Starting off this weeks installment in the morning at Shinagawa station. Didn't know that there were so many hotels around here. Good location though. Easy to get to Akiba and not too bad for getting to Shinjuku/Shibuya.
For folks who have been to Tokyo, which area did you stay? I hear many folks stay in Ikebukuro because the accommodation is cheap. I hear horror stories about the service/quality though. Any places which your fellow comrade to stay at or avoid?

Somewhere in Shinagawa. Building full of IT folks. Many floors occupied by Sony.
One of the companies is Netprice.com ( English profile here ) where we are having a meeting.
Netprice specialize in areas like global logistics, e-commerce and have many web properties. Today we further talks we have been having to work on something together.
A small part of their business is producing idol DVD's. Which reminds me - about time I attend an Idol event - any particular requests of which idol? I'm thinking Hitomi Kitamura.
The folks at Netprice are really young compared to the average age at many other IT companies in Japan. They seem to be early or mid twenties while I know one IT company where the youngest folks were 45-ish ^^;

At what age do you plan to look for a full time job? I was 25-ish when I got my first full time job at Japan Airlines. I considered that late as I previously spent time working for my dad and also spent a certain amount of time not knowing what I wanted to do in life - will talk this in a future article.

Depends on what degree in college your taking Danny. In my case I'm taking one that is one really nightmare, filled with mathematics, electronics, programming (which I hate), I'll probably get my first full time job at 25 while taking my masters degree which is included in the course I'm taking

Hi Danny: If you are in singapore the spicy crab is in season now and you always have the real spicy curry stuff....most of the food here give me the runs since i am more of KFC guy. to be safe there is always the chicken rice. Actually Malaysia has much better food then singapore.

Ohhh Gorgeeeeee ^^v My first fulltime job i had with 20 - System Administration (Cisco VPN, SQL Database, mostly windows PCs, Windows Terminal Servers) at a company which had offices all over germany. Was handy cause i got a company car that way too. Though the boss made some misstakes, did expand to fast and couln't cover the costs then - failed. :/ Was a nice expierience for my very first fulltime job though. I still have pictures of the very first big server rack i did setup there alone too, was so proud of it lol.

Well I was working at may parents shop full time in the summer like 5 years back, but I guess I'm not gonna work full-time until I get my bachelor degree. Only been to Japan once and I never stayed at Ikebukuro for hotels. I stayed in Shinjuku at Keio Plaza Hotel and it was all right I guess since I didn't encounter any problems. The price though is expensive for a poor person like me. I think it was like $150-250 US per night.

Can't remember where I stayed when I was in Tokyo... the hotel was right next door to the Toyota showroom in Tokyo (and yes, I know it's not called "Toyota" in Japan but I can't remember). Man, those idol DVDs look almost AV for a second there. BTW, how does your missus feel about you going to the idol events?! I know my gf will probably throw me out of the house if I did that. I got my first full-time job at the age of 22, 4th year of my first uni bachelor degree where it was a "sandwich year" and I had to get at least 9 months work experience in the industry. Ended up working for that company (and industry) for the next 6 years onwards. Yes, I also save the best for last when I'm eating. All the food & figures look yummy as usual, Danny ^___^ McFlurry Oreo is great! I got into NG Evanglion because they played all the eps on local free tv. Mmm, me want Shana. :)

AH~! a refreshing view of japan yet again. I'm really amazed as how much you could take a picture on certain establishments and its contents. Apparently here in Clovisland (Philippines) taking pictures of the establishment is strictly prohibited. even if you try to get the permission, majority of the time you'll end up turned down. So many people chillin at Starbucks as usual too. This post made my stomach grumble. Time to hit the dinning table for dinner. CIAO~!

Remember that Lelouch hated Clovisland which happens to be a park created by Clovis himself back ng Code Geass. Well same goes for me. I know its really a bad thing to hate your own country by as far as i can see i never liked how things are going here. Technology,beliefs,politics and status. Not to mention the behavior of majority of the filipinos. I find it hard to see a huge improvement in the future here. Pardon for the statement said here but this is just my 50cent.

Still in school, not yet time to find a full time job. My first "real" job was actually part time at McDonald's during high school. Those McFlurries are good but they're hard to make - I've accidentally drilled through the cup bottoms using the McFlurry machine before, lol.

Started my full time job at the age of 19. It´s studying at a university and during semester break i have professional training at a company, which pays my wage and the charges for the university - and i got my 30 days of paid holiday. Oreo Mc Flurry = do want. And about Evangelion: i read the first 9 manga volumes and yeah, looks good but will take forever to finish(/release) i guess, so i wait to get the dvd´s cheap.

