDS, you know the ones that came out first before they released the DSlite about 6 months later...grrr. I don't play it much and lack a R4 card to download games so I don't think it I will be buying this. Maybe if a really good game comes out but NDS seems to be targeting either games from films, or just a variety of brain training, fitness and cooking stuff :S.

But since my Phone does the extra functions that DSi have, I just stick to my Smartphone + DS combination. If you have basic phone, DSi could make ur day out in the field more exciting ;-D

I was going to get a DSLite + R4 card when Nintendo decided to come out with DSi. From what I've gathered on the net, it personally seems to be a BIG disappointment to me because:

1. No GBA slot; say BYE-BYE to your old GBA games
2. Camera picture quality seems off to me; but then it doesn't seem justifiable to me to pay more just for a pair of crappy cameras esp. in the current economic climate
3. R4 incompatability; there goes my stash of NDS roms
4. The screen sizes seem negliable to me
5. I kinda get the feeling that Nintendo haven't really done their best in coming out with this (correct me if I'm wrong pple)
6. Crap economic situation the world's in, I'll be damn lucky if I still even have a job come next year
7. Lack of time due to my job

Anyway thanks for the review Danny:-)

It's still too early to tell. Let them flashcart makers have their time. I'm sure in a month or two the DSi will be homebrew capable.

Hmmm, i can't say much about this because i don't plan to own anymore portable electronics anymore. There's a slight chance i'll replace my MP3 player that is now long gone with a new one (Microsoft Zune or a Sony name brand MP3 player) but i live in a place where upgrading is pretty wasteful in terms of money. I did decide not to get a PSP anymore, since i already have a converted PS2. But anything that has to do with computers i'd be interested in. I really need an external HD at the moment.

Haven't got DS and I wanted one, and I first heard the DSi had a 3MP camera, turns out to be a 0.3MP camera... so I will be getting just a DS Lite. And since the newer DSi is coming out, the older DS lite will probably drop a bit in price ;p

I was kind of glad they were releasing the DSi at the same time a little irritated. Nearly all the improvements should have been on the original DS. The shape and the finish aren't exactly the best... but I can ignore that. The SD slot, the volume button, including extra funtions and mp3 player... these are all things that would have made the DS perfect. I hope someone comes up with some software hack to run homebrews or something. I believe there was a web browser for the DSi or am I mistaken? Anyways, congratulations on getting the DSi!

It wouldn't surprise me if everything becomes pre-order in time. Retail has learned the lesson I think. It just extra cost and people don't really do any shopping.

Seems kind of pointless to me, and just an attempt to re-sell the DS to people all over again for no real reason. I have a DS Lite, and I enjoy the Phoenix Wright games, as well as the Final Fantasy remakes (and tactics), but I'm getting bored of the system's antiquated power. When a dedicated handheld is less than 1/10th of the power of a mobile phone (such as the iPhone), then something is amiss.

I was more interested in the PSP 3000, but then I heard about all the trouble people were having with it's screen...

Maybe iPhone gaming will be good one day and I can forget the dedicated handhelds, but so far iPhone games have been worse than useless. Too bad as the iPhone has a pretty good GPU and CPU combination.

If I had the money I'd update Vista-chan immediatly for something with more ram, better graphics card and more hd space......
One of the things I am pissed about is the loss of th GBA slot. I mean I was pissed enough that the original DS didnt play GBC games.. but now they've dropped it altogether??? Lame much?

And LOL, that pirate-card thing don't work. In some ways I'm glad. But I'm only bitter because I never had one myself....lol

Or you could just use the million other options at your disposal to play GBA games...like, you know, a DS Lite, GBA, GBA SP, GCN GB Player, GBA Micro, etc. etc.

It always annoys me when people act like they can't play their old games anymore, just because a new device won't play them. You can't expect things to be backwards compatible indefinitely. It just isn't practical, especially when the market for those games has been long dead.

But what if, say, you need the drive for connectivity with GBA games? Like migration of pokemon and stuff?

<i>"Most places that were selling it asked people not to line up - and even if they did, all they would get is a raffle ticket in the morning. This shop said they were giving out the raffle tickets between 10am and 12 noon. They ask that raffle ticket holders go back at 2pm to see if they won a chance to purchase the DSi.

I think this is pretty fair and that making folks wait out in the cold like the PS3, Wii and iPhone was quite evil."</i>

Would never work in The States. Someone would hire a bunch of homeless to stand around and get most of the winning raffle tickets and then just turn around and sell them for a considerable markup. "Ticket resellers" (read: "legal" scalpers) have been using similar tactics for years.

The photos taken from the DSi turned out better than I expected for a VGA camera. The built-in stuff that you can do with the pictures doesn't really interest me. Its the new games that will integrate the new functionality that really got me guessing. If the games are good enough I just might get myself one in the future.

Wonder who will come out with a new game first. hmmm

Awesome review Danny! I want a DSi, but I am not in a hurry, so I'll probably pick one up when I got to Japan in April next year. Also, what R4 cartridge do you have? Because I just ordered one, its "version 3", and according to the box, it's supposed to work with a DSi as well. Just thought I'd give you a heads up, in case you have an older version ^__^

If I didn't have DS I would consider buying it, but I must admit that DSi really looks better than DS and the change of position of the power button is a good thing too.

Then again... I'll probably wait it out as I did for the DS Lite which isn't anywhere close into getting me to get it any soon. Currently, I'm pretty content with my PSP (pink.. and a gift hehe) so I'll have to see where this goes.

Said this many times and I'll say it again. I'm not getting a DSi. I already have a Lite. That already lowers my chances of getting one. Of course, you can't play your GBA games. That's the killer blow right there. The screen's bigger, but I have to give up the GBA slot? Forget that. I still play "Sword Craft Monogatari" and several GBA games. Oh and I do get a camera, but I don't need a DS to bring out photos. So, there's no way I'm getting it.

I don't ever shop around with my mom anymore or wait for my check-up. I drive to school and work and during those times, I would have my laptop. There are also no games that interest me for the DS currently. I did think about getting one to learn Japanese though...

Thank you very much for this review of nintendo's new product! I'm so amused by some of the features the Japanese feel the need to include in electronics, compared to what American designers would build into comprable products. We definitely would not have a feature to add hearts all around your face! Haha. I like that this DSi has 2 cameras. The DSlite didn't have any, did it? I never had one. As far as I know (totally not 'in the loop') DSi is not/will not for a while be in the US yet.

cool! finally a full mobile nintendo os that has a camera, plays music and has wi-fi! if only they came up with that sooner, im not spending my money on that thing. i have an old school ds and felt ripped off when the lite came out. i can't help but think that the camera will be among the first things that will get scratched. i really don't like cameras that are outside devices, they scratch too easily.

great... now nintendo is doing the same thing as the wii points, and the xbox point cards... what they really want is your money, and that will be their downfall.

btw: what kind of a geek would put a DS in a microwave!?

I love the DSi (though I don't yet have one), but I'm seriously debating whether to save and buy this or wait and get PSP GO first. Quite the question in my mind, anyone have a thought on the matter?

I don't really agree. Cause the new PSP GO has many features being removed.
Like for example there is no UMD drive for all your old PSP games, a small screen, weird button, etc. These are just personal opinions so don't take them too seriously cause different people have different likings. ^.^

Hope this helped ^.^"