I just wish that the company I'll be working in someday has cute staff as well! Stayed in Ueno mostly, although I did spend a ton of time at Ikebukuro for its cheapness before Akihabara really came out as an otaku hub years ago. My answer was 25 , bit late for me I think.

In April nect year i'm going to stay in Warabi City where I've to commute for a semester to Sophia University. Couldn't find any cheaper rooms beforehand, as Sakura and such only takes reservations one month prior the move in. Wondering where I should or can do an internship in Tokyo after the semester, since I want to stay in or near Tokyo and use that as an starting point when traveling. Most of the seniors that are there have no interesting internship and is in Kansai region. They said they missed going out in the city when they were in Sophia.

I've never worked a full-time job, but I help my mother in her work occasionally and get paid =). However, at the end of my high school senior year I did a 3-weeks internship in Ericsson LA (it was more a part-time job than a internship, thou XD). Anyways, I'll look for a full time job once I graduate, and that will (hopefully) be in 5 years. I'll be 25 at that time. And maybe I'll be working in Japan at the time I'm 27... It's good to have "contacts" worldwide *grins* PS: BTW, Ericsson LA it's not "Los Angeles" but "Latin America" *lol*

As this company has a branch in Tokyo, I'm actually finding out if I will ever get a chance to get transferred over there, but I'm patient. Speaking of staying in Japan, I shall be staying in Shinjuku next week for a trip to Tokyo. Right now I'm still planning where to sightsee in the space of 4 days 4 nights. Asakusa - great temples and lots of souvenirs Kamakura - Best shrines and temples outside of Kyoto. See Hase temple and the Great Buddha Akihabara - no explaination needed. The holy land. ^_^ Nakano - Mandarake headquarters. And next to Shinjuku. Nakano broadway is good for rare anime finds. Try to go on a weekend as more stores are open. Shibuya - Go out Hachiko exit. Its nice to go here at least once. Kyoto - If you are dont mind a 2 hour early morning train ride on a the Nozomi Shinkansen from Shinagawa. Kyoto has ALOT to see but requires alot of research. Himeji Castle - If you don't mind a 3 hour one way train ride on a Nozomi Shinkansen from Shinagawa. This castle is the coolest thing I've seen in Japan.

I stayed in Nishi Shinjuku during my last Tokyo trip. It's very convenient to go to Shinjuku,Harajuku,Shibuya for some latest fashion shopping. Anyway it's very convenient to go anywhere on the Yamanote Line;)

I'm already 23 but I still don't know what to do -_-U (currently finishing basic college) although it doesn't mean I have no plans. I hope before I reach 25 I at least get an internship. If it's about jobs, I've only gotten part-time ones, but the first two were all week one right after the other (9am-3pm, 3pm-9pm) so I guess that's the closest I've gotten to an actual full-time job.

But it's pretty good! If you were in Singapore looking for great food, come to my grandma's house... She makes the best dishese ever! LOL j/k... If you want to have a taste of singapore just go to any Kopitiam and order away! Another fun and delicious post, it made my mouth water as usual... During my trip I did stay at 15th floor of Imperial Hotel in Hibiya. Expensive place (@__@) but extra good service. Yeah, I too was confused with prepaid food ticket machines, mostly because there was soo much choices. I have only seen the Evangelion 1.0 movie (legally at Rakkautta & Anarkiaa Film Festival), but it was pretty average.

I usually stay at Akasaka whenever in Japan. the last time was at Grand prince Akasaka the other time was at New Otani. Started working at the age of 24 at a German company named Software AG. me Save the best for last too. ^^ Mcflurry is available here too, although it looks like the one you are holding is bigger than what we normally get here. btw walked into a ticket machine curry shop in Akihabara once, couldn't read most of the words so played guessing game on the machine. thankfully got what I wanted. me lucky I guess. ^^

Hmm, I got my 1st Full Time job when I was 20 as a Graphic Designer. Only managed to last 6 month though, realized that its not really my cup of tea (cuz more into Illustrations than Designing). When me & my hubby went to TGS 2008 few weeks back, we went to tokyo for the 1st time & stay at a hotel near Hamacho station. Purposedly find an Inn that's nearest to Akiba & cheap, its only 2 train stops, very near ^__^ Our biggest destination to go is Akiba after all. Hmm, regarding about Food places with ticket machine, we were confused at first too when we were eating at Udon-ya nearby Yodobashi Camera. But the Ojii-san of the Udon-ya was very kind, he helped us to choose & show how to use the Ticket Machine ^_^ tottemo yasashi desu. OMG, they have singapore restaurant there?! lol. Singapore not much good food i think.. (cuz I've been only fancy of Japanese Food since they're oishii plus healthy. There's no cheap & authentic Jap. food in singapore, even if they have it cost more expensive than the ones in Japan. I hate Singapore Yoshinoya =_= its crap for an expensive meal.

Full Time Job as in being an employee? or can be an employer which have Full-Time engagement/work? Uhh... I would had been in a full time employment currently, but I'd changed the scenario for being an employee & became an employer instead (self-employed). For my case, I'd been running my own businesses ever since 16years old (officially), did a few odd jobs before that & till now had never been into any so-called Full Time JOB. I hate to become an employee ever since I read about the downside of being an employee from business books when I'm young. I would advise readers here to go for any employment that you are interested to get the necessary working experience for your future sake. Best time/age is right after your graduation from any university degree (of cause you may spend a year to travel around the world or take a break, just make sure the time spent is productive to be stated inside your CV/resume) & secure any internship opportunity offered.

Almost everywhere in Singapore has at least decent food, though good food can only be found in certain places. Last I checked, Lau Pa Sa was pretty famous for that... I rarly eat out, however. Home-cooked is still the best. XD

At that time when Japanese manga culture was not so popular, it was great to read up more about it. Ok, so to answer your questions: When I was in Japan last May/June, I stayed in Sunroute Hotel in Shinjuku. Totally sugoi place!! My first full time job was at 16 (I'm 24 now) at a Video store. I was the night manager and one of the 2 guys that worked there. The boss would hire only girls, and pretty ones, cause he said he had more clients this way and that he trusted only the other guy and me. Kinda nice job if you ask me. I miss Japan... It was on Yoyogi dori. Right next to Shinjuku station. I had a great time there!! Awesome service and people there. I met a lot of good people and became friends with some of them. Great internet access in each room and if you don't have a laptop there's 2 PCs that you can use in a very peaceful and comfy guest lobby. I went there alone and gotta say that it was amazing. I probably go back next spring for the Sakura festival and might book some nights at that hotel. I have to show it to my friends. I really enjoyed my stay in Tokyo and it has a lot to do with where I stayed. Enjoy your trip!! NIPPON BANZAI!!

My first full time job was when I was 18 I think. Been working full time off and on while going to college. Got my associates but had no idea where to go from there. Joined the Navy to give me some time to think. As for Mc Flurries and Evangelion. I love both of them. Evangelion was actually the first anime I ever watched. And it is still one of my favorite animes to date. For hotels, I have yet to get one except for the New Yokosuka hotel right off base. Not the best hotel and pricy btw. Speaking no Japanese, I get very intimidated to think of trying to stay in one. Even when I went all the way to Shirakawago and Takayama from Yokosuka, I still did not get a hotel. Barely made it back on the last train. Maybe I'll find some good English accomidating hotels in Kyoto and Tokyo (know about the military only one but its always booked up).

prior to my current stint in Tokyo, I had stayed at Keio Plaza in Shinjuku back in 2002 and Ginza Dai-Ichi Hotel last March.. I'm currently on assignment from work for 1-2 years.. I just happen to be living in Shinagawa actually hehe, opposite side to where Danny took his pictures though.. when i visit japan, i'll stay at an inn; New Andon in Ueno http://www.andon.co.jp/, Tokyo. I like the place, its not too far from the station and within the residential area, which is quite cool, plus its a nicely designed place. As for idols, will Yukie kawamura be therE? hahaha if yes , photos pls danny! thx. and theres lotsa stuff to eat in Singapore, coz its kinda like our national pasttime. In Ikebukuro, I stayed at the Toyoko Inn Ikebukuro Kita-guchi No.1. I had no problems with the hotel, but it seemed forever to wash my clothes or I was just a damn n00b. The only quirk I found was that once a key was removed from a slot by the door, all electrical devices were shut off and the power went bye-bye.

Stayed in Ginza and Shibuya. Since our Shibuya hotel was right on top of the shopping centre, it was always a burst of adrenaline in the morning, whereas our Ginza hotel was in the 'back-streets' so you had to walk to get into the main district. My animation course ends in June, so i'm debating about whether to go to uni to study 2d arts design, or just get a basic job doing freelance or working in Tesco or something >_>

I think that there are to many factors for decide a place to stay in tokyo. When I went to tokyo, I want to have fun clubing around the city, thats why i decided to stay in a ryokan at 10/15 minuts walking from JR shibuya station. I usually stay at Korean hostel places in Shin Okubo area. Their price is pretty decent, 3000 yen per night but room is domitori style so you end of staying with 1-3 people in same room. There's single room available at higher rate, like 4000 yen. I prefer Okubo area since it's in middle hub to Shinjuku, Nakano, Shibuya and Ikebukuro. It's little far from Akihabara than the above four areas but still is manageable ^^;

Awww the Haruhi girls(would say SOS girls but thats not correct since Emiri and Tsuruya-san arn't really part of the SOS Dan are they?)look great altogether!! (I don't mind that Ryouko is missing lol) The Oreo Mcflurrys were GORGEOUS! Right now we have Kit Kat ones in UK McD's. When I was working there I got to make my own flurry for my break, so I got add extra oreo cookie bits and vanilla or caramel sauce. (The caramel oreo varient came to McD's a few months after the original did. Job wise.... Probably look for one after Uni. Might find a job to earn some quick cash, then spend a really long holiday in Japan. That would be awesome. Ideally I'd like to go to Cananda someday to work at a games or animation company, since there are quite a few there, correct?

AHHH... Shinagawa station, that brings back memories. I stayed at the Prince hotel right across that station when I visited Japan. There were some ramen shops located nearby... perhaps under the elevated train tracks. That was the first time I've ever seen and used those ticket machines for meals. I was staying in Shinagawa last week - the Shinagawa Prince Hotel is pretty good, and very reasonably priced. It's also really close to the station which is ideally situated for the important bits of Tokyo (Akihabara and Shinjuku are both about 20 mins away, and the Shinkansens stop there). There's not much night life in Shinagawa though, but at least that means it's fairly quiet for sleeping (well apart from the Jumbos taking off from Haneda and the odd megaphone powered politician).

I'm not working full time yet, just part time.. Though full time would help with the free time I have at the moment. Not to mention with school.... Wah all that food looked so good! I will have to try so many foods when I visit Japan in May! I've never been there, but I can't wait! It'd be awesome to meet you though, Lol.

A McFlurry really does look like bird poop, but it is yummy! I have seen some Eva, but I don't find it as appealing as my friends make it out to be. So Danny, you aren't the only one who isn't into the Eva thing. I'm sure the prepaid tickets menu for food will confuse the heck out of me when I get there. Started working (full time) in 1988 @ 17yo on a "softhouse", actually it was just pir8 games for MSX computers. Making copies (a LOT of them) was a hell (in bad way) of job. Worst thing was those K7 tapes orders, including over 100 games (someone ordered) all in K7 tapes!

When I went to Tokyo, I stayed at Asuka Hostel in Chitose-Karasuyama. It is an old apartment building, with bunk beds inside each apartment. It was really nice (my friend and I were the only ones in our room) and we had our own unit bathroom. Next time I come, I'm staying there for my whole stay. It is a good location, and the area is soo nice. Loved the Doutor Coffee, 7-11, countless conbinis, and closeness to Shinjuku. I will look for a full time job after I graduate, which will be when I am 21 (or just after my 22 birthday).

When I was stopped by in Tokyo, I stayed 6 nights in Akihabara, 5 in the manga cafe across the street from the memorial for the stabbing victims, and 1 in the "Internet cafe" manga cafe a little down the street), and 1 night in Shibuya (gran cyber manga cafe, just a few yards from Hachiko crossing). Both have 6 hour night packs for around 980 yen, and combined with a couple hours of nojuku you can get by for pretty cheap in Tokyo without having to resort to the cheap hostels in the slums of Taito.

<3 Mcflurries - I miss the caramel oreo mcflurry they had here a few months ago! Also, last time I was at the Shibuya starbucks I noticed the staff got pretty prickly about people taking photos inside/from their shop. Maybe they're tired of people just coming in to snag a pic of the crossing.. great pics as always ^_^

orea mcflurrries = epic win, I think a majority like oreo mcflurries over other flavours, but I enjoyed the coffee flavoured one in Hong Kong too :D I want a part time job, I kinda of do have one but I'm constantly surrounded by 3-7 year olds in that job as I have to teach them. I guess it teachers me patience xD

Since I spent 2 years at uni (didn't work out), and then 3 years in higher education outside uni, and immediately got a full time job, I started at the age of 22 (because I have my birthday in November, I wasn't 23 yet in 2004 ;p). I usually stay at a hostel in Ueno (Oak Hotel, cheap and good accommodation), and also very convenient access to Akihabara, through Ueno Station in 3-5 minutes using the Yamanote of Keihin-Tohoku line. (It's a 10 minute walk to Ueno Station though ;p) Hmm, I want to put a figure on my desk at work. Still thinking of what to get, preferably a nendoroid puchi, something not too big.

i started to look for a full time job at the age of 16 (right after high school graduation ^^) ur probably saying "WUT??" lol! well that's cuz at that time i started to get into the figures addiction and since my parents wouldn't give me any money to buy figures at the AX (they would give me the THAT-PIECE-OF-PLASTIC-IS-SOOOO-EXPENSIVE-HELL-NO-I'M-NOT-BUYING-IT crap) T_T i said to myself "WATTA HELL! I'LL GET A JOB!!" hehe so yeah the figure addiction pushed me to get a job but, since i'm going back to Peru & over there they don't have any AX or any other kind of anime convention i'll just go back to school ^^

one night after a big night out, we went to our local maccas and i can't remember what drove made us order a cheeseburger mcflurry. the counter staff just took our order calmly and without blinking, went to take a cheeseburger, stuffed it into the cup with icecream and put the whole thing in the blender thingy. it was a really... weird taste.

I got my first full-time job at age 23, and it paid crap even if it was interesting (I was an all-around writer, producer, and director for an AM news and public affairs radio station). I didn't get a break until I was 27 and I've been in corporate ever since (I'm 31). NOT AS PLANNED.

I'm 20 and left college last year in the hope of getting a job. Started avidly looking beginning of March (Whilst I was still 19) but had no luck getting one since then. Kind of thought that maybe me still being a teen was putting them off. But 6 rejection letters in the past 11 days kind of tells my story and refutes my 'because I was a teen thoery' (Admittedly 2 of those rejections were for the same job, they didn't want me so much that they had to tell me twice, 1 via email and 1 through the post xD ). If I don't get something soon, I'm seriously thinking that I might retrain as my ICT qualifications aren't getting me anything (3 years of college it took me to get them). Oh well I'm not going to get down about it, Life is too short to waste moping about :)

I'm going to be 23 in the end of the year, still in college, finishing up my second bachelor degree in accounting, got a BA in Economics earlier this year. Aiming to pass the CPA exam next year. So probably looking for a full time job in the middle of next year. How is the accounting industry in Japan like? I'd like to live in Japan but I have no clue whether an US educated CPA can be useful in Japan.

Wibbling+Writing+Teaching
I also save the best for last...unless someone is eyeing my food. ... My job is not a full time job, but it still counts as a "real" job for me. Basically, I have finished my studies and spend half my time teaching music theory and/or piano and the other half working on personal projects (writing, composing). It hasn't been easy asserting myself as a teacher since I'm only 20 (started giving lessons at 15 and filling in for other teachers at 18-ish), but things are looking much better this year. :)

i had to look for a job as soon as i graduated from college. i've never ahd a full-time job though. i've always been freelance. it was hard in the beginning. i just worked hard, establish myself, made connections and created networks. things are a little better now... thriving... not earning gazillions... i guess enough to get by and splurge a little every now and then. Fledgling repowriter
Shinagawa is where F.I.F.A. blocks a bunch of hotel rooms for journalists covering the Club World Cup. The 'official' reason is because one can board the Shinkansen at Shinagawa station. The room rate last year was ¥7,800 | night. (The FIFA hotshots themselves generally stay at the Westin in Ebisu.) But that was too pricey for me. In 2005, I was at the Juyoh Hotel in Taito-Ku. But it had a 0100 curfew, and there were two evenings when I somehow missed either the last train, or fell asleep on the Hibiya Line and didn't wake up in time for my exit [No one molested me! ;=)], and I had to rely on some other guests to let me in after curfew. So the next year I wound up at the Khaosan Group's 'Annex' hostel in Sumida-Ku, just across the river from Asakusa. Then I went to its 'Smile' hostel, because that was where its bar was. Unfortunately, it is now closed for renovation. I think this December, I might stay at a correspondent's home office in Shibuya-Ku. [I would have to vacate the premises between 0900 and 1700 hours on weekdays.]

After reading all your A Week in Tokyo I so want to go to Japan now. They have such good fast food places and restaurents and gadgets etc wonder what those burgers taste like and how fun pachinko is. I saw on BBC a report talking about Japan about the enviroment and how some houses/buildings are built to withstand the earthquakes and the volcanoes. Pachinko was built/invented to fill cramp spaces etc due to the enviroment.
